• Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which to avoid. Nutrition is not always foremost on the minds of college freshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food.

• Emphasize time management. Today’s high schoolers are busier than ever before, so many may already be prepared for the juggling act that is college life. But college students have more free time than their high school counterparts, so parents can emphasize the importance of managing that free time wisely as opposed to spending it lounging on the couch or napping. The transition from high school to college can be both exciting and difficult. But parents can get a head start on that transition by encouraging their youngsters to be more independent during their final year of high school.

8 Ways to Bring Big Style to Small Spaces

(Family Features) As college students prepare to move into dorm rooms and apartments, they trim their packing lists and often sacrifice style due to space restraints. Although it may seem difficult to bring big style into tight quarters, there are several small things you can do to bring your personality to life on move-in day. "Dorm rooms can sometimes feel drab and uninspiring, but just because they're temporary doesn't mean they have to look like it," said Tyler Wisler, interior design expert from Tyler Wisler Home and HGTV's "Design Star." "With the right tools and creative design elements, you can transform your home away from home into a space worth staying." Wisler recommends these simple tips to turn that bland box into something spectacular: 1. Color your world. Incorporate colorful throw pillows and blankets

Creative Ways To Recycle Leaves Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and aweinspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall. The following are some creative ways to recycle leaves that fall from your trees in the weeks to come. • Mulch: Shredded leaves can make for a great amendment to fertilizer for garden beds and even the lawn. Leaves lying on the grass can be mulched into small pieces with a mulching mower so they don’t choke the blades of grass. Leaves also can be broken down

with a string trimmer, a leaf blower that has a vacuum function or a commercial shredder/chipper. Add the shredded leaves to a compost pile or use them to fill container plants before adding regular potting soil. • Insulation: Collect leaves to mound over delicate perennial plants and shrubs. The leaves will add more warmth to the soil and may help plants make it through harsh winters. Just remove the leaves slowly when spring arrives so that the soil underneath can get the sunlight and water it needs to thrive. Leave some leaves in the yard so that animals can use them as nesting material and line their dens for the winter. • Stuffing: Create whimsical scarecrows as part of your autumn decoration scheme. Gather older clothes that you no longer use and stuff the sleeves of shirts and the legs of pants with leaves, which are less expensive and easier to come by than straw. Use a few pieces of straw around the neck and hand areas of the scarecrow for visual effect. Tie off with twine and

display your scarecrow. • Bedding: Chicken owners can use fallen leaves as bedding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you further rake and compost the leaves. • Decorations: Natural leaves can be used as decorations both inside and outside a home. String freshly fallen leaves together and wrap them around a grapevine wreath for a rustic door decoration. Leaves can be placed in clear vases and

13

put on display for a cheap way to showcase some autumn color. Preserve favorite leaves with a lamination machine or by sealing them between heated sheets of waxed paper. Cut out the leaf shapes and use for hanging window decorations. • Recreation: Leaves have long been favorite toys for children, who eagerly await jumping into large piles of fallen leaves. Fill paper bags with leaves and draw a target on the front. Let kids test their skill aiming for the targets. Children can camouflage their clothing with leaves and masking tape and have a more intense session of “hide and seek.”

the risk that the trees will cause damage to their properties. The following are just some of the ways homeowners can determine if their trees are unhealthy. Homeowners who suspect they have a tree that poses a safety risk should contact a professional tree service for an immediate inspection and steer clear of the tree until an inspection has been performed.

Perhaps because they can live for so many years, trees have a way of falling down homeowners’ landscaping priority lists. If the soil is cracked or raised because it is uprooting, then the tree might have already started to lean in the opposite direction of the cracking or raised soil. • Examine for fungus. The growth of fungus on the tree trunk or close to it may be a sign that the tree is rotting or decaying. Fungal growth, such as a sudden population of mushrooms, around the base of the tree is another sign of decay. Watch Your Back: Leaf and Snow Removal Tips

(Family Features) Some people loathe the task of raking leaves and removing snow in the fall and winter months, with perfectly good reason. A bad back, or the fear of throwing out a perfectly good one, can be a hindrance when it comes to keeping up with your yard and driveway. Fortunately, there are numerous alternatives to help keep your pastures green and concrete jungle clear. Ergonomic options Recognizing the strain that the repetitive motion of raking or shoveling can put on the body, manufacturers have designed a wide range of ergonomic shovels and rakes that are less taxing on muscles and joints. Test-drive your options for a comfortable fit; look for a secure grip and a height that is comfortable (although bear in mind that the longer the handle, the more energy you’ll need to put into hefting a load of snow).

Home & GArden

Put some power to it There is no gold medal for completing all your yard work by hand, especially if doing so results in days of pain. There are an array of leaf and snow blowers available to give you a hand with the chores. With electric and gas models, and a wide range of power to handle jobs big and small, you can save your energy for another item on your to-do list. Similarly, many riding lawnmowers offer the versatility to tackle projects like mulching, or even snow removal with the proper attachments, while atop a comfortable seat. Mulching made easy If raking and bagging leaves puts too much strain on your back, mulching with your mower is an ideal alternative. Models such as the John Deere Z235 EZtrak zero-turn radius mower allow you to easily switch from side discharge or bagging to mulching mode with a mulching kit attachment. Be sure to mulch leaves only when they are dry, as mulching wet or damp leaves can cause build up or clumping under the deck. Grass needs sunlight in the fall to

How to Insulate Your Home Against a Deadly Fire (MS) — As fire prevention awareness efforts gear up across North America, the National Fire Protection Association and insulation company, Roxul Inc., are spreading the word to Americans from coast to coast about the importance of fire preparedness. Through the “Hear the BEEP where you SLEEP” campaign and Roxul’s “When Seconds Count” initiative, Americans are reminded that simple steps can cut their chances of dying in a fire in half. Here are some measures you can take to dramatically reduce your risk: • Be sure to have a smoke alarm on every story of your home and outside sleeping areas.

Home & GArden

Smart Shopper

• Use non-combustible materials when renovating. The choice of insulation can make a big difference. Opt for a product with the highest fire resistance possible, like Roxul mineral wool insulation, which, in the event of a fire, will not produce harmful gases, toxic smoke or promote the spread of flames. • Purchase a multi-use fire ladder for each bedroom in your home and practise using it. • Place fire extinguishers within reach throughout your home. • In the event of a fire, leave through the closest exit. Do not stop to collect belongings and never reenter a home once safely outside. Additional fire safety tips are available at nfpa.org. You can also improve your fire safety knowledge, with a contest incentive, by visiting roxul.com.

• Develop a fire escape plan and practice it.

Eight Ways To Increase The Value Of Your Home (NAPSI)—Making your home more attractive to prospective buyers can be easier and less expensive than many realize—if you heed these eight suggestions from the real estate listings experts at Trulia: 1. Tips For Choosing a Major Choosing a major is an important decision for college students. The right major can set students on a path to a rewarding and successful career, which can lead to a more fulfilling life. The gravity of such a decision is one reason many college students delay choosing their majors until after they enter college. Students often find entering college as an undecided affords them the opportunity to explore various courses of study without committing themselves to any particular subject. Though that approach can work while students are still underclassmen, many advisors recommend students choose a major before their third year of college. The following tips can help students ensure they make the right decision about which path to take for the remainder of their college careers.

September 16, 2015

• Visit your school’s career center. College career centers are a great resource for college students as they narrow down their options concerning a major. Many career centers have programs in place designed to match students’ interests and personalities with courses of study. Utilize these programs if you are having trouble matching an interest with a major. • Take action. Classrooms can be great places to discover a passion for a particular field of study, but lectures or entry-level courses are not always enough to spark interest. If there are particular fields of study that interest you, find extracurricular clubs that are associated with those majors. Such clubs may host speakers or seminars that can give you greater insight into the field than you might glean from the classroom. Attend such events when possible, and bring any questions you might have about the course of study they are associated with.

• Speak to upperclassmen. Underclassmen may make up the majority of students in entry-level courses, but you may encounter some upperclassmen who have already chosen their majors in such classes from time to time. Such students can be valuable resources for other students looking to gain greater insight into courses of study. Ask about particular classes and professors who upperclassmen found particularly engaging and encouraging. • Pursue an internship. The handson experience provided by an internship is a great way for students to learn if a particular line of work is for them. Internships can provide an insider’s look into particular professions and industries. While internships might once have been

BMW’s M235i Emphasizes the Company’s Core Values Some BMW purists insist that the 1973 BMW 2002 tii was By Mike the perfect BMW, and every Covello model should be just as good as that classic sport sedan. Wait, classic is too weak of a descriptor. Some folks say that the BMW 1600/2002 represented the invention of the sport sedan. My week spent in a Glacier Silver Metallic 2015 BMW M235i xDrive Coupe was a glorious time reliving just how much fun driving can be. It wasn’t till I sat down to write this did I realize how complicated it would be explain to you, faithful reader, the origin of this vehicle’s name. This car used to be called a 1 Series, but then they decided that two-door BMWs needed an even number, so it became a “2.” Next up is the “M” designation. This car does not get put in the section of BMW’s website devoted to M models, such as the M3, M4, M5…well you get the picture. Instead it gets an “M Performance” tag. You can get into a BMW 2-Series coupe for $32,850 for a 228i. This buys you a hi-output 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine equipped with two turbochargers. While 240-hp and 255 lb-ft of torque are not enormous numbers, bear in mind this is from only 122 cubic inches of motor. My tester had the highly-refined BMW 3.0-liter in-line six cylinder engine, also boosted with twin turbos. Telling you that it makes 326-hp and 332 lb-ft of torque doesn’t begin to describe this engine. The combination of silky smoothness, instant torque and a snarl at redline typify the glory of this powerplant. Some folks might complain that my tester’s eightspeed automatic transmission diluted the car’s purity. While I like a good six-speed manual transmission as much as the next enthusiast, I was very happy using the well placed paddle shifters. Then there was the car’s ability to change the shift program maps according to my driving style, or my choice of the four Driving Dynamic Control (DDC) setting.

The first DDC setting is Eco Pro. This is the one I experienced the least. The slower throttle response seemed almost a sacrilegious way to treat this great engine. Comfort was the default setting and how I spent most of my time driving the M, I mean the 2. But Sport and Sport Plus are where the M235i likes to live. These defeat the idle-stop feature and besides eliciting faster gear changes, they also tighten up the suspension and, sharpen the throttle response. In Sport Plus, the car’s handling is enhanced by Dynamic Traction control with Cornering Brake Control. Long story shorter, you can transform your M235i from a pleasant car for cruising, to a nearly-track ready pleasure machine. A Motoring Decisively tool if you will.

The exterior has enough curves, creases and details to be appealing, without being too fussy. The interior continues BMW’s tradition of offering a comfortable business cockpit for those who take driving seriously. While the rear wheel drive M235i gets to 60-mph in 4.6 seconds, the XDrive, like my The M235i can easily be used as an everyday car. But, 30s, my tester had a base sticker of $44,900, and was optioned for the performance the M235i has to offer, it is very reasonable out to $52,325. Some folks will say that is a reasonable price to mileage. There is even an idle-stop feature that you can easily pay to have a small and nimble sport sedan capable of carrying defeat if getting maximum fuel economy from your BMW isn’t four in a pinch. Connection

Inky

Hello! My name is Inky and I first came to the CCC in the spring of 2014, when I was an older kitten. Pretty soon I was adopted and I thought I had found my forever home! I was so happy and loved my new family. Then, after about a year, I started having an upset tummy and digestive issues and my family returned me to the shelter. I spent some time at the vet's office and am better now, but I do need a special diet to keep my system working well. The stress at the shelter and the vet office are not good for my health, so I am so hoping someone will fall in love with my handsome face and shiny fur and take me home and love me for the rest of my life! If I do say so myself, I am a fun and sweet male cat and I will be a wonderful companion. So please come and meet me and soon I can curl up next to you on your couch or bed. The CCC is also in need of volunteers for all shifts. We have morning shifts, and afternoon/evening shifts 7 days a week. Please visit our website or call our Volunteer Coordinator Linda at (508)949-0779 for more information. We are also in need of supplies, such as paper towels, wet and dry cat and kitten food, trash bags, HE laundry detergent, dryer sheets and Clorox wipes. Any donations are greatly appreciated. They can be dropped off at the shelter when we are open.

The CCC is located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster. We are now open Wednesday through Sunday 12 - 5. Or you can make an appointment. We can be reached at (508) 949-0779.
