Life in Shelter Have you ever wondered what Shelter life entails? A recent Shelter Home resident shared her feelings about the experience. “My thoughts of living in a shelter weren’t very good thoughts until I actually arrived at the Shelter of Caldwell County. Having bad thoughts is the reason I guess I’ve been homeless for eight years. I just stayed in abusive situations until I started having suicide thoughts... then called 911. It was the best thing I’ve done in a long while. Shelter life in my opinion isn’t bad at all. The Shelter of Caldwell County has helped me in so many ways that if I’d known about how it worked and the resources they had, I would’ve had a home of my own years ago. I actually put me here. It was up to me to call. They provided all I needed plus introduced me to a program that will get me a home. Being fifty five years old, it was the biggest embarrassment to be brought to a shelter, but everyone was kind and caring. Being around others like me (homeless) and dealing with different issues, I learned so much about domestic violence and maybe the reasons for men being cruel to women. When I first got to the Shelter I was a big mess, but I could actually breathe. I could relax eventually and just get me together. I had a nice clean room upstairs with another resident that was so helpful and sweet about answering my questions and just talking to me. I wasn’t allowed to have any girl friends while in my relationships. So, she was special to me, and I will always remember her. The staff at the Shelter actually do care about the clients and are very special people to do this job because I’m sure it can get frustrating at the Shelter. I didn’t have to watch over my shoulder, and after a few weeks I became a little more relaxed and comfortable. I got closer to God in the past two months, and I know he’s the only way to have a joyful life. They have a sexual abuse class that is Christian/spiritual based, and it’s my favorite. The classes I take at RHA have helped me learn new things, and I like them. I am so thankful for attending. I’ve prayed for guidance and to get a home of my own, and this Shelter has helped me so much. Following the rules here came so easy for me because I don’t have a problem doing the right things in life. The Shelter has actually helped me to love myself and with God’s help in my life, I feel a load has lifted from me.” Former Client

Executive Director Retiring by Sharon Poarch

“I am in the seventh year of a five year plan” I told our Board of Directors in January. “I want to retire to spend more time with my family. My last day will be May 1st.” Did you know, if you make a purchase on Amazon.com that . 5% could go to the Shelter Home? Just login at this address:

Have you ever said something and paused to wish you could take it back. That was me - when I actually said, “I’m retiring” to the Board of Directors of the Shelter Home in mid-January. The Shelter Home Board Chairman, Brent Phelps, had known my plan to retire since late last year. It was time to prepare the Board to begin the work of transitioning in new leadership for our mission. It has been my humble pleasure to serve our community and the victims of violence and abuse in our area for the last seven years. The opportunity to grow our mission in both service capacity and programmatic work has been a labor of love. Shelter Home of Caldwell County’s mission is one with a long history of compassion, service, resourcefulness, professionalism and an absolute commitment to a victim’s right to live safely without the threat of violence, abuse or intimidation. A Mission of Hope, Help and Healing was the cadence I stepped into as director in 2009, and will be so now as a new Executive Director is selected to serve by our Board of Directors and carry our mission forward. and enter the Shelter Home of Caldwell County!

I have said the hardest part in retiring is stepping away from “the work”, the cause, the commitment that is being an advocate for victims against whomsoever or whatsoever obstacles or barriers are placed in their path. There is a passion to serve and to do the right thing for those who need our help. This community has commissioned and supported the Shelter Home of Caldwell County to serve the men, women and children who need our help for almost 40 years. It is not just what “we”, the advocates, do within the shelter to serve victims, but the rich resources of people and community partners that makes our ability to provide critical services and resources so very strong and diverse. Inside St ory Hea dline

Thank you to the many individuals, churches, civic groups, businesses, foundations, funders, Volunteers and Board Members who support this very important mission in Caldwell County. I appreciate the opportunity to have been a part of the Shelter Home mission and partner with you in service to others. http://shelterhomecc.org Visit us on Facebook at Shelter Home of Caldwell County PEACEFUL

NOTES

To the women and children we have served who have most assuredly touched my life, may God Bless and keep you on a healthy path with safe and fulfilling futures. Having the opportunity to serve you has enriched my life. Thank you.

SNOW DAYS! Winter Storm Jonas came in and surprised us all in January. We loved every minute of it. From building snowmen, to scraping the parking lot (Thanks Donald and Stephanie) to sledding, to snow cream, we cherished every moment. Sometimes we all need a break and it was welcomed!

SUPPORT GROUP SESSIONS “How can I get information about Domestic Violence. What can I do as a sexual assault victim to move on with life in a healthy way. I don’t need Shelter (or maybe I do), but I need to understand and learn what a healthy relationship looks like without violence, or manipulative control, jealous rages, or damaged property or exploitation… Where is help?” Call Lily Moody, Shelter Home Program Director (828) 758-0888 or email lily.moody@shelterhomecc.org

Bob Wykcoff is really the Jack of all trades. He is what we call, our Bob the Builder. Bob can fix anything we need fixed. Bless him, because we always find a project on Pinterest we would love to see in our Shelter, and he always finds a way to make it happen. The above picture is Bob painting at the Senior Center in Lenoir. As we said, he can do anything. Thank you Bob for your service.

Support Group attendance requires contact with an advocate prior to attendance. Partner Agencies referring clients must complete an agency referral prior to client attendance. (Support Groups are available in Spanish as needed.) (Las sesiones de grupo de apoyo están disponibles en español , según sea necesario . )
