13th Annual “A Butterfly to Remember” Butterflies in Memory of Loved Ones Lost By Virginia Olson | Photos courtesy of AseraCare Hospice

U

nable are the loved to die, for love is immortality. ~ Emily Dickinson

Like poet Emily Dickinson’s poignant words, butterflies have also represented comfort to those who are grieving or who want to remember and to honor loved ones. AseraCare Hospice will be hosting its 13th annual “A Butterfly to Remember” Event, at Sertoma Park Tuesday, June 2 at 5:30 pm. The butterfly release is meant to honor and memorialize loved ones who have died.

18

SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2020

“Butterflies offer a feeling of healing,” says Jessica Selchert, volunteer coordinator. “For hospices across the country, the butterfly has become a symbol of hope and a meaningful representation of life reminding us how fragile it is.” Now in its 13th year, “A Butterfly to Remember” has grown into a community event as it not just honors past patients but also honors anyone who has passed. “Over the years, we have watched as the event has grown in attendance but also that it has become a mix who attends,” she says. “Now the butterfly honors individuals of all ages – some whose lives have just begun and others who were centenarians. Also, in the beginning we released butterflies

to primarily honor fallen veterans. We now see more families who have lost children.”

Doing the Right Things

Family and friends have an opportunity to reserve a butterfly or butterflies in memory of a loved one. “We use painted lady butterflies – one for each individual who is honored,” says Jessica. “The butterfly release has become an event that both kids and adults enjoy.” The day of the event, individuals are given a butterfly in a special envelope. As the name of their loved one is read, the butterfly is released. “Since ‘A Butterfly to Remember’ began, we have been fortunate when it has come to weather,” she says. “You never know what you will end up with on a given day in South Dakota. However, the days when it did rain or storm, the weather miraculously cleared off before the everyone gathered.” Jessica says that over 3000 butterflies have been released over the event’s 12-year history.

DIGNITY - We respect your loved one. It’s our priority. • Offering Special Care situations from Companion care, Alzheimer’s and Dementia care, Hospice, Mental health to 24/7 live in care. • We find the right caregiver for your loved one

Move to Heal South Dakota Non-Profit uses Yoga and Dance to Heal Seniors and Children By Lisa Peterson | Photos courtesy of Move to Heal South Dakota

n a senior living facility in Sioux Falls, the sound of dance music rings out. Anyone peeking their head in the room to see who the dancers are will likely be surprised by the sight. Within the walls of a community room are a group of seniors moving to the dance beat. This happy scene is occurring more often in senior living facilities and a children’s hospital in Sioux Falls since the new nonprofit, Move to Heal South Dakota, was started last year. Unlike traditional dance and yoga classes that focus on perfecting moves or poses, Move to Heal sessions focus on the pure joy of movement, said founder Sydney Bartunek. “Movement can bring emotional, physical and spiritual healing to a child admitted to the hospital or a senior in a living facility,” she said. “We aim to provide that spark of joy for that day because we know

some children feel isolated while hospitalized and seniors are experiencing the physical pain of aging and loneliness from going to a different setting.” Move to Heal sessions are thirty minutes and are free. People choose from three programs: “Dance to Heal,” “Yoga to Heal” or “Move to Heal,” which is a combination of yoga and dance. Working with both older adults and children, Bartunek’s carefully-designed classes merge the health/fitness benefits of yoga and the expressive language of dance. Bartunek has danced since she was 5 years old and still dances at LiRa Dance Theatre Company in Sioux Falls. The idea for her nonprofit happened after seeing how much music and dance helped lift her dad’s spirits while he was hospitalized. “We listened to a lot of music in his room and my niece and I would dance for him, and it raised the

When she was laid off from her job this summer, Bartunek started getting immersed in what’s offered at local senior facilities and the children’s hospital and while there are lots of activities, there is nothing like what Move to Heal offers she said. “I shared the idea with a few supporters and received great feedback to launch it. We formed a board of directors and a nonprofit, and it’s really taken off.” The nonprofit also fundraises to help

Bartunek has a big vision for the future. “I want to expand our service to seniors across South Dakota and grow our Sanford children’s program to a weekly program. “I’m so passionate about it. It just seems like the possibilities to help are endless and I’m willing to put in the time to get us there.” n

Reaping a Harvest and a Healthy Relationship Tips on How to Tackle Gardening as a Couple By Chellee Unruh

A

healthy marriage is a lot like a garden. The marriage will thrive when it is well cared for but may fall apart when neglected and weeds are allowed to take over. Planning a garden together can be a great way to work on your relationship. With spring at our doorstep and summer around the corner, proper planning and teamwork will allow you and your spouse to your dream garden into a reality. MAKE A PLAN Before you begin to plant your summer garden, it is best to sit down with your partner and discuss how you want your garden to look and what you would like to plant. Decide together who will be in charge of the different garden-related activities. Sharing the tasks helps you ensure that you will have a garden that is well cared for. This same approach can be a great way to conquer other challenges or opportunities that enter your marriage. Being sure that your visions align, making a shared plan and understanding of who is responsible for what task are great building blocks for a healthy relationship. IT’S IMPORTANT TO COMMUNICATE If your garden gets to a condition that you are not happy with, let your 22

SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2020

partner know. Don’t let the state of your garden become obnoxious weeds in your relationship. Talk about the problem you are having and come up with a solution that you are both happy with. Garden planning doesn’t have to be all business, add some fun into your discussions and garden activities. Use it as a way to spend additional quality time together. Take excursions to garden centers to get ideas and pick out the plants you want in your garden together. After your day of shopping and planning reward yourselves with a dinner date and unwind. DIVIDE AND CONQUER If you are opposite ends of the spectrum on what you want in your garden then give each other a section of the garden with the freedom to choose what goes in it without the other person’s input. Decide on clear boundaries so that you don’t step on each other’s soil. As your sections grow, be complimentary of what your spouse has created and try not to be critical. It is ok for each of you to express your individual taste by growing what appeals to you. We reap what we sow, so use these three tips to guide you through building a beautiful garden and healthy marriage. With proper nurturing, you will be able to harvest the fruits of your labor together. n

pring beauty trends always bring fun color to the table!

Pastel colors are in this spring. Fortunately it is a trend that doesn’t require much skill or standing for hours watching youtube and pausing while we practice in front of the mirror. Here are some easy ways to wear eye catching pastels : EYES Apply a very soft nude pink to the top of your eyelids followed by black liner on the upper lash line to add definition. CHEEKS Cool down your skin tone by applying peach undertone blush. With blush less is definitely more.

Beauty LIPS Brighten your lips with a baby doll pink lip gloss. This look brings a natural allure to your mouth while keeping lips hydrated. NAILS Have fun with sugary shades! Try a lilac color base polish and use other pastel colors to make designs on some of your nails.

20-30% DISCOUNT EVERYDAY – NO COUPON REQUIRED! Visit our new location! 1111 W 41ST St, Sioux Falls BetzBlinds.com • 605.357.0057

Wearing pastel colors can complete your look this spring. Whether it’s meeting friends for coffee or a date night, pastel colors are perfect. n

Rejuvenating Bold, Beautiful, Youthful Eyes Turning Back Time is a Possibility By Margaret Pennock | Photos provided by ARTisan Skin & Laser Center

I

t is a well-known fact that the delicate skin surrounding the eyes is the first area where both men and women notice signs of aging. Wrinkles often develop from facial expressions, including smiling and squinting. Compounded with the loss of youthful volume that naturally occurs with aging, it often results in a crepey skin texture, and a hollow, tired appearance. Unfortunately, no matter the amount of high-quality makeup you apply to cover your tired-looking eyes, they typically broadcast your true age loud and clear.

in the process, non-invasive options are a wonderful place to start. It’s easier to play offense than defense in the aging game. Depending on each individual’s current needs and goals, we create a plan of action with options to help achieve those goals to look and feel their best. Both invasive and non-invasive options work synergistically together to create optimal results. Each individual that walks through our doors is educated on their options for care based on their personal needs and concerns.”

The good news is that there are safe, effective options to rejuvenate your youthful, beautiful eyes. Dr. Alison R. Tendler of ART Vision and ARTisan Skin and Laser Center in Sioux Falls has spent many years of practice and extensive hours in training to perfect her skills and abilities with medical procedures that can help reduce the signs of aging. As an ophthalmologist surgeon, one of Dr. Tendler’s many specialties is the rejuvenation of the periorbital region (the area surrounding the eyes) and the surrounding facial tissue.

Dr. Tendler offers multiple options for her patients including the following popular procedures that provide excellent results:

According to Dr. Tendler, “If addressed early enough

• Bilateral Upper Lid Blepharoplasty: Surgical procedure to remove the excess skin and excess orbital fat around the eyelids. •D ermal Filler: Placed under and around the eyes to volumize and rejuvenate the periorbital area. This can help with both volume loss and the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.

• Neuromodulators: Neuromodulators, such as Botox or Dysport, are used to relax the muscles that are responsible for certain facial expressions. This helps to soften the lines that result from the movement of these muscles, allowing the overlying skin to appear smooth and unwrinkled. • ThermiEye: A radiofrequency treatment specifically designed to treat small, delicate areas like those around the eyes; it comfortably heats the deep layers of skin to help rebuild collagen and smooth the skin. • Laser Resurfacing: This works not only on the texture of the surface of the skin, but creates channels deep down into the skin to rebuild collagen and restore volume to this delicate area. Dr. Tendler shares, “Self care is crucial for our physical, emotional and mental well-being. Skin care, specifically, is important because the skin is our largest organ, and our body’s largest barrier against infection. Keeping skin healthy keeps this barrier function strong. In the same way that we take care of our bodies and maintain our health by exercising and eating well, we also need to take care of our skin by making sure we are protecting it from UV exposure, pollution, and repairing the damage from daily wear and tear. Proper skin care provides people with physical benefits such as removing bacteria, rebuilding lost collagen, and brightening and hydrating dry, dull skin. Along with the physical benefits, it offers an emotionally therapeutic sense of relief -- when we look better, we feel better. A sense of pride, a boost of confidence, and the feeling of empowerment are nothing to be ashamed of.”

Art The

of Millinery

By Natalie Slieter Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography Hair & Make-up by Vanessens Salon Model: Anna Von Wald

M

illinery, the art of designing and creating hats, became a profession in the 18th century. Back then, a milliner was viewed as a stylist, but the term millinery today means someone who creates the hat. Shania Fluit’s interest in millinery goes back to when she was just thirteen years old. She read a book on millinery work and immediately ordered a hat block to make pillbox hats for her sister and herself. She took a two-day millinery class in Minneapolis. Taking her art to the next level, Fluit made an investment for wood head blocks and foundation supplies with a loan from her parents. To work off her debt, she cleaned out the hog barns on her parent’s farm. She even studied online with a milliner in Australia. Today, Fluit is a student at the Institute of Design and Technology SD in Sioux Falls. She’s always sketching and coming up with ideas for millinery, and currently working on another collection that will complement a 15-piece apparel collection for her portfolio show at the end of the school year. In January, when she and the IDTSD director attended NYC textile markets, they spent a day with a renowned menswear hat designer. “In the previous century, women would not step out the door without their hat,” Fluit

said. “They wore a fashionable hat to visit friends, or go to church and town. It would be nice to see that tradition come back, especially to go shopping or out for dinner.” Anita Kealey, creative director of IDTSD, shared that Fluit is one of her most dedicated and disciplined students. Along with attending IDTSD, Fluit works as a certified nursing assistant. Kealey tries to engrain in her students to keep track of the costs, time & materials spent when creating any pieces. She’s passionate about ensuring creative individuals are properly compensated for their craft because of the time and quality they put into their creations versus disposable “fast fashion,” which is cheaper and of poorer quality.

THE

DANCE

LINE, INC.

“How do we expect to keep creative people in our state, if we’re not willing to allow them to earn a fair-trade wage?” Kealey said. Fluit is looking forward to bringing some of her collection to the KELOLAND Living Arts & Crafts Show, an opportunity to showcase her talent and allow others to purchase them. Kealey mentors her students to be entrepreneurs and encourages others to support the creative community by purchasing their creations, whether it’s clothing, furniture or art. Boujee on a Budget

By Jessalyn Holsing | Photos by Maggie Sweets Photography

A

The way around this is to know the essentials to "being boujee" and make them your own. This means taking the classiness and leaving the designer behind. Take the essentials, limited pattern to no pattern and accessorize. Ladies, we’re looking at a crisp black off-shoulder shirt and high-waisted denim jeans and a belt, heeled boots, a jacket, and jewelry that makes a subtle statement. Especially gold jewelry, shorter chained necklaces, a basic bracelet or watch around the wrist. Take a hint from your Instagram feed, solid colors and layers are a must! Even a step in the monochrome direction, with plenty of neutrals at your disposal, and everyone you meet will be asking which designer or brand you got your sleek jacket from and imagining a price out of this world. The good news: basics, neutrals, and solids are everywhere. You can shop at any mall or favorite boutique and find exactly what you need. It’s all about pairing the right pieces, making subtle statements instead of being too overt, and the trendy will spill out over the top. Your price tag doesn’t need to skyrocket for the eyebrows of passer-bys to shoot toward the sky. With layers and basics, you’ll have more outfits and combinations at your disposal overall, and you’ll look classy while keeping your wallet happy! n

s a term extrapolated from the well-known socioeconomic word “bourgeoisie,” the fashion term boujee (also seen as bougie) has been tossed around more and more frequently in the past few years, exponentially increasing in popularity as it becomes more and more fashionable to dress in such a style. What does it mean to be boujee, and more importantly, how can one be boujee without the expensive lavishness of the lifestyle? Boujee is, essentially, dressing crisp and classy. Think a fitted blazer, a flashy watch, heeled boots, or even a faux fur jacket. We want to turn heads on the street, to strut our stuff, and feel fabulous while doing so. We’ve always wanted the couture look and feel, but in our experience, couture is pricey.

Sippin’

on Spring

Story & photos by Ashley Sornsin

S

pring is not only in the air, it’s also in a glass! After a long winter, there are several reasons to be sippin’ this spring. Move over hearty vegetables and rich grains, it’s time to welcome brightly colored, crisp and fresh, fruits and vegetables in the form of a refreshing beverage or meal. If you haven’t guessed it yet, I’m talking about smoothies! Smoothies are light and refreshing, even detoxing in a sense, are packed with a ton of nutrition, which is exactly what our body not only needs, but also craves come springtime. Get your blender ready so you can blend away any winter woes by serving up a variety of fruits and veggies to sip on all spring. Smoothies are nutritional powerhouses and pack a punch in each sip. Being able to blend a variety of fruits and vegetables as well as nuts and seeds, each sip is filled with a ton of nutrition, providing your body an assortment of both macro and micronutrients. After a long winter, your body will appreciate the addition of all the vitamins and minerals these ingredients provide. Since smoothies are already in a liquid state the digestive process is a breeze, as your body doesn’t have to breakdown each ingredient in the stomach. They provide plenty of fiber from fruit and whole food nutrition, which helps to keep things in the body moving along. Get

46

SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2020

creative, add plenty of leafy greens (like lettuces and herbs) to provide detoxing power for the body. Again, this is what the body craves this time of year, a healthy dose of fresh produce and plenty of fiber, giving your body a natural cleanse. A smoothie is extremely versatile, not only from the unlimited ingredient combinations you can create, but also because it can be a hearty breakfast or lunch, a healthy snack, or even a dessert! By adding some protein powder, a smoothie can be a complete meal replacement, so this is where it’s fun to get creative and add ingredients. Smoothie bowls are a heartier way to enjoy a smoothie, especially as a meal or dessert, by making it thicker (adding less liquid) and requiring a spoon to consume, then you can add a variety of healthy toppings. Just be mindful when it comes to what you’re putting into and on top of your smoothie. Smoothies are not only nutritionally dense, but can quickly become calorically dense as well (meaning those calories can add up quickly). Say goodbye to winter and hello to spring by serving up and sipping on a refreshing and nutritionally packed smoothie. Your body will appreciate the healthy dose of nutrition and you’ll feel new and refreshed, just like spring, from the inside, out! n

1. C AYENNE PEPPER. Add a little zing to your next coffee with a sprinkle of this spice. Delicious and zesty, it’s a bold taste. though, it contains powerful antiinflammatory plant compounds that may help heart health, boost mood, and help with blood sugar control. 4. DARK CHOCOLATE. Another reason to love chocolate, right? Rich and irresistible, it’s also a superfood. Just add a 2-oz. square of dark chocolate (70% or higher cacao) to your cup; pour hot coffee over it and relax. Dark chocolate is good for your heart, it lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol, lowers blood pressure, reduces risk for stroke, and boosts brain power. And a study in London found that chocolate can even help protect your skin from UV rays. 5. PURE VANILLA EXTRACT. Love coffee creamers but don’t want the sugar or extra calories? Add a few drops of vanilla extract to your next cup for a burst of flavor. Vanilla has been a medicinal food throughout history. It can calm stomach aches, reduce joint pain, relieve anxiety, boost mental performance and mood. It also aids in weight loss with its natural appetitesuppressing qualities. Studies say it even helps cure male impotency. 5. PEPPERMINT OIL. Try adding a few drops to your next pot during brewing. Add sparingly, it can overtake the flavor of your coffee. Used by the ancient Greeks and Romans, it’s still popular today. It’s used as a treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), nausea, digestive issues, and headaches. It relieves stress and anxiety, and it even fights bad breath and germs. So say goodbye to coffee-breath. 7. COCONUT OIL. Stir a spoonful of coconut oil into your morning pot for a shot of healthboosting fat. Fat-packing your coffee with nutrients like coconut oil or coconut milk is the latest trend, and for good reason. It’s high in antioxidants, hikes energy and aids in digestion. It helps with weight loss, helps stop heart disease and high blood pressure, and it may improve memory and brain function. And it tastes sinfully rich! While the list could go on and on, these will get you started. Never settle for a boring cup again; it’s fun to try new flavors with coffee. Becoming More Secure in the SECURE Act By Jill Funke

A

fter three years, the SECURE Act (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement) was passed in December 2019. Retirees will now face changes to their minimum investment withdrawals, how they utilize retirement investment accounts, and the tax liabilities their heirs will face after inheriting their estate. According to Jill Mollner, Wealth Advisor at Cornerstone Financial Solutions, those who have or will be funding retirement accounts should do their homework. “It is important that all investors know how the SECURE Act will impact their retirement accounts. These changes provide an opportunity for tax planning strategies for all ages of investors.” Older investors should note specific changes including the removal of the age limit for IRA contributions, the increase of the age when people begin their required minimum withdrawals, lowered employer liability protection for employment retirement annuity plans,

54

and the discontinuation of the stretch IRA, in which multiple generations enjoyed tax advantages. For younger investors, they may now take up to $10,000 from their 529 plans to repay student loans, and $5,000 from 401 (k) plans can be withdrawn without penalty to be used toward a child’s birth or adoption. Mollner feels that getting acquainted with the financial implications of the SECURE Act is important as she says, “Tax planning has always been an important piece of financial planning, but with the passing of the SECURE Act family tax planning – across generations – is becoming critical.” Those who will be receiving an inheritance should be aware that the beneficiaries of IRA’s will be required to withdraw funds from the account over a decade, instead of a lifetime as previously allowed. Also, income tax will be paid on those withdrawals. To best prepare for the upcoming changes, Mollner advises investors to take the following actions:

Tax planning has always been an important piece of financial planning, but with the passing of the SECURE Act family tax planning – across generations – is becoming critical.

SPRING 20

1. I mmediately review account beneficiaries and trusts that exist. Naming a spouse as a beneficiary can result in available funds throughout their lifetime, and gain another ten years if the residual is inherited by a grandchild. Listing multiple beneficiaries spreads the tax liability over multiple heirs, with each granted ten years to pay off the taxes due. 2. Investors with larger accounts might benefit from withdrawing funds from their IRA under low tax rates, then moving that money into a life insurance policy that in the end could pay more than the IRA and can be passed on taxfree to a beneficiary.

3. Those who have amassed IRA’s totaling approximately one million to five million could consider a schedule for Roth conversions over several years, resulting in a tax-free inheritance for beneficiaries. 4. Those nearing retirement age should know that the SECURE Act delays the required minimum IRA withdrawals until age 72, yet this provides a longer opportunity for Roth conversion, thus resulting in a larger account balance of tax-free funds. Mollner reminds investors that these changes will not only impact soon-to-be retirees, “Younger investors should still carefully consider tapping into retirement funds prior to retirement as they will bear the tax burden early in life. In addition, those interested in a Roth IRA might contemplate investing enough in their 401 (k) to qualify for an employer match, and sock additional funds into a Roth account as they will provide tax-free growth.” n

Federal retirement benefits can be exceptionally complicated. Not only are there multiple programs an employee can fall under, each one has its own set of complex rules that can dramatically impact your future if not handled by someone with extensive knowledge of Federal benefits. According to Wealth Advisor Jill Mollner, “Benefit elections for Federal employees are irrevocable, which means they can’t be changed. It’s important that you work with someone who knows the specifics of the Federal plans and ‘speaks the language’ to help ensure you make the right decisions for you and your family.” A 15-year veteran of the financial services industry who joined Cornerstone Financial Solutions in 2019, Jill has recently undergone the specialized training required to test for the Chartered Federal Employee Benefits ConsultantSM certification. The designation demonstrates extensive knowledge about FERS, CSRS and Special Provisions (LEO, FF, ATC, CBPO, MRT) and means designees can provide answers to your questions about your TSP, FEGLI, and Social Security. According to Jill, the fact that all Cornerstone Wealth Advisors have this certification is important to the financial planning provided to Federal employees. Jill states, “This in-depth level of understanding of federal government plans allows our team to provide the comprehensive service we are known for, including tax strategies, investment management, protection planning, and estate planning along with retirement planning.”

As a Federal employee, you will make many decisions regarding your retirement plan that can have a lasting impact on your future including: WHAT DATE SHOULD I RETIRE? This may sound like a silly question, but as a Federal employee, retiring on the wrong day of the month can literally mean the loss of a month of hard-earned benefits. WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY UNUSED SICK LEAVE? As a Federal employee you can sometimes use unused sick leave to increase your retirement benefits, or you can take it when you leave. Deciding which way to go can have a big impact on your finances in the long run. SHOULD I TAKE THE LIFE-ONLY OR SPOUSAL BENEFIT OPTION? Although each person’s situation is different, many people in the private sector choose the spousal benefit option, and for good reason. But that might not be the right choice for Federal employees because there are a lot of variables to consider. We will work with you to consider your entire situation, including things like other sources of income, your health, the age difference between spouses and more.

Spaces in the Heart Labor of Love Preserves Family Legacy By Jennifer Dumke | Photos by Margaret Pennock

W

hen first entering Traci and Dick Hylland’s newly renovated home, you are immediately taken back by the original and unique Mid-Century Modern architectural features that perfectly blend with natural, organic elements. But if these walls could talk, it would speak volumes. When it was time for Traci’s parents, Dick and Sherry Jameson to move from the home to a more manageable place in 2019, Traci decided to honor her mom’s wishes and have it remain in the family where they could still visit often and enjoy its updated beauty. Designed and constructed in 1978 by her father Dick, a mechanical engineer, Traci adds that “it softened the difficult decision for my mom to move from her home of 42 years. She would always say how much she loved the home her husband built.” Traci took on the exhausting task of renovating and admits to being nervous and reluctant to having her parents see their home being altered. “I was concerned about retaining the original integrity of the home,” she adds. But thanks to Traci’s superior renovating skills teamed with her equally talented mother’s eye for design, the project was a success. “I was relieved and appreciative that my parents were so supportive, encouraging and interested in the most loving way,” adds Traci. “I had already worked with my father on previous renovations so he took a backseat and trusted that I would do a beautiful job updating the home while honoring its defining architectural features.” In the end, Traci’s “fresh design” perspective was a home run for everyone. “I’m pleased with the transition and have never lived in a home that gave me such a soothing, uplifting feeling.” The floating tread stairway finished off with a distressed copper railing serves as a backdrop for a grand twostory foyer complete with a dramatic, original art piece and stunning chandelier. The walls and ceiling showcase custom, tongue and groove wood that Traci refinished in a warm, grey hue.

A commanding copper fireplace anchors the living room and features a sunken area referred to as “the pit.” Traci uses textures, distressed finishes and wall coverings to balance the smooth walls and ceilings. “I used the original copper elements and incorporated bronze, iron and gold for a bit of interest and glamour,” she adds. “My favorite, self-professed metallic color is “gilver,” she says with a smile when describing her use of a gold and silver mix. “I don’t follow strict design rules or labels.” Instead, Traci loves the juxtaposition of cool and warm tones to create a sunny, calm space with a cohesive flow that includes both timeless and trendy materials. This is evident in the formal living room where elongated windows allow a flood of natural sunlight that radiates against the creamy walls. A mix of new, modern furniture and existing pieces add interest while a large, custom sectional and flat screen television ensure function. “I enjoy using transitional and organic pieces,” she adds. Not only does Traci exude talent for design, she installed the mosaic backsplashes, wallcovering and refinished wood and copper elements. She loves the process of doing finishing touches herself yet she credits her “dream team” of friends and family for providing valuable insight along the way. “My mother has a flair for grouping artwork and achieving interest by layering mixed elements. She can ‘see’ color like no other and loves abstract animal elements and artwork for added whimsy and levity,” Traci adds. The duo especially looked forward to “Designing Thursdays” when she and her mom, Sherry, would meet up with her design consultant and friend, Laura Vucurevich at Montgomery’s Furniture. “My designing time with Laura was a Godsend and a much needed break from the hard work and stress of the construction site,” says Traci. And the feelings were mutual. Laura too loved being on the job site and working closely with Traci. “I especially enjoyed getting to do all the small details and being able to see the project from start to finish,” adds Laura. They were often amazed at how much they could accomplish at the end of a design session and how much fun they had in the process. “We loved our ‘aha’ moments when we would find the perfect piece or fabric combination,” Laura adds. And Traci was glad her mom was involved in the design process as she has great taste and an exceptional eye for fabrics, textures and color. Traci says she will benefit from her mom’s talents for years to come and cherishes the special time spent with her on the project. Traci also collaborated with her daughter who is a working attorney and has a design degree. “She provided amazing, on-trend advice.” It was most important to her son to preserve and incorporate past meaningful elements. The adjacent formal dining room showcases a large, live-edge wood table with honed gold legs anchored by a silk, hand-made area rug, custom drapery and a large art piece that is visible

throughout much of the main living area. The original posts and floating copper top cabinets divide the dining and living spaces. Large pane windows allow for amazing views. Traci says the new motorized window treatments that adjust natural sunlight and privacy are a luxury that she really utilizes. The most extensive and visible change is evident in the kitchen and dining area. A wall was removed between the two rooms allowing the cabinets to be reconfigured for a more open and inclusive living environment. The perimeter cabinets stay bright with a warm, off-white finish while the “greige” stained island reflects tones of blue and copper for an immediate calming effect. A circular zinc-top kitchen table adds to the metallic colors while oversized modern art features accenting hues that anchor the walls. A hint of nostalgia is seen in the clear, glass globe pendants that Traci says remind her of growing up in the home. For added convenience, Traci was able to reconfigure the laundry room to also accommodate additional pantry and storage cabinetry as an extension of the kitchen. The main floor powder bath features wallcovering that is reminiscent of the home’s original design but with an updated flair. A statement wall is tiled floor to ceiling with silvery, metallic glass mosaics. A floating wood cabinet with grey marble countertop, white vessel sink and textured glass pendants complete the quaint room. The master suite area is a tranquil oasis and features a unique layout that integrates the master bath, large closet and office space. Her favorite feature is an original cabinet that was repainted, topped with granite and finished with updated decorative knobs on the thirty small drawers. Custom bedding and drapery from Sandy’s Workroom was methodically selected to add the perfect blend of textures and shimmery fabrics in tranquil and calming tones. The pass-through master bath features wood cabinets with marble countertops, a tiled wall with glass mosaics, dual frameless mirrors and champagne faucets. The adjacent sitting room also accommodates Traci’s workspace with neutral wallpaper, built-in desk/cabinet and a custom niche.

Upstairs is an open loft area with additional tongue and grove wood ceilings and walls that expand to the foyer. Comfy custom partner chairs in light tones receive ample natural sunlight from floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking breathtaking views. “My father decided this is his favorite room in the house,” she adds. “He loves to sit comfortably, perched high over the back views.” For a touch of whimsy, an accent wall is covered in vivid teal distressed wallpaper for added color. But the most cherished feature of this loft area is an original curved desk and her father’s framed home plans. “I never imagined that when I would sit next to him as a child, enthralled in watching him draft, that 42 years later I would rely on these very same plans when renovating,” Traci says. “But they proved to be accurate, relevant and an important tool of reference.” As someone familiar with drafting, Traci has an awe and appreciation of the talent and time of the painstakingly drafted plans her father drew and is grateful they were preserved. Described as a home ahead of its time, the unique design was even affectionately dubbed the “George Jetson” house because of all the modern elements. “The engineer in him incorporated gadgets like a built-in blender and toaster in the kitchen and mounted hand dryer in the master bath,” adds Traci.

The lower level includes a “playroom” and three bedrooms, one of which is converted as husband Dick’s home office. The unique wallcovering provides the focus backdrop for the pool table and wet bar/seating area. After struggling to find art for above her sectional, Traci produced her own grouping of original art aptly named “Always Behind the 8 Ball.” “It’s still a work in progress because I’m never quite satisfied,” Traci adds. Her husband Dick’s home office is anchored by an oversized rustic desk and soft grey/blue executive chair surrounded by wallcovering in Mid-Century modern geometric design. Her dad’s original office art just happened to work well with the design. Traci’s favorite lower level room happens to be her childhood bedroom where she decided to go nuts with color and design since it is now utilized as a guestroom. “Laura and I had a blast searching for the right combination of fabrics and textures for the bedding and pillows,” she adds. The walls were almost the same color green as when she grew up so Traci wanted to stay with that theme. Her parents originally incorporated a sink they called the “sanity vanity” as it was intended to ward off bathroom wars with her brother. Traci added a built-in desk and modified her original wicker hanging chair for a more practical, swivel floor version. Her brother’s childhood bedroom also serves as a guest room. The bold teal blue

accent walls are the backdrop for the wood framed, upholstered headboard. The metal and distressed wood dresser is both practical and unique. Finishing off the lower level is a full bathroom. The tub/shower features dramatic large tile walls and frameless shower door. Lighter grey elongated hexagon mosaic tile anchors the off-white cabinet and grey granite. Traci added the pop of vibrant yellow knowing it was always an easy change down the road. Out of all our projects, this renovation has evolved to being Traci’s favorite although it was certainly not stress -free. Just weeks prior to completion, the September 11 tornado that devastated parts of Sioux Falls drove a huge tree branch into the home. “It pierced through the newly replaced flat roof penetrating the living room ceiling. Flooding from the driving rain left extensive

68

SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2020

cosmetic and electrical damage throughout the living room, dining room and parts of the lower level,” adds Traci. She is grateful to S & S Services and their subs for hanging with her to see the difficult project through. However, she is most fortunate that there was no structural damage and counts her blessings. Today, after months of hard work, sweat and even some tears, Traci is most grateful for all the support and laughs this home renovation has created. Although they only spend their summers enjoying the home, they thoroughly marvel and appreciate the finished product. They have updated six homes in styles ranging from a Midwest version of Classic Colonial to a 1928 Riverview Heights English Tudor, but when it comes to cherished memories, it’s this beauty that will always stand out. n

righten your home with spring flowers in this charming mason jar vase. Suspending the jar from the wood frame adds a unique and fun twist to a simple project. Make it rustic with barnwood or use stain or paint to complement your home décor. Keep the vase up all year and switch out the stems with the changing seasons. DIRECTIONS Cut the 1 x 4 to create 2 pieces measuring 5 ½” length and 2 pieces measuring 7” length. Using a 2 ¾” hole saw drill attachment, cut a hole in one of the 5 ½” boards on center at 2 ¾”. To avoid frayed edges and create a cleaner cut, sandwich the board between two pieces of scrap wood prior to cutting. Mark the hole saw to the depth where the blade will be deep enough to cut through the board used for the frame. (If not using a hole saw, draw a 2 ¾” circle at the center and cut with a jigsaw directly in the actual 5 ½ frame board, no sandwiching with scrap wood.) The 2 ¾ dimension is just big enough to allow the jar to fit while also catching the lip of the metal ring to hold the jar suspended. Apply a bead of wood glue along both ends of the 5 ½” boards and attach to the 7” boards with a nail gun to create a square frame.

Beauty & Function: Open Kitchen Shelving Story and Photos by Lisa Marie Blair

K

itchens are the heart of the home. It’s where we gather and fuel our bodies, minds and souls. This is especially true for Jan Mandel, whose kitchen has always been the hub of her home for family and friends. Jan recently remodeled her home paying close attention to her final design choices. The open shelving completely transformed her kitchen, making it more modern, functional and welcoming.

How did you decide to style your shelves and what are the pros and cons of this open concept style?

When asked how did you decide to go with open shelving, Jan stated, “While visiting with our cabinet designer, Tori Michel, from Showplace Cabinet’s about our kitchen remodel, I expressed wanting a more modern and airy feel. Tori suggested the open shelving which offers versatility and functionality.”

Baking has always been a passion of mine so having a dedicated space when designing the layout for the kitchen was very important to me. Having the coffee station across from the baking station seemed a perfect pairing. We have morning coffee and evening tea so the drink station open shelving side is used daily too.”

“We wanted our kitchen to be efficient and functional and the two themes were a way to achieve that goal. Using the same type of glass containers on both sides adds symmetry and they are used to store items used daily so ease of access is wonderful.

“There are so many pros to the open shelving that I can’t imagine not having it! I love being able to see the items I use daily and the ease of using them without getting in the cabinets. Besides being functional for storing my baking and beverage ingredients, it is fun to add other items as well. Using stacked dinnerware, glassware, greenery and seasonal décor are all items that look wonderful on open shelving. The open shelving is a perfect place to showcase your décor style. Another pro is that floating shelves are less expensive than cabinets. The only con may be that you need to dust the shelves but I use the items on my shelves quite often so it is easy to clean. I absolutely love the modern vibe open shelving adds to our home.” Five simple styling tips for beautiful and functional open kitchen shelving. 1. Display items that you’ll use daily to get the most function out of this space. 2. Use different materials and textures for interest and depth. Glass, wood, metal, ceramic and cement are all durable and beautiful choices for your kitchen. 3. When possible, display items in groups of three in varying heights. 4. A dd in a splash of greenery by using houseplants to keep the space feeling fresh. 5. Have fun styling! You really can do no wrong as long as you love it! n

Look Around: Environmental Allergens Pose a Threat to Many By Jennifer Dumke

D

o you find yourself coughing, sniffling and sneezing and cannot identify a culprit? Sometimes it’s as simple as the environment that can create stubborn symptoms. Daniel Todd, MD, with Midwest Ear, Nose & Throat has been treating patients with allergies for over 25 years. His extensive experience makes him an expert when trying to identify the cause for discomfort. “In general, the most common allergens in the spring are tree pollens and molds. They tend to cause more congestion and postnasal drainage.” So how do you go about treating these symptoms? First, it’s important to understand how each one works to fully craft the best treatment option. Tree pollen is a stubborn airborne allergen associated with hay fever and causes a challenge when it comes to avoidance. “These tend to be seasonal allergies and cause symptoms such as itchy, watery eyes, eczema and asthma.” states Dr. Todd. In the midwest, this is triggered through trees such as cedar and juniper, along with elm and cottonwood. Pollen can also be found

76

SiouxFallsWoman.net | April/May 2020

amongst certain native weeds and grasses. Depending on your specific pollen allergy, you may notice symptoms are more noticeable at a certain time of day. Trees tend to pollinate all day, weeds pollinate more in the late mornings and early afternoon, followed by grasses pollinating more in the late afternoon and early evening. Avoiding tree pollen is a challenge, but there are some things you can do to help minimize exposure. “Running a HEPA room air cleaner in the bedroom, staying indoors when possible and closing windows can help reduce outdoor allergens,” said Dr. Todd. Many sufferers find it helpful to watch pollen counts through daily emails from websites such as www.pollen.com. Allergic symptoms due to molds and fungi are most common from July to early fall, but can start as early as the first melting of snow. Mold spores become inactive in the winter months and grow on plants killed by the cold. Molds travel through the air and tend to thrive best in dark, damp areas. Unfortunately, this trigger is not just an outdoor allergen. Indoor mold spores can

OVERALL PATIENT HEALTH Have you ever considered personalized testing to determine the overall condition of your health? Knowing the root cause for how you feel on a daily basis is a key component to initiating the healing process. If you know the cause of an issue, you can directly target and treat your condition appropriately.

also cause a reaction when exposed. Using a dehumidifier, limiting time outdoors when mold counts are high, and wearing a dust mask when doing yard work can help decrease exposure. But how do you know if that sneeze, cough or stuffy nose is from an environmental allergen? Dr. Todd suggests getting tested to ensure your treatment is headed in the right direction. “Skin testing is the gold standard in determining what you are allergic to,” he said. “Blood sampling is an acceptable option for those patients that are not good candidates for a skin test.” If you find you do have a reaction from environmental allergens, the first line of defense is avoidance. But Dr. Todd goes on to say, “Beyond that, saline nasal rinses and nasal steroid sprays are the best option for medically treating allergies.” More aggressive therapy may include allergy shots or sublingual therapy. Dr. Todd suggests consulting with a trained allergy physician to tailor a treatment plan that is best suited for each patient. “My first line of defense is to offer the least amount of therapy to make the patient feel well.” n

Top Risk Factors for Osteoporosis By Jarett C. Bies, Avera Health

O

steoporosis is a condition that puts millions of Americans at risk for bone breaks or fractures. As we age, some of the choices we make and conditions we face make an impact on our bones.

(especially if your ovaries are also removed) may increase your chances of bone loss.

“Part of living our healthiest lives is awareness of the risks that we face, and a willingness to correct those that we can control,” said Leah Prestbo, MD, CCD, Avera Medical Group Family Health Center. “There are a number of things that put you at the greatest risk for osteoporosis.”

People lose bone gradually over the years, and this increases the risk of developing osteoporosis. National Osteoporosis Foundation studies have found that one in two women and one in four men age 50 will have an osteoporosis-related fracture during their lifetime.

GENDER

“Though you cannot stop the march of time, you can take the opportunity, while you are young, to include weight-bearing exercise in your weekly activity routine,” said Prestbo. “You can get vitamin D and calcium in your diet, too. Your bones are being built and strengthened while you are in your teens and twenties.”

Prestbo said just being a woman puts you at increased risk for bone loss. “Women are four times more likely to develop osteoporosis, and women lose bone more quickly following menopause which increases the risk,” she said. “I would encourage all women to talk with their provider about your specific risks as you age.” Factors such as early menopause (before age 45) or hysterectomy 78

AGE

If you are in this age group, get plenty of calcium and vitamin D, and make sure you work weights into your workouts. People 30 and older should still keep up efforts to include calcium and vitamin D in the diet.

“Appropriate supplements can help, but it’s best to get these nutrients from whole foods,” she said. “Don’t neglect weightbearing exercises. They really help keep bone strength that you have built.”

FAMILY HISTORY, ETHNICITY AND HABITS

“Caucasian and Asian people also have a higher risk of developing osteoporosis, based on studies,” Prestbo added. “Smoking and alcohol also increase your risk. Smoking not only increases your risk of bone-loss, but it’s linked to many types of cancer and heart disease. If you smoke, quit. If you don’t smoke, don’t start.” Drinking alcohol regularly also increases risk, so moderating alcohol use, or avoiding it altogether, can help you to decrease it. CHRONIC CONDITIONS

Heredity also contributes to the risk of developing osteoporosis. If your parents had injuries such as broken hips or were diagnosed with osteoporosis, you are at higher risk.

Some medical conditions, as well as the treatments for them, can increase the risk for osteoporosis. “Rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and Crohn’s disease are a few conditions that can increase your risk, and the meds used to treat seizures, lung disease and other chronic conditions also factor into increased risk,” she said. “If you have or are being treated for a chronic medical condition, discuss your risks with your doctor. Early screening for osteoporosis may be needed.”

Look and feel healthy in your skin By Sanford Health

F

or those who are unsure about the best type of treatment to fit your needs, an esthetician can provide a starting point for having healthy skin at any age.

From feeling stuck in a skincare routine to noticing signs of sun damage or fine lines, estheticians like Angie Steen and Heidi Hansen from Vivaz Medical Spa can help restore the skin back to a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. “You don’t have to do what some consider to be bigger treatments, like an injectable, to see a difference in your skin’s appearance,” says Steen. “Even using products that contain vitamins C and E, retinol and peptides can help you maintain your skin health over time.” When creating an individualized skin care plan, here are a few treatments Steen and Hansen recommend: FACIALS To nourish and deep cleanse, a facial exfoliates the skin by removing breakouts and dead skin cells for a healthy, revitalized glow. For pampering on Mother’s Day or to prepare for a wedding, a facial provides an instantly radiant

and healthy complexion with the use of nutrient-rich serums. “Facials are one of the best ways to cleanse your skin on a deeper level than you can do at home,” says Hansen. “And you’ll also leave feeling more relaxed, less stressed and loving how your skin looks and feels.” MICRODERMABRASIONS To help refine skin texture, stimulate better circulation and increase collagen, a microdermabrasion uses a diamond tip to remove a layer of dead skin cells. Patients may also notice better skin clarity and elasticity. “Our skin changes from season to season, so right now in winter when it’s still dry, a microdermabrasion can remove the dull, old cells to make your face smoother and brighter,” says Steen. “It even helps your makeup apply better.” LASER RESURFACING Laser resurfacing stimulates collagen to treat stubborn wrinkles or discoloration and helps to heal severe sun damage, scarring or other damage.

“You’ll also see a lot of reversed signs of aging with laser treatment because it helps to soften deeper wrinkles and improve the skin’s overall health,” says Steen. CORRECTIVE COMBINATION To restore skin and collagen for a more youthful appearance, a combination of corrective treatments and a daily skincare routine can work hand in hand. If you decide to do a more dramatic correction, such as a laser treatment or injectable, those results can then be maintained at home by using skincare products containing peptides and retinol. “With anti-aging treatments, it’s not just one thing, but a combination of solutions,” says Steen. n

P

aige Thompson lives in Dell Rapids, South Dakota, with her husband, Nick, and three children, Madeline, Eloise, and Garrison. She grew up in Lennox with a close-knit family and loves living in South Dakota because she believes the people here genuinely care about you. And Paige has always had a plan. She attended Augustana University and studied government, international affairs, and religion. She also met her husband during her freshman year, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. After completing her undergraduate studies, she earned her master’s degree in Social Work at the University of South Dakota. Upon graduation, Paige started her career with SWWC and was stationed at Pipestone Area Schools as a school social worker. She then began doing mental health program development and also worked as a therapist at Avera Behavioral Health. Two years ago, something happened that she wasn’t planning on – she was pregnant with a daughter when she had a miscarriage. When she recalls that time in her life, she describes the pain she felt as visceral and something she had never experienced before. Through her loss, her eyes were opened to the pain and everyday struggles of those around her. “Prior to that, I was definitely someone who was on a plan and had this idea of where life was going,” Paige said. “After that, I saw more realistically the hardships that people go through.” This journey brought Paige to The Letter Project, which she learned about while listening to a podcast. The Letter Project, founded by Whitney Saxon, is a non-profit Christian organization that provides handwritten letters to girls and women around the world who are going through a difficult time. According to The Letter Project’s mission statement, they want girls and women “everywhere to feel seen, heard and understood.” Paige started volunteering as a letter writer and got her kids involved so they could see the importance of serving and giving back to others. Her kids would help her stamp the envelopes, and they would talk about the girls and women receiving the letters and how the letters were helping them.

Paige was working at Avera Behavioral Health when she saw the job opening for executive director of The Letter Project. As a private licensed therapist, taking a job with the nonprofit would be a huge pay cut, but she felt God nudging her to apply for the job. Her husband was onboard and supportive of her taking the new position but when she was officially offered the job, Nick was on a trip with friends at the Boundary Waters near the Canadian border and without cell service. “This is such a big leap, and my husband is my biggest encourager,” Paige said. “It’s a moment I’ll always remember because it felt like I was walking off a cliff. It’s essentially starting up and building a foundation for this dream.” Paige accepted and started as executive director of The Letter Project last August. Along with her work at the non-profit, she continues to work part time as a mental health consultant for SWWC and therapist for Restoration Mental Health. Since beginning at The Letter Project, Paige has been able to successfully grow the number of writers to 4,500. They have writers across the United States and in over 100 countries, with some in places such as Canada, Scotland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. One of her goals when she took the role was to increase the number of letters being sent out every month. So far this year, The Letter Project has had over 100 write nights, which are times for groups to get together to write letters to specific individuals. Businesses, church youth groups, and even families have participated in write nights. No matter your grammar ability or handwriting skills, Paige encourages anyone and everyone to write letters because when people receive them, they will care more about the time you took to write them a letter than if you misspelled words or have bad handwriting. Receiving a written letter allows people to feel connected in a world that is often so busy. “To be lifted up is a beautiful thing,” Paige said. Paige emphasizes that no problem is too small to receive letters. Most of the time, a family member or friend nominates the letter recipient because they’re going through a difficult time and could use some encouragement. Some letter recipients are moving to a new place, suffering from anxiety or depression, or having a tough time in school, and some are dealing with the loss of a loved one, domestic violence, or sexual assault. “The Letter Project represents that sense of empowerment and acknowledgement that you’re okay,” Paige said. “These recipients know that they’re loved and they’re not alone.” By the end of March, The Letter Project has already sent 125 bundles, which each contain 15-20 letters to be mailed to one recipient. In 2019, they sent 260 bundles – totaling over 4,000 letters – which means they are well on their way to surpassing that goal in 2020.

For those in the Sioux Falls community hoping to get involved, letter writers are always needed, and it doesn’t require a lot of time to participate. Paige assures you don’t need to do anything magical to be a writer – all you need is a piece of paper and a pen. For those wanting to help more behind the scenes, Paige can always use assistance assembling bundles and mailing them off. She also encourages people to nominate the girls and women in their lives who need some encouragement now as they walk through a difficult time. As Paige looks ahead to the future of The Letter Project, she has many dreams. She would love to continue expanding the project and replicating it in other countries. She also wants to promote the project more and host bigger events for the Sioux Falls community to come together. Through The Letter Project, Paige hopes to bring some light back into the darkness girls and women around the world are experiencing in their lives. “I see The Letter Project as a calling, and this is a great way to make people’s lives better,” Paige said. “I’m not doing it, I’m facilitating it. I get to think about how to make this world brighter.” Learn more about The Letter Project at www.theletterproject.org or reach out to Paige at paige@theletterproject.org. n

Meet Mrs. South Dakota International 2020 Inspiring Ladies of All Ages to Let Their Light Shine By Jill Funke | Photos by Lynn Marie Photography

T

here are times when people are tested by loss, grief, and tragedy. Victoria Borges of Sioux Falls can attest to the challenges that can accompany life. In 2018, after her mother passed away, she struggled with recovering her zest for living. Luckily, she learned about the Mrs. South Dakota International 2020 pageant and after earning three health and fitness certifications, launching her own website and losing 50 pounds, she registered for the competition. It was the turning point her life needed, as she says, “Entering the pageant helped me to get focused and take action toward my goals.” Victoria describes her platform as Building Self-esteem and Confidence through Health and Fitness. Hearing girls degrade themselves and their uniqueness breaks her heart, and she realizes that many succumb to self-harming behaviors including substance abuse, eating disorders, depression, and even suicide as early as age ten. With an unending fervor for this platform, Victoria was crowned Mrs. South Dakota International in October 2019. Since that time, she has been making at least one appearance each month to best represent the South Dakota International pageant. In addition, Victoria will represent the state at the International pageant in July 2020. Anticipating that event, she says, “My vision and goals are big for the duration of my reign and as I prepare for the International title coming up in Tennessee.” In keeping with that vision, Victoria volunteers for Girls On The Run and Dress for Success, as she feels that both international organizations empower girls and women respectively. “I am passionate about teaching girls and women to love who they were created to be. We teach our daughters by what we do, and when they can look at us and be proud, it builds confidence in them to let their light shine. I want every girl to feel this way.” When she is not volunteering, Victoria spends time with her 16-year-old daughter and husband of eighteen years. She is building her brand as a certified wellness expert and specializes in exercise, weight loss and fitness

nutrition. In addition, Mrs. South Dakota International enjoys working out, fashion design, public speaking and shopping trips with her daughter. To further inspire young ladies and women, Victoria is available for events, appearances and speaking engagements, and maintains a website and blog at perfectforyourpurpose. com. It is a labor of love, as she says, “I want to teach girls and women what I learned: to love who you are, believe in yourself and live victoriously.” n

Ardis Moeller A Passionate Seamstress' Journey By Lisa Marie Blair | Photography by Maggie Sweets Photography

ewing is a lost art as not many people know how to do it. Thankfully, for many people in the Sioux Empire area, they can rely on Ardis Moeller for their sewing projects. Ardis was seven years old when her mom signed her up for a beginner’s sewing class. She brought her mom’s old, heavy machine and the instructor had her practice sewing straight lines on pieces of paper. Ardis says, “I remember being terrified that I was going to sew over my finger and I had trouble finding a good speed to run the machine at, I would either put the pedal all the way down making my lines go all over the place or I would barely press the pedal down enough to make the machine sew, very similar to a new driver getting the feel for the pedal!

I can still see how wavy my lines were on that paper. Fast forward 40 years and I have my own sewing business!” When asked what inspired her to start doing custom sewing, Ardis proudly says, “My oldest daughter, Courtney, wanted to have a custom made dance costume for her solo one year. If you aren’t familiar with the dance world, let me give you some back story. If you pick from a dance costume catalog there is a chance someone else could end up wearing the same costume. She agreed to let me try making her costume that year. She picked the color and the fabric, along with the rhinestones. She enjoyed every aspect of making it unique for her. She placed her trust in me and the end result was something she loved and is still one of our favorites. I loved how it

made me feel, knowing I made something that made her feel confident & beautiful and I wanted to continue to do that for her and others. I then started making costumes for Carmen, my younger daughter, too. Each year I’ve made more and more custom costumes for others, including team costumes as well. I am thankful Courtney trusted my abilities to make that first dance costume for her and the rest is history!” Besides staying busy as a seamstress at night, Ardis is also a busy mother of three, a registered nurse for the Brandon Valley School District and a very active volunteer in the community. Sewing keeps her very busy and she is thankful that her husband, Steve and their three kids, understand this passion of hers. Ardis gushed, “I am truly honored and blessed to have found my gift!” n

McNaughton Plastic Surgery Patient Care with a Relationship Focus By Natalie Slieter | Photos courtesy of McNaughton Plastic Surgery

D

r. Laura McNaughton is a wife, mother to two boys and a board-certified plastic surgeon, and as of August 2019, she added another title to her repertoire: business owner. She opened her own practice, McNaughton Plastic Surgery, in Sioux City, Iowa. Originally from Rapid City, South Dakota, Dr. McNaughton completed her undergraduate studies at Augustana University in Sioux Falls. She studied biology and economics, and it was during these years that she thought about the possibility of pursuing a career in the medical field. “I never really thought I was capable of it,” Dr. McNaughton said. “It always seemed out of reach.” However, she knew she wanted to work with people, so

she shadowed various physicians and came to realize she enjoyed the interactions with patients. Dr. McNaughton completed her medical degree at the USD Sanford School of Medicine and chose to specialize in plastic surgery due to the variety it offers. She then went on to leave her mark in USD’s history books by becoming the first medical student to be directly accepted into a competitive plastic surgery residency. She completed her residency at the University of Missouri where she received training in breast and skin cancer reconstruction, hand surgery, and cosmetic surgery of the face and body. She and her husband Jim – originally from LeMars, Iowa – chose to return to the Midwest because they believe this part of the country is special and appreciate

the values they were raised on, which they hope to reflect in their respective businesses. After working in the field for a couple years, Dr. McNaughton decided to open her own practice because she feels that patients of plastic surgery are looking for a specific experience and she wanted to be able to provide that. Through the process of opening her own practice – something she also thought she couldn’t do – she discovered a whole new side to herself. “It’s almost like having a child – you have this little idea and you get to form it, watch it grow and change and not everything is within your control but you’re trying to nurture it along,” Dr. McNaughton shared. Her focus for McNaughton Plastic Surgery in the first year is to not only maintain the relationships she has with her patients and staff but also grow the relationships. Her advice to other women hoping to start their own businesses is to have mentors, particularly women in business. Dr. McNaughton shared that having mentors that understood the specific challenges she faced was vital in helping her open her practice. Modern Day Health Care South Dakota’s newest telemedicine primary care provider By Chellee Unruh | Photos by Christin Vander Pol

S

outh Dakotans now have a new option for medical care through telemedicine thanks to Annie Donaway, Ph.D., MS, RN, and CEO of Modern Day Health Care. Annie took her 21 years of health care experience and combined it with her love of technology to make high quality health care available and accessible to patients in remote rural and frontier areas of our state and region. South Dakota has seen an increase in telemedicine in recent years. It is estimated that 25% of South Dakotans live in a place with a shortage of primary health care options according to the South Dakota Medical Association. With a shortage in health care professionals especially in rural areas and advances in technology, companies like Modern Day Health Care are important to ensure that South Dakotans of all ages have access to good quality healthcare. Modern Day Health Care has a team of four Nurse Practitioners, one doctor of Chiropractic and

Functional Medicine and one Doctor of Physical Therapy. They see patients of all ages that are physically located in South Dakota, Iowa, Colorado and soon Minnesota. They offer all of the services for Primary and Acute Care including high blood pressure, diabetes, weight loss management, allergies, asthma, colds and flu, respiratory infections, sore throat, sprains and strains, and bladder infections just to name a few. In addition to primary care services, Modern Day Health Care can also treat patients for post-surgical recovery monitoring and has recently added Physical Therapy services. Their offering of primary care services is what sets them apart from most other telemedicine care providers. “Patients can see the same provider every time allowing them to form a strong working relationship where the provider truly knows the patient,” says Annie “ Our enrolled patients who reside in SD, IA or CO can utilize our services from most states in the country so even on vacation or travel for work they have access to their provider.”

Another reason that telemedicine is growing is that insurance companies are now starting to reimburse for telemedicine services. This is important when trying to get health care access to some of the most remote and rural sections of our state. Modern Day Health Care accepts most forms of insurance and is constantly adding more. They also have a cash payment option that follows their vision of offering high-quality care that is convenient, affordable, and easily accessible to their patients wherever they may be. All you need to access the services of Modern Day Health Care is an internet connection and a device that allows you to communicate with your primary care doctor. With these basic technology requirements, Modern Day Health Care can carry out their goals of making care easily accessible for those patients that put off their medical care and make it easy for busy people to keep in contact and stay on top of their medical care. It also allows them to provide care to individuals with limited mobility or are homebound. Annie shares, “Being a nurse has allowed me the opportunity to help people when they need it most and now Modern Day Health Care allows me to do that on a much larger scale.” Modern Day Health Care continues to grow their practice and offer new services for medical care.
