Scarlett Rose: Glamour at its best!
Ever watched the sun peep out of a dark cloud? Its brightness more significant amidst all the darkness around. The sun never ceases to shine even on a gloomy day. When Scarlett Rose, a model from Goa, got in touch with Neil Almeida, a fashion photographer from Mumbai, for a photo shoot under the banner of Neil Grake Photography, neither of them imagined the bustling hype these pictures would create. Was it fate, luck, destiny or a sheer combination of rare untamed beauty? Added to this was the instinctive talent Neil possessed, their meeting hit off on a positive note and the end result – sinfully good pictures! In the past when she was turned down by numerous photographers for being slightly overweight, to the present; where she emerges graceful with offers flowing onto her lap, Scarlett recalls with desperation, the tremendous effort she put in, to lose an excess 15 kilos and get back into shape and on the road to the glitz and glamour of the modeling world. “Earlier, I was rejected by photographers for being slightly overweight. Thanks to the photo shoot with Neil, things are a lot different today” She recollects. Having never done a swimwear shoot before, she was hesitant at the approach. Eventually however, she agreed to give it a try. That got Neil to pack his camera, hop on to a plane, and fly down to Goa beaming from ear to ear for the shoot. The picturesque setting of Loutolim Springs and Colva beach captured the eye of both individuals, finalizing the location for the shoot. A few days later, Neil was on his way back home, raring to upload the pictures on Facebook for everyone to take notice. Rightly so, everyone did! Within minutes of uploading the pictures on Facebook, likes and comments from fans and peers, commending every click started to pour in. One comment from a Mumbaikar actually read, “That’s it! I’m moving to Goa.” When asked if she had expected such an overwhelming response, Scarlett replied with subtle excitement in her voice, “When the number of likes on the pics and FB pages started to shoot up drastically, both Neil and I were mere spectators to this phenomenal response”. I remember Neil telling me before the shoot that I am naturally beautiful and I just need the right photographer to highlight my beauty. I’m glad we clicked!” Scarlett maintains that she is not very friendly with unknown people and prefers to keep it that way. She says, “Yes, I did get in touch with Neil through Facebook but that was only because I loved the pictures he had taken which were displayed on his page. I guess
Neil and I were meant to work together and I’m thrilled that we did.” When asked what motivated him for the shoot, Neil quotes, “I always wanted to shoot in Goa due to its picturesque locations and beautiful beaches but never got an opportunity to do so”. That was until the day he came across Scarlett rose and realized that there wouldn’t be a better way to kick start his dream of shooting in Goa other than with the runner up for Miss Goa 2011. He seized the moment when Scarlett was in prime shape for a bikini shoot. Neil adds, “Goa is extremely beautiful & is filled with endless locations for shoots. It was my first visit to Goa and now I plan to visit it frequently. Hopefully, it will be my second home.” Scarlett has had numerous achievements under her belt, including Miss Creation 2011, Miss Very Queen of Panjim 2011, Runner up for Miss Goa 2011-2012, and Navy Queen’s Miss Facebook. She has also acted in a short film titled “Been Here Before”, done a photo shoot for the Abraxas Annual Calendar 2012-2013, completed a commercial shoot for Ayushree Spa, a commercial shoot for Baywatch Resort, modeled for international jewelry brand “Manek Jem Jewelry. Even with so many accomplishments to back her up, getting a photo shoot with a leading photographer seemed like a challenge. But that’s changed for the good now. After shooting with Neil, Within a couple of days offers started to pour in heavily, out of which, she did two videos for VH1 for internationally known music crew “Third Degree”, a hair show for L’Oreal, photo shoots for international companies, and many more lined up . Today she has more than 5000 subscribers and over 2000 fans, which have shot up tremendously after the shoot with Neil. Scarlett quotes, “Neil & I have built a bond within a short span of time. Not only do we share a professional bond of being a photographer & model but also a bond of being "Friends forever". Aiming to set high standards As the season for music and entertainment approaches, the sleepy village of Shiroda wakes up every evening to music. Set with a practice room just around the marketplace, serious practice rules the roost these days for this ensemble. They call themselves ‘High Waves’. Probably this is to signify the pleasantly high sound waves of melody that they produce with their music. Rio Barreto (lead guitar and vocals), Anthony Rodrigues (bass guitar), Brendon Noronha (keyboards and vocals), Wilson Antao (drums) and Prety Rodrigues (female vocals) together promise to produce music like never before. This newly revamped setup has come together, of late, with the unwavering spirit of hard-work and dedication upper most in their minds. Their aim is a lofty one, “We want to and we are all set to mesmerize our listeners this season with some delightful music.” The group with the name ‘High Waves’ first came into existence in 2003. And right from then, the musical ensemble has always concentrated on practice. The new combination has now developed an excellent rapport amongst themselves. They aver, “There is no senior-most and junior-most member in our band. We are together, always on an equal footing.” In fact the spirit of being like a family is very evident amongst them. Brenden says, “When we are together, we are always like a family.” Rio adds, “We all contribute with our own ideas and techniques in the music we produce.” Wilson reveals, “We chose songs that would be liked by people and ones that they would want us to play.”
Rio has been into music for the last 10 years. “I started out playing the acoustic guitar, but now I play the lead guitar in the band,” he discloses. He is in-charge of the song selection for the band. “I like pop, ballroom, ballads and oldies,” he emphatically states. Among his favorite singers are Lionel Richie and Rod Steward. He also likes latest in pop music and club music. Anthony has been around in the music scene for about four years. It is his first season with High Waves. Rock, hip hop and reggae are the kinds of music that pleases this musician. “Bryan Adams is amongst my favorite singers,” he declares. For him, “Being part of this band is a good opportunity to put in hard-work and feel good about it.” “I want to see our band attain high standards and be amongst the top groups in Goa,” is the target Brendon has set for the band. He does hope his six years of experience in the music scene and four years of involvement with the band holds him in good stead to fulfill his dream. He has definitely benefitted from being in the band thus far, “I have improved a lot with playing jazz standards.” Among his favorites in music is blues, ballads and pop music. The bass drum has something written all over it that proudly announces: “Wilson on the drums”. This drummer has a good 10 years of musical experience and is into all kinds of rock music. He loves pop-rock and even soft-rock. His favorite is the band Toto, the band that rocked with their songs in the 1970s and 80s and still does so even today. “I enjoy playing live music with the band,” Wilson states very ardently. Prety is into music since the last three years and this is her first season as vocalist for High Waves. She loves singing love songs and rock songs. Shania Twain, Lionel Richie and our very own nightingale Lorna are amongst her inspirations. For her, being a part of High Waves has been a pleasant experience so far. “We commit mistakes but we try to learn from them. We are completely friendly and open as a group,” she reveals. She has set her aims high, “I would like to contribute, in my own small way, into taking music higher and higher.” The ensemble does consider their song selection as something they should take pride in. “We are not into doing market-popular songs,” says Anthony. Rio selects the songs and then they are practiced and played by the band. Thud, the group has many new and rarely performed numbers in its repertoire. High Waves has performed for wide range of events like at weddings, hotel shows, public shows and at some prominent entertainment venues. They are on the lookout to improve constantly, “We have even made a change in the band, but this was done to bring together a better setup than before.” They want to keep going and set very high standards for themselves.

O que acontece quando um Mário Miranda encontra um Gerard da Cunha? O conhecido arquiteto, acólito de Laurie Baker (se essa é a descrição correcta) e inspirador de muitos outros no seu campo de acção, encara um dos mais conhecidos desenhadores da Índia com uma vingança. Ultimamente, Gerard popularizou sistematicamente e com paixão o trabalho de Mário, tornando-o visível. Claro está que se pode argumentar que Mário ligado durante décadas ao Grupo Times of India e inspirador de muitos outros no seu campo de acção (as revistas e o Economic Times não constituindo o navio almirante do Grupo onde RK Laxman preponderava) - não carecia de mais visibilidade. Mas então, como todos os empreendedores, Mário não era suficientemente reconhecido na sua própria casa. Mais: o seu trabalho estava disperso por toda a parte e poderia facilmente perder-se para a história. Ou de acesso impossível. O mais recente trabalho do arquiteto-transformadoem-editor intitula-se «A vida de Mário, 1950'». Nele, é-nos apresentada a obra do artista durante a sua juventude. Numa breve apresentação de Mário (que pode ajudar quem nunca tenha ouvido falar deste desenhador), é-nos referido que os esboços em forma de diário dos anos 1950 e 1951 "são provavelmente os mais interessantes do seu desenvolvimento artístico". De início, o diário foi escrito em português e só depois traduzido para inglês, quando o artista alcançou os 24 anos de idade. O diário pode ser lido em vários níveis. O meu Aren, que tem 8 anos de idade, interessado em arte e "jogos", sentava-se durante as suas recentes ferias até bem depois da meia-noite colado aos diários até que o sono o vencesse. Para mim, relatam a Goa de há duas gerações na perspectiva duma pessoa. Uma Goa dos últimos tempos da Administração Portuguesa, quando ninguém provavelmente imaginava quão dramaticamente as coisas estavam em breve para mudar e quando a elite Católica ainda não se sentia desafiada no seu modo de ver o mundo. Dia após dia, o Mário registava o que ele próprio e o seu grupo de amigos fazia - tocando piano e violino, viajando até Pangim, acabando bêbados junto da estátua do Abade Faria e muito, muito mais. Fotografias, esboços a cor, desenhos a preto e branco, tudo juntava charme e descrevia o mundo de Mário. Neste trabalho podemos ver uma sugestão do que muito mais tarde viria a ser o refinado humor de Mário.
Desde os desenhos simples até à banda desenhada relatando vários acontecimentos (um criado novo «desapareceu com as minhas 17 rupias”), tudo isto nos é contado. Este é o mundo da Goa antiga, aquela em que os rendeiros ofereciam ao Senhor Proprietário Mário uma refeição sumptuosa depois de o convidarem para a festa de Uddo (Rachol) na «nossa propriedade». Descreve as serenas capelas no monte e caras típicas da aldeia esboçadas em poucos traços. No mundo de Mário, toda a espécie de coisas estranhas acontecia a todo o momento. Isso era porque o artista tinha um olho especial para as captar. O novo vigário confiscou a bola de futebol. Um tambor rola pela colina a baixo e derruba uma mulher, dois padres e uma galinha! O artista mantém-se ocupado participando nas cerimónias da igreja e da capela, com toda a variedade de acontecimentos estranhos que iam acontecendo pelo caminho. Os jovens poderão ter esquecido o que eram os trajes tradicionais do 'voll'. Mas o Mário tem um desenho (na capa de 2 de Fevereiro de 1950). Ele descreve os aldeãos e os 13 cães nas suas casas. Por acaso, este livro não está paginado mas, ao estilo de diário, tem datas para cada dia do ano. Há uma secção para os «acrobatas» da aldeia e a cena do casamento de Ambora. Nada escapava ao olho de Mário. Comentava ele: “Eu tenho que dançar com diversas mulheres…senhoras baixas…senhoras altas…senhoras gordas…senhoras magras.” Mário embeleza Goa. Uma vista a partir do Monte é um instantâneo da aldeia. Uma rapariga desconhecida da aldeia - provavelmente uma pobre rendeira - parece bonita, roliça e fluente nos traços mudos de Mário. Até mesmo a sua estria duma camisa pode ser pretexto para um desenho. Os desenhos de Mário levam-nos até ao tribunal de Margão dos anos 50, a um baile do Cloube Vasco da Gama, ao carnaval e às 'cocotes' (bombas de pó). O que mais impressiona é a meticulosidade impressionante com que Mário guardou os desenhos e fotos desses tempos. Ou, alternativamente, o cuidado com que esse material foi conservado junto. Mário descreve esses tempos com detalhes - ele anota quando a sua mãe visitou a cidade (Margão ou Pangim) pela manhã. Frequentemente, tudo isto nos lembra os tempos em que Goa era ainda um local para reformados e para quem estava de férias e permanecer aqui significava umas férias intermináveis por semanas ou meses (e, por vezes, anos). Há contudo descrições de que a vida não era um picnic para todos se vaguearmos pelos comentários de criados e rendeiros. Tudo visto, esta é uma história fascinante de há duas gerações. Que Mário captou num diário desenhado e cuja importância Gerard da Cunha (agora no seu oitavo livro sobre Mário) realçou, tudo num trabalho de que Goa se pode orgulhar.

De: Maria José dos Santos Leite Na semana seguinte Francisco e Felícia foram a casa de Pedro e Inês, para os convidar a irem fazer um fim-de-semana cultural pela Velha Goa. Inês gostou muito de Felícia e viceversa, entendiam-se maravilhosamente bem, mais pareciam amigas de há muitos anos. De momentos seus maiores entusiasmos eram a troca de receitas culinárias, Felícia sabia fazer maravilhosos pratos típicos de Goa e Inês de Portugal e da região norte do Douro Litoral, em especial. Francisco era apaixonado pela medicina, pois também ele tinha terminado seu curso e também seu estágio, então ele e Pedro, sempre tinham pontos de conversa interessantíssimos pois os dois queriam tirar a mesma especialidade em medicina Felícia era professora de música. Francisco perguntou a Pedro se no fim-de-semana que se aproximava, eles podiam estar livres para a tal visita pela velha Goa, ao que Pedro e Inês responderam em simultâneo: -Totalmente livres, oh, não queremos incomodar. Felícia com seu belo sorriso respondeu:-É um prazer para nós mostrar nossa Goa. Pedro era uma amante de fotografia assim como Francisco, então ficaram de volta do computador a ver fotos de Portugal. Pedro passava as fotos, quando Francisco se deteve numa foto que ele achou muito especial. Então Pedro explicou que era o rio Douro, pouco antes de chegar à Foz, onde existe o Forte de S. João da Foz do Douro. Francisco estava encantado com a ponte, Felícia veio ver e ouvir a explicação de Pedro e este disse: - Como estão tão interessados em saber tudo sobre esta ponte da cidade do Porto, esta é a ponte de D. Luís (Rei de Portugal e assassinado juntamente com seu filho D. Carlos o herdeiro do trono, aquando da implantação da república). Depois desta ponte sobre o Douro a cidade do Porto tem em direcção à Foz a ponte Arrábida também bonita, mandada construir na época do 1º ministro Oliveira Salazar. Em direcção à nascente depois da Ponte de D. Luís tem a Ponte do Infante, a emblemática Ponte de D. Maria Pia, logo seguida da Ponte de S. João e finalmente a Ponte do Freixo, este junto da Marina do Freixo e do belo Palácio do Freixo.
O Rio Douro separa as duas cidades que sempre andaram lado a lado, como Inês diz, é a ligação entre as duas cidades irmãs que deram o nome a Portugal. Felícia curiosa perguntou: - Não sabia que o nome de Portugal tem origem no nome de duas cidades. Inês respondeu: Sim foi a antiga cidade de Portus e o aglomerado Cale do lado da margem esquerda do Rio, sempre se completaram estas duas cidades que deram o nome ao país Portucale- Portugal. Portus uma cidade com traços asturianos de 3 a 4 mil anos antes de Cristo. Foi na cidade do Porto que nasceu o príncipe D. Henrique o fundador da Escola Náutica de Sagres que Já vos falámos e foi nesta cidade que se armou a frota que tomou Ceuta aos Árabes. Diz a história que os portuenses se empenharam tanto em abastecer de alimentos as naus, entregavam toda a carne existente ficando somente com as tripas, daqui a alcunha de tripeiros aos habitantes desta cidade. Francisco num português correcto embora com muito esforço disse: - Esta foto está muito boa mesmo, então a cidade que se vê do lado esquerdo é Cale? E estes barcos são tão especiais! Inês e Pedro deram um sorriso franco e doce para eles e responderam ao mesmo tempo: -Hoje Cale é Gaia a cidade chama-se Vila Nova de Gaia! Todos sorriram e Pedro continuou: - As fotos para o primeiro texto, foram feitas por outra fotógrafa artista e poetisa, Marina Yela. Esta do rio Douro e ponte, foi por uma amiga farmacêutica, pintora e fotografa, Rosário Andrade. A parte alta do lado esquerdo nesta foto que vem aqui é a Serra do Pilar, onde existe um observatório e postos emissores. A Ponte de D. Luís verdadeira filigrana de ferro juntamente com a Torre dos Clérigos, pesava cerca de 3045 toneladas, passou a ser um pouco o emblema da cidade do Porto, e foi construída pela sociedade Belga de Teófilo Seyrig com Gustavo Eiffel. A construção foi iniciada em 1881 e a inauguração foi a 31 de Outubro de 1886. A ponte era iluminada na época por candeeiros artísticos a gás Uma ponte com dois tabuleiros, actualmente o tabuleiro superior é utilizado pela linha D do Metro do Porto e o tabuleiro inferior para peões e veículos automóveis. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Today we’re going to meet the three R’s of environment, “Reduce, reuse, recycle”. We keep hearing this over and over; we see ads on TV and hear it on the radio or see it in the newspapers or flyers. It is not humanly possible to save the entire world and protect it from further damage but it is in our hands to choose to do our part. If each one of us does our part we will be so much closer to achieving our goals. Think of innovative ways to Reuse, Reduce and Recycle. For e.g. – Chocolate boxes (Especially the Ferrero Rocher, Quality Street boxes and similar ones) can be used for jewelry boxes, tool boxes, sewing kits or simply for just storing paraphernalia. Shoe boxes can be used to store bills. Food cans (like corn beef, condensed milk etc. can be decorated and used as pencil/ pen holders. Paper plates can be turned into masks for children’s parties or Halloween, instead of buying new masks. Cornflake cartons can be cut and used to line cupboards and storage areas. Pet bottles can be turned into hedges to segregate different plants. We've listed some ideas below to get you started on reusing items. These recommendations include ideas for keeping and reusing items, and ideas for giving, sharing or donating items to others for reuse. Once you get the hang of it, you will come up with plenty of your own ideas for reuse! Here are some concepts I came across. Bottles Wash these thoroughly and reuse them. For example, you might use an old wine bottle for cooking oil/ storing Goan vinegar. Refill the bottle and keep it near the stove. It is prettier and takes up less space than an oil can Boxes If you buy things online or through catalogues keep the shipping boxes and put them in your attic or garage for storage. Use them for packing up winter or summer clothes or for shipping items to others when you mail a gift, etc. Paint Don't throw away small amounts of paint. Look at the colors you have and mix them to come up with a different shade of paint. Or use a little of each color to accent walls or paint trim. You might be surprised at the results Jars You can use jars to store leftovers, powder masalas, pastes, spices. Small Plastic Containers/ Take away containers Use takeout plastic containers or small plastic containers to send leftovers to a friend/ neighbour. You won't have to ask for the containers back, and someone else can use them to store leftovers. You can also use them to sort and store your nuts, bolts, screws and nails in your garage. Envelopes Envelopes; though now almost in extinction, can be used to store stamps, clippings, stickers, cards, cloth patches and similar items.
Plastic Bottles (Pet bottles) Rinse these thoroughly and use them as water bottles or store juice in it when you make homemade juice or concentrate. Bottles come in handy during the summer. At least you know you will always have a bottle or two of chilled water in the fridge. Cards Cards is another item that’s almost on the verge of dying out completely but it can be reused (collectively) as a collage and hung up on a wall as decoration or you can cut of the picture part and sew/ glue a blank piece of paper to it and customize it with your own words. Old shirts and tee shirts If your old clothes are too shabby to give away to unfortunate people they can be used to make a quilt if you cut them in squares and sew them together. You could also cut them into larger squares and use them as kitchen rags for drying dishes or wiping the kitchen counter and your stove, oven and other appliances. Disposable Trays There’s no need to discard disposable trays. If the trays are not cracked or broken on the first use then it can be reused till they break. In addition to reusing your own items or donating them to others to reuse, you should also consider finding old things you can reuse for your next project. You will soon learn that reusing products and items adds value for everyone. What you no longer want, someone else may find valuable. You may find things you need and want for reuse, so please check your storage and see what can be used again before you buy new stuff. It would be wise to invest in quality stuff that will last long so you will not have to keep rebuying items like containers and storage items. This way you know you will not have to clutter your space with unwanted things. It is worth noting that the amount of waste created by each person has nearly doubled in the last twenty years, increasing from 2.7 pounds per person, per day to 4.4 pounds per person, per day.
