Buffalo Chip collaborates with SB High School & top Builders The recent Rally and Legends ride was an opportunity for some local high school students to show off months of work. The results were impressive. The Sturgis Buffalo Chip®’s collabora on with Sturgis Brown High School and others in the industry resulted in a custom 2014 Harley‐Davidson® Street Glide. The Chip’s Student Build Challenge connects students with the industry’s top professionals in order to complete customiza ons. The finished bike features a fully overhauled and customized motor for increased per‐ formance, a low‐ ered stretched body and an eye‐catching graffi ‐themed paint job. It is also one of the first cus‐ tom 2014 Street Glides in existence. “The motorcycle these students created has absolutely blown away my expecta ons for this year’s bike build project,” says Rod Woodruff, President of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “Moreover, these young students created a machine that wowed the industry’s top
builders at the Donnie Smith Show. That’s something the students, the school, the community and all those involved in the Student Build Challenge should be very, very proud of.” 2014 marked the first year the Student Build worked on a new‐ year motorcycle sponsored by Black Hills Harley‐Davidson, and the students found customizing a
longer, lower‐si ng motorcycle. They replaced the 19‐inch front wheel with a 26‐inch from R.C. Components and swapped the standard black seat for a buff leather seat made by Howard Knight. Finally, the students took the bike to Ian Strachan Designs to give it a striking Ferrari‐red graffi paint job. Students worked closely with in‐ dustry veterans, Keith Terry of Ter‐ ry Components and Randy and Nick Cramer of Dakota V‐Twin, along with high school instructors, Chad Hedderman and Bill Johnson, to learn the state‐ of‐the‐art tech‐ niques needed to customize their 2014 Street Glide. SEDC Update Business Expansion
Landsport is expanding to the Sturgis In‐ dustrial Park with construc‐ on of an 11,500 sq. . Pat Kurtenbach, manufacturing President SEDC facility on a 2‐ acre parcel. Landsport has been supplying dura‐ ble aluminum loading ramps for the trucking industry since 1987, and has been located at 1035 Lazelle Street in Sturgis for the past five years. Construc on started in August. The expansion will allow Landsport to consolidate their opera on from three buildings into one and nearly double their manufacturing foot‐ print. This expansion will accommo‐ date con nued future growth pro‐ jec ons with the ability to hire addi‐ onal personnel. Landsport currently employs 13. The SD Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) is par cipa ng in Landsport’s growth by coordi‐ na ng OSHA consulta ons, as well as, equipment layout and work flow to assist Landsport in realizing new manufacturing efficiencies. Land‐ sport General Manager Randy Tin‐ nell states, “The new building and proper equipment layout, including the addi on of a bridge crane, will greatly increase the safety and produc vity of our employees. We are thankful to everyone who assist‐ ed us in taking this major step for‐ ward.” Landsport’s need to expand is a tes‐ tament to their quality workman‐ ship, innova ve designs, and prod‐
uct support. SEDC is proud to assist in their expansion efforts as they relocate and grow in the Sturgis In‐ dustrial Park.
48‐Unit Housing Development Planned for Sturgis
Plans are underway to construct a 48‐unit rental housing development on a 3‐acre parcel located at the corner of Ballpark Road and East Drive in Sturgis. Dane Goetz, general manager for Baron Proper es, Inc. will develop Sierra Vista Sturgis in three phases, with the first 16‐unit complex ready for occupancy in 2015. Each 2‐story complex will feature 1, 2, and 3 bedroom units ranging from 800 sq. . to 1,050 sq. . Floor plans offer an open floor concept all on one level. These market‐rate rental units will be furnished with all major appliances, including air condi on‐ ing, dishwasher, garbage disposal, electric range, microwave hood, side by side refrigerator with water & ice dispenser, and full size washer and dryer. Each unit will offer an outdoor living space with either a back pa o or deck, and plenty of green space. The first floor will be pet friendly.

SEDC had re‐ cently acquired the parcel from Her‐ itage Acres, Inc. For the past 18 months, SEDC has been working with the City, landowners, and po‐ ten al contractors to develop new, affordable living op ons for our workforce. A recent housing study commissioned by the City and SEDC outlined the severe housing short‐ age in Sturgis. This mul ‐family development promises to be a great start to pro‐ vide addi onal housing op ons. Industrial Park Buildings Available Two 9,600 sq. . buildings are availa‐ ble for occupancy in the Sturgis Indus‐ trial Park. Built to accommodate in‐ dustrial manufacturing capabili es, each building is equipped with 3‐ phase power, reinforced concrete floors, and a truck door. Located at 3501 and 3551 Mayer Avenue, the buildings were built between 1999 and 2001. The Sturgis Industrial Park is a South Dakota Cer fied Site Ready Park. The building at 3501 Mayer Avenue is de‐ signed as a duplex unit, with each unit capable of being leased separately. Each unit has approximately 4,700 sq. . with separate u li es. A floor‐to‐
ceiling wall divides the units and in‐ cludes an overhead door. The west unit has a truck door; the east unit could have one added. This building has minimal office space. It has 3‐ phase, 208 volt power served by Black Hills Power. The building sits on 1.2 acres and can be expanded to the east and north. The building at 3551 Mayer Avenue is a free span structure. Scott Peterson Motors Begins Construction at Exit 32 Site Construc on has started at Sco Peterson Motor’s proper‐ ty, Vanocker Junc on, near Exit 32 and the mouth of Vanocker Canyon in Sturgis. The announcement was made in March and includes 22 acres of development property. It will be home to a state‐of‐the‐ art dealership store and
planned development retail space that will also include open green areas, a dog park, and a disc golf course. The dealership will house a 22,000 square foot showroom, a 16 bay service department, and quick lube for service cus‐ tomers.

City of Sturgis purchases Downtown 2nd Street Plaza The effort to create a Plaza on the cor‐ ner of 2nd and Main Street of Sturgis has stretched over several years. The collabora on between the City of Stur‐ gis, several non‐profits, and private community members and businesses owners just took a major step forward. Early in August, the City Council voted to purchase the lot immediately across Main Street from First Inter‐ state Bank. Construc on will begin in the Spring of 2015. When complet‐ ed, the lot and adjoining 2nd Street will be a beau ful out‐ door venue for both planned events, as well as, informal gatherings. 2nd Street will re‐ main open for traffic with the excep on of events. “The design pulls from local architecture, history, and unique culture of ‘riders’ that is singularly Sturgis,” explains Eirik Heikes, Department Man‐ ager, Land‐ scape Architec‐ ture & Plan‐ ning at Four Front Design. Upon its com‐ ple on, the Plaza will be an ideal space for both live en‐ tertainment
