Is there anything more magical than a winter wedding? All glistening frost, the tinkle of bells and cosy fires. Whether you are planning a winter wedding, or attending one, there is a definite increase in their popularity. I blame Love Actually. Having got married in January, I know what it’s like to plan a wedding where the weather is pretty much a given write-off. We were lucky enough to have sunshine all day, but it was colder than Jack Frost’s you-know-what. We had a few (freezing) photos outside, but made do with the available indoor space - something you should consider.

Benjamin Roberts

Stella York

Benjamin Roberts is a notable designer of wedding dresses. From sassy to sophisticated, the collection is a reflection of the modern-day bride. We adore so many of Benjamin Roberts’ dresses, we need a whole day just for them! Find your dream ‘BR’ dress at Courtyard Bridal.

T

he fairytale princess look is a classic bridal fantasy. Flowing locks of hair, cinched in waist and aces of tulle swathed about your body. Both ballgown and princess style dresses suit pretty much any body type - although petite figures should be careful not to be overwhelmed by a dress - so we recommend trying on at least one in this style, even if it is just to satisfy that princess need for a moment!

Stella York is stocked by Wedding Time in Dorchester. Truly romantic dresses with a contemporary twist, these gowns are a bride’s dream. Pop in to see for yourself you won’t be disappointed!

aking the lead from red carpet looks, the ‘glamorous’ wedding day look is sleek sophistication with a sultry hint. Think Sophia Loren meets bridal - defined silhouettes, figure-hugging shapes and lots of va-va-voom. Illusion necklines and backs are a great way to show off skin, whilst also covering up. For those more daring, this Carla White dress (right) from Fab Frocks of Westbourne is pure Hollywood drama.

Nicola Ann

And for real showstopping impact, Bridal Reloved currently have this Inbal Dror dress (top right) in their Dorchester boutique. Its exquisite design is guaranteed to mean you’re a one-of-a-kind bride.

Boho Benjamin Roberts

Jenny Packham Anna Campbell

B

oho is a trend that’s here to stay. It’s the relaxed, festival look that is favoured by brides looking to avoid fuss and frou. Bohemian gowns are softly romantic, often presenting a ‘child of the wild’ look. Flowing and feminine, these gowns are immensely wearable by any body shape, and the real beauty is that your natural radiance is what completes the look. Both this Anna Campbell dress and Jenny Packham dress have bohovibes, and you can try both on at Bridal Reloved in Dorchester. No boho bride is far from a flower crown or rough-hewn bouquet. Wild flowers play an important role in creating the look. This gypsophila halo by Concept Flowers is a simple, yet gorgeous way to dress your hair.

VINTAGE V

intage is, well, timeless. From Gatsby inspired 20s dresses, like this Benjamin Roberts dress from Courtyard Bridal (above) to the kitch tealength dresses loved by 50s fanatics. The beauty of vintage is you can play the aspect up or down. For a full vintage affair, go for a bird-cage veil or a pearldrape, like the above by Tiaras by Becky lace, and a pop of red lipstick, heck, you can even get some pin curls!

Isobel & Richard All photography by Tim Churchill Photography

Teenage Dream

Rich and I met at school initially. We dated briefly, but it wasn’t serious. When we met years later, lots had changed, but our attraction to each other was still the same.

Sun, Sea & Sparkles!

When I was 6 months pregnant with our daughter, we had a family holiday to Majorca. One day, we were walking along the sea front, when Rich asked me to walk along a jetty. as we got to the end, he got down on one knee. At first, I didn’t know what he was doing on the floor, but when he pulled out the most perfect ring, I was so happy!

Getting Started...

We decided that we needed to wait until after we had had our baby to start planning. And then, once she was born, we said buying a house was more essential. Annoyingly, the house sale fell through, BUT it did mean one thing...

wedding planning! I arranged a romantic dinner for the both of us one evening in February, and while we were talking, I took out a ring for him, and proposed right back - this time with a date in mind. He said yes! So we started making plans for our September wedding. With only seven months to bring it all together, I wasted no time booking in suppliers and appointments.

What mattered to me... I knew how I wanted the day to look, and I spend hours looking

up pictures and ideas. My theme was loosely based on Disney, since my dress was the Cinderella dress by Alfred Angelo. As soon as I had tried it on in Isobel’s Bridal, I knew it was the one. I tried on five dresses that day, and this was the second one on. I just loved it! My friends and family helped me make my vision come true, from making me a brooch bouquet, to paper mache pumpkins and roses in bell jars.

I’m pretty sure Rich’s favourite part was either the Tesler he arrived in or the bar by A&D Mobiles Bars!

T his Bride's Advice

Try not to stress. We had torrential rain during the speeches, and the power cut out but the whole wedding party pulled together, got the power back on and the feeling of everyone there for you is overwhelming!

ways to save on your wedding day

7

Ask your groomsmen to wear their own suits. You can buy matching ties to bring the look together. This works especially well if you have mismatched bridesmaids too!

15

Speak to your florist about which flowers are in season. Ordering Sunflowers in December will mean higher costs for importing. Oh, and red roses in February will be way over what they usually are!

16 17 18

TheFood

Seasons also apply to food, so depending on when you are getting married, certain meats and vegetables will be more readily available. Having an outdoor wedding? A BBQ or hogroast is a great way to feed lots of people for less money.

Have a smaller cake on show, but order a slab cake as well, that way you’ll have a the beauty of a professional cake and all your guests will have a piece!

19

Invite guests to bring a cake for a ‘bake off ’ style competition where you pick the top three cakes. People love the challenge and you’ll have a dessert table sorted!

20

Don’t add pudding to your sit down meal, ask the caterers to serve your wedding cake as the pudding instead. You can add cream or ice-cream as a side to it!

ThePlanning

21

Create a budget spreadsheet...and stick to it! Simple, but so many brides buy little ‘last minute’ items or pick up bargains in sales that they never use.

22

Enter competitions! Often people forget to enter or think they don’t stand a chance. (editor side note: I won my wedding dress in a competition, it’s so worth the 2 minutes to do!)

23

Facebook has a ton of groups you can join, where small businesses trade. Their overheads are less, so their costs are usually too - but do your homework - check out ratings and likers, and ask for feedback from other brides before paying any money and ONLY use Paypal to pay, selecting to pay for goods and services. This is the only way you are protected from scams.

24

The sales after Christmas and Valentines Day usually mean there are lots of decorative items at a reduced price. Don’t buy for the sake of buying, but keep an eye out for items that you truly need.

25

Don’t be afraid to ask your suppliers for cheaper deals, but make sure you ask how you can reduce your quote. Don’t expect the same service or product for less money!

Opulent Occasion Black and red together make for a striking pairing. The red really ‘pops’ against a black backdrop, and when you add gold to the mix, you get a really sophisticated and elegant palette. Pick one as your key theme colour, and use another as an accent - gold works particularly well as an accent colour. This also has a double benefit if you or your partner are AFC Bournemouth fans!

Pug Lovin’

Our wedding weekend was amazing and the best two days of our lives! We chose to have our wedding ceremony at The Sandbanks Hotel. Our pug, Billy, was able to walk down the aisle and was then picked up after the ceremony, while we all went out to the terrace, overlooking the beach for drinks and canapes, listening to a steel band. From here, our guests were transported to the ferry by two vintage buses and we went in a cool camper van. It was really nice going on the ferry over to Studland, as it gave us 10 minutes to just be with each other. Our reception venue was Shell Bay Restaurant, which has the most beautiful views and the staff are incredible! We enjoyed delicious food surrounded by all of the people we love! A close up magician went to all the tables and wowed everyone – we kept hearing shrieks

30

as everyone was so amazed! Our amazing cake was in the shape of Billy, our pug and everyone was so impressed. We didn’t want to cut it, it was too nice! After dinner, guests were able to enjoy Prosecco from a really cool yellow Prosecco Van and ice cream from a traditional ice cream bike with a saxophonist playing in the background. We had arranged for a jet ski company to attend and give guests rides in the harbour – this was a great addition to the day! After our first dance, three ‘Oompah Loompas’ arrived from nowhere on to the dance floor. None of the guests knew they were going to be there and obviously didn’t expect it, as we weren’t having a themed wedding! They were fabulous and danced with all the guests and had so many photos taken. We know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but we love

Oompah Loompas and had a blast with these guys! When the amazing day ended, all of the guests made a sparkler tunnel for us, which was so pretty! The night ended in getting a party bus back to The Sandbanks Hotel, were we stayed for the night.

Round Two...

The fun didn’t end there though, as

South Coast Weddings, our wedding planners, had organised a festival party for us in our garden for day 2! It started at 3pm, which gave us time to wake up slowly and enjoy breakfast at the hotel, before heading home. As we pulled into the drive, we could see a tipi set up and a marquee with a food van and a bar. It looked amazing and before we knew it, the fun had begun! Guests enjoyed massages, which for some was very much needed after too much partying, glitter face painting, games, inflatables, snacks,

drinks, a slip n slide, pool fun, a band, a fire pit with marshmallows, a photo booth and a silent disco! We had chosen to keep all of the activities out of our house, so needed to hire luxury loos from Luxury Little Rooms. This turned out to be a really good decision as we were going on honeymoon almost straight away so

had no worries about having to clean the house. We had so much fun and wouldn’t change a thing about the whole weekend. If we had to give advice to other people planning their weddings, we would say: Hire a wedding planner – it’s so worth it for no stress! Also, enjoy every minute of the day – it goes so quickly! Lastly, hire a

decent photographer and videographer. They’re both worth every penny and they’ll be your memories forever more!

Eleanor & Oliver All photography by Tim Churchill Photography

before I got married the month ched, and have laun ed row Bor ing eth Som re my wedding never had a chance to sha h wedding fift experience, so now, on my story! ding wed my e’s her anniversary Editor Eleanor

False Start

We through friends - initially we were just sending texts, but Oliver abruptly stopped replying one day. Months later, he joined a group of us for an afternoon he’d forgotten who I was! After spending the evening together too, he eventually remembered, got my number again and asked me out!

When you know...

After a few weeks of dating, Oliver pretty much lived at my flat anyway, so we made it official and he moved in. One (tipsy) night celebrating, we joked about dashing off to Vegas to get married.

As we were talking, we both realised we were pretty serious about the idea - not the Vegas part - my mum would’ve killed me but the getting married part. A few weeks later, he produced a ring and planning began!

Winter Wonderland

We decided pretty early on to go for a winter wedding. Partly because we figured things would be cheaper and party because we’d have more choice on dates. After considering the week between Christmas and New Year, we found it was probably MORE expensive so settled on January 28th - the

day after my birthday! Because we expected poor weather, we had the option of choosing a venue without a garden or outside space. Dorchester Corn Exchange met all of our needs; we could use our own caterers, have our whole day there and was well within budget. Once that was booked, the ball started rolling.

Love is all you need

I’m really close with my sisters, and without my knowledge, they arranged an ‘auction’ to raise money for my wedding dress, as my budget was so small. All kinds of things were auctioned off, from wrapping presents to

tattoos! They raised £1000, which not only bought my dress and veil, it also helped pay for the DJ and food! All was ticking along nicely. Being an avid magazine fan (hence the creation of Something Borrowed!), I read at least one a month. Imagine my surprise when I received an email from one telling me that I’d won a wedding dress in a competition I’d entered! I could pick any gown from the Veromia website, and it wold be sent to me FREE!!

A happy new year

Our wedding day was incredibly relaxed - we got married later in the day, at 3pm and had afternoon tea instead of a traditional wedding breakfast. We ate and drank from vintage china Oliver and I had spent the summer collecting, and we were lucky enough to have lots of help donated from themed cupcakes to Champagne jelly to toast with. Tim Churchill, our photographer, is a good friend, so he offered his services too.

Bride's Advice

Decide what means the most to you and figure that out first. The rest of your day will go from there. It mattered to us to have as many friends and family present as we could, so venue size was paramount. Once we booked that, we could use that as a basis for themeing and booking the rest of our day.

Sourcing and booking your wedding bar is a task that seems pretty straightforward - ‘Do you have wine, beers and spirits?’ ‘You do? You’re booked!’ But what about making more of it? A signature cocktail as a welcome drink is one way to make your wedding unique and distinctive. If you’re looking for something more non-traditional for your welcome drink, A and D Mobile bars are happy to discuss and design a cocktail to greet your guests with. With naming the drink, you could try mixing your surnames, or even your first names or naming it after your wedding theme, if you have one. Here are a couple of suggestions of simple cocktails you can edit and rename to make them totally unique to you!

Wedded Bliss

Pour the vodka, cranberry juice, orange and line liqueur in to a cocktail shaker and shake well. Pour in to a Martini glass and serve with fruit garnish.

For those brides that want to make their own wedding details, we bring you...the Crafty Bride. DIY ideas for you to try at home. This issue you’ll learn how to make a sparkly feather buttonhole - a gorgeous and distinctive detail that is super easy to do yourself!

Feather Sparkle Buttonhole

Add some unique glamour with these sparkling feathered buttonholes! They make a stunning alternative to a floral buttonhole that your bridal party and groomsmen can save as a keepsake of your special day.

HOW TO MAKE You will need:

White feathers . Assorted sized pearls . Jewellery wire . Wire cutters . Ribbon or fabric strips . Glue

1. Using a feather as your guide cut some wire lengths to twice the size that you want the finished strand to be. Ideally you want about 6 pearl sprigs to make the buttonhole look effective.

twist again and so on, until you have 5 pearls on a sprig. 3. For the second type of sprig use the large pearl first, twist the wire, then the medium and small. Twist the wire all the war to the end to create a single strand.

2. For the first sprig thread a small pearl half way onto the wire and twist the wire a few times then add another and

4. For the fourth sprig use one small pearl on a shorter piece of wire. 5. Arrange the sprigs

on top of the feather and use a length of wire to wrap around the bottom of the sprigs and the feather to secure them in place. 6. Use a piece of ribbon or fabric to wrap around the bottom of the buttonhole to hide the wire and to tie in with your wedding colours.

Do’s and Don'ts

frompastbrides... Do DO do as you please. Not everyone would have the same type of wedding, so don’t give too much thought to other people’s opinions. If you love it, you make it happen! DO include your future husband/wife in the planning. They might only want a small role, but it’s your day together, don’t exclude them from all the fun(!). DO assign someone to carry your lipstick/purse/phone. You’re likely to be moving around a lot and looking after a bag is hassle. DO take five minutes on the day just to escape and be alone together, otherwise you may not get any time just for you two. DO take it easy at the bar. You want to remember your wedding for all the right reasons, not for spending the evening/morning after feeling pants! DO enjoy every second, it flies by and before you know it, you’re a Mrs and the party is done :(

Don't DON’T lose sight of why you’re getting married - yes the flowers/cake/dress/dove release is important, but it’s not the reason you’re saying ‘I Do’. DON’T get in to huge debt for the sake of your wedding day. Starting married life with credit card debt and loans can cause stress. DON’T forget to eat! In all the excitement, it’s easy to get distracted from your meal but you have a) paid for it and b) you want to make sure you don’t get too tipsy too early! DON’T sweat the small stuff. If a minor mishap happens on the day, try and shrug it off and let someone else sort it out. DON’T feel embarrassed to ask for help with your dress in the loo. It’s a bride’s right ;-p DON’T worry if things don’t go to plan/time. Enjoy what’s happening and make memories! DON’T worry about the weather. You can’t change it, so embrace it!
