The Christian Mind In recent years, our Singapore society has been embroiled in debates over controversial issues like euthanasia, homosexuality, sex-education, and the role of religion in the public square. •
Does a terminally-ill patient have the right to terminate his own life? Does the doctor who attends to him similarly have the right to accede to his patient’s request?
•
Should our society repeal Section 377A of our Penal Code and recognize the gay or lesbian lifestyle as an accepted alternative lifestyle in our society?
•
Who should be responsible for our children’s sex education? The state? The family? If there is to be sex education in our public school system, should our children be taught “Safe Sex” or “Save Sex (for marriage)”?
•
What role does religion have in the public square? To what extent can religion exert its convictions on public discourses?
These are complex questions with no easy answers to them. And how we answer them will have significant consequences, both short-term and long-term, on the moral fabric and future of our society. As Christians who are responsible citizens of Singapore and who seek the welfare of our city, how should we respond to these issues which also affect us, our families, and our children, not to mention the generations to come? One needed and urgent response is for us to cultivate and exercise our Christian mind and then bring a Christian response to these issues. By “Christian mind” I mean a Christian outlook or a Christian world-and-life view that controls our life including our thinking, our actions and even our responses to the issues debated in our public square. Such an outlook or world-and-life view is rooted in the Gospel and is informed by the revelation of God as this is found in the Holy Scriptures. To have a Christian mind is to think God’s thoughts after Him. To have a Christian mind is, to use the words of the Apostle Paul, “to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor 10:5). Let’s face it: In our public discourses right now on some of the controversial issues confronting our society, we are seeing a battle of worldviews. Some worldviews uphold and propagate
values that are decidedly contrary to the Christian worldview. They are, for example, anti-marriage and anti-family. They are advocating values which we believe will threaten the very foundations and well-being of our marriages, families and society. As Christians face these issues alongside their non-Christian neighbours, we need to bring our Christian mind to bear on these issues. As we listen in to the conversations or, better still, as we participate in the public discourse, we need to present and defend the Christian worldview clearly, winsomely, and persuasively. If Christians and the church in Singapore are to take their public responsibility seriously, they need to cultivate a Christian mind. This means continuously going back to the Gospel and to the Scriptures to discern and understand the mind of God. This means faithfully reading, studying and thinking through the Scriptures not only for information but also for application and transformation. Such a discipline is needed for at least three reasons. Firstly, it is a manifestation of our love for God. In Matthew 22:37, Jesus tells us, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your MIND” (cf. Mark 12:30). Secondly, a constantly renewed mind will enable us to discern the will of God. Paul writes, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your MIND. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom. 12:2). Thirdly, such a discipline will equip us to do what Paul did in the synagogue, the marketplace and the lecture hall, namely, to reason from the Scriptures concerning the Gospel and the things of God (see Acts 17:2-3, 17-18; 19:9). SBC’s CCTE exists to equip the whole people of God for the general ministry of the church, and the general ministry of the church of necessity includes the public square. Through our current and future offerings of courses and programmes in Bible, Theology, Apologetics, and Ethics, we envision the equipping of a generation of Christians who have a Christian mind and who would bring a Christian world-and-life view to bear on the issues facing our society. And we want to do this because we love and seek the welfare of our city. To this end, CCTE invites Christians who share this vision to join our learning community, and we need more in this community because as J. P. Moreland has so astutely written,“If we are going to be wise, spiritual people prepared to meet the crises of our age, we must be a studying, learning community that values the life of the mind.” (Love Your God With All Your Mind [Colorado Springs, CO: Navpress, 1997], p. 39) May God raise up many of His people who would value the life of the mind! ________________________ Rev Dr Bernard Low is the Director of SBC’s Centre for Continuing Theological Education. CCTE COURSES FOR TERM I 2010 11 Jan to 26 Feb 2010, 7.30 -9.30pm at SBC’s MPH / Lecture Theatre / Room 1-302 Mondays (Jan, 11, 18, 25; Feb 1, 8, 22) NT02(K): New Testament Survey II (Korean) This course provides an overview of the New Testament (NT), tracing its teachings with respect to historical backgrounds and literary characters. It assists students in studying the origins of Christianity by means of its canonical literature and helps them acquire essential elements for their interpretation of the NT. Lecturer: Rev Hwang Jae Myeong, BBA, MComm, MDiv, is a lecturer at the Korean Father School (Singapore) and has taught biblical and theological courses at International Baptist Church (Singapore). He is presently studying for his MTh at the Biblical Graduate School of Theology, Singapore. TH04: Anthropology: The Doctrine of Man Why do I exist? What is my destiny and purpose in life? How can I live a meaningful life? Who am I in relationship to others around me? These questions and more are asked and answered in various ways by people around the world. As Christians we can turn to the Bible for answers, and learn from the wisdom of the church through the centuries to discover our role in the world. In this class, we shall also explore: What does it mean to be created in the image of God? Has God used evolution to bring us into existence? What are the proper roles for men and women in society as designed by God? What impact does culture have on thinking? Lecturer: Rev Dr John Massey, BA, MDiv, PhD, is a lecturer in Theological and Historical Studies at the Baptist Theological Seminary, Singapore and an ordained Southern Baptist minister. He and his wife, Vanessa, serve with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, USA, and have been living in Singapore for the last 6 years. Tuesdays (Jan 12, 19, 26; Feb 2, 9, 23) OT01: Old Testament Survey I This two-part course gives an overall framework for each of the 39 books of
the Old Testament (OT), emphasizing major themes and relationships between them. Part 1 covers the historical books of Genesis to Esther while Part 2 addresses the poetic and prophetic books from Job to Malachi. Students will learn the backgrounds (author, date, origin, recipients, occasion, characteristics and argument) of each OT book, their general content and relevance to Asian culture and world mission. Also, general biblical theology, backgrounds on foreign countries that affected Israel and a chronology of the history of Israel will be covered. Lecturer: Rev Dr Rick Griffith, B.Sc, ThM, PhD, is a lecturer in Biblical Studies at SBC and Pastor-Teacher at Crossroads International Church. CM01: Introduction to Children’s Ministry This course covers the biblical basis of ministry with children; the vision, goals, mission and core values of an effective children’s ministry; understanding today’s children and their needs; understanding current trends; setting up an effective children’s ministry; and building strong parent/home-children’s ministry relationship. Lecturers: 1. Mr David Leong, M.C.S. in Christian Studies, Executive Director of Scripture Union Singapore; 2. Wednesdays (Jan 13, 20, 27; Feb 3, 10, 24) DM01: Foundations for Spiritual Parenting This course seeks to teach and reinforce the discipline of listening to God and Journaling. It challenges students with a vision for spiritual parenting and equips them with the skills needed. There will
be opportunities for them to begin the process of learning to disciple another through peer coaching. Lecturer: Mr Mogan Mannar is a full-time staff worker of The Navigators, and is the Director of the Church Discipleship Ministry (CDM) as well as part of the National Leadership Team. He and his family worship at Riverlife Church where he serves as an Area Overseer and teacher. NT03: Ephesians (God’s Wonderful Plan) Many Christians have “lost the plot” about what God wants. We still “have the script” – we attend church, discharge ministry and embark on mission. But can we be doing God’s work without God? Speaking God’s Word without God’s voice? Many scholars consider Ephesians the “climax” of Pauline theology. Here Paul the Apostle takes us to the lofty heights of who Christ and His Church is. We also see the warfare in the “heavenlies” between God and Satan, and how that impacts the Church’s mission Lecturer: Rev Dr Chris Chia, B.Comm, B.Th, Harvard Fellow, MTh, D.Min in Preaching, is Senior Pastor of Adam Road Presbyterian Centre (ARPC). Thursdays (Jan 14, 21, 28; Feb 4, 11, 25) MS03: Culture and Contextualization This course gives an introduction to the concepts of culture and contextualization as the gospel crosses cultural boundaries. Students will consider how contextualization ideas are applied to four different areas of thinking and praxis, as illustrated from two specific cultures in East Asia. Students will also develop skills to analyze their own culture and other cultures, and gain greater awareness of the issues involved in relating Christian faith to other cultures. Lecturer: Rev Dr Warren Beattie, Ph.D., is Director for Mission Research at OMF International and Adjunct Faculty at Discipleship Training Centre, Singapore. Dr Florence Tan is on a 10-week sabbatical from Aug 15 to Oct 25, as a Visiting Scholar at Redcliffe College, Gloucester, UK. She will teach an Urban Missions course to students, speak at a seminar on Women Who Make a Difference, and lead a workshop, The Discipling Heart, at the College. filed past my lectern. Some put their CD on the desk. Others transferred their offerings to my MacBook Pro via flash drive. Each looked relieved, yet excited. What’s going on? This is one of SBC’s small attempts to reverse Babel. You remember Babel, right? Man in his arrogance thought he could build a tower to replace God, so God humbled him by confusing his languages. See Genesis 11. In my first thirteen years teaching at SBC, I tortured students with research papers. Arduously they rendered their thoughts into English on each page. Then I bloodied it with red ink and handed it back to them. They in turn looked at the grade and filed it — sometimes into the “circular file”! After each semester I measured my pain by the centimeters remaining in my tower of papers to mark.

It’s not a perfect system. They can grow as translators, but most of them translate at home after they graduate anyway, so why not start now? Once they get home, they struggle to find time to render biblical studies into their language. We have done this for five years with over 200 translators in 25 languages. Their reports amaze me. While on school break back in Indonesia or Mongolia, students now often teach the material they’ve translated — either TBB, or now my courses OT Survey, NT Survey, OT Backgrounds, NT Backgrounds, or Preaching. My course notes and their corresponding 300 PowerPoint presentations are now available for free download on my website. This includes hundreds of translations of “The Bible…Basically” and my own courses into 25 languages — especially Chinese and Bahasa Indonesia. This site is updated daily with new materials. The Better Way Writing papers develops these leaders from 29 countries, true… and most of my faculty colleagues require this. But most of these leaders minister in their native language after they graduate — not in English. Then in 2004 I learned about “The Bible…Basically” (TBB). This 10-hour seminar through the whole Bible by Dr John Fryman in Fort Worth, Texas has 948 stunning PowerPoint slides. Then an idea hit me… Hey, why not have students translate TBB PowerPoint into their native languages as their term project? No more research papers! The idea seemed helpful, yet at the same time ridiculous. I don’t speak any of these languages, so who would grade their assignments? Then I realized that they’re more concerned

到底在发生什么事情？这是新神为扭转巴别塔给我们带来的 麻烦所做的小小的努力之一。 你应该记得巴别塔吧？人不知天高地厚，认为可以建造一座 塔来取代上帝，所以上帝就变乱他们的语言，使他们谦卑下 来。请参阅创世记11章。 在新神任教的头13年，我“折磨”了学生：他们都必须写研 究论文，每人辛辛苦苦地把思想写成一篇一篇的英文稿。接 着，我用红笔把它们改得“血淋淋的”，才还给学生。学生 们看了成绩，就把它归档了。每个学期过后，我都用我需要 批改的作业摞的厘米高度来丈量我的痛苦。

Day of Prayer On
Oct 15, 2009, the SBC family experienced a Day of Prayer with lots of participation. Following the acronym ACTS, we began with Adoring God through Scripture and songs before moving into a time of Confession. Faculty and students wrote confessions on strips of transparencies and saw visually their “sins washed away” as each strip were dipped in water. This session ended with the Lord’s Supper, as we remembered what Christ did on the cross for us. We Thanked God for His goodness and giftedness through Scripture, songs, calligraphy, solos, duets and poem, followed by prayer in small groups. We were challenged from the Word to “Seek the Lord” as we culminated our Day of Prayer with Supplication. Five persons represented us all, and prayed through John 17: 15-17; Col 1:9-11; James 1:22; Col 3:23 and 2 Tim 4:2-5. As we left the Worship Hall to pray in our pastoral care groups, each collected a prayer request which had been placed in the “crevices” of our SBC built “wailing wall.” The variety of ways we brought our prayers before God has been both meaningful and memorable. This Day has left us with a permanent impression and we never shall be the same because of it.
祷告日 2009年10月15日是新神大家庭的祷告日，很多人都参加了。 我们先是通过经文和诗歌颂赞神，然后我们向神悔罪。师生 把忏悔写在幻灯片上，然后当幻灯片被浸在水里的时候，亲 眼目睹“罪被洗掉”。这段时间以圣餐结束，纪念基督为我 们在十架上所做的。 大家藉着经文、歌曲、书法、独唱、重唱和诗词来感谢上帝 的良善和大能。之后，我们分小组祷告。 当我们代祷时，祷告日达到高潮，神的话语挑战我们“寻求 主”。五个人代表我们所有的人，用约翰福音17章15-17节， 歌罗西书1章9-11节，雅各书1章22节，歌罗西书3章23节和 提摩太后书4章2-5节祷告。当我们走出敬拜大厅去自己的牧 养关怀小组祷告时，每个人都从新神制作的“哭墙”的缝隙 中拿到一张写有代祷事项的字条。 我们向上帝祷告的不同方式既有意义又令人难以忘怀。祷告 日给我们留下永久的印象，我们的生命由此得到改变。

Field Education Witnessing Blitz is an evangelistic outreach by all Field Education (FE) students over 4 weeks during the Jan/ Feb period. Sharing the gospel with relatives, friends or strangers is done on an individual or small group basis. SOTE student Karen Mak tells about one such experience. “I came to know Mdm Lim in the early part of 2008. During a Chinese New Year celebration at my church, Mdm Lim’s daughter, Ah Lian, told me that her Mum had suffered a stroke. Immediately after our celebration, we visited Mdm Lim at the hospital. As she was a non-believer, Ah Lian asked me to share the gospel with her Mum as soon as possible. I used the Gospel tract, “The blessing of New Year”, to bless her and share that Jesus loves and cares for her. Then I prayed for her and committed her to God. Subsequently, I visited Mdm Lim again to continue sharing God’s love with her. She appeared happy as many church members had visited her at the hospital even though it was the Chinese New Year period. I continued to pray for her salvation as she was not ready to accept Lord Jesus as her savior due to her perception of her son’s objection to the Christian faith.
She was staying with him and did not want to go against him. After Mdm Lim was discharged from hospital, Ah Lian brought her to join our church’s seniors group meetings on several occasions. In April 2009, I received an urgent call from Ah Lian as Mdm Lim was hospitalised again. She had forgotten to switch off the gas after cooking and inhaled some gas. Due to the H1N1 flu situation then, we had to take turns to see Mdm Lim. I spent time with Mdm Lim and prayed for her. On May 17, 2009, God answered our prayers and saved Mdm Lim. Ah Lian shared joyfully with me that just one week before that, she had asked her mum if she wanted to be a Christian, but she left this decision to her son. Ah Lian quickly asked her brother and he said he would leave the decision to their mum. Ah Lian then arranged for our church’s Elder Chan to explain the Gospel to Mdm Lim, and he led her to pray the sinner’s prayer. A week later, I visited Mdm Lim in the hospital again. I found much joy in her. I sang three Christian songs to cheer her up and she echoed the words of some songs with joy. I thanked the Lord and for her trust in Him. It’s our prayer that Mdm Lim’s son will accept Lord Jesus as his Savior too.”

MACE students’ practical experiences

Our practical, hands-on Christian Education programme makes our students go beyond the theory. Integrating with real life situations help seal their learning in a realistic way. While students study theories and principles, their assignments often take them out of the classroom. This semester, “Church Ministry to Youth” students worked hard at putting together a good 4-hour Youth leadership training to be taught in a church. Unfortunately, last minute changes did not allow them to do the actual teaching, though they had a good practice session. The “Principles of Christian Education” class conducted a 4-hour Teachers’ Training at Shalom BP Church on Nov 7, 2009. The “Essentials of Effective Teaching” offered practical tips and know-hows on being better teachers for the students God gives us. Pray with us as we in the MACE (Master of Acts in Christian Education) programme attempt to train students to be practitioners for the needful Christian Education ministry of the church. Course Description (2 CR hours) This course aims to provide an overview of the roles of assessments in counselling. It covers important concepts underlying assessment tools, how counsellors can use them to help clients, and the tools’ ethical use and limits. A sampling of both informal and formal assessment instruments will be done. Participants will also be familiarised with some standardized assessment methods that are useful in understanding individual personality, marital satisfaction, screening for possible mental illness and counselling outcomes. Using a case study approach, the course emphasizes case conceptualization, treatment planning, and empirically validated interventions for problems commonly seen in children and teens. Ethical issues and concerns that often arise in providing therapy to children and teens, as well as issues in counter transference and therapist self-care, will be discussed. Relevant theological issues and Biblical principles will also be integrated into course content. About the Lecturer Prof Maureen Neihart is a licensed clinical child psychologist (US) with 30 years experience working with children and families. Congratulations 恭贺 Rev Dr Steven Tan (SOTE BTh 84) was ordained at Hope Presbyterian Church in Singapore, and installed as Moderator of the church, on Sep 19. 陈福财牧师（英文神学系84年神学学士） 于9月19日在新加坡的希望长老教会被按 立，并被委任为教会的会议主席。
Rev Charles Chua (SOTE BTh 91) has been pastoring two small Presbyterian churches in Swansea, Wales, for the last seven years, while his wife Molly spearheads the English Corner for international students, where a number have turned to Christ. Condolences 慰唁 Our deepest condolences to Rev Joshua Chung (SOTC BTh 93) whose beloved wife Mrs Esther ChungChang (SOTC MBS 91) was called home to the Lord on Oct 10 after a battle with illness. 霜的基督徒，无辜 下狱，手脚扣上铁 镣，经过四五年的 囚禁，在无助和苦 难中，连弟兄姐妹 也因他的患难沮丧 时，他对神的能力会有什么领悟？

神的能力无限， 只要圣灵开启信 徒的心眼，就 可以看见；祷告 能带来属灵的透 视，使人能知道神的能力（弗1:15-23）。这能力运行在信 靠顺服神的人里面（西1: 29）。神的能力在人之外，在人 之上，不由人控制，却是仆人藉着谦卑祷告向神支取，成 为神能力的管道。
保罗完成第三次宣教旅程，回到耶路撒冷就被诬告抓拿 和囚禁（约公元57年），不久又被转送到该撒利亚监禁两年， 后来因为上诉凯撒，几经周折，包括海难， 最后被押送到罗马。保罗在受监狱里写了4封 信（约公元60-62年），流露他在困难中对神 的能力的信念。
基督徒过去的 重生、现在的 改变、将来的 复活，都依靠 神在基督里所 彰显的能力。
神 以 他 的 能 力 使 基 督 从 死 人 中 复 活（ 弗 1 : 19）。它改变了保罗，使他从杀人的凶手， 变成传福音的仆人（弗3:7）。神的能力，能 刚强基督徒“内在的人”，叫他们不为自己 或别人苦难而沮丧（弗3:16，20）。神的能 力使平凡的信徒能够过不平凡的人生，凡事 忍耐（hupomone 在压力下守着岗位）、宽容 （makrothumia 被人得罪与伤害时仍 给 人 时 间 与 机 会 作 出 改 变 ）， 而 且 是 带 着喜乐的心。神以这能力在劳苦疲乏 的 传 道 人 的 心 里 运 行 ，使 他 们 能 够 胜 任 所 托 使 命 ，为 传 扬 基 督 竭 力 奋 斗（ 西 1 : 2 9 ）。 最 後 ， 神 的 能 力 也 要 使 基 督 徒 经 历“ 不 再 死”的复 活（腓 3:10）。
能力（希腊文dunamis）是一个名词，出现 在新约里（120次）、保罗书信（49次）、监 狱书信（8 次: 弗1: 9，21；3: 7，16，20；腓 3: 10；西1:11，29）。本文是“抽样”的研究， 洞察能力的一斑，故此不代表这名词在新约 或保罗书信里的语域或意义范围。在监狱书 信里这字有两方面的意义:（1）灵界鬼魔或 世人的权势。 “有能的”是受造的，属于鬼魔 或世 人 的 权 势 ，却 是 在 神 的 大 能 的 掌 控 之 下（弗1:21）。 （2）神的能力，内容如下：

能力（dunamis）是上帝本体无限的权能 运行 的力量 （弗1:19；请查考这些监狱书信里dunamis以外有关 4 能力的名词。还有动词，例如：能dunamai ；行事、运 5 行energeõ ）。保罗用四个名词一同来形容神的能力，是 要显示它是浩大无比、无限、笔墨难以形容的能力。神的 能力在历史上的明证，是使耶稣基督从死人中复活（弗1: 19）。这是神所启示的能力，世上找不到任何的类比。神 的能力能够成就一切: 充充足足，超过人所能够祈求或想 象的（弗3:20）。
2. 范围与时间: 超越任何对象、领域、时间。 神 使 基 督 从 死 里 复 活 的 能 力 ， 远 超 过 任 何 权 势（ 弗 1 : 21）: 对象（一切名衔），领域（人间或灵界），时间（今生 来世）。神的能力也运行在基督徒的生命里面（弗3:16， 20；西1:29）。
4. 效应：带来改变。
反省与行动 基督徒过去的重生、现在的改变、将来的复活，都依靠神 在基督里所彰显的能力。昔日在监狱里的保罗和今日的圣徒 都能见证，神的能力带来改变，有彰显於外，改变恶劣的环 境，也有彰显於内，改变沮丧的心境。人的尽头，常常是 神做工、显出能力的时候。基督徒与神的仆人在顺境逆境中 都可以祷告，放心信靠顺服主，至死忠心，履行主所托付的 使命。 神藉着降生人间的救主耶稣基督，彰显他的能力，更使被 钉死在十字架上的救主，第三天从死人中复活，扭转罪所带 来的混乱、败坏与死亡。今天神的能力也彰显在基督徒与神 的仆人身上，在我们平凡的生活里彰显神不平凡、改变生命 的能力。在圣诞节和未来的日子，我们不但要分辨善恶，也 要靠神的能力拒恶行善，让上帝透过我们传扬基督，呼召世 人归向他，以致混乱变为和谐，败坏得以更新，死亡变成永 生。诚心所愿。

助手难寻，能干的助手就 更难寻。当你找到能干的助 手，一定要竭尽所能留住他 们，因为想再找到这样的助手 谈何容易！

每一位领袖都有长处和 短处，而一位领袖的长 处也往往是他（她）的 短处！摩西的长处是带 领以色列人履行上帝的 旨意，他的短处则是不 能持久。亚伦和户珥的任务就 是要帮助摩西坚持到战斗取得 胜利。一些助手暗地希望他们 的领袖是超人。他们本该与领 袖并肩作战，补他的不足，但 他们却批评他（她），使他（她） 的工作更加困难。当领袖表现 出领导上的弱点时，一些助手 甚至鄙视他（她）。 能干的助 手应该在领袖的不足上提供协 助，好让领袖能全心投入在他 （她）的擅长上！ 领袖如果喜得能干的助手，这 是何等乐事。领袖会因着能干 的助手而更上一层楼！ 如果你是领袖，珍惜你能干 的助手！如果你在协助一位 领袖，就做一个能干的助手！
