How did you two meet? We met when I moved down to Bournemouth for university. I had visited a few weeks earlier to arrange a store transfer for my job at GAME. We passed each other on the stairs, which caused my mother to ask why I was blushing when I met her outside the store, but it wasn’t until my second shift that we properly met for the first time. We started seeing each other regularly as friends and within a couple of weeks we were officially a couple. How, when & where did the proposal happen? He proposed at a Bon Jovi concert in Hyde Park last summer. During my favourite song ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’ he asked me if there was anything that could make this day any better for me. When I turned around, he was down on one knee with ring in hand. I was so shocked I couldn’t speak, Jay had to point out later on that night that I hadn’t actually said yes. What made it better is that Jay had planned the proposal

to be when the crowd were asked to film the performance for the official tour video, so now we have the whole thing recorded. What’s the first thing you did to start planning your wedding? Set the date (October 14th). We had talked about weddings before and knew that we wanted an autumn wedding, so Jay suggested we have it on our anniversary

so that we didn’t have to remember a new date. I couldn’t argue with that logic. What’s been your favourite part? Spending days on Pinterest piecing together all the ideas for our Autumn theme and then working out how we could turn that into one cohesive plan. What, if anything, would you do differently? I can’t think of anything I would do differently. We managed to stay on top of everything by starting early, had a clear idea of what we wanted and everything

18

went so smoothly, we were quite lucky. Did you find it easy to stick to a budget? Very difficult. We thought we would be able to stick to a low budget if we kept things simple, but had no idea how much things would actually cost. I think it’s all the little details which add up, but doing things like designing our own stationery and hand making things really helped out. We were very lucky to have so many people who wanted to help; my mum and aunt arranged all the flowers and we had friends perform the music.

Tell us about your wedding day... Funnily enough I was the last person to wake up that day, apparently not even my wedding can keep me from getting a lay in. After some chocolate chip pancakes and a glass of Prosecco, my sister (who was also my maid of honour) did my hair and makeup while the other girls got ready. I walked in to the ceremony to ‘In These Arms’ by Bon Jovi, the instrumentals provided by our friends and the vocals were a recording by my cousin in Australia who couldn’t make it to the day. The registrar was fantastic, he kept

the whole ceremony light hearted and had everyone laughing which suited us perfectly and our close friend Amy did a beautiful reading called ‘Love Monkey’ by Edward Monkton. We then both walked out to the Jurassic Park theme, one of Jay’s favourites. We had arranged for all of the group shots to be done first, from largest to smallest, so that everyone could

20

mingle and enjoy the canapés once their photo had been taken. The venue also had mini golf, basketball and other garden games for the guest to enjoy while Jay and I were off with the photographer. During the wedding breakfast, we had each of the speeches between courses to keep a natural flow to the occasion, prior to the dessert, Jay and I had our first dance

which led into the father daughter dance during which other couples joined us. For the evening, we hired the Pavilion bar at the Haven hotel on Sandbanks for those who wanted to continue the celebration, whilst giving an opportunity for others who were unable to make the ceremony to be part of our day.

Fold the first circle in half with the right side out and using one long strand of Using a long piece of wire matching thread make large thread the large bead running stitches along the into the centre then the curved edge of the half circle. 3 medium beads on one end This will become your first and the remaining 4 on the petal. other. 6

Taking one end of the wire, thread on 4 small beads and bend around the medium bead, securing the wire in the gap between the mediums beads. Continue this until you have gone halfway round the circle then pick up the other ends of the wire and do the same around the other half of the circle. Secure and cut off any loose ends. Sew the beading to the centre of the flower and the sew the shoe clip blank to the underside of the flower making sure to position one of the petals at the top.

Beaded Headband

1

Cut a length of wire and thread one large pearl bead to the middle. On one end of the wire thread 2 medium pearl beads and 2 clear beads alternately then thread the end of the wire back through the centre bead.

2

Do the same on the other end of the wire and you will have a flower shaped beaded piece. Repeat step one until you have enough to cover the headband, I used 12 flower shapes.

3

Use the ends of the wire to secure the flowers to the headband starting at the centre, wrapping the wire around the band and through the spaces between the beads to completely secure.

4

Once you have wired on the first flower securely, add 2 of the smallest beads between the flowers. This will cover the wire and the width of the headband. Keep adding the flowers and beads along the length of the band to you liking, make sure you twist any ends together and tuck them away into the beads.

5

To cover any sharp points and keep the wire from getting caught in your hair you can glue a length of ribbon to the underside of the band.

Feather Sparkle Buttonholes

1

Using a feather as your guide cut some wire lengths to twice the size that you want the finished strand to be. Ideally you want about 6 pearl sprigs to make the buttonhole look effective.

2

For the first sprig thread a small pearl half way onto the wire and twist the wire a few times then add another and twist again and so on, until you have 5 pearls on a sprig.

3

For the second type of sprig use the large pearl first, twist the wire, then the medium and small. Twist the wire all the war to the end to create a single strand.

4

For the fourth sprig use one small pearl on a shorter piece of wire.

5

Arrange the sprigs on top of the feather and use a length of wire to wrap around the bottom of the sprigs and the feather to secure them in place.

6

Use a piece of ribbon or fabric to wrap around the bottom of the buttonhole to hide the wire and to tie in with your wedding colours.

How & where did the proposal happen? On my birthday - 17th August 2013. I had asked Adam for a Kenwood chef as I am a budding baker! When I woke up to the big box in our bedroom, I knew I had got what I wanted as this is the only present I was interested in but Adam made me open the box next to it first. This box contained a bottle of champagne and a champagne flute with ‘marry me’ engraved on it. He was then down on one knee with the most perfect engagement ring. I never knew he could be romantic! What date was the wedding? 30/08/14 About our planning Without my two mums and two dads, my wedding day would not have been possible. They all put their hearts and souls into making things and

making my dream day come true. As soon as I got engaged, Adam and I knew we would be married within a year. I already knew I wanted to get married at Holton Lee as I had fallen in love with the surroundings already. I just had to convince my husband to be and luckily we both agreed. As my husband is not the quickest at making decisions we went back and forth quite a few times on colour decorations etc. For our colour scheme we settled on navy blue and fuchsia, after a lot of time on Pinterest (and after the initial idea of blue & yellow, which quickly changed after Adam kept calling it the IKEA wedding)! Adam had no say in the theme - I wanted an Alice in Wonderland theme as I loved the things we could do with it and I loved the film as a child.

Our save the dates were sent out in October, again designed by me and mum. The invitations were the hardest part. Adam decided as it was Alice in wonderland themed we should have poems for everything on the invites so I set him the challenge of writing them all, which he did an amazing job of. My mums and I spent almost every weekend at boot sales looking at vintage china for the day. We supplied all our own plates, glasses and cutlery and found some quirky things for our china stacks which turned out AMAZINGLY. Was the wedding day everything you expected? After a year of planning and making, I was worried that everything would not come together as I had expected and I was worried that

31

all the stress would be for nothing. I was totally wrong and everything came together brilliantly and we didn’t forget anything. The day was beautiful but went so quickly! Adam’s words were that it was better than he could have ever expected. Honeymoon We stayed at Holton Lee the night of our wedding and went straight to Heathrow on the Sunday. We flew to New York for 3 nights and after that, Orlando for 18 nights. We had a fantastic 3 weeks spent mostly in the most magical place on earth; Disney World.

Expert Advice P

lanning a wedding is pretty time consuming. From the minute you set the date you have a timer running a countdown, and under pressure it can be pretty hard to find the time to take care of yourself. However, studies show that brides that don’t take time out to de-stress can end up resenting the planning stages. What can you do? Find a hobby that you can absorb yourself in! That could be going for a bike ride, making cakes or, if you fancy trying something different, pole dancing! Pole Crazy has weekly classes for anyone (yes, grooms to be can come too!) to try. Gone are the days of see-through shoes and sparkly pants - modern day pole dancing is about strength, agility and pure skill. Our students love the challenge classes present, and find that even after just a few lessons their tone and core strength is improved. I’m not very strong, can I still come? Yes! Pretty much everyone starts as weak as a kitten. When I started I’d just had my son, so had been off exercise of any kind for over 9 months. It’s hard to start with, but that’s the point. If it was easy then we wouldn’t have classes! If you stick with it, you’ll soon see a chnage in your phsyique. Is it very serious? I just want to have a laugh... While we take safety very seriously, the classes themselves are fun. We’re approachable and

34

zy.com orey Isobel St zy - www.polecra Pole Cra

relaxed, so if you’re worried about coming alone, don’t be, you’ll leave with new friends. The clothes look teeny-tiny. I hate shorts! The clothes are small to allow us to ‘grip’ the pole but if you’re unfomfortable with shorts wear whatever you feel good in! We don’t wear heels, but dance shoes are fine. Pole Crazy is about making yourself feel happy, be that because you learned a new spin or move, because you made new friends or because you have abs and arms of steel.

How did the two of you meet? We met in a gym in Australia in a tiny country town called Warwick. We lived in opposite directions of the town about 40 minutes from each other, so Warwick was a great meeting place! Marco was working at the gym when I joined. We were very shy at first and didn’t talk much but then we started training together. We spent more

40

time together, getting to know each other and would go for coffee and lunch during breaks or before we trained! I worked in a pub and so would finish late some nights, but would drive out after so we could watch a movie or just cuddle together until the early hours of the morning, I would then drive home and do it all again that night. Any spare time we had we would spend together. We were

inseparable! We did a lot of driving in Australia and ate out a lot. And of course trained frequently! My travel visa eventually ran out and I had to return to England, leaving him behind which was ,without a doubt, the worst time of my life. Marco had booked tickets to come and visit six weeks after my return date to England, so we counted down the days until we would be together again. We were living on alarm clocks to time Skyping each other properly so we wouldn’t miss each other by falling asleep or going to work. We were literally glued to our iPads ready for a Skype call at any time. July finally came around and Marco arrived, and never went back - we couldn’t be parted again! How, when and where did the proposal happen? Marco is super romantic, and he definitely went all out for the proposal. He took me away on a surprise trip to Venice just before my birthday. He booked a private water taxi to take us to our amazing hotel and on the second night we went out for an lovely dinner and afterwards we walked around for a little while. Eventually, we stopped on a bridge

over looking the water and the view of Venice. Marco got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was so excited and happy! We celebrated on the roof top bar of the hotel with Champagne. What did make me laugh was that he had hidden the ring in his camera case and he was hoping that I didn’t ask to take a picture all evening!

Tell us about planning the wedding… I think the most important thing about planning a wedding is to choose things you actually like, rather than trying to fit a theme as such, and choose what is important on your day. This can help with the budget. We knew our most expensive outgoing would be the venue and food as Marco is half Italian and food is very important to both of our families (we also have lots of foodies amongst us). Some brides may say that a dream car to arrive at their wedding is more important on their list, so then they can shift the budget to accommodate that...I wasn’t too fussed about having a videographer,

42

so then we could spend more on flowers or the bridesmaid’s hair for example. We feel we budgeted well and picked things we liked without having to compromise too much. We wanted a formal dinner, not a buffet which then helped to decide table designs and decorations. Marco and I agreed on everything, in fact, planning the wedding was pretty stress-free. Because we liked all the same things, researched like crazy and made a decision pretty much then and there, and we wouldn’t change a thing. We are both very organised and so used Excel sheets, lots and lots of lists and my amazing wedding planner diary which housed all of our ideas,

confirmations and scribbles. Definitely get a bride to be one of these they are a God send. What date was your wedding? We married on Thursday 21st August 2014. We chose a midweek wedding because summer is peak time so is ridiculously busy! However, we were able to book all of our favourite suppliers as they were available and some had a lower rate. We have a huge family and we just couldn’t bring ourselves to chop the guest list. Luckily, it fell on a bank holiday we gave our guests a mega long bank holiday weekend! Aren’t we kind? Was the wedding day everything you expected? Our wedding was everything we expected and more. Our wedding coordinator at the venue made the day flow so well and the staff were so accommodating. Every little thing you worried about before disappears on the day, it just didn’t matter if my hair fell out of place or Marco’s flower drooped and got knocked off, it was honestly the best day of our lives and we were so happy. We just couldn’t stop smiling.

Back in the olden days, the groom would literally abduct the bride away from her family and neighbours! Luckily, this did develop into more ritualised, fun re-enactments of taking the bride away. After the bride was taken, there was a tradition of the bride and groom ‘hiding away’ for 30 days to make babies! During this time, they drank mead, a honey sweetened alcoholic drink which was thought to increase fertility. This time was referred to as the ‘honeymoon’ period.

Time to address this magazine’s namesake! This rhyme is said to come from the Victorian times. “Something old” links the bride to her family and her past whilst “something new” represents good fortune for the future. “Something borrowed” is to symbolise the family and friends who will be there to help the bride and “something blue” stands for fidelity and loyalty. The silver sixpence is to wish the bride wealth in marriage. I have also read that the “something borrowed” should be from someone with children to wish the bride fertility! It has also been said that the “something new” and “something old” are to ward away and confuse evil spirits. In any case, we all know what our Something Borrowed should be!
