to the Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield! Whether you want to buy, build, finance, remodel or maintain your home, our members are ready to help. I am honored to serve as the President of such an outstanding organization and we look forward to helping our community remain as vibrant as ever. The Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield has a long tradition of excellence. Established in 1954, a group of industry professionals met with the goal to assist and promote the building industry. Today, their vision is still strong and we are comprised of builders, developers, remodelers, and associates in all areas of the residential construction and housing industries.
Why should you hire an HBA professional? Your home is one of your single largest investments. A trusted professional is what you need and the HBA has those professionals! The HBA has stringent insurance requirements for our Builders and Remodelers. Our construction professionals carry both General Liability and Workers’ Compensation Insurance. What does that mean for you, the consumer? Peace of mind, knowing that your building professional is properly insured and that your investment is safe. There are many examples of workplace injuries and claims that have fallen back to the homeowner because of a failure of hiring an “Insured Professional.” Don’t be that homeowner! Our members have great educational opportunities because of their membership. We pride ourselves on offering classes in many different areas such as building materials, OSHA compliance, business, customer service, green building, energy efficiency, plus many more.
Designations are also available to our membership. Our members can participate in courses, on a national level, and then complete a comprehensive examination to earn specific designations (i.e., Certified Graduate Builder, Certified Green Professional, etc.) Once they receive their designation, they must maintain their designation through continuing education. We are vested in keeping homes affordable. We work at the local, state and national levels to insure that governmental decisions do not stand in your way of home ownership. We also work to improve building codes and processes. Our members are actively engaged in “giving back” to the community through charitable projects and donations.

70% of builders typically use somewhere between 11 and 30 subcontractors to build a single-family home, according to NAHB analysis. Did you know that it takes an average of 22 different subcontractors to build a home? Indeed, a home builder relies on a number of highly trained workers to get the job done right. This includes dozens of skilled artisans and professionals, including carpenters, architects, engineers, plumbers, electricians, painters and landscapers. Analysis from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) shows that 70% of builders typically use somewhere between 11 and 30 subcontractors to build a single-family home. As the housing market continues to strengthen, home builders across the country and here in the Ozarks are seeking skilled workers – such as carpenters, framers and roofers – to help them build the American Dream. In fact, according to NAHB analysis of the federal government’s latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, the number of open construction sector jobs (on a seasonally adjusted basis) rose to 214,000 in July. This means there is ample opportunity for motivated students seeking a rewarding career path. Residential construction workers consistently express high job satisfaction and average salaries for Missouri, in this line of work, remain competitive with other industries in our area (see samples below). And, the residential construction industry is one of the few sectors where demand for new workers is rising. Parents, teachers, counselors and students must once again recognize that a vocational education can offer satisfying career paths and financial gains.
Build My Future invites students from throughout the Ozark Region to learn about opportunities associated with construction and business-related trades through a hands-on approach. While attending the exposition, students and teachers will participate in a variety of activities such as a welding simulation, brick laying, nail driving, and more, while also learning the vast variety of careers connected to the construction industry. The HBA of Greater Springfield is participating in this event planned by the Ozark Region Workforce Development Board and the Build My Future Collaborative. The inaugural Build My Future is scheduled for April 12, 2017, and, if all goes well, this will become an annual event.

Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design at a later point in time. Universal design enhances traditional design by incorporating elements that offer comfort, convenience and ease of use. Multigenerational families and first-time home owners alike will appreciate the often simple and inexpensive changes that make homes livable for all household members, regardless of age or ability. Homes with universal design are more user-friendly, require lower maintenance and complement an easy-living lifestyle. Here are five ways to implement universal design in your home:

Widen your doorways and hallways to accommodate strollers or relatives who might use a wheelchair. This allows everyone and everything to move more easily in and out of the house, and from room to room. Experts recommend 36-inch wide doors and 42-inch wide halls and stairways.

Build a stepless porch entry that will increase access and convenience without compromising aesthetics.

Install non-slip surfaces on floors and bathtubs to help everyone stay sturdy on their feet.

Install handrails on steps and grab bars in bathrooms to provide more support for household members of all ages.

Use lever door handles. This easy-grip hardware allows family members and guests to more effortlessly open and close doors. Plus, you can switch out your faucet and drawer handles with C-shape or D-shape hardware for even greater ease of use.
Home building and remodeling professionals who have earned the Certified Agingin-Place Specialist (CAPS), Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) or Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) designations have received training on how to build or renovate a home so that the occupants can live in the home safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of their age or ability level. They have been taught the strategies and techniques for designing and building aesthetically pleasing, barrier-free living environments.
