8 Ah, 2018 - full of promise, plans and preparation. Whether this is the year that you say ‘I do’ or it’s a year jam-packed of creating Pinterest boards, cutting pictures from magazines and enthralling everyone with sentences starting ‘My wedding...’ then in here you will find loads of tips, ideas and suppliers that will help you to make your day exactly what you want. Having got married in winter myself, I have a soft spot for ‘out of season’ weddings. My one tip is this - be organised. Spreadsheets and planners will absolutely make everything easier - even if they are a pain to update all the time! We’d love to hear from you. Send your comments, stories and ideas to us! Love,

Fern & Chris All photography by Ann Aveyard Photography

Midnight Magic

Chris and I met at a friend’s New Year’s Eve party 7 years ago. After exchanging numbers we decided to meet for our first date at our local pub for a drink. We had a great evening getting to know each other and it blossomed from there.

All’s Fair

We planned to go away for the weekend, first stopping off for one night in Kent with my family and then onto a hotel. We arrived, and to Chris’s surprise they were hosting a wedding fayre - I kept joking we should go and have a look around! We enjoyed an afternoon tea and a trip to the spa and just before we went down for dinner, Chris got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. After a few tears (on my part), we got some Champagne and enjoyed a lovely dinner together celebrating.

20

Started With a Click

The first thing we did was write a list of all our friends and family so we had a rough idea on the numbers ready for looking at possible venues. I then googled lots of different venues and started to book in a couple of dates to go and look around.

Dressed to Vow

I wasn’t too sure what to expect when I started my search for my dress. The first time I tried on a dress and looked in the mirror I got the giggles, I couldn’t believe I was actually trying on wedding dresses, it all seemed a bit surreal. I was recommended to visit Minster Bridal in Wimborne and went along with my two bridesmaids and my Grandma. I had seen a few styles online and fell in love with one of them as soon as I tried it on. I quickly made another appointment to

21

go back with my mum and sister and said ‘yes to the dress’ that day!

What Really Matters

For Chris and I, it was important for us to have all of our closest friends and family together to help us celebrate the next chapter in our lives. We wanted to make sure everyone was going to have a great day, bringing both families together. Chris and I also love good music and a dance so it was important to make sure everyone was up and dancing by the end of the night, which was definitely achieved!

T his Bride's Advice

I’m a worrier, so my advice would be to make sure you don’t keep all your worries to yourself. My bridesmaids were my sister and my two best friends and every time I had a worry about something, even if it was over something really silly, they would always reassure me and do all they could to help make it something I didn’t have to worry about for long.

Holiday Romance..

Darren and I were on holiday in Tenerife in 2015. We had gone for a nice walk along the beach and ended up in a lovely bar over looking the sea, when he got down on one knee.

T he 'One'

Simply put, my wedding dress was amazing, I loved it so much. It was the first dress I used the ‘L’ word for, and once I had seen "Once I had it, no other seen it, no dresses other dresses compared. It was a compared" Sophia Tolli, sweetheart I knew I wanted neckline, fishtail, to get married at The lace body and Italian Villa budget covered in crystals. depending, so as soon as we got back from the holiday, I made an appointment to chat with their wedding Darren wore a grey co-ordinator. Next we booked the photographer It was the best day of Samantha Davis, this our lives, every minute is who I wanted from of it was perfect. The day one. I knew she food was incredible and gets booked up far in the staff were amazing advance, so as soon as and helped the day we had a date, I secured run so smoothly. We her as well. were so lucky with the weather and after a

quick change of plan with the timings, Sam suggested we went to the beach after the meal instead of after the ceremony and we were so glad she suggested it as we got some lovely sunset photos. All of the speeches had everyone laughing and lots of guests said it was the best wedding they had been to - which was so lovely to hear. It’s so wonderful having all your family and friends in one room to celebrate such a special day and I felt like a princess for the day.

Pot of Gold...

Darren had a budget in mind (which I instantly knew wouldn’t be enough!), but we didn’t actually sit down and set a budget. We didn’t really have any savings in place ready for a wedding either, so we ended up booking things and paying

33

deposits as we went which probably wasn’t the best idea, as it was quite stressful getting all the money together before final balances were due. But we paid for it all ourselves, except odd things my parents helped, with like the harpist and my veil and tiara etc. So we felt really pleased with ourselves that although it was a struggle, we woke up the day after the wedding not owing a penny.

questions Absolutely. It’s actually more common now to have money gifted rather than couples issuing a traditional wedding list. Guests appreciate that the majority of people have set up home, and are not in need of new cookware, vases or cutlery, and would rather give a gift that’s useful. However, you do need to tell your guests that that’s what you’d like, as saying nothing just causes mild panic! There are quaint little poems that phrase a request for cold hard cash in a more socially acceptable way that ‘Show me the money’. If you feel asking for money is too awkward, then there are ways to get things you really can use. There are gift registry websites set up so you can ask for contributions towards anything from new bathrooms to exotic honeymoons. We’ve even heard of one couple who asked for donations towards IVF, which while is unusual, is also pretty touching. It’s safe to say that in 2018, you can pretty much ask for anything!

I’m not very religious, but I want a church wedding. Is that frowned upon?

07 721 7 38005/01202 383694 www.facebook.com/BuntingbyChris

There are two arguments to be made here; the first is that if you aren’t religious, why would you want a religious ceremony? A church, for many people, is a place to commune with God, and using it because it looks nice in photographs can be a little insulting. If you aren’t religious at all, and you want to marry in church for other reasons, such as family ties, tradition or sentimentality, it’s best to really think about what your wedding and marriage means to you. Saying vows to a God you don’t believe in may take away from your emotion on the day, and a ceremony where you don’t have religious content might suit you more.

ST 2 IL 01 LA 8 VA DA IL TE AB S LE !

Can I ask for cash instead of presents?

Bespoke bunting for weddings & occasions

The professional choice for your big day.

The other side of the argument is that even if you aren’t especially religious, a church wedding can be one of the special times that you do consider God and worship. Many churches benefit greatly from the funds a wedding generates, and there are often church groups that enjoy being involved flowers, choirs, organists - it’s a real community occasion! If you would like a religious wedding, then the first thing you need to do is get to know your parish minister, or if you are planning on marrying outside your local parish, you need to establish your connection to that church.

Carly & Luke All photography by Charly Woodhouse Weddings

Baaa-my Proposal

In December 2016, Luke and I went down to Kimmeridge to watch the sunset, but I fell in the mud on the way down! As the sun went down, he put his arms around me, and asked if I’d be his wife. I said yes. Then on the way home we rescued a sheep!

God is a DJ

My first planning task was to ask my favourite DJs Martin & Tom (Still-Moving DJs/ The Uplifter) what dates they had free in the summer...I then started looking for venues that could match one of a handful of dates.

DIY or DI-Cry?

It was a stressful start to the big day. The night before, I was up a ladder in the dark, dressing the Italian Stone Rotunda next to the lake with lace, and at 1am myself, my Maid of Honour and four Bridesmaids were making the bouquets. And then, at 5 am, we were up finish setting everything up that we couldn’t do in the dark. Then, as I was getting my hair done, I could

42

hear a conversation between my now husband and my brother Craig, who was an Usher. “Craig, where are your trousers?”. He was wearing his shirt, suit jacket, shorts and flip flops. “Luke, where are your trousers?” “Oh !*&!, (a word that can’t be written), I’ve left both of our trousers at home!” Shortly after this was the realisation that he had also left all of the button hole flowers, (that I spent hours making), at home. One for every single male of both of our families. Luckily his friend who was staying at ours was running really late and was still at home. My husbands delicate area was saved. Thankfully, after the morning’s drama, the rest of the day was the most incredible day of our lives. The venue is the most stunning place ever. It’s what dreams are made of. I had decorated it with dream catchers, flower wall hearts, and a giant boho deckchair, all of which I designed and made. We had some chairs for the service, but we also had crocheted and knitted blankets and pillows all over the lawn

for people to sit on. Our chocolate Labrador, Henna, was our ring bearer and I had made her a floral harness to attach the rings box to. My bridesmaids and I all wore crochet barefoot sandals for most of the day, that I had made us. Our confetti was dried rose petals from our garden, and the confetti cones I made. They had the words to our first dance on the outside, and the words to the song we walked down the aisle to on the inside. Instead of a wedding book, we had a wedding bench that my Dad made us. Everybody signed it, I used Pyrography later to make the messages permanent. My Dad also made us a festival sign for our wedding, and I made a silk flag. We had a wish tree too, and everybody got a handmade wristband as they arrived. Our guests were camping in the orchard and staying in the dorms onsite, so it was like a fairytale boho festival. To eat, we had sandwiches, scones (I even made the jam for the scones, Gooseberry, Rose & Cardamom, and Toffee Apple &

43

THE DETAILS Blackberry), Pimm’s and Rum on the lawn for lunch, and live bands all afternoon, who also sang a Capella as we came down the aisle. Everybody just seemed to click, there were 100 people, and they seemed like they’d all known each other for years. As the evening drew in we had the speeches, cutting of the cake and the first dance, then enjoyed a BBQ, with meat supplied by a friend and delicious vegan pizza, before dancing the night away to vintage electro swing and reggae. Our wedding cake was

44

a little different too. I made a log cascade, and each of my bridesmaids, my Mum and Step-dad, Dad and Step-mum, and Luke’s Nan & Mum made a cake of their choice to go on the cascade. It was so personal, I loved it. Our wedding rings were personal too. I’m very lucky to have an auntie who is a designer jeweller (Jacqueline Bromley Designer Jeweller). She runs workshops where you and your partner design your own wedding rings, then she teaches you how to make them for each other. I designed

my earrings too, and my cousin and his girlfriend paid for them to be made as a gift. Lots of my close friends joined me on my craft mission too, helping me make everything. The family got involved painting marquee poles one sunny afternoon, and all the guests that stayed on the Friday night as well helped cook food and set up. It was just so lovely everybody being part of our special day, we felt so honoured and grateful, because their help made our day perfect.

So when I was asked to pop along and see what they had to offer couples getting married, I jumped at the chance. So what’s special about The Lord Bute? Um... pretty much everything! The food is out of this world, and their unique approach to catering weddings means that your guests get a choice of dishes on the actual day itself, creating that restaurant feel - it’s a concept I love! I was lucky enough to see the venue getting ready for a wedding the following day, so I could see how easily the space allowed for larger groups, and just how beautiful it all looked. Couples can have their ceremony, drinks, wedding breakfast and evening reception all in the same space - and with the experienced wedding co-ordination team on hand, the changes between each are slick and seamless.

And let’s not forget the most incredible bedroom suites that the hotel offers. The Bridal suite in particular is exactly what a bride wants as she prepares for her big day; there’s a lounge area for getting ready, and the bathroom is HUGE. There’s a private garden, which is prefect for stealing away for a few private moments. If you’re looking for a hotel to hold your wedding in, then The Lord Bute must be one to consider.
