Few things are as miserable –or as expensive – as a broken air conditioning system that could have been prevented by regular maintenance. Springtime is the perfect time to hire a licensed air conditioning contractor to assess any mechanical issues in your system. Regular maintenance of your system will extend its life and help you avoid expensive health and safety issues.

But before hiring an air conditioning contractor, consumers should check the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) website (www.tdlr.texas.gov) to make sure the contractor is licensed.

“Hiring a licensed air conditioning contractor helps ensure the safety of your family and property. Checking whether your technician is licensed is

an important step in protecting yourself from shoddy and dangerous work,” said TDLR Chief Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Inspector Bill Weatherly.

Once you’ve confirmed that the contractor is licensed through TDLR, here are several things they should be inspecting in your cooling system. At a minimum the contractor should:

•Check equipment cabinets for damage or missing panels.

•Check and tighten compressor, fan motor, contactor and control panel terminations.

•Check compressor crankcase heater (if applicable) for proper operation.

•Lubricate condenser fan motor and indoor blower motor bearings (if applicable).

•Check alignment, tension and condition of indoor blower belt(s)

(if applicable).

•Check and clean condenser coils.

•Check and clean evaporator coil, condensate drain pan, and condensate line for free flow. Add biocide pan tabs to condensate pan.

•Check air filters and replace as necessary.

Start Indoor Blower and perform static pressure test to ensure proper air flow.

•Start cooling cycle and check for refrigerant leaks.

•Check system for proper refrigerant charge, trim charge as necessary.

•Make operating log of all temperatures, pressures, voltages, and amperages.

•Submit a written report to the customer and report any uncorrected deficiencies.

Medina EC’s Operation Round Up Helps Food Banks

Spare change adds up, and in March it made a real difference.

Medina Electric’s Operation Round Up program awarded two food banks a total of $7,000 in response to an increase in ORU applications asking for help purchasing food and other basic necessities.

Medina EC’s ORU committee awarded the South Texas Food Bank in Laredo with $3,000 to provide assistance and food to food pantries in Dimmit, Jim Hogg, Kinney, Starr, Webb and Zapata counties.

In addition to food, the South Texas Food Bank helps with completing paperwork for government assistance programs

including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP, WIC, and others. They also offer programs to help children and senior citizens receive the food and nutrition they need. Learn more about the South Texas Food Bank and their offered programs at SouthTexasFoodBank.org.

The ORU committee also voted to donate $4,000 to the San Antonio Food Bank, who helps feed eight of Medina EC’s 17 counties— Atascosa, Edwards, Frio, LaSalle, Medina, Real, Uvalde and Zavala counties.

Medina EC, your local electric cooperative, offers the Operation Round Up program for members

of the cooperative to round up their monthly electric bills to the next whole dollar. That extra change then goes into a fund managed by the Operation Round Up Trust Committee and is awarded quarterly to individuals and organizations in need across our 17-county service territory. Applicants do not need to be members of Medina EC but must reside in one of the 17 counties served by the cooperative. Applicants must include a letter of why the donation is needed. The next application deadline is August 2. For more information and to apply online, visit MedinaEC.org/ ORU.
