THE GLASS MENAGERIE, 2018

“Great theatre is about challenging how we think and encouraging us to fantasize about a world we aspire to.”  —WILLEM DAFOE

Welcome to the 2019-2020 Season! From the 27 extraordinary young actors bringing The Little Mermaid JR. to life on our intimate stage, to the 8 amazing actors who will embody the diverse population of Laramie, Wyoming, to the rocking live band backing Patsy Cline, our third season as SLO REP – the only nonprofit, professional theatre in SLO County – has something for absolutely everyone! The Board and staff of this organization are thrilled with the evolution of our company over the last several years, and incredibly grateful for the support of our cherished patrons, donors, and volunteers. Thank you for embracing SLO REP and supporting the “return of art to life” in downtown San Luis Obispo. The backbone of live theatre – from the rehearsal room to performance – is inclusion. We are proud to bring our community together 200+ times each year to tell powerful stories which connect people in ways that open the mind, nourish the soul, and illuminate our shared humanity. Our 2019– 2020 Season was carefully chosen to provide timeless entertainment and encourage discussion about the kind of world we aspire to create. We encourage you to be the most vital aspect of that discussion. As always, thank you for your support of this organization and of live theatre in San Luis Obispo. We are so privileged to share this amazing season of shows with you. Gratefully,

Kevin Harris Managing Artistic Director

A roller-coaster comic thriller that has to be seen to be believed. A desperate writer’s devious machinations provide twists and turns and sudden shocks in such abundance that audiences will be held spellbound until the very last moment. This ingeniously constructed play offers a rare and skillful blending of two priceless theatrical ingredients: gasp-inducing thrills and spontaneous laughter. “It is a classic thriller, a genre with a style, a manner and an audience of its own. If you like thrillers, do see it. I promise you that it is vintage.”  —NY POST “Two-thirds a thriller and one-third a devilishly clever comedy… Suspend your disbelief and be delighted. Our young performers of ACT take on the challenge of “The Scottish Play” and bring this classic story to life. Returning home from battle, the victorious Macbeth meets three witches on the heath. Driven by their disturbing prophecies, he sets out on the path to murder. This script was originally developed for the Seattle Children’s Theatre Summer Season, an acclaimed program in which student actors and theatre professionals come together to produce polished plays. This edited version of MacBeth has been specifically written for students in grades 4 through 12.

Always…Patsy Cline is a delightful musical about friendship, country music and a brilliant artist who left us all too soon. More than a tribute to the legendary country singer, Always… Patsy Cline is a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death. The musical play, complete with down home country humor, poignant tales of life on the road and even some audience participation, includes many of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight — 27 songs in all! The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love ALWAYS… Patsy Cline.”

The one-person-show that isn't a one-person-show at all. You’re seven years old. Mom’s in the hospital. Dad says she’s “done something stupid.” She finds it hard to be happy. So you start to make a list of everything that’s brilliant about the world. Everything worth living for: 1. Ice cream. 2. Kung Fu movies. 3. Staying up past your bedtime and being allowed to watch TV. 4. The color yellow. You leave it on her pillow. You know she read it because she’s corrected your spelling. Soon, the list will take on a life of its own. Every Brilliant Thing brilliantly incorporates laughout-loud comedy, audience participation and soul-stirring drama. It is a play about depression and the lengths we will go to for those we love. What’s on your list? “Every Brilliant Thing may be the funniest show about depression you’ve ever seen…”  —NEW YORK POST "If you live a full life and you get to the end without ever once feeling depressed, you probably haven’t been paying attention."  —DUNCAN MACMILLAN

The true story of an average American town in the wake of a shocking murder. In October 1998, a 21-year-old student at the University of Wyoming was kidnapped, severely beaten, and left tied to a fence in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming. He died five days later. His name was Matthew Shepard. He was the victim of this assault because he was gay. Hailed as one of the most captivating and encompassing pieces of contemporary theatre, The Laramie Project challenges and moves us as it reveals the depth of hatred and the greatest heights of compassion that lie within all of us as human beings. “A pioneering work of theatrical reportage and a powerful stage event.”  —TIME MAGAZINE

About Ubu’s Other Shoe A staged reading is a form of theatre without sets or full costumes and props. The actors read from scripts, sometimes using music stands. They may be seated, stand in fixed positions, or incorporate minimal stage movement. SLO REP’s staged reading series is named after the infamous trilogy of plays written by Alfred Jarry (Ubu Roi) that were banned from the stage after riots erupted on opening night. Ubu’s Other Shoe pays homage to the spirit of Jarry and to all artists who strive to explore the fringes of their art. This exciting series exists to offer actors, directors and audience members an opportunity to experience incredible plays that do not necessarily fit into our regular main stage season. Thank you for taking this journey with us. (805) 786-2440  21

The Show Must Go On! Unforgettable Characters. Extraordinary Stories. Since 1947. Did you know that ticket sales cover only a little more than half of what you see on stage? Your donations help to bring the lights up on every intimate SLO REP performance, connecting audience and actors in a shared emotional experience, teaching us about ourselves and each other, bringing a little understanding (and a lot of fun!) to a complicated world. Your gifts are the most important piece of this amazing puzzle called live theatre.

Five ways to support SLO REP: 1

4

Host an Actor or Director in your Home.  It’s a great way to get to know some very interesting artists, AND provide valuable support for the theatre. For details, please email stagemanager@slorep.org.

5

Leave a Legacy.  Designate a gift to SLO REP in your will or estate plans to support the future of live theatre in our community for years to come. Consult your financial advisor and call us at (805) 781-3889, ext. 15 for more information.

Our Mission SLO REP strengthens theatre’s cultural influence and enriches the Central Coast by producing professional theatre, nurturing artists and providing theatre education for children and adults.

Our Belief Live theatre’s powerful storytelling connects people in ways that open the mind, nourish the soul and illuminate our shared humanity.

Parking

Children

The best place to park near the theatre is in the 842 Palm Street Parking Structure, located at the corner of Palm and Morro Streets (enter on Palm). The first hour of parking is free, $1.25 per hour thereafter. Parking is also available on the street.

In general, we do not recommend bringing children under age 5 to SLO REP, except to our Academy of Creative Theatre (ACT) performances, where their attendance is absolutely encouraged! Please note that not all programming is appropriate for all ages. Please check each show’s webpage for our ratings guide.

Note: Please allow extra time for parking on Thursday nights due to the SLO Downtown Farmers Market.

Late Seating The lobby opens one hour before show time. Our intimate space makes late seating difficult, so please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before curtain. Late seating is not guaranteed and is at the complete discretion of the house manager. Seats that remain empty at show-time may be re-assigned to other patrons. In addition, any unclaimed willcall tickets will be made available for purchase to the general public.

Food and Drink The bar is open in the lobby one hour before each performance. You are welcome to bring your drinks into the theatre with you. Please do not bring food into the theatre. We appreciate your help in keeping our theatre clean. Printing by Poor Richard's Press 26  slorep.org
