CELEBRATING THE PAST AND LOOKING AHEAD By Natalie Slieter | Photos courtesy of Southeast Tech

S

outheast Tech has been educating the Sioux Falls community since 1968. What started as a small organization offering only five programs has grown to a large campus offering 68 programs. The programs can be completed in two years or less and cover a variety of industry sectors. The short-term programs allow students to get to work quickly so they can start making a difference in the Sioux Falls area. To thank students, alumni, staff and the community for supporting them the past 50 years, Southeast Tech is throwing a free 50th Anniversary Community Celebration. It’s their way of thanking the community for entrusting the school with their loved ones as they further their education and strive for a better life, and to thank industry partners for their support, as it made the success of Southeast Tech possible. The celebration is planned for Thursday, September 13 from 4:00-8:45 p.m. on their campus located at 2320 N. Career Avenue. The family-friendly event is free to attend and open to the whole community. There will be food trucks, a car show, a special performance by Phil Baker in a designated children’s area, and a performance by a top country artist. The night will conclude with a fireworks show.

16

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2018

Stephanie Entringer, nursing instructor at Southeast Tech, explained that the goal of the event is to express their gratitude toward the Sioux Falls community for welcoming them to the area 50 years ago. The theme for the party is “Southeast Tech: Igniting Careers for 50 years,” with the hopes of getting people excited about what the school is doing and how they are helping the community. In Sioux Falls, there is currently a workforce shortage and Southeast Tech believes they are the solution. “There are a lot of people who know about Southeast Tech, but they don’t really know what we do,” Entringer said. “We offer a fun way to get an engaging career. We want to get people out on campus and share our passion for learning and high-demand careers.” Along with educating people about Southeast Tech and what they have to offer, Entringer said they also want the celebration to provide something for everyone, so lining up a variety of entertainment options was important when planning the event. “It’s our 50th birthday party and everyone is invited,” Entringer said. “The event is for the community.” n

ARTISAN 57: ANNUAL APPRECIATION EVENT By Natalie Slieter | Photos courtesy of Artisan 57

A

rtisan 57 is a skin and laser center housed in the Vance Thompson Vision building. Dr. Alison Tendler is a board-certified ophthalmologist surgeon and the creator and leading provider at Artisan 57, offering laser skin care, cosmetic injectables, and facial rejuvenation techniques to help patients feel confident in the skin they are in. To show appreciation to clients as well as get new people excited about what Artisan 57 can provide, they will be hosting their 5th annual Artisan 57 Appreciation Event on Monday, September 10th at 5 p.m. at the Vance Thompson Vision building. The event is free to attend, but they do encourage those who plan to come to RSVP ahead of time. Vendors and experts in the skin care industry as well as local artisans will be at the event to educate attendees on the new and exciting products. There will also be many prize drawings to sign up for, such as medicalgrade skin care products, neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport, dermal fillers, aesthetic treatments, and other prizes donated by local businesses, amounting to

18

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2018

thousands of dollars of prizes being given away. Clients who attend the event can look forward to receiving special pricing on all Artisan 57 offerings and gift cards, which will only occur at this appreciation event. “I want people to diminish their fear of aesthetic treatments by coming in and seeing not only who we are and what we offer, but to understand what makes us passionate about this field,” Dr. Tendler said. “We’re trying to get people healthy skin.” For the feature prize, Artisan 57 will be donating a Halo laser treatment, valued at $1,500. Attendees will need to purchase tickets to be entered to win at the event. The proceeds from the ticket sales will go to Dress for Success, a nonprofit organization in Sioux Falls that provides professional clothing to women so they can feel confident when attending job interviews and going to work. Dr. Tendler emphasizes that the Appreciation Event will be a great way to kickstart the fall, winter, and spring months, which are the most popular for skin care.

“Fall is the time to make plans for the next year of your skin care routine,” Dr. Tendler explained. “We need to take care of the damage we did to ourselves in the summer.” Dr. Tendler says the goal of her and her team at Artisan 57 is to help clients feel good about the skin they’re in and ultimately, that their confidence leads them to feel empowered. “An artisan is somebody who is skilled in a trade, especially one that involves making things by hand. We are creating something like an artisan, using our hearts, our hands, our minds, and our souls to do what we do,” Dr. Tendler said. n

STRENGTHENING FAMILIES PROGRAM 10 -14 Offering Support and Hope in Sioux Falls By Jill Funke | Photo by Maggie Sweets Photography

C

arroll Institute is excited to bring a seventh session of Strengthening Families Program 10-14 (SFP 10-14) to Sioux Falls in September. This program helps youth develop the skills necessary to resist the peer pressure that often leads to risky behaviors. SFP 10-14 families learn skills to set limits with love by using fun activities where they play games, enjoy a sit-down meal, and find out about community resources to support their parenting role. Since it was first offered in early 2015, the program has empowered 101 care givers and youth, impacting 32 total families. The Carroll Institute Project Awareness Prevention Program became aware of SFP 10-14 in 2014, and felt it was a good match with their mission. According to Barbra L. DeVos, MS, NCC, LPC, LAC, SD Certified School Counselor, “Carroll Institute believes it is important to offer teaching opportunities to caregivers and youth in this age group (10-14), as these frequently are tough years for tweens and youth to learn how to resist peer pressures. Families must be ready and able to openly communicate with their youth to support non-violence and nonsubstance using lifestyles.” Participants of SFP 10-14 are caregivers and their youth, ages 10-14. Caregivers are the adults in a youth’s life that support that child to learn and grow, and can include many different relationships such as parents, foster parents, grandparents, a great aunt, a significant other,

20

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2018

or even divorced parents. The program is open to all, as DeVos says, “Any family that wants to strengthen their family can participate in SFP 10-14. There are no income guidelines and families don’t necessarily have problems to be able to attend.” Because the program is assisted with funding from a state Partners for Success grant, Sioux Valley Energy-Operation Round-Up grant and Carroll Institute general funding, there is a minimal cost of $35 for participants. If this cost would deter interested families, DeVos advises, “We are willing to work with families on the cost. We can also help connect them with resources if transportation is an issue.” Caregivers participating in SFP 10-14 have appreciated the flexibility of the program in working with each family at their individual functioning level, and are grateful for the ways the program supports growth in communication within their families. According to caregiver and program participant Paula Mitchell, “Strengthening families was a great experience for our family.” Explaining how the program helped her family, Mitchell said, “During the sessions, the instructors took us through practical exercises that were easy to implement to help get our family in sync.” These exercises are designed to help youth practice peer resistance skills in fun, creative role-plays that at times include their caregivers. In addition, caregivers receive the support they need to establish or re-establish love and limits within their homes. Participation often results in youth and caregivers learning more about each other’s lives and appreciating each other, leading Mitchell to comment, “Our family benefited greatly from the course because it helped both kids and parents reframe the way in which we dealt with discipline, motivation, and expressing the love we have for one another.” Those who are interested in the fall SFP 10-14 program are encouraged to contact Carroll Institute at 605.336.2556. n

HAVE A SEAT! Upcycled Chairs Part of the Form + Fashion Meets Function Portfolio Show By Virginia Olson | Photos by Good Life Photography

hat can you do with an old chair? For Kate Christensen, the sky is the limit. Katie’s upcycled chairs will be the stars at the Form + Fashion Meets Function Portfolio Show at the Institute of Design & Technology SD (IDTSD) on August 24 and 25. For the last year, Kate has been a student at IDTSD. As part of her portfolio project, Kate’s objective was to find “the worn or ugly” and give it new life. She did just that with five old chairs she found at flea markets. Her unique designs coupled with high quality Oscar de la Renta fabric transformed her chairs into works of art. At age 36, Kate describes herself as a non-traditional student who made the leap and returned to school. Her daughter Faith was her inspiration.

“My 10-year-old daughter had gotten a gift certificate at Christmas to attend the summer boot camp program at IDTSD. I loved her projects. I also knew that I always had a head full of great ideas and that I was a retro soul who loved color, painting and restoring things. It was then I jumped in with both feet and decided I needed to explore my talent in design here at IDTSD,” she says. “I knew I had this creativity in me.” Anita Kealey, Creative Director of IDTSD, is pleased with the quality, resourcefulness and whimsical nature of Kate’s work. For Anita, Kate’s work is what the Institute is all about. “At IDTSD, we reinforce ‘process’ in design. It is essential to preserve the integrity of artistic, hands-on skills in the design process. In preparation for a career in design, students must

DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL TOGETHER Serve Your Relationship by Serving Your Community By Chellee Unruh

T

here are lots of ways to spend quality time with your spouse. Exploring common interests and discovering new ones help to keep your relationship fresh. Exercising together, adopting a new hobby or just carving out time in your schedule for a regular date night, are just a few ways you and your spouse can get closer as a couple. These are all great choices, but there is another activity that is often disregarded but has great potential to help you reach a new level of love and commitment in your relationship: volunteering in your community. Volunteering is a great option for couples because it allows you to indulge in activities that you enjoy doing with the bonus of serving the community. A great example would be if you both like to cook, then try volunteering at the Banquet. You will get the same experience of cooking together, but you will have the added enjoyment of preparing a nourishing meal

for men, women, and children in need. If you share a love for animals, you can volunteer your time at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society and help them socialize the animals, increasing their chances of getting adopted. No matter where your passion lies there is likely a volunteer opportunity that fits you as a couple. The HelpLine Center is your one-stop shop where you can browse the many volunteer opportunities in the Sioux Empire. While you are enjoying the volunteer activity and impacting the lives of others, your relationship also has the potential to receive a lasting positive impact. Volunteering is a powerful bonding experience. While you are looking for the right volunteer opportunity for you as a couple you will likely engage in a meaningful conversation about your core values, passions and why certain causes matter more to you than others. Learning what your partner is passionate about lends itself to a deeper understanding of who they are as a person, strengthening your bond as a couple. Volunteering can be a conduit for working through problems you are facing in your relationship and in life. What better way to gain perspective on your own issues at home than to volunteer at a homeless shelter? Helping those less fortunate than you helps you to put things into perspective and be grateful for what have. You will not only gain more satisfaction with your partner, you will have a renewed appreciation for your life in general.

Two hands are always better than one and when you sever together you double the impact by working as a team to support your favorite cause. LIVING FEARLESS – Nano Nagle By Natalie Slieter

“You see it has pleased the Almighty to make me succeed, when I had everything as I may say, to fight against.” - Venerable Nano Nagle

“In order to set fear aside, I believe having a foundation of faith is most important and then having strong relationships with individuals such as my family and people I work with. I need to be comfortable with who I am and place my trust in God and that my religious beliefs will carry me forward.” - David Flicek, President and CEO of Avera McKennan

T

o act fearlessly doesn’t mean ignoring fear. Rather it is the ability to take action in the midst of our fear, moving beyond our comfort zone to do what we know is right and to go where we are called. Nano Nagle lived 300 years ago during a time of oppression and social injustice of Catholicism and those who practiced it in Ireland. After completing school in France, she returned to Ireland. What she encountered devastated her. While in France, she had lived high in society and a sophisticated lifestyle, while the people of the Catholic church back in Ireland were dealing with oppression and poverty. “She knew she had to do something for her people,” Sister Deb Nelson said. That’s when Nano opened schools in secret to teach children who were denied an education due to their choice of religion. What she was doing affected not only her, but her family as well. The cost of her actions could have meant imprisonment, loss of land, and death, instead she chose to act with courage and be fearless.

Her vision was that people needed to respond to the social injustices around the world and help the outcasts in society, very much like Jesus who associated himself with sinners. “She did what she felt was right in her heart,” Sister Deb said. “She became a sign of hope, a light in the darkness, not letting fear stop her.” Nano’s fearlessness lit a fire in the Sisters who continue to this day to believe all people are interconnected and the importance of working with those in the margins of society in order to have a more just and peaceful world. The Presentation Sisters, like Sister Deb Nelson of Aberdeen, focus on peacemaking and assisting in constructive dialogue within communities across the globe and are in 24 countries around the world. They also work internationally with the United Nations on global issues. Sister Deb encourages the Sioux Falls community to show fearlessness by taking small steps. For Sister Deb, traveling to Africa was not something she woke up deciding to do, but she did

decide to take small steps to prepare herself and kept her heart and mind open, which led to her going across the world to help those in need. “We need to own our fear and not let our fear own us or stop us,” Sister Deb explained. “We need to be willing to move out of our comfort zones and perform small acts of courage every day, in order to be ready to take the big steps when needed. By living fearlessly, we can be the best version of ourselves.” She suggests getting to know people you wouldn’t ordinarily reach out to, standing up for what you believe in, calling your Congressional representative when seeing an injustice, helping someone in need, or taking on new experiences. Also, learning to give to others, being grateful, and learning to forgive and offer forgiveness will help you learn to live fearlessly.

FUN FALL FASHIONS! Always dress like it’s the best day of your life!

Sister Deb Nelson has taken action in the midst of fear in much of her work, including ministering in Zambia, Africa for several years. CHIC BRAIDS Story, hair and make-up by Chantelle Duncan, Licensed Cosmetologist Photos by Margaret Pennock

R

unning out of hair ideas? Looking for hairstyles that are quick and easy but also scream, “OMG! That is so cute!” Braids are back and they are making appearances on women everywhere. The perfect idea behind braids is that there is no right or wrong way to do them and they can fit in every lifestyle. Do you have a wedding coming up this month and you want more of a classy and soft hair style? Here is an elegant, yet easy, option: Curl your hair with a 1-inch curling iron until your hair is covered with loose curls. Take the front of your hair starting from top and braid your hair. Place the braid on the side of your head and secure with bobby pins until it feels completely secure. Are you attending a family get together outdoors and are looking for a style that will tame your frizz- prone hair? Create this casual look that stays in place no matter the conditions: Create two French braids on each side of your head, then with very little force pull at the sides of the braids making them look full of volume. Braids have always been the hair style of effortless beauty and can be essential when stuck in a hair rut. n

ILLUMINATE YOUR STYLE

A

s part of our mission to empower, strengthen and celebrate women in our communities, Mainstream Boutique is committed to building confidence through fashion. We are proud to partner with style expert George Brescia, author of the book Change Your Clothes, Change Your Life, which explores the direct connection between what you wear and how you feel. George describes his approach as “illuminating each person’s beauty,” putting unique looks together with a passion and enthusiasm that makes what he does seem a little like magic. George does regular red carpet commentary and fashion and trend reporting for CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX. His early career included 25 years working with top names in fashion, from Ralph Lauren to Donna Karan and Tommy Hilfiger. George Brescia is visiting Mainstream Boutique locations across the U.S. to offer individual styling sessions to customers. He will be at our Lake Lorraine Mainstream Boutique at Marion Road on Sept. 12 and our Dawley Farms location at Highline Place on Sept. 13. Here are a few style tips from George: LONGER LEGS, ANYONE? A pair of heels in a nude color will create the illusion of longer legs. Who doesn’t want that? WEAR JEANS THAT FIT. A great pair of jeans that fit will sculpt your leg, especially those that feature a little stretch. EYE COLOR. HAIR COLOR. SKIN TONE. The goal is to choose clothing that illuminates your natural beauty. TRY A MONOCHROMATIC LOOK. Tone on tone is great any time of year. WHAT ABOUT BLACK? Black is such a standby that people love but it’s not an easy color to wear. YOU LOOK AMAZING. The goal is to have people say, “You look amazing in that dress,” instead of “That dress is amazing.” If it looks great on the hanger but not on you, who cares? n

STREET Styles Where Fashion and Creativity Meet By Brianna Venekamp Imagery by Reistroffer Design

W

hen fashion designers showcase their new lines in New York, Paris and Milan, it is easy to picture these events as the pinnacle of the fashion world. In reality, they are just the beginning.

The events live on through people who have a passion for fashion and love to show it off. Those of us who take the trends we see on the runway and create our own street style. VIBRANT COLORS Gone are the days where summer is the only season for color. Case in point with Pantone’s color of the year for 2018: Ultra Violet. This vibrant hue looks amazing on everyone and will turn heads everywhere you go. PASTELS AND WILDFLOWERS In 2018, Easter-egg hues, from powder blue to chiffon yellow and Creamsicle orange, are everywhere, even as weather begins to chill. Like pastels, florals are no longer reserved only for spring. The current street style encourages super-vivid, graphic and even neon prints. As the weather gets grayer, florals should get brighter. STATEMENT SUITS Draw attention and project power—the two requirements of the statement suit. There are several ways to wear this trend. Vibrant, allone color blazer and pants, eye-catching animal prints, or the subtle style of splitting the suit and just wearing either the blazer or pants. RUFFLE DRESSES If a statement suit is too intense for your tastes, try a ruffle dress instead! The trend is perfect for ladies who like a feminine aesthetic. To wear the look, select a short or long dress in a lightweight fabric and loose silhouette. Street styles can be any variation of these themes. What looks will you create? n

any people are only keeping their automobiles for about three to four years. This trend results in more consumers considering a vehicle lease rather than a purchase. In addition, there is a growing number of drivers whose transportation needs, habits and expectations may differ from buyers who purchase an automobile with the intent of keeping it for a longer time period. Dealerships have responded to the desires of these customers by offering a wide array of new vehicle leasing opportunities to meet a variety of budget and lifestyle needs. In many instances, leasing might be the least expensive way to drive a new vehicle. Kevin Rost, new vehicle Manager for Sioux Falls Ford has seen how far the automotive lease has come in the last twenty years. “The great benefit of a lease is that customers are able to drive larger or higher quality vehicles for substantially less. In some cases, the payment is half or even less than half what a buyer would pay.” Pair that with the fact that the warranty covers most of the repair work performed during the lease, and leasing is often worth strong consideration. According to Luxury Auto Mall of Sioux Falls general sales manager James Hueners, “What makes a lease attractive is the combination of the interest rate and the residual value of the vehicle at the end of the agreement.” Every lease contract is different, and dealership may be able to suggest special factory offers at various times during the year.

Those in the market for a new vehicle have a few things to consider regarding a lease. These include the size of their down payment, the amount of their lease payment which includes their interest rate, how many miles they will be allowed to drive during the lease, and the vehicle’s expected residual value at the end of the lease. To best navigate the world of vehicle leasing, Hueners advises, “Sales staff will help customers determine their driving habits, budget and vehicle needs to find the best option available to them.” n

he trend toward finding natural alternatives to replace beauty products made with harsh chemicals has led to a renewed interest to look no further than your kitchen. The following foods are worth adding to your beauty regime for a fraction of the price of most traditional products. And the best part is that most of these foods can be easily found in your local grocery or general department store! LEMONS

• Combat oily skin and blackheads by applying juice at night but avoid the sunlight the next day. • Light up your hair with lemon juice – just spray on and get some sun for beautiful and natural enhancements. • Strengthen and whiten your nails by combining juice with olive oil.

BAKING SODA • Brighten those pearly whites by mixing one tablespoon of baking soda and five drops of hydrogen peroxide into a paste then brush it onto your teeth and let it sit for five minutes. Brush it off with regular toothpaste and repeat once a week. • Revive your locks by adding a bit of baking soda to your shampoo to remove product buildup. Don’t do this more than once a week. • Pamper your body by mixing equal parts baking soda and Epsom salt and a dash of your favorite essential oil for a spa-like bathing experience. COCONUT OIL • Take a pea sized amount of coconut oil to effortlessly and gently clean off your makeup, including waterproof versions! Just use warm water to wash it off. Enjoy a hydrated and dewy result. • Apply coconut oil to your hands at night to keep them looking youthful and strengthen your fingernails. • Apply coconut oil to your feet to keep dry spots at bay and skin soft and smooth. RAW HONEY • Slather some on your face for an amazing honey mask straight out of the container. Yes, it’s thick and sticky but it’s also a naturally antibacterial due to its low pH which helps combat acne and inflammation. Leave on for at least a minute or two or up to half an hour if you have the time. • Add a few drops of honey to your moisturizer to help lock in the moisture for super hydrated and plumped skin. • Zap your zits by dabbing on honey and letting it sit for 15 minutes. Simply wash it off with warm water. n

BEST SMOOTHIES Recipes & photos by Ashley Sornsin

W

hen it comes to the best smoothies, sometimes the best things in life are the simple things. Finding a smoothie base that you love allows you to mix and match other add-in ingredients, which results in an abundance of smoothie options. Below are two of the best smoothies, kept simple so you have more time to focus on the really important things in life. These simple go-to smoothie recipes will keep your body nourished so you can live your best and healthiest life!

Dreamy Green Smoothie Just 5 ingredients in this creamy, dreamy green smoothie. This is the ultimate green smoothie for those who are hesitant about green smoothies. Using frozen banana as a base is a favorite, because it creates a creamy texture and is naturally sweet. The avocado adds an even creamier texture, while providing healthy fats and bone strengthening minerals. The spinach is an easy add-in and goes undetected, so it’s a great way to sneak in extra veggies. Adding a plant based protein powder keeps this easy to digest, while making it a complete meal. Perfect smoothie for a quick on-the-go breakfast! Recipe (serves 1) • ½ large banana, frozen • ¼ avocado • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (vegan/plant based) • ½ cup spinach (about a handful) • ½ cup coconut milk (or other non-dairy milk) *Ideas for add-ins: cucumber, arugula, celery, pear, kiwi, green apple, frozen pineapple or mango, matcha green tea powder, spirulina powder, pumpkin seeds Directions: 1. Add all ingredients into a high-speed blender. 2. Blend until creamy and smooth (if too thick, add more nondairy milk and if too thin, add ice). 3. Add more banana or avocado for creaminess; add more spinach for deeper green hue; add 1-2 dates if you need it a little sweeter. 4. Add any other add-ins and top with any toppings you desire.

Chocolate PB Cup Smoothie This smoothie is definitely a crowd pleaser and tastes indulgent. Using unsweetened cocoa powder and all natural peanut butter, this indulgent treat stays true to using whole foods that provide the greatest nutrients. A protein boost adds around 20 grams of protein to ensure your sweet tooth is met and you’re completely satisfied. This makes for a great post-workout meal, not only from adding protein powder, but the oats provide the perfect ratio of carbohydrates your body needs to restore. This smoothie is motivation enough to complete your workout. Don’t give up chocolate and peanut butter, just eat them in a way your body can actually use! Recipe (serves 1) • ½ large banana, frozen • 1 Tbsp natural peanut butter (or almond butter) • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (vegan/plant based) • ¼ cup oats • ½ cup ice • ½ cup coconut milk (or other non-dairy milk) *Ideas for add-ins/toppings: unsweetened coconut, cocoa nibs, 1-2 dates, hemp seeds, sliced banana, chopped peanuts, almond butter, oat bran, strawberries

YOUR MONEY: BUDGET TO GET AHEAD By Stacey Kracht

S

ara Ramirez with Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Center for Financial Resources gives us three basic steps to creating and sticking to a budget.

1. LOOKING BACK: Before creating a budget, it is helpful to know how much is currently being spent so proper allocations can be made to each spending category. If you put together a nicely balanced budget that only allows $50 a month for groceries, it is only going to last about a week before you run out of grocery money. To avoid this, track how much you are spending by looking back at bank statements or writing down all expenses for a few weeks. 2. PLANNING AHEAD: Now that you know how much is needed in each category, you are ready to lay out a spending plan. Because expenses change from month to month, a spending plan needs to be created for each month. For example, in July, you might ensure the budget has a line item for fireworks, but that’s the only month you have that expense. Your utilities could also fluctuate depending on the time of year. When laying out a spending plan, income minus expenses should

54

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2018

equal $0. That may sound strange, but if you have money left over, you should decide before the month starts where you want that money to go. How many times have you told yourself you will save whatever is left over, but when you get to the end of the month, there is nothing left? You work hard for each dollar you make – now make each dollar work just as hard for you! 3. STAYING THE COURSE: It’s easy to have the numbers on paper, but making them work in real life is a lot more difficult. Tracking what you are spending will make you aware of what you have left as the month goes by. Just a few examples of ways to do this include using an app, keeping receipts, or putting cash in separate envelopes. There is no right way; the only right way is the way you will stick to it. These steps should help make budgeting as easy as 1, 2, 3… but if you try it out and struggle, you should never be afraid to reach out for help! Call the financial counselors at LSS (1-888-258-2227) for help establishing a system that works for you. n

INVESTING 101: Increase your Portfolio and Your Financial Literacy By Jill Funke

O

nce a person feels secure with their ability to manage their personal finances, it might be time to consider the realm of investing. The great news is that the option of investing is not only afforded to the extremely wealthy. The same principles of compounding interest apply regardless of the size of the investment. Experts advise that long-term investments are dramatically more financially beneficial than standard savings accounts that earn very little interest. Howard Group of Baird senior vice president and financial advisor Mary Howard, and Megan Howard, financial advisor, educate people on their approach to investing. They use a ‘Buckets of Money’ diversification strategy in which each ‘bucket’ contains different accounts that play different roles in investment/asset portfolios. Bucket #1 contains checking and savings accounts, as well as other income accounts such as Social Security and pensions. Funds from these accounts are considered short term as will likely be utilized in the near future. Many of these asset accounts are liquid, which means they can be converted into cash quickly. While Bucket #1 short-term accounts, Bucket #3 is reserved for long-term accounts including IRA’s and 401(k)’s. Characterized as qualified monies, these accounts are not taxed for gains until they are utilized during retirement. In many cases, the funds from these types of accounts are invested in higher risk opportunities with the hope that the length of the investment helps buffer potential market volatility to realize substantial gains in the end. Megan Howard has additional advice for older investors who are focusing on retirement. “When savings accounts have been secured and IRA & 401(k) contributions are at the maximum, those who are over the age of 50 can add another $1,000 in their IRA and up to an additional $6,000 to their 401(k). This is where we strategize with the investor to help determine where to save and invest next.”

56

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2018

Investments grouped into Bucket #2 include moderate risk accounts. These investments realize better yields than savings accounts, yet any yearly gains are taxable. Moderate risk investments are appealing to those who are not in a position to dedicate funds for long-term durations such as those in Bucket #3. Retirees often opt for these investments to provide cash flow to help ease the tax burdens from their retirement investments. Megan Howard feels that the best method of contributing to moderate risk accounts is automatic installments. “Putting contributions on autopilot is one of the easiest saving techniques. Automatically increasing the retirement contribution every year by 1-2%, or scheduling automatic bank transfers requires no continued effort, and the investor is making great strides toward building wealth.” When considering how to navigate the world of investing, financial experts advise investors to buy into what they understand and personally believe in. Many investors enlist the services of financial advisors to help them determine which opportunities would best fit their financial goals. In addition to their experience with a multitude of investment accounts, financial advisors can also provide impartial advice that takes into consideration the investor’s financial situation. According the Megan Howard, “Most of our clients rely on Mary and I to help make educated, non-emotional decisions regarding investments and management styles to use.” She continues, “It’s important to find a comfortable fit with a financial advisor, as you need to trust them while they assist you in making important decisions for your financial future.” n

SIMPLY PERFECTION Sophistication and Glamour Team Up in Timeless Masterpiece

hether it’s the grand foyer with striking details or the elegant master bedroom with layers of velvet and linen custom bedding, this stately ranch-style home located in the heart of Sioux Falls has been fully remodeled and given new life. Originally built in the 1990s, the current homeowners have lived in this classic creation for three years and have tirelessly worked to design a home that fits their taste and lifestyle. Teaming up with general contractor Buck Sturnberg, owner of Buck Sturnberg Construction, the homeowner pulled from her own two decades of experience working in interior design to blend existing furniture into a crisp and classic look. And with a little help from co-workers at Simply Perfect, where she has worked as a design consultant for the past five years, this design savvy homeowner’s passion and experience truly shines. An oversized octagon-shaped foyer greets with grandeur with its white oak floors stained in an ashy, ebony hue and rich, gray walls that complement the crisp, creamy trim. Dual doorways with sidelights and arch-top transom windows allow for ample sunlight to flow into the space. During the darker hours, the sky-high vaulted ceiling and unique, orb-shaped crystal chandelier keep this open area bright while adding drama from both inside and out. A dark pedestal table finished off with oversized accessories, glistening wall décor and velour tufted bench complete the pass-through room and offers a hint of what’s to come.

Leading into the formal dining, a quaint sitting area is filled with monochromatic tones of cream and grey with hints of metallic silver and gold. A large window is left simply unadorned to showcase the architectural details. Meanwhile, casual fabrics provide a relaxed, contemporary feel that’s enhanced with elegant pillows and accessories. With all eyes gazing ahead at the dramatic formal dining room chandelier from Simply Perfect, the elongated room is transformed for a completely different function yet features similar beauty. A large dining room table is surrounded by tufted grey high back chairs for softness and texture. Mixing metals with the contemporary yet classic design once again lends a unique finishing touch that is inherent with the homeowner’s personal style. A mirrored sideboard is given whimsy with wall décor and tabletop accessories.

French doors lead into a spacious kitchen custom built for family living and entertaining. The white kitchen concept, a personal love for the homeowner, was a true design success with its endless stone countertops and creamy white cabinets from Dakota Kitchen and Bath, Inc. A large center island is painted a light grey hue and capped off with granite countertops from Milliron Granite & Quartz and recessed sink and stainless steel faucets coordinate with the appliances from Mahlander’s Inc. Large, mercury glass pendants dangle above and add warmth to the cool tones. Meanwhile, a custom range hood and grey subway tile backsplash from Syverson Tile & Stone showcase the contrasting tones seen throughout. A family favorite for entertaining is the beverage center which includes ample countertop space, an icemaker, wine rack and tempered, glass-front cabinets ideal for storing glassware. Taking a rustic twist, the informal dining area is whimsical with fun accessories, distressed wood pieces and a unique checkerboard vinyl floor mat to break up the white oak floors. The finishing touch is the breathtaking crystal drum chandelier, also from Simply Perfect. A hammered metal tabletop is complete with French cane back chairs.

Completing the spacious kitchen and dining area is a family room that invites relaxation with soft upholstery and a custom media wall that includes a cozy fireplace from Fireplace Professionals and flat screen television flanked with inbuilt custom bench seats. With walls painted a stately gauntlet grey hue, the lighter toned ottoman and area rug provide striking dimension. Serving both form and function, symmetrical “his and her” offices are both personal favorites for this family. Taking on masculine, eclectic cues, a dedicated room, which is accessed through French doors off the foyer, is painted dovetail grey and filled with sports-themed wall décor and unique accent pieces such as a corner whiskey barrel to accompany a nostalgic drafting table with coordinating stools which serves as a desk. Open, industrial-style shelving, has a multi purpose by displaying collectibles and providing additional storage. Completing the room are a pair of distressed leather pub style chairs and wrought iron flair light fixture. On a lighter note, the pass-through master sitting room 64

is often referred to as a computer area and takes on a feminine feel with dual creamy white wingback pewter nailhead chairs and elegant round, velour tufted ottoman. Hints of black, as seen in the elegant desk, anchor the space and add depth to the creamy contemporary area rug. Wood floors continue throughout and a span of windows overlooking the courtyard provides the right touch of natural beauty. Just a short distance away, an oasis of elegance and relaxation lie waiting. A stately four-poster bed offers the perfect architectural detailing to offset the layers of rich fabrics in various textures while not straying from the monochromatic tones needed to achieve a traditional, contemporary style. Custom designed by Simply Perfect, the bedding is a homeowner’s favorite for its layers of luxury and decadence. An overstuffed sofa at the foot of the bed adds comfort and style with metallic pillows, while a one-of-a-kind drum chandelier with dangling square crystals gives off a shattered glass feel that is the perfect finishing touch.

HOUSE NUMBER PLANTER Story & photos by Emily Olson

H

ouse numbers are often overlooked when it comes to creating curb appeal. Take standard numbers to a new level by incorporating them into a sign with a mounted planter, providing fun and function. This simple, inexpensive project will add instant character to the front of your home. Succulents are a perfect option for filling the planter during warmer weather due to their minimal maintenance and a variety of faux seasonal stems can be used throughout the year to create a welcoming entrance. These instructions are for the actual planter shown here, but options for customization in wood type, size and design can easily be adjusted for what works best for your exterior space. STEPS: 1. Create the “sign plate” by aligning all three 1 x 6 boards and connecting them together by affixing the ¼ x 4 poplar boards on the backside with wood glue and nailer. 2. Build the “planter box” by nailing the 1 x 4 x 12 board as the front piece to the two 1 x 4 x 3.5 boards as the sides. Next, nail the 1 x 4 x 9.5 board inside the box to form the bottom. 3. Attach the planter box to the sign plate by nailing from the back side of the sign plate. 4. If the planter will be used for real plants, or if it is not protected from rain or snow, drill a few holes on the bottom of the planter box for drainage. 5. Stain to your preference and seal with an all-weather sealant. 6. Affix house numbers. 7. Add desired foliage.

BACK TO SEASONAL ALLERGIES Get Educated Before the Bell Rings By Jennifer Dumke

It’s back to school time, which can also mean back to seasonal allergies. While frustrating and painful, the fall season bears predictable triggers even in new surroundings. As your child heads back to school or moves into college housing, don’t forget to take allergens into consideration. A new homeroom or even dormitory may display new allergens. Turn over a new leaf and stay ahead of painful inflamed sinuses, itchy eyes and repeated sneezing with these tried and true tips. No matter where you live, fall is notorious for ragweed pollen. This air-born culprit can cause sufferers to experience a simple stuffy nose to more severe cases such as difficulty breathing.

72

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2018

Although there are some areas more prominent to carry ragweed pollen, a bit of planning can provide peace-of-mind. Before the heading to homeroom or tackling move-in day, ensure your child has the proper medication and tour new living areas and classrooms ahead of time. Many times, parents can identify potential allergy triggers. For younger children, parents and caregivers are even advised to discuss your child’s condition with teachers, coaches and school personnel to ensure a proper treatment plan is in place. One of the easiest ways to keep allergies at bay is avoidance. However, new living conditions and spaces make this a challenge. For private, controlled areas, such as dorm rooms, keep windows closed. Even though fresh air is a good thing, when it carries dangerous triggers it’s advised to close things up. Also, take fabrics and carpet into consideration. While these soft surfaces seem to add comfort, they also attract and hold on to dust mites. Advise your child to wash bedding weekly using hot water to kill mites and their eggs. For living areas with wall-to-wall carpet, invest in a high-quality vacuum with a filter and change it weekly to keep indoor allergens to a minimum. Although these allergy-reducing cleaning tips may be a challenge for college age students, it may mean the difference between having a fun college experience or being wrought with painful allergies. One of the most important things a parent or caregiver can do to prevent and properly treat seasonal allergies when heading back to school is getting educated themselves. The more you know about your child’s environment, both inside and out, is key to optimal learning and overall improved quality of life. n

HAND SPECIALIST SEEING MORE PATIENTS WITH “AVOCADO HAND” By Lisa Peterson | Photo by Greg Giesky

A

fruit well-known for its healthy fats has been getting a bad rap lately. Avocados with their leathery skin and sizable pit can ruin hands for some people who mishandle the fruit, causing a multitude of slash and/or stab wounds. Injuries connected with avocados are so common there’s a name for them—avovado hand—and there’s even a hashtag: #avocadohand. The rise in injuries stem from the avocado’s rise in popularity. Since 2002, consumption of the fruit has increased by 250 percent. The Q&A below was with one of the region’s top hand specialists, Orthopedic Institute surgeon Dr. David Jones. His answers cover the proper way to cut an avocado and what to do if you cut yourself. Q. Have you seen an increase in your clinic of patients with avocado hand? A. Yes, unfortunately it’s not rare to see individuals with significant cuts to their hand or fingers from carelessly cutting avocados.

74

SiouxFallsWoman.net | August/September 2018

Q. What is the proper way to safely cut an avocado? A. Avoid holding the avocado while cutting toward your hand. Keep the avocado on the cutting board, keep your fingers clear and rotate the avocado while cutting it. Think about where the knife will plunge if it slips. Use a medium-sized sharp knife so you don’t have to press hard to cut the avocado. Avoid stabbing the pit to remove it. Quarter the avocado then remove the pit with a spoon.

NEW FALL DECOR ARRIVING WEEKLY!

Q. If you find yourself with a nasty cut, what should you do? A. Hold pressure to control the bleeding. The hand has a robust blood supply so bleeding can be dramatic. Wash the hand with soap and water and apply a Band-Aid or gauze wrap. If the cut extends through the skin you should seek medical attention.

Q. How can I tell if I should go to the ER or wait and make an appointment with you? A. If there’s difficulty controlling the bleeding or if the fingertip is white and does not turn pink after pressing on it, seek immediate care in the ER. Otherwise, if the finger has good blood flow and the bleeding is controlled, seek care in an urgent care or walk-in clinic. A common problem we see with these injuries is a cut appearing relatively minor on the surface can damage major structures like nerve, arteries and tendons which are just beneath the skin. So the cut gets neglected and there’s delay in recognizing that one of the deeper structures has been injured, which makes the repair and recovery much more difficult. If you cut your hand or fingers, make sure you can feel light touch along both sides of the fingertips and bend each knuckle of the cut finger. If there’s any doubt, it’s better to be evaluated sooner than later so if surgery is necessary, it can be done in a timely fashion. n

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT GENETIC TESTS PREDICTING BREAST CANCER If you could stop breast cancer before you were even diagnosed, should you? The answer is more complicated than you may think.

By Cassie Hajek, M.D., Sanford Health

A

few years ago, actress Angelina Jolie wrote an article for the New York Times about getting genetic testing and, as a result, a double mastectomy.

Based on her family’s history with cancer and genetic tests showing she carried a mutation in a gene called BRCA1, Jolie statistically had a higher chance of developing breast cancer. She had what’s called a prophylactic mastectomy, which means she had her breasts removed before being diagnosed with breast cancer. After this well-known celebrity talked openly about genetic testing and preventive cancer treatments, many providers— including ones at Sanford Health—said they had more patients asking about prophylactic measures and tests for BRCA1 and BRCA2 were higher than average. Genetic tests aren’t just for the rich and famous—they’re becoming more accessible every day. The information they

provide and what you should do with it is not always black and white. There’s a lot to consider, and to discuss with your provider, about your concerns with breast cancer. BREAST CANCER’S GENETIC LINK Genetic research has found several genes that when mutated can increase the risk for breast cancer. The two most common are BRCA1 and BRCA2. People with mutations in these genes are at a higher risk of developing breast or ovarian cancer in their lifetimes. The direct link between BRCA1 and BRCA2 and breast cancer was discovered in 1994 and 1995. At the time the link was discovered, a company patented the testing of these genes. But in 2013, the same year Jolie published her article, the patent was reversed. With this reversal, other companies could offer testing for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes.

HURDLES FOR GENETIC TESTING For years, many insurance companies denied coverage of genetic testing. As technology and research advance, though, more insurance companies are beginning to cover all or part of the cost of genetic testing for things like the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Even out of pocket, testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2 is not nearly as expensive as it once was. Still, the cost of the test can be prohibitive for some women. Some patients are opting to cover the cost themselves to have the information to discuss with their providers. Some direct-to-consumer genetic tests are emerging as well, but these offer even more limitations in what they can and can’t tell you. For example, a 23andMe test has BRCA1 and BRCA2 indicators—but it doesn’t test the genes entirely. It can only identify three specific variants in the genes, which are only slightly more prevalent in a very small number of people in a very specific population.

WHEN TO CONSIDER A GENETIC TEST FOR BREAST CANCER

339-2241

While mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can indicate a person’s breast cancer risk, it’s important to note that only about 10 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses are hereditary breast cancer.

While regular screenings and discussions with health care professionals remain the best course of action for many women, some may benefit from genetic testing. Your family history is the number one predictor of your risk of developing breast cancer. Some factors that may indicate you have a hereditary risk of developing breast cancer include:

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’RE WORRIED ABOUT BREAST CANCER Having access to more information about your breast cancer risk can feel reassuring, or terrifying, or both. If you’re concerned, make sure to discuss it with your provider or another health care professional. • Be specific about what you’re concerned about. • Are you having symptoms that worry you? • Has a family member been recently diagnosed? • Did you go down a rabbit hole of Internet articles? • Your provider can address your specific concerns, and talk with you about the next best step. • Your health and your peace of mind are our top priority. n

INNOVATIVE TEST HELPS AVOID UNNECESSARY BIOPSIES By Jarett C. Bies, Avera Health

W

hen it comes to finding and fighting breast cancer, Avera clinicians have a new tool at their disposal – an innovative blood test that can help avoid biopsies after an abnormal mammogram.

to contribute to the effort,” said Alpers. “For patients, it’s simply a blood draw. But for our clinical teams, especially in our laboratory, there are vigorous processes and controls in place in order to make the test effective.”

“Videssa® Breast truly is changing the way we approach diagnosis, especially with a population of high risk patients who may have challenging mammograms or images,” said Josie Alpers, MD, radiologist and Director of Mammography at Avera Breast Center. “As doctors, we have only so many cards to play in diagnosing breast cancer. This test adds another important tool that will, over time, prove to be invaluable.”

Proteins in the blood will begin break down when exposed to room-temperature conditions. Videssa Breast only works when lab technicians who receive and test the samples do so under rigorous guidelines.

Videssa Breast is a blood test that can detect the presence of certain proteins and antibodies that often signal that a patient has cancer. Alpers served as the primary investigator of Videssa research at Avera for the past five years. “It started as a research opportunity at certain cancer centers in the United States. We had the second-highest number of patients in the nation, people who were willing 78

“There are very specific instructions and protocols that have to be followed in order for a cancer center to be a part of this national program,” Alpers said. “Our laboratory teams were able to meet and exceed them. It’s very specific and it must be in order for the test to provide accurate information.” WHO IT CAN HELP Some breast cancer patients are considered high risk for the disease. Others have dense breast tissue, or dense nodular tissue, that can result in inconclusive mammograms.

“We have ultrasound, mammography, contrast-enhanced spectral mammography and MRI as potential screening imaging tools,” said Alpers. “In many cases, these options provide us what’s needed. But there are cases when these approaches will not be enough. Videssa Breast is another option to benefit patients in this unique subpopulation.”

HOW IT CAN HELP

AseraCare - Sioux Falls 528 N. Sycamore Ave.

The Videssa Breast test costs less than exams like MRI, and it serves as a means to reduce the number of biopsies. Any biopsy can have risk, as well as emotional and physical discomfort. If a doctor had a patient with multiple undetermined lesions found on a traditional mammogram, one or two would be examined via biopsy testing.

“We are able to determine if the cancerindicating protein or antibodies are in the blood. If they are, we can schedule a biopsy,” Alpers said. “If they are not, then we can continue to monitor the patient and avoid biopsy surgery.”

HORMONES IN BALANCE? The Only Way to Know is to Test Them.

The test can offer convenience for women with pacemakers or other implanted medical devices that would make MRI impossible. In most cases, it also offers peace of mind because Videssa is nearly 99 percent effective in ruling out breast cancer. “When we say ‘Come see us in six months’ – that can be really hard for many women, but if Videssa shows the proteins are not present, patients can be confident that they are not facing cancer,” she said. “This approach also allows physicians a way to monitor changes in ongoing treatment.” Avera Cancer Institute was among the first five cancer centers in the United States to implement Videssa. Due to the strict guidelines with samples, the test currently is only offered in Sioux Falls.

Simple, Accurate and Meaningful Tests

HORMONE IMBALANCE AFFECTS: • 80% of women with menopause symptoms • 40% of men with andropause symptoms • 80% of adults with adrenal dysfunction • 28% of unexplained infertility cases • 2 out of 3 people with signs of depression • Most risk factors for breast cancer

Alpers said the test’s ongoing role in cancer care will continue to evolve. “When we found out it was part of the federal government’s Cancer Moonshot efforts, we were pleased. That prominence is important,” she said. “It’s an honor to develop an ongoing research program that will become more and more routine and help those who need it.” n

LIVING IN THE MOMENT Holly Van Hofwegen Finds the Good in Life and Lives to Share the Joy Every Day By Margaret Pennock | Photos by Kirby Schultz

H

olly van Hofwegen, DDS is strong, kind, brilliant, spiritually devout, fearless and most of all, happy. Leading her practice van Hofwegen Dental in Sioux Falls, she is a member of the International Academy of Facial Aesthetics, Academy of General Dentistry, DOCS Sedation, American Orthodontic Society, the South Dakota Dental Association and The Luke Society. She is also the proud mother of a precious four-year-old daughter she adopted from Ethiopia, as well as a cancer survivor. A self-professed daddy’s girl, Holly’s life has mirrored her father’s in many ways. Following in his footsteps, she has served in the United States Air Force as well as becoming a Doctor of Dental Surgery and committing herself to missionary work providing dental care to the needy. But she has also carved her own path as an independent woman who loves life and strives to share it with others. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Holly’s family moved four times from Iowa to California and back again by the time she was in the fifth grade. Staying put for the remainder of her youth in Spencer, she excelled in school as well as sports earning a full-ride volleyball scholarship to the University of Northern Iowa (UNI). It was an experience that taught her how to follow, how to lead and most importantly how to excel as a teammate. Holly shares, “When you join a new team as the most junior member you go through stages of being the follower then work your way up to becoming the leader. It’s then you come to understand the best kind of leader is the kind that incorporates teamwork. I’ve been able to implement that a lot into my practice. It was an invaluable experience for me.”

After completing her undergraduate degree in Biology and Chemistry at UNI, Holly continued on to the College of Dentistry at the University of Iowa. It was then that she joined the Air Force through the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP), which paid for the majority of her school in return for her service. She notes, “Dental school was outstanding and I was pleasantly surprised at the education I had received there. Following graduation, I was commissioned as an Air Force officer.” Holly served Airmen and their families for three years at Seymour Johnson Air Force base in Goldsborough, North Carolina providing dental care and gaining incredible experience. “I loved serving in the military because the camaraderie was great. I enjoyed the structure of it and I really made a lot of great friends. I was able to experience a lot of different things and the professional experience was fantastic. You see lots of different types of procedures and different personality types.” Following her active duty service, Holly relocated to Sioux Falls. She shares, “It was really nice to come back to the Midwest culture. My parents live in Spencer still and it’s nice that they are so close.” Throughout this time, Holly had developed a passion for mission work and traveled at least once a year to foreign countries including Bolivia, Honduras and Haiti to provide dental care to the needy. It was on a trip to Haiti while visiting children in an orphanage that made her consider adoption. “The children were filthy and they had such sad eyes. It was such a sad state of life for them. When we were leaving I was convinced that adoption was something I wanted to do.” Following up with an agency after returning home, Holly spent the next two and a half years waiting to adopt while at the same time making the decision to purchase and transition from partner to sole owner of her dental clinic. Unbelievably, it was at this time that Holly was diagnosed with breast cancer. “It was a bit overwhelming that everything was happening at the same time, but I got through it. I have very good friends that have helped me throughout the years as well as an amazing staff and team at my office.”

“I think I’m passionate about serving others because it’s the way I was raised. I think when you see a need, it’s nice to be used in an instrumental way to alleviate pain and discomfort. It’s so important for people to trust you because you can touch them so deeply and the trickle effect is incredible. It’s an amazing feeling to affect people in such a positive, tactile way.” – Holly van Hofwegen

She approached her illness with a practicality that was absolutely astonishing; having surgery on Wednesday and returning to work Monday. “I didn’t have time to take off. I had six weeks of radiation therapy that I did over my lunch hour. I would get home from work and take a nap because radiation really zaps you. Mostly it was pretty good and I handled it fine, I think. When you don’t have a choice you just do it.” Today, she has a clean bill of health and is incredibly thankful for it. “I caught it early and fortunately I had surgery and radiation which was a relatively easy treatment.” All the while she waited and pushed to move the adoption along. Finally, after a personal visit to Ethiopia progress was finally made. “I flew to Ethiopia to pick up my daughter Noemi and we came back March 17, 2017. It was the longest day of my life! We were stuck in Chicago with a five-hour delay and she didn’t speak any English and I speak a few words of her language. She was three and a half and I was alone. Of course she was scared, very quiet and we couldn’t communicate.” Today, Noemi is a happy, well-adjusted and loving little girl and Holly has hit her stride, adding mom to her list of blessings. “She’s the most well-adjusted, resilient human being I know. Her attachment was really fast and we had some things to work through, including lots of health things, but she was really pleasant, very happy and very playful. She’s so easy, you’d never know she’s only been here a year.” Not worried about looking toward the future, Holly is satisfied with living life to the fullest today. “I like to live in the moment. I do think of the future and I am thinking of starting another adoption, and of course I would like to be able to retire and travel and enjoy life and people, but I love today because life is great.” n

ooking your best not only boosts selfesteem, it also builds confidence and personal happiness. For Deb Vogel, image consultant, the ability to share that with others has been a life changing experience. She operates House of Colour, a UK-based company that is the leading global color and personal style consultancy in the world; a move she made after experiencing it for herself. “When I went for my Color Analysis, I was intrigued by the color science of the process. I had no idea how much the undertones react with the colors we wear. The wrong colors really do age us, and your best colors can make you look younger and healthier. I wish I would have known this when I was 20!” Deb shares, “Clients can expect a detailed, thorough process, and knowledge that they will use every day when they get dressed for the rest of their lives. Our color system is based on Itten’s 12-point color wheel, which is the basis for most paint charts, interior design, and beauticians’ color charts, and sets us apart from other systems.” According to Cinda Kogel of Sioux Falls, “Two of my coworkers and I saw Deb give her House of Colour presentation at a women’s conference this spring. We were intrigued and signed up to have a color consult done. It was a fun and enlightening experience. She spent a lot of time with each of us finding the right colors that made each of us look beautiful. She made me feel lovely in my own skin. What I did not expect was the huge boost in self-confidence that was a result! That has been very energizing!” Deb not only provides a no-fail system to find perfect shades that complement her clients’
