About CAMP

The College Assistance Migrant Program at St. Edward’s University helps first-year students from migrant and seasonal farmworker families develop the skills they need to succeed in college.

Since its founding in 1972, the St. Edward’s CAMP has given more than 2,800 students a solid academic foundation and helped them achieve their educational and career goals.

Our program is selective — only 35 vacancies a year — and our approach is personal. During your first year at St. Edward’s, you’ll study in a highly supportive environment that includes academic and personal counseling, tutoring, and a full range of support services. CAMP Enrichment Week gives you a chance, before classes begin, to get to know fellow students, faculty and staff, and former CAMP students continuing their education at St. Edward’s. We also invite parents and families to attend a one-day orientation.

Our CAMP students are an important part of the St. Edward’s community, and many of our professors specifically ask for CAMP students in their classes. At St. Edward’s, you’ll have the opportunity to participate fully in campus activities, including internships, study abroad, student organization membership, undergraduate research, campus leadership opportunities, campus ministry and more. Our CAMP staff maintains an open-door policy, with opportunities for open conversation, support and counseling.

CREATING THEIR FUTURE, SUCCESSFULLY.

We believe the CAMP story is best told by those who have experienced it firsthand. Here’s what they say.

BIANCA

ESQUIVEL ’19

Psychology and English Writing

Mission, Texas

“I came to St. Edward’s planning to major in English and become a journalist, but I started taking psychology classes and eventually added it as a second major. My psychology professor also suggested I try a social work class, which confirmed that I like learning about how government policies affect individual people. I decided to pursue a master’s in Social Work, so I can counsel Latinx youth and advocate for better mental health resources. My English Writing degree is going to be useful no matter what I do. If you want to change policies, you have to be able to communicate in a way that’s persuasive and relatable.”

ALEJANDRO TORRES ’20 Biology

San Benito, Texas

“I’ve wanted to be a dentist since I was 15 years old. During one summer, I went to South India and assisted in oral and maxillofacial surgery as a Johnson-Turpin Scholar through CAMP. It was my first time on a plane and traveling outside of the United States. I worked as a dental assistant in Austin but helping patients through their oral surgeries was a big opportunity for me that isn’t available here. The experience of shadowing doctors made my passion for dentistry stronger and made me humble so that I appreciate what I have at home. I want to spend my summers going to other countries to help more people, and once I am a dentist, I plan to travel back to India again and volunteer.”

Alejandro is now attending the UT Health San Antonio School of Dentistry.

COLLEGE ASSISTANCE MIGRANT PROGRAM

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

TO QUALIFY FOR CAMP, YOU MUST:

• Meet the admission requirements of St. Edward’s

• Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident

• Demonstrate that migrant or seasonal farmwork is your family’s primary source of income

You must have a Certificate of Eligibility on file with your high school, or you, your parents or guardians must have engaged in migrant or seasonal farmwork for at least 75 days in the last 24 months before you apply.

DEFINITIONS FOR MIGRANT AND SEASONAL FARMWORK:

Migrant farmwork: Migrant farmworkers migrate from their hometown to other states or towns within the state for farmwork-related employment. Examples of farmwork include soil preparation, planting, harvesting fruits and vegetables, and plowing. Some ranch work, such as feeding livestock and shearing sheep, and some fishing activity also may be used for eligibility purposes.

Seasonal farmwork: Seasonal farmworkers perform the same type of work as described under migrant work but on a temporary basis.

If you have participated in a Chapter 1 Migrant Education Program of Workforce Investment Act, please contact the Office of Admission at 512-448-8500 or 800-555-0614.

IT’S EASY TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID

For CAMP students, financial aid covers the cost of tuition, fees, books, living expenses, transportation and health insurance. To apply:

1. Submit an application for CAMP admission.

2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Our financial aid package for CAMP students includes federal, state and institutional grants and scholarships. The package typically covers all but $3,500 of first-year expenses. To cover the final $3,500, students may:

• Accept a student loan from the university.

• Use outside scholarships. Outside scholarships larger than $3,500 may be applied to the cost of attendance.

• Break cost down across monthly payments during the academic year.

Students must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually and be Pell eligible. Awards can vary if a significant change occurs on the FAFSA application. Repayment of student loans typically begins after you have graduated or six months after you stop attending school. Repayment terms on most loans allow students to pay off their debts over 10 years.

WE’RE COMMITTED TO HELP YOU GRADUATE

The basic mission of CAMP is to help students complete the first two semesters of college, but at St. Edward’s, we go further.

We guarantee three additional years of institutional grants for students making satisfactory progress toward a degree.

• Earn a 2.5 GPA or higher: We’ll pay tuition

Note: Students must complete the FAFSA every year to qualify for continued institutional support.

We want you to succeed. We’ll help you find and apply for scholarships from companies, foundations and other sources to offset the cost of your education.

HOW TO APPLY

We select students based on their completed applications, academic records, high school counselor recommendations, extracurricular activities and personal essays. Our goal is to learn more about you — so please share any information that will help us make a decision.
