You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord.

Beat the winter blues by beating your friends at a fun game night!

With the winter weather set in, it is definitely the season to stay in and stay warm. So how do you still get in a date night without venturing out? We have the perfect solution! Host a couple’s game night! Staying in and having a fun and competitive game night with your friends at home is always a great idea. The best part is that it helps you save money too! Check out all of these ideas to help you host the perfect couples game night.

THE MORE THE MERRIER!

You can invite one other couple or you can invite several couples. They do not even have to be couples just invite the friends you enjoy spending time with. However, when you select your games, make sure that they work for the number of people you plan to host. The last thing you want to do is leave someone out.

PLACE YOUR BETS!

You can heat up the competition by adding a wager to the game so the winner at the end of the night goes home with a small fortune. If you are not willing to wager your precious laundry fund, then bet on an action like the couple with the least amount of points has to take a shot, or the loser brings the food next game night.

LET THE KIDS JOIN IN!

If you don’t want to get a babysitter for game night, bring the kids along. You can set up games for the kids in another room while you

play your adult games. Your friends with kids will appreciate the opportunity to have a fun outing that doesn’t require a sitter.

CLASSIC GAMES

Remember that you don’t have a ton of hours for long games like Monopoly, but there are still plenty of classic board games from your childhood to enjoy. How about the game Clue, Sorry or Scrabble? You will be surprised how much fun you have playing these old-time favorites.

FIND NEW GAMES

It is always fun to try something new. Sometimes the are a flop but sometimes you end up finding a game that becomes your new favorite. Have each couple bring a new game to try out with the group.

GET A LITTLE RACY

This is for close friends and no kids allowed because it can get a little racy and not child appropriate. Try out a PG-13 game like Cards Against Humanity or What Do You Meme and have some adult fun!

When you grow tired of the same old date nights and are ready for something different, try having a couples date night. There are so many fun games that can be played with friends over food and drinks. A few good laughs with friends is a great way to beat those winter blues while beating your friends at your epic game night! n

EMPOWERING YOU TO BE!

EmBe

Empowering women and families to enrich lives and strengthen communities

Designed to support families through empowering women and providing services that enable children and youth to thrive; EmBe reaches across South Dakota to directly impact more than 13,000 individuals every year. Formerly the YWCA, EmBe’s services are made possible by staff who are assisted by generous volunteers who donate an incredible 24,000 hours every year.

According to Karen Lundquist, CEO of EmBe notes, “From four-week old babies that we rock to sleep to 90 year olds taking advantage of early-morning swimming sessions, EmBe’s doors are open to everyone. We offer free programs, adjust fees based on income, and offer scholarships to ensure that finances are not a barrier to growth. It’s important to know that EmBe reaches across economic and demographic boundaries, offering three service areas: women’s programming, youth development and child care. We offer 42 programs to thousands of people annually and we carefully steward the resources we are entrusted with, and we take our mission to help people change their lives very seriously.”

Today, EmBe’s programming includes:

• Childcare and School Age Care

• Youth Development

• Women’s Leadership and Dress for Success programming

Karen shares, “We describe our programs as a circle of empowerment, providing support and equipping people with life skills no matter their age or stage. With our foundation in the YWCA, we continue to operate from a woman’s perspective.”

But as wonderful as the programming is, the stories of success are what stand out for Karen and demonstrate how much of an impact they truly make. “In the Girls on the Run program, one of our coaches demonstrated just how important applying lessons of resilience can be. As they filled out their lap goal cards, one girl wrote “I hate myself,” which led to a conversation about a really tough day. From there, they applied “star power” which is one of the great lessons the program imparts. The session ended in positivity, with the coach –and the girl – filled with accomplishment and a sense of purpose.”

She continues, “Our staff had visited the women’s prison in Pierre in response to a request from a woman who was soon to be released. She contacted us on a Friday, and by Monday had set up interviews, had a suiting, and landed a job by midweek. Not typical, but not atypical either! The combination of a hand up at the right time and her determination built incredible momentum!”

EmBe has three locations in Sioux Falls and another location in Mitchell. To learn more about EmBe and the programs that are offered, visitembe.org or call (605) 362-9438. n

PRESENTATION PEOPLE

Presentation People is a term coined by the Presentation Sisters to be inclusive of everyone who desires to follow the mission of Nano Nagle – and ultimately, the mission of Jesus. It includes sisters, cojourners, employees, and other friends sharing the mission through advocacy, ministry, charity, prayer, or hospitality. Nano dreamed of being in service in all parts of the world. Today, this dream continues to flourish as more people connect and journey as one. By connecting with each other, sharing a similar energy, and working together, the community comes together to make a big difference on seemingly daunting tasks. We sat down with Presentation People who voiced

what it means to share and express Nano’s mission together.

“Presentation People are a main reason Nano’s mission is growing stronger today. I have been part of this movement for many years and have learned and seen up close the importance of Nano’s foundation from teaching, healing, caring, and helping others in need for all people.”

“Nano was such a brave woman. Despite the penal codes of her time and sometimes her own fears she never said ‘no’ to a calling to help

advertorial
We are stronger in mission when we are sharing that mission.

the marginalized. I think of her whenever I feel I am being called to do something outside of my comfort zone. I call upon her and the Lord to help me discern the call. Walking with other Presentation People, where we are called, gives me strength knowing we can do more together.”

“It was written that Nano’s family motto was ‘Not Words, but Deeds.’ I believe that as Presentation People, we continue to live out these words as we work with and for one another. It is opening our eyes to see those that may be hurting and stepping out with our hearts and hands to help those in need.”

“Being able to connect with other Presentation People who know of all the amazing work Nano did is a blessing. We may be located all over the globe but we can share ideas and inspire each other to go out and continue the mission of Nano.”

“Presentation People joyfully incarnate the compassion and justice of Jesus in the way that Nano did, with the purpose to bring hope into our world for our neighbors, locally and globally. We are stronger in mission if we are sharing that mission.”

To learn more about Presentation People or to get involved, please call (605) 271-0468 for further conversation, or visit presentationsisters.org.

Protect Your

Skin and lips are commonly dry during the artic winter months. Here are some ways to keep your lips from cracking and chapping.

STOP LICKING YOUR LIPS!

Licking your lips constantly dries them out. It wears your skin out causes them to be sore.

ALL LIPS MATTER

What may work for others may not be right for you. If you suffer from severe dry lips, choosing a medicated lip ointment would be appropriate. If you have seasonal dryness, a less aggressive formula-like lip balm or ChapStick® would be perfect for daily use.

SCRUB-A-DUB-DUB

Routinely exfoliating your dry, flaking lips does away with most of the dry skin and restores moisture. The skin on your lips is thin, so choose a gentle lip scrub you can use twice a week.

TREAT WHILE YOU SLEEP

Keeping your lips healthy isn’t just a day job. Treating your lips while you sleep reduces lips fine lines, soothes and protects. One less thing to worry about when you wake up .

MASK WHILE YOU’RE AWAKE

Sometimes your lips are just having a moment and you need an emergency solution from that matte lipstick you wore all week. A peel off lip mask is jam packed with hydration, infusing your lips and the skin around it with the vitamins and minerals it needs.

Remember, you cover your hands and feet when the temperature drops, you also need to protect your pretty pout in these cold winter months. n

Because life doesn’t have to be so hard.

It’s time to get unstuck. You deserve to enjoy your life. Offering individual counseling for women ready to get more out of life. Call or text 605-254-3889 to schedule an appointment. Now offering Telehealth appointments statewide.

Getting Cozy

&Chic

It may be cold outside, but that doesn’t mean your style has to be. Try these hot trends for sweaters and layering!

OVERSIZED SWEATERS

Oversized sweaters are stylish, comfortable, and can be worn with your favorite leggings or jeans. You can also easily wear this over a collared shirt for a more sophisticated look.

HIGH TURTLENECK SWEATERS

Stay warm and cozy with this kind of sweater. Layer it with a blazer, leather jacket, or peacoat to dress it up. Choose a thinner sweater to make layering easier.

CHUNKY SWEATERS

This style comes in so many different designs and adds texture to your outfit. Wear with simple jewelry to keep the focus on the sweater.

ACCESSORIES

Skinny jeans, booties, flats, and scarves will all compliment your sweater well.

No matter the temperature or how much snow may fall, you will stay warm and stylish all season long! n

Holiday Superfoods

Even though the holidays are an easy time to overindulge, you can still eat well every day. In fact, some of the most popular fall and winter foods are considered superfoods. A superfood is defined as a nutrient-rich food that’s especially beneficial for health and well-being. Now that the holidays are here, there’s no need to completely revamp your diet, instead you can choose some of nature’s all-stars at each meal and naturally boost your health! I’ve listed a few of my top holiday superfoods for you to try this holiday season!

NUTS AND SEEDS

An easy and convenient superfood, nuts and seeds are one of the healthiest snacks, from almonds, pecans and pistachios to chia seeds, flaxseed and pumpkin seeds, these small but mighty nuts and seeds are nutritional powerhouses. You’ll get a hearty dose of protein and healthy omega-3 fats that will satisfy you and give you a nutritional boost. It’s a bonus that at most holiday parties, you can typically find a bowl of nuts and seeds. So go ahead and grab a serving; in addition to the protein and fats, you’ll get a healthy dose of fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

ANCIENT GRAINS

There’s something so comforting about cold days and warm grain bowls, but it’s time to think outside the box of rice or bowl of oatmeal. Quinoa is an amazingly nutritious wholesome grain (ok, it’s technically a seed) but most people think of it like a grain and this one packs a nutritional punch, as a complete protein.Try ancient grains like farro instead of pasta or teff and millet instead of rice as substitutions on your holiday menus. These will be welcomed new additions. Packing more nutrition per bite, filled with flavor and fiber, you’ll quickly discover the super powers of these super grains!

CRANBERRIES AND APPLES

When thinking of Holiday fruits, these two seem to come to mind, but typically in a sugar filled dessert. However, these two superfoods should find a place in your meals, sans sugar. Cranberries and apples are both high in fiber and offer a healthy dose of vitamin C, phytonutrients and are filled with antioxidants that offer you an abundance of health benefits. Remember to consume the whole fruit form (not dried) for the greatest (and healthiest) benefit.

ROOT VEGETABLES AND SQUASH

Eating vegetables in season is something our bodies crave and root vegetables are comforting superfoods. Potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, parsnips, rutabagas, you name it, they all have a place. Hearty, nutrition powerhouses, choose a variety and leave the skins on potatoes for added vitamins (vitamin c and a as well as potassium) and you’ll also get a plethora of minerals and fiber. The options and combinations of root vegetables are endless, so embrace the cold holiday season with an assortment your body will appreciate! If you’re watching your starches, try one of the many varieties of squash. Squash is one of my favorites and is extremely versatile. If it isn’t a go-to of yours yet, it soon will be. This superfood benefits the body by helping lower inflammation, aiding in blood sugar regulation and adding a healthy dose of vitamins A and C as well as antioxidants, that your body will love. Any of these superfoods make for a super choice this holiday season! n

Simply Sophisticated Entertaining

Easy presentation tips that will wow your guests

Story, styling and photos by Lisa Blair

With the holidays right around the corner, charcuterie boards are an easy and delicious way to treat your guests to a variety of yummy food options. Traci Hoem, Manager of Plum’s Cooking Company in Sioux Falls, says “Charcuterie boards are a combination of different types of dry cured meats, cheeses, fruit compotes, crackers and other small bites. For serving boards you can get extremely creative and use just about anything. And you can do just about any type of food theme. Be it sweet, savory or both. A Charcuterie board is your chance to be creative.”

First and foremost, I decided which food themes I wanted to create for this holiday season and then I pulled out all my food safe serving platters and mini serving bowls. I then decided which platter would work best for the snack, dessert and sandwich charcuterie boards I was about to assemble. Be prepared to use parchment paper if the serving platter is not food safe.

When purchasing your food for each charcuterie board, keep all your guests in mind. My dessert theme includes healthy options like raspberries for those on keto and certified gluten-free and soy-free protein bites for those with gluten and soy allergies. I made sure to include my family’s favorite macaroons and pretty much every little kid’s favorite, chocolate chip cookies. Finish off with a variety of other treats to appeal to all your guests. I placed the desserts on the two-tiered slate stand in an eyepleasing way and used small dishes for the treats that would otherwise roll off.

For the snack charcuterie board, I went with the largest board possible because of the huge variety of snacks I was wanting to put on it. I placed the smoked meats, crackers, cheeses and bowls around the perimeter of the board to hold in the grapes, cashews and pistachios. Rosemary sprigs are a beautiful way to dress up the board and to also guard the foods that might roll off. One of the reasons I went with red cherry tomatoes, green olives and sliced cucumbers was to incorporate the red and green holiday colors onto the board.

The sandwich theme charcuterie board I kept very simple using a mini bread loaf, smoked meat, pepper jack cheese, pickles, cherry tomatoes and jalapeno jam. Be sure to include the appropriate cocktail picks and have serving utensils handy for your guests. Appetite appeal begins with your eyes so when creating your board look for ingredients that pop like the red tomatoes. Red berry, pine spray picks and simple holiday décor will add the finishing touch that will wow your holiday guests. n

Holiday

All ingredients for these recipes are available at The Co-Op Natural Foods.

Sweet Potato Gratin

• 5 lbs sweet potato

• 1 cup heavy cream

• 4 bay leaves

• 1 vanilla bean

• ¹/³ cup + 1 tablespoon brown sugar, divided

• 1 tsp kosher salt

• ¾ tsp black pepper

• ¹/³ cup cane sugar

• Pinch cayenne

Recipes

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pierce potatoes with fork and arrange on a rimmed baking sheet. Bake on middle rack until soft, turning once, about 1 to 1½ hours. Let cool. Turn oven to 425 degrees.

2. Meanwhile in small saucepan combine the cream and bay leaves. Split the vanilla bean lengthwise. Use the back of the knife to scrape out the seeds. Add vanilla seeds and pod to cream. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, cover, let rest 30 minutes. Strain out solids.

3. Once the potatoes have cooled scrape the flesh from the skins. Discard skins. Add potatoes to food processer. Add the 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and the cream, process until smooth, about one minute. Transfer to 13x9 baking dish and smooth out the top.

4. In a bowl stir together the remaining 1/3c brown sugar, white sugar, and cayenne. Sprinkle over top of sweet potatoes. Wipe clean the edge of the baking dish.

5. Bake on middle rack until bubbling, about 20 minutes. Remove from oven, heat the broiler. When ready place the dish on upper rack and roast until deeply golden, 2-7 minutes. Let cool 20 minutes before serving.

Recipes

Herbed Dressing

• 1 cup finely chopped celery

• 1 stick butter, melted

• 1 medium red onion, peeled

• ¹/³ cup fresh sage leaves

• 2 tablespoons thyme leaves

• 1½ teaspoon kosher salt

• 1 teaspoon black pepper

• 1½ lbs white sandwich bread, cut into ¾ in cubes

• 3 cups chicken stock

• ½ cups heavy cream

• ½ cups chopped parsley

1. Heat oven to 325 degrees. In small bowl toss celery with 1 tablespoon of butter; set aside. In food processer, combine onion, sage, thyme, salt, pepper, and remaining butter. Process to form a paste, about 30 seconds.

2. In large bowl, combine the onion/herb paste with bread, toss gently. Fold in the celery, then divide mixture between two rimmed baking sheets. Bake until celery is tender and the bread is crisp, 30-45 minutes, stirring the bread as needed. Let cool slightly.

3. Increase oven to 425 degrees. Transfer bread mixture to large bowl. Fold in broth and cream, let sit 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Transfer to 13x9in baking dish and spread evenly. Bake until browned on top, 30-45 minutes rotating halfway through. Let sit 20 minutes before serving. n

SOUTH DAKOTA GROWN • POPPING WITH PRIDE

The New Year sounds easy—a fresh start, time to turn your life into what you want it to be, the world is your oyster, and so on. From the time we’re in elementary school we learn about taking the new start around the sun as an opportunity to create these things known as “resolutions,” a self-promise to start doing something or to stop doing something, but very few people are able to take these resolutions in stride and implement them for more than a month or two. Inevitably, we fall back into our old habits and by the time December rolls around, we’re back where we started. So, what do we need to do in order to create a budget for the new year, a resolution for monetary responsibility, and stick to it?

Firstly, don’t try to fix every problem at once. Take time to sit down and assess your situation financially—what do you do the most that you could improve upon? What will work versus what won’t work for you? Perhaps you go to see a movie once or twice a month: you could try to take that out of your budget, but if it’s such a minimal task and it’s used for some entertainment, perhaps that’s not what you want to start with. Maybe, instead, you notice the coffee you get three times a week is adding up quicker than those movies, and note that cutting that back to once a week will overall save you more money than your once or twice a month entertainment. Take only a handful of things in your spending habits and set those aside as definitives, things you know, if changed, will make a difference in your monthly budget.

Setting a New Year’s Budget that sticks & saves

Secondly, don’t set unrealistic standards. It may be tempting to remove aspects of entertainment, as those are the most expendable items in your budget (and your emergency fund is set aside for a reason), but don’t completely deprive yourself. Only set a couple of hard, realistic goals for yourself. You’re more likely to stick with telling yourself to set aside fifty dollars each week, feeling much better when you stuff those dollar bills into your piggy bank each Friday than you would by telling yourself to “save money.”

Finally, hold yourself accountable, but don’t beat yourself up over slip-ups. That coffee you get each week, maybe you’re having a bad day and you get your second one for a week—that’s okay! Depending on how you prefer to function, you may cut out getting coffee before work entirely the next week, or you may just tell yourself to try again next month, and write it off as a little extra luxury for an outstanding circumstance. The kinder you are to yourself about your budget, the more pride you’ll take in your accomplishments.

By setting aside a few realistic changes and reminding yourself of your budget goals, you’ll be far more likely to follow your New Year’s budget through the entirety of the year and become more confident in your abilities to continue to budget for New Years to come! n

Consolidation Loans

When and how they make cents

At one time or another, most people have the desire to improve their financial situation. For those with multiple debts, a consolidation loan has the potential to combine their accounts into one new loan. According to Trisha Viss, business banker for Dacotah Bank, there are a variety of loan consolidation options. “Common consolidation loans include refinancing debt into a home equity loan or similar secured financing, and consolidating business debts into one new loan.” She also says that student loan consolidations are a

Consolidation loans may appeal to borrowers for different reasons. In some cases, the borrower wishes to simplify their monthly bill paying process into making one payment to one lender versus multiple payments to multiple creditors.

vice president of First Dakota National Bank says, “People often become bewildered by making numerous monthly payments.” Other borrowers are attracted to the potential of a lower interest rate and saving more over the life of the loan, which Fosheim supports as she says, “Once the interest rate is lowered, it is amazing how quickly debt can be repaid.” In addition to a simplified bill paying process and lowered interest rate, borrowers in need of more cash on a monthly basis might find a reduced debt payment to be extremely helpful.

In some cases, borrowers with credit card debt see an added benefit from consolidating their debt, as Dacotah Bank senior mortgage banker Donna Larson says, “Consolidation and paying off higher interest rate credit cards that are at the high limit as reported on your credit report can also improve your credit score.” She reminds borrowers who intend to use the equity in their home for the consolidation or home equity loan that they must have sufficient equity in the home in order to pledge it as collateral for the loan.

While both Viss and Larson have seen customers greatly benefit from loan consolidation, they also advise borrowers to take the time to fully understand the total costs involved with potential loans. Viss says, “It is important to consider any fees, such as the cost of an appraisal, which you may incur as a result of the consolidation. Your lender should provide a good idea of the costs upfront.” In some cases, borrowers decide that the fees would eat too much of the savings they would realize with the new loan and revisit their other options for repayment.

If a person is interested in a consolidation loan, Viss and Larson recommend discussing their options with a lender at his or her bank. A loan officer will review tax returns, salary information, current monthly obligations and financial statements or loan application to determine what solutions are available for their personal needs. In cases where a consolidation loan is not immediately an option, Viss says, “Your banker will be able to provide some guidance on how to get to a place where they may be able to help in the future.” n

How a local bank is supporting the gently used clothing business

Buying gently used clothing is gaining momentum as shoppers have grown more budget conscious and concerned about the environmental impact of throwing away clothing.

Laurie Barse, owner of Try it Again, a consignment store carrying quality name brand used clothing for men and women, has been in the consignment business for over 24 years. She has seen the attitude towards buying gently used clothing change. “When I was growing up, buying used meant that you couldn’t afford new clothes. Now, it’s viewed as a smart consumer making an intelligent and sustainable choice.” With the surge in online Fashion Bloggers, customers want to change out their inventory more often, Laurie Barse said, “By shopping at Try it Again, people can create their unique style or bring in pictures they like on social media and recreate the look for a fraction of the cost.”

In her 24 years in business, Laurie has developed a following at Try it Again. She has worked hard to build those relationships with her customers by providing quality service. When she was looking for a bank to support her business, she wanted a bank that shared her passion for building relationships and quality customer service. She saw those values in the way Dacotah Bank treated her as a personal customer so she decided to expand her relationship and use them for her business. “When I started my business, they were very knowledgeable with helping me set up the right account to manage the type of processing we do. Twyla, my personal banker was so easy to work with!” Dacotah Bank has been with her as her business has grown. “When we

advertorial

moved into a larger space five years ago, they helped in such a way, that I didn’t have to do anything,” said Laurie, “I called Twyla, requested an address change, and she handled what needed to be done. She was diligent about being there physically for ribbon cuttings, etc. It shows me they are truly concerned about the progress of my business and how they can help me move forward.”

Twyla Bryant, personal banker at Dacotah Bank says we pride ourselves on supporting a business like Try it Again. “We focus on helping local businesses in Sioux Falls, supporting the surrounding communities grow and retaining great talent locally.” Dacotah Bank supports all of the communities they are in, which is part of their culture and history. “When you walk into any of our locations, we want you to feel like you are coming home,” says Twyla. Dacotah Bank offers the same products and services as other financial institutions, but they differentiate themselves by focusing on a personal touch and doing business on a first-name basis. “We are big enough to provide all the products and services that you require, but small enough to care about your individual needs. With local businesses, customers are not just a number or a dollar amount,” said Twyla. “Like local businesses, we build relationships and take care of generations of families.”

This is true for Laurie and her family. Not only does she use Dacotah Bank for her business but her entire family and their finances are with Dacotah Bank as well. “They are there when we need them.” says Laurie. “A while back, my son was deployed to Afghanistan and he was having trouble getting access to his online account. I called Dacotah Bank and they worked with me to get him the access he needed.” I would recommend Dacotah Bank to anyone looking for a bank for their business or personal finances. They live up to their motto of “here for you.”

Living in a Winter Wonderland

Photos by Margaret Pennock

It’s the most wonderful time of the year and after much anticipation, the Anderson family is finally home for the holidays, settling in to their two-story dream home nestled in the outskirts of Sioux Falls. Having moved from Colorado, this holiday marks the first year they will be spending Christmas together as a family in Sioux Falls. Just as the calendar flips to December, this family went to work trimming their home with festive décor. From traditional pine garlands and homemade tree ornaments to trendy eucalyptus and modern holiday accessories, Sarah Anderson, with help from husband Jordan and their daughters Sydney and Alexandra, decked the halls and much more.

Starting off with a grand open staircase, rustic pine garland showcases the stunning architectural feature while remaining classic. White walls, high ceilings and large windows fully encase the space in natural sunlight. The floors add contrast with a wide plank darker hued wood that perfectly anchors the layers of neutral tones.

“I really wanted this space to be a sanctuary,” adds Sarah, when commenting on the décor and style of the main level office which is occupied by husband, Jordan. Although he seldom works from home, this space ensures all work and no play, literally. “He shared his office with the girls’ toy room in our other home,” Sarah says with a smile.

Now, this space is elegant yet masculine with neutral walls, dark wood floors and modern gold accents. A cozy fireplace is encased in stone and topped off with a simple stained wood mantle and flanked white bookcases, perfect for adding family photos and treasures.

“This light fixture was here when we moved in,” she adds, commenting on the subtle gold drum light fixture. “And I like how it blends with the rest of the room.” A rawhide rug, rustic old world style desk and black leather pub chairs anchor the space while adding a soft touch. “I really wanted this new office to be minimal for a more peaceful space. However, I still like using mixed metals and a lot of texture.”

Using family as art, Sarah selected a variety of black and white photos with modern gold frames to add detail to the formal dining room. Perfect for holiday gatherings and parties, a large wood table and convenient window opening to the kitchen are musthaves for hosting and serving food. Neutral walls and painted trim keep the look modern and crisp while an oversized glass ribbon light fixture adds the perfect amount of drama.

The heart of the home is an extension of classic beauty. Sarah maximized her decorating budget by utilizing the existing white cabinets. A center island is topped off with rich, marble countertops while a dangling crystal rectangular pendant light adds a soft glow and elegant touch. Although there are still small things Sarah and Jordan hope to do in this space, the area is warm, inviting and incorporates Sarah’s signature style.

A double tiered peninsula is perfect for morning coffee or after school snacks, another must for this young and active family. A casual dining area with dual toned table and chairs overlooks the sprawling two acres of land dotted with lush trees and of course, a fire pit and playset. “I love this covered back porch and how you can look out and just envision summer days with the kids playing outside.”

But with warm weather memories behind them, the Anderson family is fully embracing the festive season. A twelve-foot tree is the center of attention and fits perfectly in the expansive main level living room and features a blend of nostalgic ornaments and trimming. “I just had to do the tinsel,” says Sarah. “It’s just so much fun to do with the kids.”

Neutral tones and large windows keeps the space cozy and inviting with a fireplace topped off with pine garland and modern accessories. Dual bookcases are painted white, adding to the detail of the space and blend with the upholstered furniture. “A lot of

people question the white sofas but I love how they look and it gives a good reason for staying in the kitchen to eat,” she chuckles.

Not many interior hallways lead to a view like this. The master bathroom is a sanctuary with a large, white claw foot tub, vintage style chrome fixtures and arched window overlooking a pear tree.

“We haven’t had a chance to use this tub yet but the girls love it. And the best part is that they get to look out and watch the pears grow.”

Traditional grey and white jacquard wallpaper offers a subtle glisten while the elongated white marble floors remain smooth. An arched doorway leads to the walk-in shower and two large rectangular mirrors with matching wall sconces hang above a contrasting black granite countertop with dual sinks.

Simple yet detailed, the master bedroom is the perfect place to rest and relax. A large, white tufted headboard makes a statement with its size and style while the bedding takes casual cues with its layers of muted tones in relaxed fabrics such as cotton and linen. They all come together for an inviting space that makes a statement.

“The nice thing about this home is that even though I didn’t pick everything out, I like the way the past homeowners decorated. I can live with it for now and just slowly change things out.”

Up the winding stairs is an overlook that is breathtaking with its head-on view of the large black wrought iron and crystal orb chandelier. “I love how this home looks at night, “she adds. “This chandelier looks amazing.”

To remain family-friendly, a small “book nook” was created in the loft overlooking the living room. Jordan and his father showcased their talents for woodworking by constructing custom cabinets and shelves to accompany a daybed.

Although Jordan says his building skills are “trial and error,” one would never know by the way Alex’s bedroom turned out. A custom-made cottage bed is painted white and maximizes space with its design.

Roman shades with blush semi-sheer side panels accent the windows while a beaded chandelier finishes off the space.

“I have a similar photo in my office,” says Jordan when referring to the framed black and white photo of Sydney on

the wall. Showcasing her sassy side, the image is a true tribute to the young lady who occupies this whimsical space.

Light blush walls offset a myriad of textures that make up the bedding. Meanwhile, a wrought iron canopy overhead is complete with gold dangling stars. Staying classic yet fun, tassel pendant lights dangle and provide a soft glow. Finishing off the upstairs is a large playroom that maximizes space and organization with custom made shelves filled with small baskets.

Perfect for festive gatherings, the lower level features a full kitchen, sport court and a guest bedroom. The kitchen takes a traditional turn with darker wood stains and stone. A large stone fireplace features a large, flat screen television and is complete with dual bookcases.

“When I get a chance to relax, this is my favorite place,” adds Jordan. And Sarah agrees. The soft leather upholstery is described as the “most comfortable place.”

The festive tree brings smiles to both their faces as they notice a unique bottom-heavy decorating style. “I’m totally leaving this,” Sarah laughs as she glances at the array of ornaments clustered at the bottom portion of

the tree. “I can tell this was done by the kids and it’s just perfect.”

And when it comes time for serious movie watching, the lower level theatre room is the place to be. “We watch movies quite bit so we really love having this space,” adds Sarah. “And the kids love it because they feel like they are in a theatre.”

Although the Andersons are technically still “settling in,” their home reflects a cozy, lived-in retreat that’s perfect for family, friends and guests. “I knew the minute I opened the door that our family belonged in this home,” adds Sarah. “I hope others feel just as welcome.” n

DIY Felt Trees

Story & photos by Emily Olson

SUPPLIES

• Felt in preferred colors and thickness

• Styrofoam cone

• Glue gun with low temp glue sticks

• Sticks cut in varying heights

• Discs cut from tree branches in a varying sizes

• Drill and bits to match size of sticks

These rustic and whimsical felt trees bring the outdoors inside for the holiday season and beyond. Create a mini forest that includes all three styles or replicate just one style with different colors and sizes. Colorways can be neutral like the combination here, a mix of traditional holiday colors, or trendy hues like mustard and teal. Increase the textures in this mixed media project by using a combination of felt types.

TREE BASES

Each tree style uses a variety of sizes of discs for the base. Experiment with stacking to create different looks. In each disc that will hold a stick (tree trunk), drill a hole that corresponds with the stick thickness. Add each tree to the base as the final step.

TRADITIONAL “EVERGREEN” SHAPE

1. Create a template by drawing half (lengthwise) of an “evergreen” tree shape.

2. Trace template on to felt and cut out. If using lighter craft felt, fold in half and place template straight edge along the fold, creating a full tree when opened after cutting. If using heavy-weight felt, trace and cut single layers of tree halves. Number will vary depending on desired density of tree.

3. Apply glue in small increments to the straight edge of the tree half (or on the fold fold if using light-weight felt). Attach to the stick, working from the top of the tree and moving down.

STAR TREE

1. Thick wool felt works best for this style. Copy & paste a basic star shape several times in a document to create individual templates in graduated sizes.

2. Cut out the felt with pinking shears for added interest.

3. Pierce a small hole through the center of each star cut-out.

4. “Thread“ through the stick starting with the largest star to the smallest and glue each in place.

CONICAL LEAF TREE

1. Heavy-weight craft felt squares work well for this style. Create 3 sizes of graduated leaf-shaped templates and cut out several felt leaves of each size.

2. Glue the felt leaves to the styrofoam beginning at the bottom with the largest leaves taking about 1/3 of the cone height, followed by 1/3 medium sized leaves, and the top third being the smallest.

3. Push the stick through the styrofoam to create the trunk and hold into place with glue if necessary. n

Ensure Safe Play with these Toy Tips

Stores are jam packed with toys advertised for infants and toddlers. As the holiday season is fast approaching, relatives and family friends may be asking what to get for your children and you may be wondering what to recommend. Toys can help infants and toddlers explore and learn about the world around them. When you are selecting toys for children there are some key safety considerations to keep in mind.

Infants and young toddlers love to explore by putting things in their mouths which can cause some serious safety concerns.

• Toys for infants and toddlers should be at least 1¼ by 2¼ inches; consider purchasing a choke tester tube to check toy size.

• Check toys for small removable parts or broken pieces as these can be choking hazards.

• Immediately discard any packaging from a new toy including plastic, plastic ties and small cardboard pieces.

• Be very careful of toys, books, greeting cards and games that contain nickel cadmium “button” batteries; these can be extremely dangerous if swallowed.

• Discuss toy safety with older children so that they know to keep toys with small parts out of reach of infants and toddlers

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER

oys should be age appropriate. Pay attention to age recommendations and consider a child’s interests and

• Make sure toys can be cleaned or washed and pay attention to flammability of toys.

• Choose toys that are colorful, have various textures, and are made of non-toxic materials.

• Strings and cords on toys should be less than 7 inches in length, and should be monitored closely as they may pose a strangulation hazard.

• Find a website that lists recalls for children’s toys and equipment.

• Be cautious of homemade toys or craft show toys. Be sure they are painted with non-toxic paint and follow safety guidelines.

• Balloons are one of the most dangerous toys; never let children put uninflated balloons in their mouths and discard broken balloon pieces immediately.

The holiday season can be full of fun and excitement for the toddlers and infants in your life, as long as you keep in mind these key safety tips when selecting gifts. It is up to parents to double check the safety of toys.

Parents of young children should always supervise play. Have a safe and happy holiday season! n

Can You Hear What I Hear?

The Holidays and Hearing

“Christmas is a special time for family gatherings and untreated hearing loss can be a real problem that steals the holiday spirit.”

The holidays are known to be the most wonderful time of the year. However, when you struggle with hearing loss, the festive season can be a real challenge. Thanks to new stateof-the-art technology and stronger awareness, more people with hearing loss are turning to hearing aids. Audiologist, Bob Froke, from Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat is not only highly trained in audiology and communication disorders, he’s also a patient. “I have worn hearing aids now for almost five years,” he said. For Froke, a virus robbed him of hearing in the higher frequencies. And while every patient has a different story, their journeys all lead to the same place; a better quality of life thanks to hearing aids.

So how do you know if you’re a candidate for a hearing aid?

The answer is quite simple. Most people who suffer from minor or major hearing loss will find themselves struggling to listen in large groups, difficulty following conversations and avoiding noisy environments. “I tested an 83-yearold grandpa who thought things weren’t that bad until his grandchildren started passing him notes,” Froke exclaims. For others, the signs may be more subtle. “After recovering from my virus, I came back to work finding myself straining to understand and really focus,” he adds. “It was a lot of work!” After coming to grips with his hearing loss, Froke set out to be an example of how hearing aids can change lives. “I’m in the profession of helping people so I knew I needed to do something.”

Finding the right type of hearing aid is also an important consideration. For Froke, who wears what is commonly called a “receiver in the canal,” his device rests deep in the ear canal. All that’s seen is a discreet wire that runs over the ear to a sound processor unit tucked behind the ear. There are varying styles of hearing aids which all differ in placement, intensity and size. While some are completely in the canal, others may fit behind the ear. It’s advised to schedule an appointment with a trained professional and get tested to ensure the proper hearing aid is the one for you. And thanks to state-of-the-art technology, the benefits of hearing aids are more than just better hearing. “My device is also connected via Bluetooth technology to my iPhone,” adds Froke. “This makes phone calls come through so much clearer so conversations with my grandchildren are more enjoyable.”

In the end, it’s all about quality of life. As Froke shared both personally and from a patient’s perspective, most individuals who struggle with hearing loss find themselves in a better place after they have been professionally tested and fitted for the proper hearing device.

So this festive season, take charge of hearing loss. “Christmas should be a special time and untreated hearing loss can be a real problem that steals the holiday spirit,” said Froke.  After all, the gift of hearing may just be the perfect present for yourself or a loved one. n

How to Treat Hyperpigmentation

Expert advice on the best medical treatments

Whether you have scarring after an acne breakout, freckles that develop into sun spots from over- exposure, or discoloration caused by skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, the discoloration in your skin is usually classified as hyperpigmentation. This is because acne, sun overexposure and skin rashes can stimulate melanocytes, the cells that make pigment and give your skin it’s color, to over produce melanin leading to a discoloration or dark spot on their skin. The deeper the pigment, the harder it is to treat. For example, a sun spot that has had consistent exposure without protection will be harder to get rid of than a pigment that appears after a pimple.

ARTisan Skin and Laser Center, the only medical skin care clinic in our community led by a female surgeon, and specifically an eye surgeon, specializes in treating hyperpigmentation and offers several different types of treatment for the condition. “There are several factors that go into what treatment we choose for the client. Because of this we recommend each client have a complimentary skin care consultation so we can figure out the best treatment for them based on their skin type and concerns.” Says Dr. Alison R. Tendler MD. “While we offer different treatment options, one of our favorite and most effective is our Sciton Halo™ Laser, with or without BroadBand Light (BBL) technology.” says Dr.

Tendler. Halo™ is a skin rejuvenation treatment that uses a hybrid of two lasers to provide deep dermal rejuvenation with epidermal renewal. BBL is performed prior to the HALO™ to further improve pigmentation and enhance rejuvenation. Halo™ and BBL can help improve visible signs of aging, uneven skin tone, melasma, brown spots, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, poor skin texture, and mild scars (ie acne) along with many other conditions. Halo™ leaves the top layer of skin intact allowing you to return to normal activities as soon as you feel comfortable. The HALO™ treatment itself lasts only 30-45 minutes but clients can expect to be in the office for a total of two hours on the day of the procedure. Clients will have mild swelling for 1-3 days following the treatment. You will have MENDs (microscopic epithelial necrotic debris) 5-7 days post Halo™. You will begin to experience the full, healthy glow when the MENDs have made their way to the top of you skin and slough off. The greatest pigmentary improvement is generally seen 2-3 weeks post treatment. ARTisan highly recommends that clients stay out of the direct sun while healing and ALWAYS wear sunscreen. “Unfortunately, there is no magic eraser, but the clients can expect to start seeing improvement in tone and texture, fine lines and wrinkles, and overall glow, leaving them with healthy glowing skin. Some treatments can appear to have quicker results, but this is a marathon not a sprint!” shares Dr. Tendler.

There can be a lot of questions or concerns prior to having a laser treatment done. ARTisan Skin and Laser Center recommends that each client come in for a complimentary skin care consultation to answer questions prior to the treatment. “During the consultation we will take a series of pictures, do a Visia skin analysis that looks deeper into the skin, and go over all options for the client based on areas of concern, budget, and what their lifestyle allows for “downtime.” When a client comes in for the complimentary appointment, the experienced staff of ARTisans will go over all of the pre and post treatment expectations. “We believe that trust is so important and want all of our clients to feel very well educated on not only the treatment, but all of the pre and post expectations,” Says Dr. Tendler. “We want them to feel like the best versions of themselves! We focus on overall skin health with patients and not only focus on cosmetic benefits.”

Dr. Tendler strongly believes in personally achieving her best skin through the use of the same services and products she recommends to her clients. It is her passion, and that of her team, that drives them to help create the best version of themselves and their clients. Great skin takes time and effort and the ARTisans are honored to be a part of each individual client’s skin care journey. n

Breast Cancer Survivor’s Kindness at Event Changes Her Life

A thought pops in your head. It’s an unexpected, maybe even extravagant urge to do an act of kindness for someone else.

We’ve all had that sort of idea. But how many of us actually act on it? After all, it usually comes at an inconvenient time. Or it seems like it would cost too much.

Andrea Theis had a thought. It was a bold thought. It was an expensive thought. But above all, it was a kind thought.

Lives — and futures — can change when one person acts on one thought.

Theis had never heard of the keynote speaker, Nicole J. Phillips, before she attended the October 2018 Revive Retreat in Sioux Falls, hosted annually by Sanford Health for survivors of breast cancer.

Theis, from Hospers, Iowa, had never read the “Kindness Is Contagious” columns by Phillips that appear in newspapers in North Dakota and Minnesota. She didn’t know Phillips had published two books compiling stories of kindness. And she didn’t know about Phillips’ mission to encourage people to embrace the power of kindness.

Theis listened as Phillips gave examples of kindness that appear in her books. And then Theis had her thought — or “a nudge from the Holy Spirit,” as she calls it.

She didn’t ignore it. She didn’t hesitate. Instead, she did something most individuals wouldn’t even consider — for an audience of 100 breast cancer survivors plus 25 medical professionals.

“All of a sudden, I found myself standing up, and I’m like, I gotta go buy everybody a book,” Theis said. “They just need this book.”

The fact that Theis walked away during the speech didn’t faze Phillips. People do that for a variety of reasons. However, Phillips didn’t realize this particular reason would be revealed after she had finished her speech.

When Theis stood up, she headed over to the master of ceremonies, Jesse Dirksen, who also had been Theis’ breast surgeon. She told him she wanted to buy everyone there a copy of Phillips’ book “Kindness Is Contagious.”

So when Dr. Dirksen took the stage again after Phillips had finished, he called Theis up.

Laurie Kruse, nursing manager of the breast imaging department at Edith Sanford Breast Center, handled the details of the retreat. After Theis announced she was buying a book for everyone, Kruse said, “everybody just paused.”

“We felt this connection as a group, too,” Kruse said. “Then everybody stood up and cheered, and there were tears in the audience.”

Phillips couldn’t picture anything like this happening again in her speaking career. “How often does someone so believe in the power of your message that they want to make sure everyone can take a piece of it home with them?”

Afterward, Theis and Phillips kept in touch, mostly through Facebook messages. Theis also became a prayer warrior for Phillips’ Kindness team.

And in August 2019, it was Phillips’ turn to surprise Theis by inviting her to take a communications position on the Kindness team.

What a difference acting on one kind thought can make. n

The Song of a Lifetime

Singer with cystic fibrosis teaches others how to live

When Ashley Ballou-Bonnema was born, her parents were told she wouldn’t live past age 18. Today, she’s 32 and making the most of life while inspiring others to do the same.

Ashley has cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disease that overloads organs with an excess of mucus. The illness involves a life of painful treatments, hospital stays, and the possibility of premature death. But she’s not letting her diagnosis stop her from living life to the fullest and living a life of purpose.

“With CF, we’ll always wake up the next day having to fight for every breath and having to think about a future we know isn’t necessarily going to be easy,” she said. “But at the end of the day, you’re the one who gets to decide who you want to be and how you want to live your life.”

Like all of us, Ashley needs to take about 25,000 breaths a day, and each breath can be a struggle when dealing with CF. Daily therapy can help clear the lungs; strong antibiotics can fight lung infections. In Ashley’s case the lung bacteria have become resistant to many antibiotics. She takes about 40 pills each day to ward off infection.

A native of Larchwood, Iowa, Ashley was diagnosed early with CF. Doctors knew to test her for CF right away because her older brother had been diagnosed shortly before Ashley was born. Sadly, her brother passed away at age 17 from CF.

“It’s pretty humbling to realize my brother’s diagnosis allowed me to still be alive today because I was diagnosed at one month,” she said. “If not, I would have had to show complications before they knew I had CF.”

Her love of singing began when she was a young girl riding with her Dad in the family’s van. “He would play ‘We built this city’ over and over again,” she said. “I knew then I wanted to be a singer.”

Growing up, Ashley said few people knew she had CF.

“It’s called an invisible disease because by looking at me you wouldn’t know I have CF,” she said, adding, “I could blend in with my counterparts pretty easily.”

86 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2019 profile | cover story

While she had a happy childhood, CF took a devastating toll on her family.

“I witnessed the real horrors of what CF can do not only to my brother but also to my family, and I saw how much pain it caused my parents,” she said.

Not wanting to cause additional pain to her parents and friends, Ashley did her best to downplay her CF and continually ignored it.

“I played the denial card pretty hard and thought I was stronger than CF,” she said. “I was going to prove to myself and others that CF couldn’t control me. If I felt myself starting to get a cold, I would push myself harder. It’s an unhealthy coping mechanism that’s gotten me into trouble.”

While attending college for music, Ashley pushed herself even harder while continuing to hide her disease.

“I only wanted the people who I was forced to tell about my CF to know as I didn’t want to be measured by my CF,” she said. “I wanted to be set against the same standards as my peers so it wasn’t ‘Oh you’re good at this because you have CF or in spite of CF.’”

In 2014, Ashley started a blog called “Breathe Bravely” to chronicle the details of her life to family and friends. Since then her blog has drawn in thousands of readers who are captivated by her candor, humor and lessons she’s learned from living on the edge of death.

Starting the blog wasn’t easy, she said.

“I’d sit there for hours agonizing because I knew I was going to open this door to a side of me that no one knew,” she said. “I

put on this great facade every time I’d walk out the door, that everything was perfect.”

For Ashley, the point of sharing what she’s going through isn’t to make others feel as if their lives are not as equally difficult as hers.

“We may call it something different but at the end of the day, our feelings are exactly the same, and that’s what really connects us and binds us together with empathy,” she said. “I wanted people to know CF is more of a means of human connection than separation.”

Later that year, Ashley experienced significant complications from CF and her lung function plummeted from 50 percent to 25 percent. The day before Thanksgiving she was transferred from Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls to the University of Minnesota Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

“The conversation about needing a lung transplant happened, and pursuing it relatively quickly, and in my mind I was thinking ‘This is not how this is supposed to happen. My body is not ready for this. My life isn’t ready for this,’” she said.

Ashley had always told herself when the time came for a transplant, she wasn’t sure if she would want one.

“I feel that I would have lived the life I’m supposed to have lived,” she said. “And that’s a personal choice, right? To be 28 years old and faced with that future, thinking this is it, it’s over unless I have the transplant was really horrifying. And thinking I’m not ready to give up this life I love so much.”

Either due to her stubbornness or the dedicated effort given by her care team in trying to avoid the transplant, Ashley returned to her final semester of graduate school. Her lung function went

from 25 percent to 50 percent and she gave her final recital at the end of May.

“It was tough and I’m amazed I did it, but I also knew during that six month period, it was important for me to feel what my body really needed and to experience the entirety of my respiratory system, and how it was building more and more strength.”

As daunting as the need for a transplant was, it wasn’t nearly as terrifying as the possibility of not singing again, Ashley said.

“I was left so emotionally raw by that thought, which sounds so silly. That’s when I realized how I needed singing to live. It wasn’t just that I loved to sing but there was this innate need in me that I had to sing to survive.”

When Ashley’s lung capacity improved from 25 percent to 50 percent, she returned to graduate school and received her masters in vocal performance. Around that time, a friend asked her what she was going to do next.

“I said, ‘I think I want to start a nonprofit and focus on giving voice lessons to people with CF so they know the benefits of singing.’ The benefits have been so life-giving to me I wanted others to have the chance to know the same thing.”

In November 2015, Ashley’s Breathe Bravely non-profit was launched with a grant from the Sioux Falls Community Foundation. Then, an Impact Grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation funded their siINgSPIRE program launch. siINgSPIRE is a 10-week program that combats the effects of CF through the art of singing by pairing individuals with CF with professional voice instructors for 10 weeks of private voice lessons via video call.

“Those with CF can’t be in the same room with each other due to the possibility of cross infection, so the video call lets them be in a safe place,” she said. “What we’ve seen happen to the students has been very empowering and life-giving.”

Last June, Ashley debuted the virtual choir with 14 singers from around the world, and the song they performed, “Until It’s Done” was written by her. Recently, Breathe Bravely was awarded another Impact Grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to continue the virtual choir program.

“Thinking how powerful a choir experience can be, you’re coming together and feeling each other’s energy and you’re creating this impactful voice of unity. This allows our voices to collaborate in that sense.”

sINgSPIRE started their ninth session two weeks ago and has connected with over 57 students from 25 different states and in three countries. To date, the program has provided 1,200 voice lessons.

A former board member for Breathe Bravely, Becky Blue, had this to say about Ashley and her mission: “Ashley is a passionate and generous leader with laser focus on how she wants Breathe Bravely to impact the lives of those living with cystic fibrosis and their families. I have been honored to be on her board and blessed by her creativity, authenticity, and gratefulness.”

This year, Breathe Bravely was named the recipient of the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation’s 2019 Community Spirit Award, celebrating the nonprofit’s work to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis, and recognizing its innovative efforts to positively impact those living with the disease.

Besides running her nonprofit and her virtual choir, Ashley maintains a voice studio in Sioux Falls, teaching area high school students. She’s been married to her high school sweetheart, Mark, for 11 years.

Ashley rejects the idea that those with CF can’t sing because they have unhealthy lungs.

“I have a student from Sweden with 25 percent lung function, and it’s amazing how she’s able to use her voice, and the gorgeous sound that comes out. It’s a humbling reminder that it’s not the amount of breaths that you have but it’s what you do with those breaths.”

Recently, a life-saving drug was approved by the FDA, marking a tremendous breakthrough and exciting news for people with cystic fibrosis.

“We’ve been literally holding our breath until we saw the press releases and official medication overview because depending on how things are stated, it could include or preclude me from being eligible for the medication,” said Ashley adding, “Thankfully I’m eligible for the new medication.”

While Ashley’s day-to-day might be dominated by her disease, she refuses to let her life be diminished by it.

“The simple truth is I will always live this gifted life in the company of cystic fibrosis, and at times, in the shadow of its mercy. But, I also realize first and foremost that I will always be a singer. A singer who just happens to have CF. All that matters now is where I go from here - living my truth and giving voice to cystic fibrosis.”

When asked what advice she would give others about living life, Ashley didn’t hesitate.

“Surround yourself with the remarkable and meaningful, and you will surely live the most beautiful of dreams that just happens to be your life.” n

Amazing Lash Studio Now Open

Firsthand product experience lead mother and daughter to acquire franchise

Amazing Lash Studio opened at the Prairie Hills Galleria August 30. The studio provides clients semi-permanent eyelash extensions in private lash application suites.

April and Travis Buysee and April’s parents, Lisa and Jim Wichman, own and operate the franchise.

“I first came across the Amazing Lash Studio as a client at a Twin Cities location last year. It was then that I fell in love with my lash extensions,” says April. “My mom Lisa Wichman visited a studio in Phoenix and had the same reaction as I did.”

Both women say they were not only impressed with Amazing Lash Studio’s product, there was also the customer service and elegant atmosphere.

“We both had a great firsthand experience,” says Lisa. “We researched the company and were intrigued with the possibilities of owning the franchise in Sioux Falls.”

A relatively new franchise, Amazing Lash Studio was founded in 2010. It involves a proprietary, patented process where semi-permanent eyelash extensions are applied to a client’s own lashes. The company began franchising in 2013 and now have 230 studios in 23 states. Entrepreneur Magazine ranked it number five on its list of top new franchises. The Sioux Falls franchise is the first in South Dakota.

With family business ownership, Lisa believes Amazing Lash Studio has an “amazing” team.

“My mother and I are understandably more familiar with the product and service,” says April. “And my dad, Jim, and my husband, Travis, are experienced with the overall business side. Beside that, we are all from Sioux Falls.”

The team believes Sioux Falls is the ideal location for the new franchise.

“The city has awesome people, a great culture and a strong business environment.”

Amazing Lash Studio currently employs a staff of 13 with 9 licensed estheticians and cosmetologists to complete the service. The studio will continue to grow their staff. The stylists all receive special training in eyelash extension procedures and are state certified. The initial Lash extension application service takes approximately two hours to complete, and maintenance fills take an hour.

The new studio is already involved in the community. They have been a part of fundraisers such as Legends for Kids, Briars Blessings, Dress for Success and The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Gala. They are Chamber members and have partnered with other local businesses including Artisan Skin and Laser Center, Leela and Lavender, and Beautique.

“Women’s empowerment is one of the core pillars of Amazing Lash Studio, so partnering with organizations that help women of all ages is a great fit,” says Lisa.

Amazing Lash Studio is located at 2010 W. 69th Street in the Prairie Hills Galleria. The studio is open Monday through Friday 9am to 8pm; Saturday, 9am to 7pm; and Sunday 10am to 5pm. For more information call: 605.988.4588 or visit AmazingLashStudio.com n

South Dakota Classic Opens New Store

New Dimock Cheese Store Pairs Famous Cheeses with South Dakota Foods and Wines

Since 1931, Dimock Dairy has been making delicious handcrafted artisan cheese that has become a South Dakota classic. In the past, people have driven miles to get their hands on the locally famous product that is renowned for its incredible taste and texture. But because Dimock Dairy wanted to honor its hometown roots while expanding their storefront, they have opened a new Dimock Cheese store in Dimock.

According to Office Manager Tina Roth, “We built our new store along Highway 37 hoping people would stop and enjoy all the new and delicious products we are able to carry now that we have space. We give out cheese samples daily and carry lots of local favorites such as Delmont Sausage and Brats, Kaylor Chislic and Hotdogs, Pietz Kuchens and Pizzas, SDSU Ice Cream and Cold Stone Ice Cream. We have a large assortment of South Dakota made wines and South Dakota craft beers in our cooler along with other beverages.”

Originally Dimock Dairy was started as a Cooperative by local dairy farmers but was sold in 2015 to local investors. This influence allowed Dimock Cheese to flourish with an expanded line of products, which now includes 25 varieties of premium cheeses and 9 cheese spreads. In addition, they now deliver cheese to stores in a five state area and ship throughout the United States. They have also become proficient in creating delicious gift boxes.

Tina shares, “We would like businesses and individuals to remember us when they are looking for that special gift for employees and/or clients. We can offer Gift Boxes year round or some people get blocks of cheese to give as gifts or thank you’s! We also have a great fundraising program which we can specialize to work with your organization or needs, such as Gift Boxes, packaged Cheese Bites and blocks of Cheese. We can ship right to your loved ones with a personalized note from you.”

The staple cheese Colby is Dimock Cheese’s biggest seller but all cheeses, especially the specialty flavored cheeses are really growing in demand. Tina notes, “Our new Raspberry Jalapeno Cheese is really taking off, there is so much flavor going on in your mouth when you eat this cheese!”

For more information and to view the delicious and locally made cheese products, visit dimockdairy.com or make an experience of it and drive to check out the new store, which is an adorable modern barn, in Dimock at 155 W 1st St from 8am6:30pm Monday through Fridays or Saturday from 8am-2pm. n

Integrated Care and Consultation

When asked what first interested her in psychology and behavioral health, Krystal Lohff said she’s always been intuitive and willing to help others, “I guess you could say I have an old soul.” And it’s befitting that she’s the owner as well as a provider at Integrated Care and Consultation, where behavioral health is approached from every angle.

Integrated Care and Consultation takes every aspect of clients’ lives into their treatment, revolutionizing the healing and healthcare process with life experience and the element of being human. “We utilize approaches that help clients heal by taking the entire human being and their life experiences into consideration for assessment and treatment purposes. We look at how each part of a person’s life can lead to concerns in other areas.” This holistic psychotherapy looks for connections through emotions, spiritual awareness, physical experiences, and thoughts, and treats each person as a whole. “Therapists can help individuals realize how each of these components work together in harmony to support typical daily function. This deeper understanding of the whole self can often lend itself to greater selfawareness, improved self-esteem, and self-acceptance.”

Lohff strongly believes that we as a society need to start looking at overall wellness, rather than being disease-focused, and has taken Integrated Care and Consultation as an opportunity to explore everything: “I want to be able to grow Integrated Care and Consultation to house several therapists, a financial planner, dietician, functional medicine doctor,

96 SiouxFallsWoman.net | Holiday 2019

massage therapist and acupuncturist. I want to be able to offer yoga classes and various group therapy sessions as well.” She says her goal is to create one place where clients can get all the assistance they need for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

Life is best enjoyed fully, emotionally, physically, and spiritually strong. “My hope for clients of Integrated Care and Consultation is for everyone to find hope, joy and meaning to their life.” Lohff says. “We live in a fast-paced society, therefore tend to seek things that are easy and convenient. It makes it more difficult for us to stop, see the flowers, smell the flowers, embrace the flowers, and enjoy where we are at. We just merely start surviving in life and not truly living. My hope is for all the clients to feel like they are living their best life and not to have that regret later on in life that they should have done something. I see so much of this in the older population and hope to help those that can live a more meaningful life.”

Krystal Lohff and her fellow care providers specialize in geriatric counseling, chronic health conditions, insomnia, chronic pain, trauma, depression and anxiety. They also all have experience in working with children through geriatrics and can provide biofeedback if appropriate. For more information or to schedule a session, call 605.306.3240 or visit yourintegratedcare.com today. n
