Paving the Way Wayne henning ’63 has volunteered his time over the course of two decades to help the state of Indiana create a new interstate, I-69, which will eventually run from Canada to Texas. Although it has been a long and winding road, Henning is confident that he will see the project come to fruition in the next decade. Henning, too, has built a lasting connection between his hometown of Evansville, Indiana, and the state of Texas through St. Edward’s University. While at St. Edward’s, Henning spent his freshman year on the baseball team, but he developed a greater love of business and earned a degree in Business Administration. Some of his most vivid memories are from his senior year as part of the Commerce Forum, a club that traveled around Texas to large companies to tour their facilities and hear from industry leaders. “It was a tremendous learning experience, and it was so meaningful,” Henning recalls. Reserves before joining the unit in Evansville, where he also began his first job with Old National Bank. During his 42-year career with the bank, he earned a graduate degree from Rutgers University and achieved the titles of executive vice president and chief operating officer. He also was instrumental in changing banking regulations in the state of Indiana. He and several dozen others worked to get laws passed to allow multibank holding companies and to allow banks to expand beyond county lines. Henning, who was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from St. Edward’s three years ago, credits his strong work ethic and his business successes to his St. Edward’s education. He knows that, like the work on the interstate, great accomplishments are achieved slowly and perhaps with a few bumps along the way. Now, he and his wife, Jewell, hope that their gifts to the university pave the way for future student successes.
