SPRING/ SUMMER 2014 GENERATING EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCES IN DANCE

WELCOME TO OUR 2014 SPRING / SUMMER PROGRAMME As South East Dance continues to grow and with our new home The Dance Space on the horizon, this spring feels significant to us as an organisation. We’re getting ready for new things – growing spaces for dance and our relationships with local communities, whilst developing interesting new ways of working with talented artists. All part of our continuing journey to ensure the best dance gets made and that more people have greater opportunities to experience it. This is also a time of celebration: we celebrate 20 years of creativity, innovation and wit from artists Yael Flexer and Nic Sandiland as they present Weightless at the Corn Exchange, Brighton on 5 March and Nic’s surprising installation Trip Hazard in the Brighton Dome café. We’re also celebrating Geminus, our first production for very young audiences (3 - 5yrs) and their families, created by Company Ubi (FR) who were awarded the DanSCe Dialogues 2 Early Years Commission. Our ambassador for The Dance Space, Hofesh Shechter, is this year’s guest director for Brighton Festival and we have worked in partnership with the Festival to present a stunning range of dance for England’s biggest multi-arts festival. Amongst all the great dance events, we are particularly proud to present our Associate Artists Ben Duke and Antonia Grove and a Brighton Festival commission for Three Score Dance Company – a site responsive piece set in the hustle and bustle of Brighton Station. As always, there are many ways you can get involved: see parkour and street running in the Circus Street regeneration area; join discussion and development opportunities for artists; engage with Jacob Dahlgren’s installation at Fabrica Gallery; and choreograph yourself into Protein’s (In)visibile Dances as part of our dance festival in Canterbury, Kent Dancing. We hope you enjoy our programme as much as we have enjoyed planning it.

Jamie Watton, CEO/Artistic Director and all at South East Dance 1

PERFORMANCES & EVENTS FLEXER & SANDILAND: WEIGHTLESS BRIGHTON DOME CORN EXCHANGE, BN1 1UD WEDNESDAY 5 MARCH

FLEXER & SANDILAND: TRIP HAZARD BRIGHTON DOME CAFÉ-BAR, BN1 1UD THURSDAY 27 FEBRUARY - FRIDAY 7 MARCH

Weightless questions the ‘weight’ of history: what is it that roots us down physically and emotionally? This 20th anniversary show carries Yael Flexer’s recognisable stamp of witty text (by Wendy Houstoun) combined with fast-paced, space-hungry movement. Nic Sandiland provides a bold digital element and music by composer Dougie Evans and cellist/singer Karni Postel completes the collaboration.

The performance of Weightless is complemented by the installation Trip Hazard - a series of catastrophic consequences instigated by the inadvertent actions of passers-by.

‘A big hit with the Café patrons during Brighton Digital Festival – so unexpected and surprising, we just had to have it back for Yael and Nic’s anniversary celebrations.’ Cath James, Programme Director, South East Dance

Plus, a preview of Three Score Dance Company in a new work created by Yael Flexer.

SOUTH EAST DANCE & SICK FESTIVAL PRESENT

KOEN DE PRETER: JOURNEY THE OLD MARKET, HOVE, BN3 1AS FRIDAY 14 MARCH

Join us for a celebration and showcase of excellence in youth dance (in all forms and styles) from across the region.

A man and woman are on stage. Two dancers, two generations. Koen is 32 years old, Alphea is 88. In Journey they probe the borders, push back boundaries in a performance about being here – now; about the strength of the human body. Together they bridge the gap between young and old, and 60 years of dance history, in a balancing act between the wishes and limitations of the human body. Journey brings two generations closer. These two people share a dream: to go on dancing to the end of their days.

U.Dance South East 2014 is a fantastic opportunity to see talented young dancers come together to share their creativity and be inspired by each other’s performances. It is also a selection platform for the national U.Dance 2014. • 6.30pm • £5 • Book: 01737 276500

Followed by a presentation and discussion with Prof. Stephen Harridge, Koen De Preter and Alphea Pouget. Stephen Harridge is Professor of Human & Applied Physiology at King’s College London.

PERFORMANCES & EVENTS EMMANUELLE VO-DINH: INSIGHT SOUTH EAST DANCE STUDIOS, KENT, BR8 7LG SATURDAY 5 APRIL Choreographed by Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh, (Director of Le Phare, National Choreographic Center of Le Havre Upper-Normandy). Four performers create a collection of different situations with multiple narratives, all based on a simple action: kissing each other. From the repetition of this action and its apparent simplicity, the piece develops as if behind closed doors: it is absurd, cynical and a reminder of how we relate to each other as humans. Audiences will have the opportunity to meet the artists after the performance.

DANSCE DIALOGUES 2: OUTDOOR LAB Insight is the first in a series of performances taking place in both France and the UK in spring / summer 2014 as part of Outdoor Lab, presented by South East Dance and Le Phare. Led by mentors Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh and Henrietta Hale, Outdoor Lab pairs artists and companies from both sides of the Channel to research and create new outdoor performance work for audiences in both England and France.

‘The Outdoor Lab will push each one of us to reassess and contextualise what we know about our practices, and this feels like a healthy way for the artists’ ideas to flourish.’ Henrietta Hale, Outdoor Lab mentor artist DanSCe Dialogues 2 is a cross-Channel cultural exchange project between eight arts organisations in southern England and northern France. Discover more at danscedialogues.eu DanSCe Dialogues 2 is a cross-border co-operation funded by the Interreg IV A France (Channel) – England co-financed by ERDF.

COMPAGNIE KÄFIG: BOXE BOXE BRIGHTON DOME CONCERT HALL, BN1 1UD THURSDAY 17 - FRIDAY 18 APRIL

A group of hi-rise city workers climb the career ladder, slide on the slippery slope of success, embark on an office romance and fight to make a killing before they get the push. A knockabout, slapstick, comedic choreography for the whole family combining authentic French Parkour with contemporary and urban dance.

France’s Compagnie Käfig return to the UK with a breath-taking show which fuses the noble art of boxing with dance. With choreography by Artistic Director Mourad Merzouki, the brutality and elegance of these contrasting worlds collide in a spine-tingling show which packs a knockout punch.

LOST DOG & LUCY KIRKWOOD: LIKE RABBITS BRIGHTON DOME CORN EXCHANGE, BN1 1UD THURSDAY 15 MAY

PROBE: RUNNING ON EMPTY THE OLD MARKET, HOVE, BN3 1AS TUESDAY 6 - WEDNESDAY 7 MAY

Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s short story Lappin and Lapinova.

Running On Empty is the story of a man, a woman and their encounters over time. Absurd, humorous and sometimes devastating, it journeys from a woman’s loss through her struggle for a future and the emptiness she must overcome to survive. How long will she keep running?

On a night in a city a man and a woman meet, have sex and fall deeply in love. Each night the lovers slip away from their real lives and disappear into a world that exists only in their shared imagination. A world in which they are not their normal selves, but King of the Rabbits and Queen of the Hares. But what begins as a game soon becomes a battleground, and the couple hurtle towards a tragedy of the quietest, saddest and most ordinary type. Suitable for ages 14+.

Told through dance, text and song this intrepid new work brings together an extraordinary group of collaborators under the artistic direction of South East Dance Associate Artist Antonia Grove. Suitable for ages 14+.
