Clearwater Minor Hockey – Beginners Hockey COME AND PLAY HOCKEY!

Why is hockey so much fun & good for you? Unlike many individual sports, hockey players must be dimensional, playing many different ways at once, thus encouraging children to learn how to play as a team, with other players and learning the art of multi-tasking to make it the best and most fun. These skills that they learn, such as respect towards others and other communities, will help as they grow and lead into adult life. The most important is that the kids are out having fun with their friends and getting the exercise they need.

4

Hockey practice starts in late September and finishes mid-March with a break at Christmas. Pre-Can and CanSkate sessions are included in the fee. No skating skills or hockey knowledge required. Equipment—Minor Hockey has full sets of equipment to rent for the season. Experienced adults will help you with fitting and answer all your questions about “how hockey works.” To sign up contact Clearwater & District Minor Hockey Association.

Raft Mountain Skating Club Raft Mountain Skating Club is a local non-profit club that was established in 1975, operated by volunteers. The club offers programs taught by a certified coach to all levels and ages of skaters. The figure skating program offers opportunities for skaters of all ages in the Clearwater District and surrounding areas to develop fundamental skating skills. There are 3 levels within the skating program: CanSkate Preschool, CanSkate and STARSkate. All levels are led by an NCCP certified professional coach. CanSkate Preschool and CanSkate levels are taught in a group format. STARSkate may provide instruction in short group sessions, but is primarily offered in private or semi-private lessons. Skaters have the opportunity to take Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized testing system.

We hope that by introducing the skills of skating at a young age in a fun and positive environment, these individuals will be active and healthy and continue to advance and learn skills that will allow them to participate in skating for life whether it is figure skating, hockey or just recreational skating for fun! Skating starts in September and runs until March. During the year, the STAR Skaters will attend a test day and one or two competitions. The club presents a year end Carnival to showcase the skills all the skaters have learned.

Wells Gray Curling Club Curling is a team sport, played by two teams of four players each on a rectangular sheet of ice. The teams take turns sliding polished stones down the ice toward a target called the ‘house’. The final positions of the stones or rocks determine the score for each end of play. Curling is a great way to get out of the house, meet old friends and make new ones. Venue: North Thompson Sportsplex Period: Two sessions run from October to December and January to March; or you can play both seasons. League play: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 7–9pm. Drop In Wednesdays at 10am. Equipment: Curling shoes and brooms, new curlers can borrow from the club. Age: 13 years and over. Join either as an individual or make a team with your friends. Be concussion smart. Don’t learn about concussions the hard way.

Your brain is the most important organ in your body, and it is yours for life. Protect your most valuable asset and wear a helmet when you are participating in various sports.

How to fit your helmet: • Every helmet should be CSA approved and be easily adjustable. It should rest half an inch above the eyebrow. • The chin strap should fit snugly under the chin; if more than one finger fits between the strap and the chin, the helmet is too loose. It is recommended, especially for younger children, to have a face mask on your helmet. This will help prevent damage to teeth, chin and mouth, common injuries in skating. BIKE HELMET

Provides protection, but not recommended for skating.

She spent over a decade training under world-class instructors and with other dedicated students from around the world. While there, she received the rank of second-degree blackbelt and contributed to a gradual and still ongoing change in traditional perceptions of the role of women in

We break down cycling into 55 skills with the focus on bike handling and fun. We use a controlled environment to build confidence and ensure riders master the basics before heading out on the trails. Students will learn the basics of: helmets, bike maintenance, braking, climbing, descending, road and trail riding/etiquette. Sprockids uses cycling as a way to develop self-esteem and empathy while providing a strong sense of belonging to a group. Most importantly, riders learn to work together respectfully, have fun and learn to love the sport of cycling.

Sprockids is not... ...a competition ...a dirt jump or downhill program ...for advanced riders

Registration opens December 12

A little bit about Sylvia… My name is Sylvia Arduini, I am a longtime resident of Clearwater, and have been interested in physical activity for much of my adult life. Jean Nelson, a VERY active local senior, is one of my role models. Last year, a friend took her Yoga instructor’s certification and said it was the best personal development she had ever given herself. I was approaching retirement and I was inspired. This spring, off to Costa Rica I went, wondering, “What am I getting myself into?!”

They say if you do something for 21 days you will form a new habit; I entered into 10 hours per day for 21 days of total Yoga immersion. This experience has led me to a new path in my life and I’m looking forward to sharing my new-found knowledge. Before I retired I was a program coordinator, so now, instead of organizing courses, I’m going to be at the other end of the spectrum… teaching. Thank you to the CRHL Program for giving me this opportunity.

Yoga has been growing in popularity over recent years and with good reason. Many wonderful health benefits can be gained simply by adding 1–2 yoga sessions to your weekly routine. Increased flexibility, stress release, pain reduction and improved sleep just to name a few.

Yogalates is a combination of Yoga and Pilates, which share many of the same principles and techniques. This class combines the best of both practices, strengthening core muscles and overall toning while increasing flexibility. This class is a wonderful and powerful way to improve core strength, posture, and body awareness.

Tai Chi Basics Inner Alchemy program is for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding with their mind/body connection on a multitude of levels. It is appropriate for all ages and all walks of life. All that is required is the desire, courage and openness needed to pursue that journey inward. Participants will learn how to find balance from within and release tension/stress which creates energetic blockages (Chi) and often leads to physical/emotional chronic pain cycles and ill health.

Postures can be modified to suit most fitness levels. Beginners welcome.

Tips to keeping your Septic Healthy! Wastewater from the house flows into the tank, the heavy solids settle to the bottom of the tank forming a layer of sludge. Grease and light solids stay on the top forming a scum layer. Natural bacteria work to break down both layers, however, not all will break down with bacteria. This creates the need for regular cleaning of the septic tank. The separated wastewater in the middle layer of the tank is pushed out into the drainfield as more wastewater enters the tank. If the wastewater doesn’t remain in the septic tank long enough, it doesn’t have time to separate and solids can be carried out into the drainfield, eventually causing the field to plug up. Regular maintenance is the key to a healthy and long lasting septic system. On average a regular household with

an 800 gallon tank (with 3 people ) should be cleaned out every 2.5 years. If you have a garbage disposal, even more often. The cost of not taking care of your system is significantly higher than the fees to clean it on a regular basis. To replace the average system will cost a homeowner anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000. Backup of septic into your home can also be very costly. It will ruin carpets, drywall, framing and can cause moulds to grow and your home to become unsafe. The best time of year to pump the tank is Summer or early Fall. This gives the tank time to re-establish the bacteria before cold weather hits. The cost of pumping your system in the winter months is significantly higher and has an impact on your system should you have a problem during cold weather.

How your septic system works: There are two main parts to your septic system:

1) tank and 2) drainfield DO’S: • Know the location of the tank and drainfield. Keep a sketch handy with your maintenance records. • Have your tank pumped out whenever it is appropriate for your system. • Keep the tank lid accessible, as well as the inspection ports. Use a riser if necessary. • Conserve water to avoid overloading the system-especially in high water table areas. • Divert other sources of water away from the septic system.

DON’T: • • • •

Drive or park on the tank or drainfield. Plant anything except grass on your drainfield. Dig in or build on top of your drainfield. Use your toilet to dispose of harmful chemicals or cleaners. They will kill the bacteria. • Allow backwash from home water softeners to enter the septic system.
