Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles and ATVs at Monticello Motor Club Each year the International Motor Press Association (IMPA) gathers its members and a collection of new vehicles for them to test. This year’s event, in Monticello, NY, was a bit dampened by showers, but otherwise will go down as a memorable time. The racetrack is open to members only on the second day, so when we first arrived we looked at the choice of vehicles for the road and it was an easy one. A GREEN Bentley Continental GT Speed was just waiting for a chance to motor through the beautiful autumnal scenery and coddle its occupants. With 626-hp and 605 lb-ft of torque, the 6.0-liter twin turbo engine can propel the 5,115 lb. vehicle to speeds of right around 200 mph. We set no top end records, but instead enjoyed the locomotive like acceleration and the plush interior finished with top end materials by craftsmen and women. The Mercedes Benz AMG GT had a steady line of suitors awaiting it, so we hopped into the waiting MB C63 S AMG. The near racing bucket seats spoke to the car’s purpose: Speed. The twin-turbo V8 did not disappoint. While even the most comfort-oriented suspension setting still gave a firm ride, the car’s handling was far superior to anything we could have tested on the road. Another high point of the first day was the Chevy Corvette Coupe. As much as I enjoyed my time back home in a C7 Convertible, the Coupe’s lines completely seduced me. The $1,000 extra blue paint seemed well worth it, as it made the car look like $200,000 worth of exotic for $60,000. Dodge provided some fun with a Challenger Scat Pack Shaker. The shaker hood scoop was a stalwart of the late Sixties/early Seventies muscle car scene. While my colleague and I discussed how silly it was to have your engine stick out through a hole in the hood, we both enjoyed seeing the mighty Hemi V8 “torque over” the engine when the throttle was blipped. Oh yes, this car was fast, too. A GMC Denali provided a bit of a tall palette refresher. The workhouse in a tuxedo was anything but slow. But, the truck’s size prompted us to dial back our driving to a more sedate level. The interior trim was excellent, and the induction cell-phone-charging pad atop the center console added a particularly high tech touch. Lexus had their new Coupe the RC F available. The 467-hp 5.0-liter V8 seemed more refined than some of the mega-hp cars we had just driven. The interior felt fresh off the drafting table (really, who uses these anymore?) The exterior seems a bit too complicated in pictures,

By Mike Covello

but all flows together in the flesh. While the driving experience seemed a bit tame after the Corvette, it delighted us with its quiet competence. Arriving back at Monticello Motor Club the next morning, the track was open under threatening skis. A Nissan 370Z seemed like a good way to refresh myself with the track layout. A third chicane had been added to the back straight to slow overly enthusiastic journalists down a lot; sigh. The Nissan acquitted itself well, with a rev matching manual shifter that added to the experience. A BMW 228 was next. The twin turbo 2.0-liter provided a decent amount of go-power. The suspension and ease of ability to push the car was what stuck with me. Back in the pits I found out the car had all the right options to optimize its track performance, including Michelin Pilot Sport tires. Another Dodge Challenger Shaker presented itself, and who was I to argue. Having driven the 707-hp Hellcat Challenger last year, I was prepared for the cone “gates” appearing to shrink in size. The Challenger Shaker seemed more suited to a race track, as power could be put down a lot sooner coming out of a corner. My favorite car on the track was the VW Golf R. The 2.0-liter four sends nearly 300 hp to all four wheels and that helped enormously when powering through the turns. I could almost see owning one of these when this drivetrain is available in the Golf/Jetta Sportwagon body. While this year I did not get a chance to try the off-road course, I did get out on two Honda motorcycles. The CTX is a newer model aimed at the beginning rider. Its low seat height and low center of gravity made it seem friendly. The automatic transmission simplified the bike’s operation, but forced me to unlearn some 43 year old habits. There is no need to pull in the clutch when you stop. There is no clutch lever. I enjoyed my time on the retro CB1100 much more. Having owned a trio of Honda oneliter bikes, I was intrigued to see if this naked bike could seduce me. The setting was picture perfect. The bike performed admirably but it was not successful in its seduction. But it did bring me back to my first Honda rides over 40 years ago. I look forward to bringing you more detailed reports on these and other 2016 vehicles.

Strategies For Proper Pruning

energy from the plant. When the mercury drops at night, the plant can suffer.

As the leaves fall off the trees and greenery thins out for the season, exposing branches and undergrowth along the way, homeowners may be tempted to prune their trees and shrubs. But while autumn pruning may seem like a good idea, many gardening experts say it is often best for homeowners to wait until winter or early spring before pruning.

If you must spend time in the yard in the fall, tend to the leaves and debris that have already fallen to the ground rather than focusing energy on fall pruning. If you have been diligent during the spring and summer, your shrubs and other plants likely won't need pruning at this time of year.

Although pruning does thin out branches and tame spent blooms, which can be eyesores, pruning also stimulates new growth. Pruning in the autumn, when plants are naturally preparing to go dormant, can weaken the plants considerably. This can compromise their chances of surviving into the next growing season. Fall temperatures also can be deceiving. While it may be warm during the day when the sun is shining, temperatures can quickly drop overnight. Pruning during the warmth of day, when the sap has risen in the plants, may deplete

Wait until winter before taking out the shears. At this point, the woody parts of many plants are dormant and will not be harmed or primed to grow by the pruning. Chances are you won't prune too much as well, as chilly temperatures will keep you from spending too much time outdoors. When it's time to prune, consider these other pointers. • Keep tools clean and in good working order. You risk injury if your tools are dull and in poor shape overall. Spend time sharpening pruners and keep manual tools oiled

and clean. Debris can lodge itself in clippers, making it more difficult to open and shut them. Wash and dry tools after use, especially when dealing with diseased plants. Otherwise you risk spreading disease to healthy plants. • Cut back stems completely. It's usually a good idea to prune branches back to the main stem. Leaving a portion sticking out can catch on people or animals and produce a gathering spot for bacteria and insects. Take out thinner, smaller shoots first before

• Prune dry branches. Do not prune when plants are wet. Pruning damp plants encourages the growth of microbes that can infiltrate the plant. This is not as significant a problem in the winter, when microbes have already been killed. • Ask an expert. If you are unsure of how and when to prune particular plants, consult with an expert at a nursery or wherever you buy your plants.

Early vampires were described as bloated and ruddy in appearance from gorging on blood. This literary character was created by author Bram Stoker and was inspired by Vlad III, a prince of the House of Dracula in an area that is now known as Romania. Community Cat

Puma

Hello! My name is Puma and I have been at the shelter for close to two years now. I look a little rough around the edges and am getting a bit grumpy, because I miss having a place of my own, but I am quite lovable... when I want to be. I do not like dogs at all and would love to be the only cat, so I can get all the attention, but if you have another older calm cat, we might be buddies. The shelter people tested me for something called FIV and I tested positive. I am not sure what this is, so it is best if you talk to them about it, if you have any questions. I am about 10 years old and would be perfect for someone who is looking for a cat-friend who likes to chill in a seat by the window and snooze a lot! I really am a good boy, would you give me a chance? The CCC is in need of volunteers for both morning and afternoon shifts, 7 days a week. We are also in need of supplies, especially litter (World’s Best/Scoop Away), dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Any help is very much appreciated! We are located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster and are open Wednesday through Saturday 12pm-5pm. You can see more of our adoptable cats on Petfinder and Adopt-a-pet and we would love it if you would follow us and share our kitties on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com /pages/Community-Cat Connection/183756251774389! Please email us at info@ccatconnect.org for any questions!

That’s where a simple but vital electrical device can come in. Once installed, the Leeo Smart Alert— which doubles as a sleek, modern LED night-light and comes in a variety of colors—continuously listens for your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If they sound, the Leeo Smart Alert immediately calls and texts you so you can take quick action to protect your pets and your home.

(NAPSI)—According to the American Kennel Club, some half a million pets are affected by house fires each year—but there are steps you can take so yours aren’t among them.

• Keep cooking areas clear of combustibles and wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when you cook.

The Problem Pets are often kept inside the house while their people are away. Unfortunately, if a fire starts or there’s a gas leak and the smoke alarm sounds, pets are trapped as they can’t call for help.

Trendy Exercises to Rev Up Workouts

Exercising consistently is a great way to get healthy. For those who find their workout routines monotonous, switching up exercises and embracing some of the newer, trendier fitness regimens may be a way to maintain your momentum at the gym. High-intensity workouts High-intensity interval training, or HIIT, is a concept behind some of today’s most popular exercise programs. HIIT combines cardiovascular and strengthtraining movements into a concentrated workout designed to keep your heart rate elevated. HIIT workouts blend bouts of intense exercise with either rest or lowintensity activity. These workouts seem to promote faster weight loss than prolonged workouts at moderate paces. While HIIT is functional, it is not

best for those who have preexisting orthopedic injuries or serious cardiovascular conditions. But many people enjoy a stronger heart and improved muscle tone from HIIT workouts. Kettlebells These weighted cast-iron workout tools can be an interesting addition to strength-training workouts. But their utility does not stop there. Using kettlebells during any physical activity will increase the amount of fat burned and can provide a full-body workout. Kettlebells come in different weights, and newcomers are urged to start out gradually and build up in weight as they become more familiar and toned.

Trampoline cardio For those who want to both shake up their workouts and lift their moods, jumping on a trampoline can do just that. It’s difficult to be in a bad mood when bouncing around like a kid on a trampoline.

Freckles Are A Common Skin Condition

Whether it's a light smattering of spots over the bridge of a person's nose or tiny spots covering his or her arms and legs, freckles are a reality for thousands of people. Despite their prevalence, many people are unsure just why freckles form or who is most likely to have them on their bodies.

There are two basic forms of freckles. These include simple freckles and sunburn freckles. Both are made more prominent by exposure to the sun. Simple freckles are usually small, tan and round. People with freckles tend to burn more easily and need to rely on sunscreen and covering their skin to prevent damage. When freckles are present, they may fade when the skin gets less exposure to the sun. But some freckles will remain. Those who are embarrassed by freckles can be diligent about covering up in the sun. There are various topical creams that can bleach freckles and lighten them over time. There also are dermatological laser treatments to lighten or eliminate freckles.

Freckles are a skin condition primarly for those of light skin who are exposed to sunlight. They are largely hereditary and rarely harmful. Those who have concerns about the appearance of freckles can visit a dermatologist to discuss their options.
