2020

FROM OUR BOARD Partnering in Faith for Theological Education The year 2020 so far has been extraordinary for all of us—in fact, for all of humankind. COVID-19 has brought sickness, death, paralysis, fear, and uncertainty. It has caused all of us to adjust our lives and our work, relationships, and outlook. For many, this has been a time of reflection on what is truly valuable and precious to us. SBC has not been spared either. Very quickly, we have had to close our campus, deliver lessons remotely, continue functioning on a work-fromhome basis, conduct meetings online, and take care of the emergent needs of our students, residents, staff, and so on. I am glad that the College has responded well to all of these challenges. While this is largely because of the steady improvements we have been making to our processes and infrastructure, the critical factor has been the strong desire and determination of the College staff and faculty to continue what is truly precious and valuable— the mission of preparing our students for God’s work. We have been able to forge ahead despite the dire circumstances because of unstinting support from you—our benefactors, donors, and advocates. In this report, we are very pleased to share the impact and fruit of your gifts to SBC. Thank you so much.

02

COVID-19 or no COVID-19, our work must go on. We trust in our God for his provision, that he is in total control of the situation, and that he will continue to provide for the College through you, his instruments of favour and generous endowment to the College. With your continued support, we will come out of COVID-19 stronger, more adaptable, and more determined to advance the College’s vision and mission, for God’s glory and the furtherance of his kingdom. We will also be able to support more students from the region to train at SBC, enhance our online learning and learning support to help our students study more effectively and reach out further afield to provide continuing education, and grow our teaching capability. Will you continue to partner with us in this venture and walk with us in faith to serve our God? Prof. H.K. Cheong Chairman of the Board

Training faithful servants of Jesus Christ for the harvest field has remained our mission for the past 68 years. In tandem, we have been exercising the Lord’s commandment to love by making essential funding available for students who need them. For this report, we caught up with some of our current and alumni beneficiaries.

Briefly share your ministry/work before studying at SBC.

Stewardship Report 2020

Ingres: I was working as a children’s pastor for nine and a half years at ICA (International Christian Assembly), an English-speaking church in Surabaya, Indonesia before I came to SBC. Philo:

I was serving full-time in the Singapore Armed Forces for six years prior to joining SBC. God has never called me to “full-time” ministry, but rather to follow him with my life. My personal challenge was to entrust my everything to him, which is why it was a progression before I could finally go into “full-time”. I was also challenged by fellow believers: “How can you witness if you are not in the marketplace?”

Nyoi: Before studying at SBC, I served at Kachin Theological College (KTC) in Shan state, Myanmar for six years as a music teacher and head of the music department.

How were you led to study in your respective school/major at SBC, and what difficulties did you encounter?

Ingres: I was burnt out in my last year of ministry. I also needed to be equipped more in counselling as many came to me to share their problems but I had no idea how to help them. For example, a volunteer always asked me to pray for her, but did not want to share the details. I had prayed for her and listened to her stories, but felt stuck. Not knowing how to counsel her was one reason why I came to SBC and am studying counselling.

I have learned that probably I did not let her sit with her pain and sad feelings. Instead, with my “pastoral thought”, I pushed her to have a joyful life when she probably was in the stage of depression. Lack of knowledge can be harmful even though I do not intend it that way. So, I am grateful for the opportunity to study counselling at SBC.

Philo:

The MDiv is just a starting point as I go deeper in pursuing theological studies. To be equipped in this way to serve “better” is not wrong, but I believe that every seminary, church or any other place that provides theological education aims to broaden the understanding of God. So, as much as skills and knowledge are important, they will mean nothing if I do not walk intimately with God. At SBC, I’m grateful for the lecturers who not only exemplify their spiritual lives, but also live out what they teach—to trust in God.

Nyoi: When I served in seminary, I found the need for church music to be urgent in our churches and communities. As I only held a Bachelor of Music from a conservatory, I felt that I needed more equipping to become a church music educator with a pastoral heart.

I didn’t want to just teach music and perform in church. My concern became more about how to bring out music which would lead to effective worship. I was called to train church musicians to become effective church music leaders with a pastoral heart, but I myself needed that training first. This led me to study church music at SBC.

It has been quite challenging here, especially as I didn’t have theological training at my first college. I have had to study harder to catch up with these subjects, but it has been worth it to be able to study theology alongside music.

Ingres: SBC’s scholarship programme took away some of the financial burdens of studying, and so it has helped me to focus on my learning process. Thank you, donors, for allowing me to unlearn, re-learn, and learn! Philo: The scholarship not only has helped me with my academic fees, but also allowed for surplus for ministry. I could use what I was blessed with to bless others in my ministry. Nyoi:

Even though KTC continues to pay my monthly salary during my studies at SBC, it is not enough to cover my tuition, hostel fees, and other living expenses in Singapore. By the grace of God, SBC’s scholarship programme has been a tremendous financial help for me to be able to continue to study at SBC.

Candy: After graduation, I eagerly served again at our church in the Philippines as a campus missionary! For the next two years, my husband and I along with our team reached out to 11 universities—sharing the gospel, counselling, and training and mentoring students, as well as conducting evangelistic retreats, youth services, and international mission trips. After two years, my husband and I were led to spearhead the leadership development of our church’s youth ministry and I was given the role of “Missionary Care”— primarily charged with counselling and mentoring campus workers nationwide (currently 230 in total, reaching more than 260 high schools and universities).

Amidst COVID-19, the LORD is reaching more youths through our online ministries, including counselling, evangelistic retreats, youth services, and chats. Truly, I will forever be grateful to God for those who invested and made it possible for me to be equipped at SBC for his glory and purposes!

Note:

I’m serving as a missionary with my wife. We are church planters in northeastern Thailand. We work with Thai workers who used to work and have received Christ in Singapore. Now, they have come back to their hometown with a vision and passion to plant churches, so we are going to partner with them.

Candy: Receiving a strong call from the LORD to serve Him as a Christian counsellor missionary, I was led to pursue an MA in Counselling at SBC in 2012. The news that my SBC scholarship had been granted along with other sponsors gave me the assurance that this was indeed his call for me and was the encouragement to further persevere in pursuing it. Being fully provided for in being equipped to live out God’s call enabled me to focus on learning without being worried about financial provisions. Experiencing such grace from God through his handpicked ministry partners filled my heart with gratitude and encouraged me to pour this on others as well.

Note:

I appreciate SBC for giving me the community where I learned the beauty of the church, where we share life together, we pray together, we can cry and be vulnerable, and we can share, be honest and love each other. I want to thank God and the donor(s) who provided the scholarship making it possible for me to be here. The scholarship was one of the signs that God has confirmed his calling for my full-time ministry, so it was a very important step for me.
