How aluminium is recycled South Hams is among the top recycling, composting and reuse districts in the country with a 54 per cent recycling rate (2012-13). Recycling process: 1. Aluminium cans are thrown in clear recycle sacks by you; 2. Sacks are collected and taken to a facility to separate the aluminium cans from the other contents; 3. Cans are baled together and sent to the re-processors; 4. In the treatment plant the aluminium is cleaned ready for reprocessing; 5. It then goes through a re-melt process and turns in molten aluminium, this removes the coatings and inks that may be present; 6. The aluminium is then made into large blocks called ingots. Each ingot contains about 1.6 million drinks cans; 7. Ingots are sent to mills where they are rolled out, giving aluminium greater flexibility and strength; 8. This is then made into aluminium products such as cans, chocolate wrapping and ready meal packaging. Facts about aluminium: Recycling one tonne of aluminium avoids the emission of about nine tonnes of CO2 emissions (just one tonne of CO2 is equivalent to driving nearly 3,000 miles). Eight billion aluminium drink cans are sold in the UK every year. A used aluminium can, can be ready for re-sale, once recycled, in around 60 days. Making one aluminium can from raw materials uses the same amount of energy as it takes to recycle 20. Recycling just one can saves enough energy to power a television for three hours. 3

Bickleigh WI Members recently enjoyed a skittles and lunch day. At our November meeting the speaker was Diana Lawer who gave a talk entitled, “Get our Skates on”. December brings us together with other Devon WIs at Exeter Cathedral for our annual Carol Service. The following week we are holding our own Christmas Party and we will be attending a New Year Lunch at the Moorland Garden near Yelverton. So after all this festive season activity our meeting on 15th January definitely needs to be on Keep-Fit and then Poetry on 19th February. Both meetings will be at the earlier time of 2.15pm at Roborough Recreation Hall. New members are always made most welcome.

Stark warning from Devon County Council Leader Devon County Council leader John Hart has issued a stark warning about the scale of the spending cuts he will have to make over the next four years. He said there can be no ‘sacred cows’ in the search for savings in the County Council’s budget. Councillor Hart will be meeting with district, town and parish councillors across the county over the coming weeks to spell out the options facing Devon. A new website has been set up for residents to communicate with the County Council at devon.gov.uk/toughchoices so that local people can have their say on the potential cuts, and for communities to come up with new ways of helping to support the services they don’t want to lose. Devon has saved £100 million over the past four years. But it now faces saving another £110 million over the next four years because the Government will have cut the financial support it gives Devon by 60 per cent in real terms from April 2011 to 2016. The latest round of spending restrictions exceed the pace of the cuts that Devon has already coped with, following the 2010 spending review, which resulted in the workforce being reduced by some 3,000 posts since 2009. John Hart said: “This is going to take tough choices. There are some very fundamental questions that we need to ask before we decide on a budget where every pound has to give us the best possible value for money.” The Government is likely to offer Devon another council tax freeze grant for next year. Alternatively, the authority could put up council tax by up to two per cent without holding referendum. That would raise around £6.6 million to support services. “Throughout all these difficult times, I will do my utmost for Devon.” 17
