THE EFFECTS OF FAST FOOD ON CHILDREN

It is no surprise that fast food is detrimental to the human body, but just how badly does it effect children? Excessive weight gain is just one of the many bad effects fast food has on children. In a study published in “Pediatrics” in January 2004, researchers analyzed the dietary quality and fast food intake of 6,212 children and adolescents in the United States. Data compiled over a two-year period showed that children who ate fast food most often consumed more total calories, fat and sugar-rich beverages, less fiber and fewer fruits and vegetables

compared to children who ate fast food less often. This high-calorie, high-fat, low-nutrient eating pattern is associated with undesirable weight gain, obesity and obesity-related health risks, such as asthma, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Constipation is a common symptom of a diet with insufficient nutrients. According to the “Pediatrics” study, frequent fast food dining leads to an overall low-fiber diet. The less fiber children consume, the more likely they are to develop constipation -- infrequent or difficult-to-pass bowel movements. Consti-

pation is a concern for children, says Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, because hard stools can tear or irritate the lining of the anus and cause abdominal pain and discomfort. An inactive lifestyle increases these risks. To achieve positive brain function, eating foods rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats, such as cold-water fish and nuts, lead to positive energy and moods. A dietary pattern rich in fast food tends to lack these attributes, increasing children’s risk for depressive moods. When fast food-rich diets lead SPRING 19

to obesity, children’s chance for depression, low self-esteem, anxiety and a sense of hopelessness are increased. Obese children are also more likely to be bullied, according to MayoClinic.com. Establishing an overall healthy, balanced diet and active lifestyle for your whole family can help lower these risks. Positive brain function evidently leads to good academic performance. Without the correct nutrients to feed the body and mind, the child’s academic performance may lessen. In a study published in “Child: Care, Health and Development” in

November 2011, researchers analyzed the fast-food consumption and test scores in math and reading of 12,000 fifth-graders. They found that children who ate fast food four to six times within a given week tested significantly lower in math and reading compared to children who did not. To avoid these risks, encourage your child to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein-rich foods and healthy fats -- a dietary pattern linked with positive brain function.

WHY P LUS-S IZED FAS HION IS Vital I N TH E INDUSTRY TODAY by Rachel Evan

The misconception afloat today is that plus sized modeling justifies being overweight, and those thin models are the people who put in the effort to look good and deserve modeling blah blah. Now let’s dispel some of these misconceptions and elucidate why plus sized modeling is actually progressive for the society.

REMOVING THE STIGMA This fashion comes in at a crucial time when the world is being engulfed by unrealistic standards of beauty. Yes, there are still criticisms that run about how plus size models aren’t actually plus-sized, and that more plus sized models should be involved in high fashion and Runway modeling. It is true that there is still much room for progress and there is definitely a need to accept all kinds of models.

PLUS-SIZE IS NOT EXTRA LARGE SIZE, ITS AVERAGE SIZED When we use the word ‘plus -sized’ it is in reference to the modeling world. As you may probably know the regular industry standard models have very particular strict height and weight requirements to meet in order to qualify most types of modeling. However, these models are not necessarily ‘healthy’ (Being underweight and malnutrition can be as adverse as being overweight) and it doesn’t mean that everyone is physically able to meet these criterions.

We as a society are evolving and change will come, albeit slowly. We are currently seeing the revival of the curvy fashion of the 1950s which produced Marilyn Monroe. So sit tight because we as a society are heading towards expansion of not size alone, but fashion. “To all the girls who think you are fat because you’re not a size zero, you’re the beautiful one, its society who’s ugly.” -Marilyn Monroe THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN RELATION AND PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS FOR AN ASPIRING MODEL. We all have encountered at least once a good public speaker and a person who is excellent at communicating with us. You also may have heard that this is good for adults in their businesses, but how about models? Most of the time models won’t speak and pose as they are told to, but public speaking skills and human relations actually have a very crucial role to play for model’s success.

Plus sized models are in fact models that represent the average bodily figure in the society. By doing so they are able to relate to the larger audience better than industry standard models. They also stand testament to the fact that Modeling isn’t just about looks, but rather it’s also about how you are able to exude confidence, and to what level you are able to pose and portray the intended emotions and message. Brands and Commercial marketers are starting to understand the importance of plus-sized models.Because of how well plus sized models are starting to represent the general population commercial advertising and marketing has started to value this area of fashion. Major brands such as Ralph Lauren, Nike and Levis are just some of the top brands to incorporate plus-sized models into their brand and product management strategies.

HOW TO FIND “ME TIME” ON THE BUSIEST DAYS by Carol Tuttle

Admit it. You’ve fallen into bed at night with that feeling… You hurried all day, shuttled the kids, ran the errands, worked hard. You got things DONE. But in the rush of the day, YOU got a little lost in there somewhere. If only you could have a few uninterrupted minutes to take care of yourself without everything falling apart. Lying there at night, you think about the next day and realize you don’t have time for yourself tomorrow either. You’re exhausted just thinking about it. So, how do you carve out a little “me time” when there’s so much to do? HINT: “ME TIME” IS NOT ACTUALLY ABOUT TIME Truth is, every mom would love a whole day to herself—but we can get reenergized on a lot less. Feeling taken care of is less about the time you spend doing it and more about what you do. Have a plan. Identify exactly which kind of activity will recharge you.And when those extra 10 minutes show up, do it! How to Customize Your “Me Time” For Maximum Benefit In my 20 years of work in the

field of self-help, I’ve found 4 different Type of moms. They’re energized by 4 different types of activities.

with your emotions. Take a few quiet minutes alone to think, write, read or talk about your feelings. The three minutes you take to be quiet will make you infinitely more effective the rest of the day.

When you identify which Type of mom you are, you get the key to reenergizing yourself in half the time. LIGHT, UPWARD TYPE 1 MOM: These women express a random, effervescent energy that moves randomly through life. They prioritize their children having fun and are drawn to activities that allow them to connect socially. Type 1’s best “me” time: Give yourself something to look forward to. It can be a fun event at the end of the week, or even just a phone call to a friend later in the day. Of all the moms, you love surprises the most, so be open to them. FLUID, FLOWING TYPE 2 MOM: These mothers express a gentle, subdued energy that moves steadily through life. They prioritize their children feeling comfortable and are drawn to activities that allow them to quietly unwind. Type 2’s best “me” time: Connect SPRING 19

13

SWIFT, DETERMINED TYPE 3 MOM: These mothers express a dynamic energy that moves forward swiftly. They prioritize engaging their children in activity and are drawn to physical outlets for their energy. Type 3’s best “me” time: Go outside! Even if it’s just a quick lap around the house or the office, you connect to the world physically and you need to recharge by moving your body. You and your children will be happier if you do. STILL, CONSTANT TYPE 4 MOM: These mothers express a bold energy that has a reflective quality to it. They prioritize their children’s progress in terms of routines and structures and are drawn to activities that allow them to focus. Type 4’s best “me” time: Do something with laser-like focus. You feel centered when you can zero in on what you want and SPRINKLES

complete it to perfection. Choose something small you want to do with zero interruptions and plan it into your day. THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TO “ME” TIME As mothers, we often buy into limiting beliefs that “me time” is tough to come by, or that we need to sacrifice in order to be good mothers. It’s just not true. The most important step you can take to having time for yourself is believing that you can. Next time you’re lying in bed, wondering how you’ll squeeze yourself into the upcoming day, make a choice. Choose to make yourself a priority. Choose to reenergize. Don’t get lost in all you have to do. Find the woman you are and take care of her. Everything else you do will be better because you did. Carol Tuttle is the CEO of Live Your Truth, LLC and author of the best-selling parenting book, The Child Whisperer: the Ultimate Handbook for Raising Happy, Successful, Cooperative Children, which has sold over 75,000 copies worldwide. SOME OF THE PROBLEMS

of Wearing Hair Extensions by Louise Bailey

There are several reasons why women wear hair extensions, but while they can make your hair longer and fuller and overall achieve the effect of making you look more glamorous (what’s the point, otherwise?) they don’t come without their own set of problems. Some people wear extensions because they are unable to grow their own hair long, or as quickly as they would like to. Some people genetically cannot grow their hair past a certain point. Others might be able to, but realise that growing your hair long is a slow process: the average growth rate of hair is about 1 cm a month, so getting your hair from, say, shoulder length to mid-back is going to take some time. You could have an important date coming up, such as a wedding or your husband’s company dinner and there simply isn’t time to grow your hair long enough. Some people have thinning hair or bald patches. There isn’t much you can do about that except cover them up. Hair extensions can completely cover bald spots and they can provide a lot of extra volume to thinning hair.

ADD HIGHLIGHTS. You might want to add highlights to your own hair

without the risk of using chemicals or dyes, and carefully selected hair extensions can enable you to do this. You can also enjoy many different types of styles for your hair when you have extensions which you can’t do if your hair is shorter. However, wearing hair extensions may not be all sweetness and light and they can come with their own set of problems. Whatever type of hair extensions you use, they will take a little getting used to. There is no doubt that you get a feeling of having something extra in amongst your hair, and they do, of course, add some extra weight, albeit not a lot. Unless you use clip-in hair extensions, which you can put in yourself in five or ten minutes once you have got the hang of it, you are going to have to spend some time in the stylist’s chair. Even something as straightforward as tape-in hair extensions can take the best part of an hour, while weave or sew-in extensions will have you sitting there for several hours. The longer you sit, the more it costs. Furthermore, you are going to have to go back every few weeks to have the extensions removed and replaced, as your own hair grows out. On top of that, some types of hair extension are only good for one or two uses and then have to be replaced, so that is an additional cost. This last point is a very good reason for using top quality human hair extensions which, given some tlc, can last for up to 12 months.

IT COSTS MONEY. Overall, using hair extensions is going to cost money, un-

less you opt for very cheap synthetic extensions. However, although they are cheap these simply do not have the look and feel of real hair and you are very restricted in what you can do with them. You can’t apply any sort of heat because they are made of plastic (yes, really!) and you will melt them if you do. So you can’t use curling tongs, straighteners, or even blow them dry. You can’t dye them, either. You have to be very careful how you brush your hair, because if you get it stuck you can pull out your extensions, or even your own hair. So you no longer can brush from roots to ends, which is the “correct” way to do things. You have to brush up from the ends to the roots, but of course this means that you are no longer brushing oils from the roots to the ends so you have to add oil on to your ends manually so that they don’t dry out and become brittle. If you have any type of glue on your extensions you will need to wear a shower cap and try to make the gap between shampoos longer so that the shampoo doesn’t start to break down the glue. However, if all of this is putting you off, it shouldn’t. Google “hair extension specialist near me” and you will find one who can answer all your queries and advise you as to the best type of extensions for your particular hair. Too many of the same common items are found in pet stores today. Most of us love and pamper our fur-babies as if they were our children. Some of us have fun and like to dress them and buy sassy outfits. Today, we are excited to bring you some info on one pet fashion brand filled with style for your furshionista! See below our interview with the brand’s founder, owner and designer, who takes pride in putting these fashion pieces together for your fur-babies, Jan from C’mimi:

HOW WAS C’MIMI ESTABLISHED?

C’MiMi was established by accident! I never thought that what started as a hobby would become a full-time passion.

WHO IS THE PERSON BEHIND C’MIMI? My fur babies and I are behind C’MiMi.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I have a bachelors degree in political science and a masters in public administration.

HOW MANY YEARS HAS C’MIMI BEEN IN BUSINESS? It all started after the 2017 New York Pet Fashion Show and continues.

WHAT LEAD TO THE BLOOMING OF C’MIMI? I think that Imalaya, my Chinese Crested, was the start of a new chapter for C’MiMi. She was given to me when she was two years old and since then new opportunities have presented themselves. This coincided with the 2017 New York Pet Fashion Show where I strolled down the runway with Imalaya dressed in one of my designs. In New York, I met so many inspiring individuals who gave me advice, support, and encouragement. I am truly grateful for their friendship and warm welcome into the pet community. It’s a wonderful community of individuals devoting their time to help raise awareness and funds for rescue organizations. As a designer I have and continue to participate in events such as the New York Pet Fashion Show, Celebrity Catwalk, G Girl Production, International G Girls, Little Doggy Couture of Europe , and The Pup Scouts.

My mother, husband, and my close friends have and continue to encourage me to pursue my passion. All those who have purchased C’MiMi products have in so doing also encouraged me to continue to bloom through my fashions and enabled me to contribute in a small way to helping rescues causes.

WHAT CAUSES BENEFIT FROM C’MIMI?

Local and International rescue organizations benefit from C’MiMi. Charity fashion shows, items for raffles, items for sale, symbolic adoptions, yearly donations are ways C’MiMi helps raise money for rescues! We are always willing to donate to such causes, so please reach out! I also have a personal blog www.facebook. com/petfriendlymorocco where I post places that are pet friendly, local pet related information, as well as other articles of interest.

WHERE IS C’MIMI LOCATED? Rabat, Morocco in my little workshop at home.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE ONE OF THE HARNESSES MADE? Once the harness is made it takes on the average two days to embellish.

C’MiMi Party Harness is now patented! I designed this harness which was inspired by an accessory I saw my mother wear when I was a child. This accessory is worn by Moroccan women to keep the sleeves of their caftans up. Why you may ask did I have it patented? Well that is because of one fabulous woman whom I consider to be “dog fashion designer royalty”! Her encouragement and support has and continues to be a contribution to the blooming of C’MiMi.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE ONE OF THE PARTY DRESSES MADE?

All of C’MiMi dresses are lined and most of the embellishments are hand sewn, so it could take anywhere from two days to one and a half weeks.

SPRING 19

21

SPRINKLES

DO YOU HAVE ANY HELP IN THE MAKING OF THESE ITEMS?

For the time being I am able to make the items myself with the exception of the party harness which I order and then embellish myself.

DO YOU HAVE THESE PIECES MADE FOR ALL BREEDS OR ONLY SMALLER BREEDS?

It is usually the smaller breeds that tend to dress up either because they are fashionistas or because they need protection from the elements. That does not mean that larger breeds are excluded.

WHAT MATERIALS ARE USED FOR THE PARTY DRESSES?

All of my items are one-of-a-kind. I use vintage and recuperated clothing, silk, cotton, brocade and other suitable fabrics. I enjoy searching for my materials, some of which I purchase during my travels. I also use vintage jewelry, pearls, beads of all sorts, trinkets and the like. I try to mix and match textures, styles, and techniques so that each piece is unique. Most of my pieces have a Moroccan touch to them.

WHERE DO YOU SEE C’MIMI IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?

It is my hope that in the next five years the passion with which I make all C’MiMi items will touch the lives of more and more fur babies with its creative fashion and quality. It is also my hope that C’MiMi will be able to give back even more to rescue organizations. On this note, I would like to take the opportunity to reach out to your readership for a partner interested in producing the Party Harness. The harness is very versatile in that it can be made from a wide variety of threads and does not require an industrial manufacturing setting to produce. I envision an eco-friendly harness made from recycled threads, the proceeds of which could benefit local rescues.

HAVE YOU MADE ANY ITEMS FOR ANY KNOWN CELEBRITY? Of course! All my customers are celebrities!!

Set the Stage for a POSITIVE DENTAL VISIT FOR YOUR CHILD by Kimberly Blaker

Children’s visits to the dentist are typically a positive experience for both parents and kids alike. Still, between 9 and 15% of American adults fear going to the dentist, according to Cleveland Clinic. When parents are anxious about the dentist, that nervousness can instill fear and anxiety in their child, too. Adults and kids may fear going to the dentist for several reasons. Cleveland Clinic explains that perhaps the adult or child had a negative experience at the dentist or has heard horror stories that exaggerate their fears. Fear of pain is the most common cause

of anxiety. While some people also worry about the effectiveness or side effects of anesthesia or have a fear of needles. A negative experience at the dentist as a child can result in continued anxiety over routine dental care even into adulthood. So, learn how to prepare for your child’s first and subsequent visits to the dentist to ensure a positive, successful experience. This will help pave the road to a lifelong devotion to receiving routine dental care on a regular and consistent basis as your child grows.

Your child and the dentist – building a positive relationship early on

The earlier your child begins going to the dentist, the better. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit should be by the time your child turns one or within 6 months of when the first tooth erupts. At this stage, your child’s visit will be quick, simple, and pain-free. Providing your child with early positive experiences will help your child develop trust in the dentist. Depending on your child’s age and the dental office policies, many dentists will ask you to remain in the lobby during your child’s checkup. Typically, this is recommended for children over the age of 3. There’s a good reason for this. Separating a child from parents usually results in fuller cooperation from children. This can go a long way toward a more positive experience for your child. When your child is placed in the care of the dental staff, they’ll try to make your child’s first experience fun and informative. The dentist will explain and demonstrate routine procedures to your child and then perform those procedures. Your child quickly learns the dentist is someone to trust. Down the road, if your child needs non-routine dental work, the dentist will work with your child in a similar fashion to help alleviate fears. If you’re still concerned with sending your child in alone, call and ask to speak with the dentist or hygienist. Avoid causing your child alarm, and

make the call in private so your child doesn’t pick up on your anxiety. Explain your specific concerns so the dentist can address and alleviate your worries.

Approaching scared or uncooperative children

For a variety of reasons, some children become fearful or uncooperative during a visit to the dentist. If your child arrives unprepared or senses your anxiety, your child may develop undue worry. A previous experience could also cause stress. Children who are ill or have a physical or mental disability, a behavioral disorder, or developmental delay may also be challenging to treat. Whatever the reason, the way your dentist handles your child’s fears and behavior is vital to your child’s emotional well being and ability to cope with future visits.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has developed guidelines for behavior management that dentists should follow. Your dentist should use the communication techniques learned in dental school, including positive reinforcement, distraction, voice control, non-verbal communication, and the tell-show-do approach. These techniques all help reassure patients and gain their trust. In most cases, these approaches are sufficient, leading to visits that end on a positive note. If a practitioner lacks the expertise for handling a situation, your child should be referred to a dentist with the appropriate skills.

Prevent an experience that heightens your child’s fears by being proactive

• Contact your state’s board of dentistry when choosing a practitioner to make sure no disciplinary actions have been taken. • Inform your dentist of any medical, behavior, or other conditions that might affect your child’s visit. That way the dentist can communicate with your child accordingly. • Pediatric dentists have specialized training for dealing with situations that can arise with children. If you suspect your child may have difficulty with dental visits, seek a pediatric dentist.

Tips to get your child off on the right track

Read to your child before their first visit to the dentist. Try one of the following: Why We Go to the Dentist by Rosalyn Clark The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist by Stan Berenstain and Jan Berenstain Celebrate! Going to the Dentist by Sophia Day Dentist Trip (Peppa Pig) by Scholastic Curious George Visits the Dentist by H.A. Rey Share a DVD with your child such as A Trip to the Dentist Through Pinatta’s View. Also, express positive feelings about your own dental experiences. Don’t discuss non-routine procedures such as fillings. Explain to your child the basic procedures your child will undergo. For example, the dentist will count your child’s teeth and look at them with a tiny mirror. Avoid frightening terminology.

As your child grows, if you have concern over a possible cavity, don’t give your child too much information. This can result in undue anxiety. Your dentist should have the experience and expertise to talk to your child about such procedures in a manner that alleviates any anxiety your child might experience. If your child is anxious, don’t try to soothe your child by lying about a procedure or possible pain. Instead, try to alleviate fears that may be out of proportion to the situation. Finally, offer coping strategies to your child. Have your child practice taking long deep breaths. If you know you’ll be attending your child throughout the procedure (speak to your dentist first to confirm this), you can offer your hand to squeeze.

SIMPLE AND SUSTAINABLE WAYS TO BECOME A HEALTHIER YOU IN 2019 By Jennifer Bucko Lamplough and Lara Rondinelli Hamilton

your diabetes, or achieve a similar health goal, it's best to make small but powerful changes. Eventually, you'll see results.

If you’re ready to take some small yet mighty steps toward better health in 2019, give these tips a try.

CUT OUT SUGARY DRINKS IMMEDIATELY.

Sugary drinks like regular soda, fruit drinks, energy drinks, and sweet tea raise your blood glucose and add empty calories to your daily intake. Even though it can be a hard habit to kick, do all you can to eliminate these drinks from your diet.Replace them with fresh water, low-fat milk, flavored calorie-free carbonated water, and unsweetened tea and coffee.

PURGE THE JUNK FOOD.

Cookies, chips, sweets, and other snacks are hard to resist when they are an arm’s length away. The best way to avoid them is by removing them from your home. But don’t worry. When you’re craving a snack, you can try a healthier whole food option, like slices of avocado, a handful of nuts, kale chips, a

small serving of Greek yogurt, a piece of fruit, veggies with hummus or nut butter. These snacks are more satisfying and pack more nutrition than your processed favorites.

DO SOME RESEARCH AND IDENTIFY AN EATING PATTERN YOU CAN LIFE WITH. Studies show that there are many different eating patterns that can be helpful in managing diabetes. That means that if you’re trying to get your health in order, you don’t have to stick to a rigid plan that restricts many of your favorite foods. Some effective eating patterns include vegetarian or flexitarian, Mediterranean, low-carbohydrate, and low-glycemic.

CHOOSE LEANER CUTS OF MEAT.

Saturated fat--the kind found in animal protein--raises blood cholesterol levels, which is a risk factor for heart disease. An easy way to reduce your saturated fat intake is by choosing lean cuts of meat. Avoid or reduce your intake of lard, fatback, and high-fat SPRING 19

meats like regular ground beef, bologna, hot dogs, sausage, bacon, spareribs, and the skin from chicken and other poultry. Instead, choose skinless poultry; fish, turkey, and beef trimmed of fat, including round, sirloin, flank, and tenderloin; and lean cuts of pork, including center loin chop and tenderloin.

PLAN YOUR MEAL AROUND VEGGIES (INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM THE AFTERTHOUGHT).

At mealtimes, try to fill at least half of your plate with nonstarchy vegetables like spinach, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, bell peppers, Brussels sprouts, and eggplant. Veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and Brussels sprouts are delicious when roasted in the oven, and sautéing cabbage, bell peppers, and eggplant brings out their natural flavors. Finally, start any meal with a simple salad of mixed greens to help you meet your veggie quota.

TRY LETTUCE WRAPS INSTEAD OF

BREAD. Iceberg, green leaf, or butter

lettuce make a surprisingly delicious bread substitute. Use them in place of bread for your next sandwich. Nestle burgers or grilled chicken inside a lettuce “cup” in place of hamburger buns, and carefully wrap deli meats and toppings into a low-carb lettuce sub sandwich and secure it with wax paper and a piece of tape. Then tear the paper away as you eat.

EAT VEGGIE NOODLES IN PLACE OF PASTA. For a great pas-

ta substitute, sample the veggie noodles trend. Veggie noodles are a delicious, lower-carb option that can be eaten in place of grain-based pastas. A kitchen tool called a “spiralizer” quickly and easily turns vegetables into “noodles,” or you can use a standard vegetable peeler for a similar result. For even more convenience, you can now find these spiralized veggies in the freezer or produce section of many grocery stores. Try noodles made from zucchini, sweet potato, carrot, or spaghetti squash.Top them with chili, Bolognese sauce, or use them to make a cold “pasta salad” or noodle dishes like Pad Thai. Hint: You can also try cauliflower, butternut, or broccoli “rice” in place of regular rice for a lower-carb option.

SCHEDULE IN EXERCISE FIVE DAYS A WEEK. What you write on

your calendar and allot time for is more likely to get done. Your workouts don’t have to be extra rigorous to be effective. Just taking a brisk 30-minute walk each day--or at least five times a week--is a great way to get your heart rate up and kickstart weight loss and improved health. Of course, if you’d like to take up running or sign up for a cardio class, go for it! But if you are sedentary, it’s important to start slow and build up your endurance so you can maintain your new routine!

BUT DON’T DO ONLY CARDIO. GET IN SOME STRENGTH TRAINING TOO (EVEN IF YOU’RE WATCHING TV AT THE SAME TIME). Strength or resistance training makes your body more sensitive to insulin and can lower blood glucose. It also helps to maintain and build strong muscles and bones. The American Diabetes Association recommends doing some type of strength training at least two times per week. Activities include using weight machines, free weights at the gym, or resistance bands; exercises that use your body weight to work your muscles

like squats, lunges, planks, wall-sits, and push-ups; or activities that build and keep muscle like heavy gardening.

DO AT LEAST SOME OF YOUR EXERCISE OUTDOORS. There’s

nothing wrong with going to the gym, but if you’re feeling unmotivated to do your normal indoor routine, take your workout outside. The fresh air is invigorating, and studies show that being in nature decreases stress and promotes positive emotions. So be sure to trade out some of your time on a treadmill for a walk or jog in a local park. Or do lunges, push-ups, and other strength training in your backyard for a change of scenery.

SHAKE UP YOUR SEDENTARY WORKDAY EVERY CHANCE YOU GET. Sitting at a desk all day

can negatively impact your health. If the nature of your work causes you to be sedentary for eight hours a day, look for chances to build more movement into your day. For example, take a ten-minute walk after lunch, get up and move a little each hour (even if it’s just a walk to the water fountain or restroom), park farther away than you normally would, take the stairs instead of the elevator.

There’s no reason your New Year’s resolutions have to be painful, punishing, and ultimately unsustainable. Making more manageable changes--that you will actually enjoy--is a better game plan for success. Make 2019 the year you finally shift into a healthier lifestyle and start moving toward building a better you. Warning to all Pet Parents Who Have Small Dogs! Hello Pet Parents, as you already are probably aware, Hawk attacks along with other Birds of Prey are happening more frequently than ever before. As a pet owner we realize how our pets are part of the family, they mean so much to us and we would be devastated if anything happened to them. A Real Attack Occurred: About four years ago my brother came to me and told me that his little 11 Lbs. Yorkie was attacked, and to my surprise he told me that he was walking her on a long leash. Luckily, he was close enough to ward off the Hawk and save his little Daisy. He then asked me if I knew of any type of protection devise that would help your pet from being attacked, killed, or injured. I searched the internet and to my suprise, I found nothing. My Brother Wanted to Protect his Little Daisy: He then started looking for materials that would help detour or somehow keep these raptors away. There was netting, streamers, hanging shinny things in your yard, but nothing that would really save your pet if a predator wanted them. Reaching out to Experts in the Field: When we started speaking with Hawk experts, they informed us that there was no way you were going to stop a hungry Bird of Prey from going after a meal to feed themselves or their young. They usually go after smaller game such as chickens, rabbits, mice, cats, dogs, etc.

Talon Proof

Will a Bird of Prey Attack your Dog? The answer is yes, they will attack and could injure or kill your pet. This is becoming more common than ever before. The natural habitat for these birds has decreased due to fires, development, and an increase in human populations, taking away vital sources of food. Designing the Shield: We decided that little Daisy was going to help us design a protection shield that would be durable, comfortable, lightweight, and Talon Proof! It was very difficult to find a material that fit all those needs, but eventually we found it! A 20-guage polycarbonate, the same material used for making bullet-proof glass. Creating the RAPTOR SHIELD. This was the First Step to C How did we make this stiff piece of material comfortable for your pet? We searched all over to find a way and found the company ShapeMaster who was able to heat the Raptor Shield into a shell to contour to your pets body. Then they sew in an inner liner in and arround the shield, and finish it off with a built in comfort vest. The end result is a lightweight, comfortable, Talon-Proof Shield. We are happy to say that not one of our customer's pets have been injured or taken while wearing the Raptor Shield Vest. The shield is veterinarian reccomended as your pet's best weapon against all Birsds of Prey. Use Promo Code 16SHIELD5

4 WAYS TO EMPOWER KIDS TO BUILD A “WE” COMMUNITY By Kat Kronenberg, author of Love Big (January 2019) We live in a society that is all too often “every man or woman – or even child – for him or herself,” and these skewed values are shaping young generations. Do we really want to live in a world in which we can’t recognize that our neighbor’s triumphs and struggles are very much our own? What if, instead, we taught our children to embrace a “we” mentality as they grow and eventually shape their own communities? When I was a child and then a young woman, I faced very difficult losses, and because I didn’t feel included in a “we” community, I suffered. Pain, loss, and failure are a part of life and unavoidable, but _suffering _is optional. If we don’t take the time to reinforce an emotional foundation, tools for coping and helping others, and a sense of community for our kids, they too will suffer when they inevitably face hardship. Because of my personal experience, I am on a quest to turn the lights on for those in the dark, and that begins with teaching our young generations to build inclusive “we” communities in which love and belonging are at the core. How do we empower kids to build “we” communities? Here are four traits we must instill:

1. KINDNESS

What if we woke up each day with our families, best friends, and classrooms and made the collective decision to go out together (YES! LIKE SUPER HEROES IN CAPES!) and find ways to be kind, to bring a smile to someone’s day, and help others who may be struggling. It all starts with our commitment to being kind, and from there we can teach our kids that embarking on a mission of kindness can SPRING 19

28

SPRINKLES

truly build connections on all kinds of levels.

2. SHARING

When I am hungry, angry, lonely, or tired, I hold tight to what I think is “mine, mine, mine.” It is justified. I need it. I earned it. I can’t survive without it. I am living from fear and scarcity. When I get in this space, I realize I am alone by my own thinking. I don’t belong anywhere, not even to myself. We all feel like this from time to time – especially kids. How do we bridge the gap and get back to love and belonging? When we notice that our kids are in a negative frame of mind, we must teach them first to pause and take a deep breath. Then we can encourage them to ask themselves where they can help someone: share their time, their food, or their toys. When we share, we create smiles (ours and the recipient of our sharing) – and smiles connect us. Let’s teach our children that a smile is a “u-shaped bridge” that connects one point to another, and that the more we share, the more connected and happier we will feel.

3. LISTENING

Children often have a range of emotions coursing through them, and it’s up to us to teach them how to harness these emotions for good. When they are facing a trial, they can listen to how others got through a similar tough time to be uplifted and, in turn, uplift others. Listening will also make kids realize that they are never alone – there are always others who have gone through something before us, and we can all learn from each other’s experiences. We need to remind children that there are teachers, mentors, and peers who are

willing to listen to them, and that if they are willing to listen to others, we will be able to build a strong “we” community.

4. CARING

A hand, a listening ear, someone taking the time to see you and hear you, even cry with you – this is the most valuable gift we can give and receive. By extending ourselves to another person in need, we are telling them “I value you!” These gestures leave an eternal, angelic mark that changes people forever. We need to teach our children at a young age to look outside of themselves, and to realize that it feels just as good to give genuine care as it does to receive it. “Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all who ever have.” Margaret Mead Let’s be the change. It starts with us, as parents, mentors, teachers, and role models, and extends to the generations who will carry this world on their shoulders. They watch us carefully, so if we can find ways to be KIND, SHARE, LISTEN and CARE and teach them to do the same, then they will have the tools necessary and be empowered to build a better world. Kat Kronenberg is a coveted keynote speaker and presenter, as well as a Celebrated children’s book author living in Austin, Texas. As a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, she writes books that inspire us to encourage one another, fight for our dreams, and embrace joy. Love Big is the second book in a trilogy. Love Big (greenleaf book group, january 2019) is now available for preorder from Amazon and booksellers nationwide, and will officially be available for purchase on January 8, 2019. Part of the proceeds from the book will support www.we.org, www.grameen.org, and teachers via www.donorschoose.org.
