B

eing married means more than just wearing a diamond ring and having a beautiful wedding. Remember there is life after the wedding! Before you say “YES” you need to make sure this is the person YOU want to spend the rest of your life with. Now I am very aware of the tribulations that can occur that can shake up a marriage down the road. Sometimes situations can cause people to change then you must do what’s best for you. But I’m not talking about those situations, take Kim Kardashian for instance. She had doubts before she walked down the aisle but she went ahead with it because “She didn’t want to disappoint anyone”. What about because I can’t party like I used to or s/he has gained weight. Now I’m not trying to steer anyone from getting married. I love weddings and everything they represent. Just be certain that you marry for LOVE and not for fashion. Everyday won’t be fun but with love you can weather the storm together. In the vows it says“To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health” to me this is the most important part. So when he gets on one knee and asks you to marry him and you say yes, your journey begins. It’s a beautiful thing to find Love but once you find it hold on to it. While you’re dancing the night away at your reception with all your family and friends, glance across the room and find your husband/wife and whisper, “I will love you from this day forward!”

Congratulations on your Big Day! Welcome to Shades Wedding Magazine Winter Issue. Every issue that we’ve produced has been full of inspiration on decor, menus, venues, and everything else that is wedding related. We have made it our mission to provide education regarding finances, be it individual credit reports, financing your wedding, or buying your dream home. All this and everything in between has been brought forth “with sophistication and style’. We intend to continue in that vein, however we realize that we have a charge to keep. We challenge you to fortify your relationship! “It’s the falling in love that’s making me high. It’s the being in love that makes me cry.” These lyrics from the amazing Michael Jackson (I’m biased of course) ring true in all relationships. With that being said we encourage you to make those tears of joy. Keep those ‘rose colored glasses’ in your back pocket and rock them with killer heels and a smile the next time he wants to go to the sports bar for date night. Continue to provide affirmation to one another that they are still desirable, funny, brilliant, and whatever else drew them into your heart. Cherish the time that is shared with one another. Pray with and for one another. Above all be thankful! Your mate is a gift, a blessing! Being grateful is both painless and free. 8

Sarafina Dreams By: Verinia Galloway

If you love lingerie that makes you feel pretty then Sarafina Dreams is must have! Featuring everything from sexy loungewear to sensually romantic bridal nighties, designer Janet Mastaler is the perfect choice to make any bride feel pretty. Originating from Hollywood, FL Janet has been involved with lingerie since before she made her dream of being a designer a reality. Her vegetarian lifestyle and love for the environment is translated into her work giving her pieces a very organic and fluid feel. I had a chance to ask this up and coming designer a few questions and here’s what she had to say.

18

Cool Cat clutch worn Shadesby Wedding Magazine Cortnie | Winter 2012 designer

SWM: What made you interested in becoming a designer and why lingerie? SF: I really didn’t have a choice, it chose me. I’ve always been fascinated with lingerie so it was a natural transition. I was a lingerie buyer for many years and it was living a dream. How much better could it get to be able to shop and buy lingerie every day for a living. Totally awesome. Couple that with market trips to New York five times a year and it was pure heaven. SWM: What is your design process? SF: Something inspires me, it could be literally anything, a leaf, something on tv, a song; then I see it in my minds eye. From there I start to search for fabrics and d sign the body in sketches. The fabric search is my favorite part. I could spend, and often do, 8 hours a day looking at fabrics, on line and in warehouses. I love textiles. There’s something very exciting about fabric. I can’t describe it but it really makes me happy to be around. SWM: With all your experience in lingerie, what is your favorite piece to design? SF: The robe has always intrigued me. I think it says something about you. A robe can be ornate and casual at the same time. The fabric denotes everything. I have a closet full and can’t bear to part with any. They have this wonderful history. You can see a robe on everyone, man and woman throughout time. Kings, Queens, Popes, Jesus himself. It’s a standard garment that can speak volumes. SWM: Compared to a Ready to Wear designer do you think your design process is any different? SF: I’m not sure. I design to a feeling which is probably what every designer does. I always think about what the piece is saying, the story it is telling. I always want my pieces to be romantic. I don’t know if it’s different or not really. I think all designers feel the piece first. When I’m designing a new piece I see it in the photo shoot before the sample is even made. It already has a purpose. SWM: Define/describe your personal style for me? SF: Casual comfort but with a classic dominance. To me classic elegance is timeless and comfort is absolutely necessary. If I put something on and it’s not comfortable it comes right off. If there’s no suitable alternative I stay home. Being from the 60’s I have a bit of that hippie bohemian style that just never goes away. Blue jeans and t shirts, barefoot and happy. SWM: Do you have any favorite designers that inspire you? SF: So many and yes they all inspire me. My forever favorite is John Kloss from the 70’s. He embraced romantic like no other. I adore him. Others include Calvin Klein, Clovis Ruffin and Stephen Burrows. It’s a matter of making simple wonderful which I love. There are so many but I think I get more inspiration from clothing designers than sleepwear/lingerie designers. I like different and I tend to design what I don’t see, what I can’t find for myself. SWM: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years? SF: I see the Sarafina Dreams line greatly expanded and I also see having more than one label. I am currently working on another that has me sleepless. When I get an idea I can’t shake it. It’s a very good thing that I don’t require much sleep. Sleepwear, loungewear, comfort wear. I’ll never leave this area of design. I love it. You can visit her on her site at www.sarafinadreams.etsy.com

Big Day Beauty

Mane Event

By: Kobe Ellis

Your big day is fast approaching and you are looking for a classy, creative, traditional, or one of a kind hairstyle for your wedding. Why choose between one style before you know what you truly want and what will go with your overall wedding style and your dress? Your wedding day and wedding photos need to be everything you want them to be and your bridal hairstyle is so important. We at EBK Beauty understand that and we love taking care of brides and their bridal attendants and suggest you make an appointment to find a stylist who feels the same way. You should take along any designs of wedding dresses you hope to get or a picture of THE dress you have already chosen is suggested. If you feel comfortable taking in your wedding veil it would be extremely helpful when taking into consideration how to build your style around the veil to give you the dream look you want to have on your special day. Your stylist of choice should give you their time and attention to discuss your ideas, suggest a few of their own and then start trying out new styles. It may take only one visit or perhaps a few for you to make up your mind as to which style you love and want to choose for your wedding day. You may find that it is very helpful to bring along a camera to your consultation to take photos for you to share with others to help you decide. The upcoming holiday and winter season is a wonderful time to be having a wedding. The hairstyles tend to range from soft romantic curls incorporated with small braids or elaborate upsweeps with incorporated crystals to reflect the magical winter weather. If you want to make choosing your wedding hairstyle a special event to share with others then we suggest that you book a private appointment for you as well as your bridesmaids, the mother of the bride and mother of the groom, and any others. You can have the full attention of the salon and receive intimate, memorable, and fun experience to make choosing your wedding day hairstyle special. You can make this the ultimate pampering event from eyebrow threading to unique wedding day nail art, to wedding day makeup; you will get the pampered treatment you deserve and your wedding attendants will forever talk about the pampering you shared with them. If you want this service for the day of your wedding then we suggest you do a pre-wedding day event so you are assured you LOVE everyone’s look BEFORE the big day. Don’t forget to include your mate. Make your man feel special too by making sure your groomsmen are looking and feeling their best too! Make your appointment today to get the personalized attention and quality your deserve!

From His Heart

Relationship Intangibles Written by: Kenny Pugh It’s hard to believe, but even after you have acquired a Bachelors, Masters or PhD, there is still no guarantee that your relationships will be successful. Many of us have been misled into thinking that a college degree, money in the bank, corporate career and prestigious awards are the foundation of successful relationships. Living here in Atlanta after you have acquired a Bachelors, Masters or PhD, there is still no guarantee that your relationship has allowed me to witness the rise and fall of many relationships based on ‘tangible things’. With the success many women are now experiencing academically and in their careers, there is a sense of expectancy that many of them carry into personal relationships. Newsflash…the intangibles (aka little things) are what make for successful long-term relationships. Intangibles can include, but are not limited to the following: 1) caring, 2) gentleness, 3) selflessness, 4) peace, 5) patience, 6) steadfastness, etc. How many of you evaluate your potential lifemates based on the above intangible characteristics? Men with money and women with beauty are easy to find because they come in abundance. Will they be there for you when you are down and out? Will they remain with you after being laid-off from a job? Will they console you when you experience sadness in your life? Will they remain patient with you as you go through your personal growing pains? These are the questions you need to be able to answer when evaluating a potential mate. My buddy put it best a long time ago when he recommended that I only accept applications from ‘B-students’ when searching for my wife. You may be asking yourself what is a B-Student? Glad you asked. A B-student is the one who never received an abundance of attention while in school, but always did quality work on every assignment. They are the ones who didn’t receive the top academic awards, but will always be successful in everything they do. What does this mean to you? For men, A-students are the beautiful women who receive an abundance of attention everywhere they go. Many of them are only sustained by their beauty and have no self-esteem outside of their beauty. Why do men say the pretty girls bring the most drama along with them? Men say this because ‘pretty girls’ are sustained by external accolades and not internal sustained sufficiency. For women, A-students are the overachieving men who are sustained by accomplishments and public acknowledgment. They lack the sensitive character makeup needed to be successful fathers and good husbands. A-students are able to provide for you financially and can buy you some pretty awesome gifts, but in the end…many will disappoint you. The real question that you need to ask yourself is this… Would I be happy growing old with this person with no money, possessions or public acknowledgments? . Brought to you by Kenny Pugh – http://www.kennypugh.com

a pocket square. No necktie tho! For those indoor wedding of course a full suit but don't try to out dress the wedding party. Keep it simple but polished. SWM: Do you have a favorite designer? Well,,, Ahhh, wow not really!! Well wait I do like Sean John. "Diddy" as we call him has really change the face of being a African American designers. His designs are very nice are made for just right. SWM: What is a tip that you'd like to give grooms, groomsmen, or the women that are buying for suits for these men? My advice to them would be to take it seriously. This is a huge day for everyone involved and of course the main ingredient to a wedding is the wardrobe. The wardrobe needs to be well thought out and leave room for error. If there was ever a time to take wearing a suit seriously, The wedding day is time. If you get lost, Hire a stylist!!!! SWM: What is the perfect gift for the dapper gentleman? Great question! I call them "Goodie Basket" Its more or less a bag full of a man basic accessory needs. IE, A nice watch, necktie, tie pin, with some cuff links and probably some cologne to top it off. I mean who could go wrong with that! SWM: How did you get involved in the industry? Well, I'll say it's more of a way of life for me. I've always been a fashion forward person! But having the eye to create a brand for someone image is amazing. Needless to say I took that power and applied it to something and Epic Image Consulting was born. And now the new born 14th Street Fashion/Life/Legacy which is a great read might I add. LOL!!!! SWM: What staples should a man have in his closet? Hmmm!!! If I had to put it in order I would say, 2 well tailored suits. A nice metal band watch, a pair of nice casual sneakers and a couple pair of jeans... That's the short answer. LOL SWM: What is a trend that you'd like implemented in formal wear? I had to think about this one. But this very magazine is what is needed. Your magazine shines the light on how formal is represented from our culture. Not to play down any other magazine but you guys are doing a great job. You implemented what is needed for formal wear be it for men or women. SWM: What do you suggest that a man wear as a guest at a wedding? A very nice suit. depending on the location or time of year would decide if a jacket is needed. For outside weddings ditch the jacket and wear a vest with some slacks and top it off with 61 Shades Wedding Magazine | Winter 2012

SWM:. How can you upgrade your man but be subtly? This is a women best attribute, She can be sooo elusive in her approach. Sorry got lost with the question. LOL Well as you know we (men) do things to impress our lady anyway but if it's something she would like to see him wear or change in the wardrobe department, I would say present it to him in form of a gift wrapped up and all... If that doesn't work, drag that man to the nearest mall and charm your way into putting him into something you like . SWM: What's next for 14th street? 14th Street has grown so much since it's release back in April 2012, Of course the first issue was geared to the Men of Color, Up next will be 14th Street for women. Being a author has been a thrill, Allows me to show my styling brand and still be a stylist. We're blessed to have the outlet to reach so many people and show them the polished side of Urban America.

Finance

Check Please By: Nicole Ronczyk

What does the new year mean to you? Is it the time of renewal, new diet, new outlook, new honey, or new money? New money... as in tax refund. In 2012, the average tax refund was about $3,000. Most of us have already spent this amount in our head a few times. Before you write that figurative check think about the refunds of tax season past. What do you have to show for it? A car whose ‘check engine’ light stays on, a few outfits that no longer fit, or an electronic gadget or two that is now outdated. Please be advised if you are receiving a large refund check you may wish to review and adjust your federal withholding on your W-4 form. The reality of the matter is you are giving the government an interest free loan by waiting until the end of the year to get your money back. Would they do that for you? Don’t hold your breath! With that being said, we encourage you to treat this refund with as much frugalness and responsibility as you do with your regular paycheck(that is if you are fiscally responsible). Here are some great ways to put that refund to good use.

1.Invest in Yourself - Rita Chand said, “There are only seven days in the week and ‘someday’ is not one of them.” Have you been meaning to take a professional course, hire a career coach, or start your small business? Maybe your esteem is at a low point. Do you want enroll in the gym, get a trainer, or get that much needed dental work done? This is the time to seize those opportunities that will benefit you professionally or make you feel better about yourself. 2.Pay Off Some Debt- When you pay down or eliminate debt you boost your credit rating. By sending your financial institution additional funds on the balance of your mortgage or car loan you can reduce your monthly payments or at least shorten the amount of time that you will need to pay on the loan. This will help you to save money throughout the year which will certainly improve your quality of life! 3.Book a Your Vacation Early- Things come and go but memories, and instagram pictures last forever! When you book vacations in advance you have the opportunity to really research for the very best deals. Many websites and travel agencies also provide addon options for things such as car rentals, excursions, additional days, and upgrades at great price points. By taking advantage of these deals you will to charge as much your | Winter 2012 62 not need Shades Wedding Magazine

credit card and incur more debt. 4.Contribute to an IRA- Assuming you want to eventually retire, it may be wise to start planning for that time. Investment Retirement Accounts (IRA) can be started at just about any financial institution. IRA’s are established so that you can save for your golden years, let’s face it- Social Security is not going to take care of you. There are three types of Investment Retirement Accounts-Rollover, Roth, and Traditional. Speak to an investment professional about your goals and which type of IRA is best for you. 5.Establish an Emergency Account- It has been said that most families are one emergency away from financial ruin. Don’t let this be said of your family. Loss of job, illness, car troubles, or natural disasters can deplete your bank account quicker than you know it. Visit your local credit union or bank and set up a high interest savings account or CD to provide you additional peace of mind. It is recommended that you have at least 6 months salary put to the side. Remember ‘it’ can happen to you. Use this new money to develop a new mindset when it comes to your finances. Be fiscally responsible and allow this money to work hard for you so that you don’t have to work as hard.
