City of Rio Grande City Presents the 2023 Miss RGC Freedom Fest Queens!

Congratulations to the Roma Middle School and Ramiro Barrera Middle School Swimming and Diving Teams! They had an outstanding, dedicated and hardworking season, showcasing themselves at the Middle School District Meet at Mission ISD by both the Girls and Boys Teams coming in 1st and earning the District Title! Coach Clemente Martinez and Coach Marissa Estrada are beyond proud of the commitment and drive these young athletes bring to the athletic program! The Gladiator Nation is super proud!

RGC Freedom Fest will be Saturday, July 1st, at the Basilio Villarreal Municipal Park, FREE ADMISSION! ere will be a so ball tournament, cook-o , car show, musical guests, reworks, and SO MUCH MORE!!

Middle School Students Performed “James & the Giant Peach”

Veterans Middle School students brings Theatre to RGC with their production of James & the Giant Peach. The talented VMS students performed “James & the Giant Peach” by Richard R. George under the direction of Mr. Christian Olivarez. The audience was transported to a land of magic as James escapes an abusive home on a magical peach while making special friends along the way. On behalf of the VMS Administration we would like to thank Mr. Christian Olivarez, parents and students for enlightening us with this marvelous performance. We cannot wait to see what our Mighty VMS Thespians have in store for us in the upcoming 2023-2024 school year.

ACE Staff and Director Attended the OSTI-CON Conference

conference (OSTI-CON) hosted by Westat & TEA. Miss Leslie Saenz, Family Engagement Specialist, and

Career Exploration teacher, Miss Sabrina Hernandez, presented on empowering the community through art

The presentation was a grand success led by these young ladies and the ACE RGCGISD staff.

The RGCGISD Administrative team was presented with the Strategic Leadership Award among the 38 districts that encompass the Region One Service Center. They were presented with the award at the Region One Summer Leadership Academy. Thanks to Central Office staff under the leadership of Mr. Adolfo Pena, Superintendent, for the sensational work all do to ensure the staff has the leadership they need to continue educating and preparing their students for the future.

Congratulations to Pedro and Melissa Martinez, husband and wife, that graduated with their Masters degrees this May from UTRGV. The RGCGISD CTE department is very proud of Mr. Martinez, CTE strategist as he advances in his career goals. They are pictured with their children Amador and Audrey.

DHR Health and STC Starr County Campus Collaborate to Bring

Life-Changing Health Event, Empowering Starr County Residents

DHR Health and South Texas College Starr County Campus are joining forces to host a Cancer Detection and Early Prevention Lecture and Screening event for all Starr County residents. This event, free and open to the public, will take place on June 14, 2023, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., at the STC Starr County Campus, Vocational Nursing Program, Building HEvent Center, located at 142 FM 3167 in Rio Grande City.

“This event reflects the commitment we have to the health and well-being of the various communities we serve,” said Anabel ArellanoRodriguez, Director of Business Development, DHR Health Advanced Care Center. “At DHR Health, we aim to improve access to high-quality healthcare and equip residents with the resources needed to prioritize their health, in their community.”

DHR Health currently has several physician providers in Starr County who offer medical care in several specialty areas, including cardiology, diabetes management, gastroenterology, general surgery, and urology. With this event, DHR Health proudly introduces Dr. Shravan

K. Narmala, who provides Oncology and Hematology services to residents in Starr County.

Dr. Narmala is a board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology. He obtained his medical degree from Osmania Medical College of India and further pursued a Master of Public Health from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He completed his residency in internal medicine/pediatrics and a fellowship in hematology oncology at Louisiana State University Health Science Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. Event attendees will have the opportunity to meet Dr. Narmala in person, who will deliver an engaging presentation on cancer awareness, empowering participants with vital knowledge for early detection and prevention.

In addition to the educational component, there will be free health screenings available during the event which will include a Fibro Scan, which is a specialized ultrasound technology that measures changes in a person’s liver. A CBC (complete blood count) test

will also be offered and assesses overall health and detects a wide range of conditions, including anemia, infection, and leukemia.

Roma High School’s Patient Care Technician Program students learned several skills to help them prepare for a rewarding field in healthcare.

One of the skills they must learn for their certification exam is how to shave patients. Great job Gladiators!

The RGCGISD Athletic Department held several TEP sessions on June 2-3 that covered the Principles of CPR/ First Aid/ AED and also certified those participants by the American Health & Safety Institute. Those in attendance worked with infant, child, and adult hands on scenarios which included the coaching staff who coach UIL sanctioned sports at GMS, RMS, VMS, RHS and GHS. UIL mandates certification or recertification for every athletic coach every two years. RGCGISD thank Regina Dorfmeister for an excellent presentation preparing the staff for emergency scenarios to assist student athletes during the athletic seasons in 2023-2024.
