Love Note

What does being Married mean? B

Editorial Director Lakeisha Griffin

Executive Editor

eing married means more than just wearing a diamond ring and having a beautiful wedding. Remember there is life after the wedding! Before you say “YES” you need to make sure this is the person YOU want to spend the rest of your life with. Now I am very aware of the tribulations that can occur that can shake up a marriage down the road. Sometimes situations can cause people to change then you must do what’s best for you. But I’m not talking about those situations, take Kim Kardashian for instance. She had doubts before she walked down the aisle but she went ahead with it because “She didn’t want to disappoint anyone”. What about because I can’t party like I used to or s/he has gained weight. Now I’m not trying to steer anyone from getting married. I love weddings and everything they represent. Just be certain that you marry for LOVE and not for fashion. Everyday won’t be fun but with love you can weather the storm together. In the vows it says“To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health” to me this is the most important part. So when he gets on one knee and asks you to marry him and you say yes, your journey begins. It’s a beautiful thing to find Love but once you find it hold on to it. While you’re dancing the night away at your reception with all your family and friends, glance across the room and find your husband/wife and whisper, “I will love you from this day forward!”

Congratulations on your Big Day!

Engaged!

Adesanya & Awoniyi Photographer: Lucia Belle Photography Wedding Planner: Shenika Mays Wedding Date: August 25, 2012

Theirs is a love story that began overseas and was celebrated this spring with an engagement session at the Historic and newly renovated John Marshall Hotel in Richmond, Virginia. Bolanle and Dayo will be married this month in Los Angeles and their love story can best be represented by a passport. In May 1999, they first met in Lagos, Nigeria and they would soon find that country lines and borders would do little to stop their growing relationship. When Dayo moved to Florida the following year and Bolanle found herself heading to London though, they weren't sure if they could last. However, it wasn't long before life would relocate Bolanle to California. With the move bringing her stateside, they decided to make things work. It's 10 years in already and they're still going strong - so much so that Dayo dropped to one knee and asked Bolanle for her hand in marriage. And now an African ceremony and reception is planned for this summer. When Bolanle asked for an elegant and regal setting for their engagement session, the John Marshall Hotel came to mind first. in history and culture and| it's setting was the perfect venue to let the love between Bolanle and Dayo shine 8 It's rich Shades Wedding Magazine Fallgorgeous 2012

The Elizabeth Clutch

SWM: How did you become involved in fashion and why clutches? CE:I've always been into fashion. I grew up watching my grandmother make clothes, drapes, reupholster furniture and many other things. I thought I wanted to become a Physical Therapist and received a BS in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland, College Park. It wasn't until it hit me that I would really like to work in the fashion industry. Not long after I graduated I moved to California where I attended the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising where I received my second degree. I worked in retail for years, but it wasn't enough for me. I found myself with a lot of time on my hands last summer and decided it that it was finally time to learn how to sew. I really wanted my grandmother to teach me and she was more than happy to show me how. It occurred to me that it would be cool to make a clutch. I knew exactly the kind I wanted to make. I always had an idea of the type of clutch I had wanted to own (large in size, fun details and unique), but could never find any while out shopping. Again, my grandmother was more than happy to show me how to do it. We went and picked out fabric and spent hours working on a couple. A week after learning how to sew I was selling my clutches on Etsy. I started with just 3 clutches. Today, almost a year later, I'm up to 40. SWM: Where do you draw your inspiration? CE: I draw inspiration from everywhere and every thing. Trends for Spring/Summer were major inspirations. The neons, pastels and animal prints were big. I've really gotten into adding different elements, such as spikes. I literally have to write my ideas down. I can come up with one at any time. SWM: What sets your clutches from other brands?

11

Shades Wedding Magazine | Fall 2012

CE:The prints I use are different from clutches I've seen. The market is saturated with the basic black clutch or other solid colors. While those come in extremely handy at times, my clutches are definitely statementmaking. The linings are also a lot of fun. A lot of people believe that no one really sees the inside of a bag, but they do and the owner does, as well. I think details are so important. They're also large in size. I like being able to carry a pair of flats if I'll be wearing heels for a long period of time, my wallet and not just credit cards or cash and even a bottled water or umbrella if necessary. SWM: Who is your customer and what does carrying your clutch say about her? CE: My customer is someone who is stylish and confident. My clutches aren't your average so the woman carrying it appreciates something unique. SWM: Where do you see your brand in the next five years? CE: I definitely want to grow my brand. I want everyone to know what Love,Cortnie is. Right now my bags are being carried in a few boutiques. So hopefully in the next 5 years I will expand to more and are carried in major stores across the country.

Runway Ready

Big Day Beauty

Plastic Surgery

By: Kobe Ellis

The perfect nose, hair transplants, smaller waist lines, flatter tummies, trimmer arms, larger calves, whiter, straighter teeth. The numbers of pre – wedding nips and tucks are on the rise. Brides and grooms everywhere are turning to cosmetic surgery to secure their wedding day body couture. Modern day medicine, and technology coupled with supply and demand have resulted in countless options to achieve our desired look quickly. We can have curvier hips, rounder butts, and killer abs in a matter of hours. Gone are the days when any related procedure costs a small fortune. The days of major invasive surgery are numbered. There is a plethora of Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures that produce the same if not better results than major invasive procedures. Minimal procedures are becoming more popular and more accessible to the average person choosing to improve his or her appearance. To name a few, Light based therapies, radio frequency, cosmetic tattooing, non-ablative lasers, acoustics waves, a range of chemical peels surgical treatments that can be performed under local anesthesia. For a total list of alternative options, you have only but to visit a Medi-Spa. Not all Medi Spas offer the same procedures so it is always best to shop around and feel comfortable with the information you have collected, before deciding which procedure is best for you. As always, conduct detailed research on the procedures, spas and doctors you choose to help you look “Runway Ready on your big day! Cosmetic surgery is most attractive because it not only gets you through your wedding day but beyond as most procedures produce permanent results. Both dieting and exercising are affective until you abandon the practice. However, if you marry cosmetic procedures with healthy dieting and exercise, Viola! You can be runway ready for life!

By: Nicole Ronczyk Looking for chic, one of a kind invitations for your wedding and or bridal shower? Well look no further than Kerry’s Papery! From classic and elegant to the fun and whimsical, owner Kerry Millhiser creates custom stationery such as save-the-date cards, invitations, place cards, programs that will leave your guest in awe! This is accomplished through one on one consultations with the bride in which budget and atmosphere are discussed. You can’t get this at the run of the mill companies who are just thinking of numbers. In this day and age where everything is rushed and customer service is almost non-existent, it is quite refreshing to do business with a company who understands that “It’s the little things” that make all the difference! Here are a few tips to keep in mind while selecting your one of a kind invitations from Kerry’s Papery. I.However cliche, you get what you pay for. It is of the utmost importance to select good quality paper. It is best to select paper that is thick for a few reasons. If you are sending invitations out across the country via US mail it is handled by several people and machines. If you choose to go with paper that is thin it is likely to get bent or torn. Also, low quality paper has a tendency to smudge with certain types of ink. II.Your love story is unique, therefore your invitation should reflect that! Custom invitations, place cards, and programs add the special touch to your momentous occasion. Stock invitations are standard and down right boring and your love story is anything but! III.Customize down to the letter! Your message of love is provided through text. Printing plays a huge role in having great invitations. Your invitations can be printed with letter pressing, engraving (and embossing, which is engraving without the ink and creates a beautiful raised quality to the paper) and foil stamping. IV.Final touch: Accessories!. 3-D is a huge trend with invitations. You can add little touches like crystals, shells, ribbons and more to make your invitation a piece of art!

22

Your wedding is a momentous occasion that is to be remembered for weeks, months and even years, if not a lifetime. Choosing the right wedding invitations can be a daunting task, and so many places have the typical invitations that you see everywhere else. Shade’s Wedding Magazine recognizes that Kerry’s Papery lives up to our motto. They go the extra mile to “educate and inspire Shades Wedding Magazine | Fall 2012 with sophistication and style”!

Porsche and William are a young couple madly in love. His eyes sparkled as he waited for her by the alter and she could not hold back the tear of joy while exchanging vows. The couple choose to create a sand vessel - and of course the color of the wedding was beautifully represented. The guests blew bubbles as soon as the couple was pronounced man and wife. After the ceremony, Porsche and Steven escaped for a few short moments to enjoy the walk around the lovely garden, take some photos, and realize the importance of the moment. The wedding was lovely, with an outdoor ceremony held at the Tuscan garden. The turquoise color of the wedding was present in every detail. 43

Kamisha & Adrian High Point, NC * June 9th

Photography by Glessner Photography The Loft at Union Square

She loves all things pink, glitter, and girly, and he loves her. Not because she loves those things, but because she is confident in herself, her likes and dislikes, and her love for him. Adrian and Kamisha met seven years ago, while both donning those red uniforms so infamously known to Target. A friend started the wheels turning in Kamisha's head that she and Adrian should be together, and after having his eye on her for awhile, Adrian worked up the nerve to ask Kamisha out on a date. It was obvious to their friends and family that this was something special, and eventually, Adrian asked Kamisha to be by his side forever, complete with the self-professed mushy-gushy, romantic proposal. Their event, like them, was colorful and fun, a true reflection of Kamisha and Adrian's personalities. The wedding, planned and coordinated by Veronica of Behind the Scenes, Inc. and held at a former textile mill in furniture capital of the world High Point, NC, featured a mix of elegant tradition and modern style. The beautiful ceremony backdrop was created by placing more than 80 white candles inside wooden bookcases, and the clean and classic reception included lovely multi-colored floral centerpieces. The couple opted for a First Look, and following a crowd-pleasing choreographed first dance, the bride donned a cute and sassy cocktail dress for her reception. The reception also featured the ever popular dessert bar, complete with a Southern staple, banana pudding by the nationallyknown Maxie B's Bakery, served in martini glasses. 47 Shades Wedding Magazine | Fall 2012

Pearl and Jeff have been together since the beginning of college. They met in San Diego where Jeff took Pearl on their first date at Coronado Beach. A few years later, he proposed, and the wedding planning was set in motion. earl was one of the most beautiful brides that we have ever seen. She also took the time to plan out every detail of her wedding. Her and Jeff wrote their own vows, and both had trouble fighting back the tears as they were saying them to each other. When the ceremony was over, we had the opportunity to photograph Pearl and Jeff's formals. We absolutely loved Pearl's orange bouquet, as well as the rest of the orange decorations. To prepare for the big day, Pearl and Jeff took ballroom dance classes every day. They wowed the entire audience, including myself with impressive dance choreography. We utilized Jeff's "Dip" for a stunning creative light portrait at the end of the night.

From his Heart Dear Ladies,

Soul’y For Women Written by: Enitan Bereola, II

A smiley face text message from him is the new love letter. If you’re a product of the late 90’s, the likelihood of you experiencing an intimate handwritten note is as low as a lace-front hairline. The “Love Letter” is the most abandoned, underrated and rare written communication never written. After watching a train wreck last night – I mean an episode of “Bad Girl’s Club,” I realized that women across the world need some serious love. Not the gets-you-pregnant-kind of love; rather that tender love that only a brother or father could give. This is my Love Letter: Soul singer Bruno Mars was speaking for all men when he said, “When I see your face / There’s not a thing that I would change / Cause you’re amazing just the way you are.” But with 18 year olds having Botox parties, breast implants and tummy tucks nationwide, it’s tough for most women to believe they’re even halfway decent the way they are. “If perfect’s what you’re searching for then just stay the same.” Music, movies and magazines have skewed your perception of beauty. Each channel you flip and page you turn, you’re either witnessing an airbrushed woman or a made-up one. Tyra Banks proved this truth on an episode of her talk show by proudly revealing her damaged hair and a hardly recognizable face without make up. Maybe it’s make-believe, I mean Maybelline. She even admitted to having cellulite under those tight jeans she wears. We don’t want our lady Photoshopped – give us your flaws and we’ll touch you up. If you’re willing to learn, we’ll teach you to embrace your imperfections because when you love you, we love you. Drake said, “Sweat pants, hair tied, chillin’ with no make-up on / That’s when you’re the prettiest I hope that ya’ll don’t take it wrong” because he understands the concept of beauty. Beauty is because it is. Beauty doesn’t try; it’s externally reflected from the internal. Beauty is uncontrollable and in its most natural state, beauty is you. You were born beautiful – it’s your choice to accept or deny it. A big heart serves more purpose than a big booty. Matthew 6:25 says, “The important things in life aren’t things …” Expensive bags, excessive make-up, successful men, nails done, hair done and everything did won’t make you beautiful. Somewhere along the way, you lost your attractive innocence. Daddy might have left you, mother may have neglected you, and your man may have beaten you. Abandonment may have made you believe the lie that you’re not amazing just the way you are. You can’t fill a void with things. Only love can fill your void and love makes you beautiful. “You are beautiful no matter what they say / Words can’t bring you down / You are beautiful in every single way.” – Christina Aguilera Gentlemen, this is for you: I know some of you snuck off and read this and I don’t blame you, so listen up. Just because she’s yours doesn’t mean she knows you still think she’s beautiful. Reassurance is your relationship insurance – pay weekly. A woman has to battle daily thoughts of not being enough, no longer satisfying us, not being attractive enough and another woman stealing our attention. Secure her, no make-up, the pure her. A woman is beautiful art – go to an art show and gaze; leave your praise in the comment box to remind her she’s amazing … just the way she is.

Finance

Honeymoon

or

House

By: Nicole Ronczyk Every T has been crossed, every i has been dotted, and every check has been signed. The wedding is on auto-pilot and all has been taken care of. Or has it? Head to the airport or to Home Depot.....decisions decisions! In these tough economical times one may automatically think of using the money that you would use for a honeymoon and/or elaborate reception to purchase a home because it is more practical. However, a honeymoon isn’t supposed to be practical! It is a time that is set aside to reflect, recharge, and connect on a deeper level. You only live once and life has a tendency to get in the way. Conversely, when a couple decides to get married their train of thought shifts. It is no longer “I” but “we”, it is now “us” not “them”. Home ownership falls right in line with this concept. It gives you and your mate the sense of stability and security. The mortgage is an investment in your future. The real question is are you ready for all that comes along with home ownership. Financial strain is certainly not the way to start off your union! When considering whether you make the jump into home-ownership or go bungee jumping consider these few things:

•Do you plan on staying put? With the state of the market, you may end up losing money if you sell too soon. If you are not certain whether you will wish to remain in the area for least a few years, then owning is probably not for you, at least not yet. •How is your credit looking? More than likely you will need to take out a mortgage to buy a house. Therefore, it is very important that your credit is as clean as possible. Your rates depend on it! •How much of a house can you afford? This is not the time to keep up with the Kardashians! The rule of thumb is that you can buy a house that runs about two-and-one-half times your annual salary. Additionally, there are tons of calculators available online that you can enter in your income, debts, and expenses to calculate what you can afford realistically afford. •Have you done your homework? Does the area that you are wishing to live in have good schools? What are the homes selling for in the area? Have you found a good home inspector? How far is the commute to work? All these things are of the utmost importance. Keeping the lines of communication is paramount. Discuss long term and short term financial goals and revisit them often to check progress or changes. This will strengthen your bond and isn’t that REALLY what’s really important? When it is all said and done, it is the memories that you cherish. Whether you make them in a house, apartment, or a beach....Carpe Diem! 65

Fall is here! You know what that means great food, family, changing of leaves, football....Did we say food?! Do you need a menu for your first Thanksgiving feast or do you want to prepare a special Sunday dinner as a precursor to the holiday season? We have you covered. Cornish Hens Ingredients •2 Cornish hens •1 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon black pepper •1/4 cup Dijon mustard •1 (8.8-ounce) package wild rice, prepared according to package instructions •1 cup dry white wine Directions: 1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a 7- x 11-inch baking pan with cooking spray. 2.Rub Cornish hens evenly with salt, pepper, and mustard; place in prepared baking dish. Fill each cavity equally with cooked rice. Pour wine into baking dish and cover tightly with aluminum foil. 3.Place in oven and bake 35 to 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15 to 20 more minutes, or until golden. 4.Serve whole or cut each hen in half. Spoon pan drippings over hens and serve.

Perfect mashed potatoes Ingredients •1-1/2 pounds Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and quartered lengthwise •1/2 teaspoon salt •4 tablespoons heavy cream •2 tablespoons butter •1 tablespoon milk •Salt and pepper to taste Directions: 1.Put potatoes into a saucepan. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add water until the potatoes are covered. Honey Balsamic Green Beans Ingredients •16 ounces green beans •1 tablespoon olive oil •1 clove garlic, minced •1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar •1 teaspoon honey •1 teaspoon onion powder •Salt and freshly cracked black pepper Directions: Bring a large pot of water to a boil over medium heat. Add the beans and blanch them for 2 minutes. Immediately remove the beans from the water and add them to an ice bath to stop the cooking process. Drain. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and green beans. Cover, and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Uncover, then stir in the vinegar, honey, onion powder, and salt and pepper, to taste. Cook to desired degree of doneness, about 4 to 6 minutes. Transfer the beans to a serving bowl and serve.

Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Pie Ingredients •2 cups peeled, cooked sweet potatoes •1 1/4 cups sugar •1/2 stick melted butter •2 eggs •1 teaspoon vanilla extract or 1 to 2 tablespoons bourbon •1/4 teaspoon salt •1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon •1/4 teaspoon ground ginger •1 cup milk •9-inch unbaked pie crust •3 egg whites Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. For the filling, using an electric hand mixer, combine the potatoes, 1 cup of the sugar, the butter, eggs, vanilla, salt, and spices. Mix thoroughly. Add the milk and continue to mix. Pour the filling into the pie crust and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. Place the pie on a rack and cool to room temperature before covering with meringue. For the meringue, using an electric mixer, beat the egg whites until soft peaks form; beat in the remaining 1/4 cup sugar 1 tablespoon at a time. Continue beating until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is glossy and stiff, but not dry. With a rubber spatula, spoon the meringue onto the pie, forming peaks. Make sure the meringue touches the crust all around. Sprinkle with a pinch of granulated sugar. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until delicately browned. Cool and serve.

Travel

Destination... Luxembourg By: Nicole Ronczyk

Looking for a place that boasts majestic castles, quaint bistros and/or vibrant night-life? Well luckily Shades Wedding Magazine has done the legwork for you! The best things sometimes come in small packages. That expression certainly holds true when referencing the elegant city of Luxembourg. Nestled between Belgium, France, and Germany; it is one of the smallest countries in the world. Don’t let Luxembourg’s stature dissuade you from spending your honeymoon there. Trust us, Luxembourg has something for everyone! For those who had the fairytale wedding, you’ll appreciate the country’s picturesque capital, Luxembourg City. The city is bursting with castles, plush forests, and enchanting vineyards . Take an outing and visit Luxembourg’s Le Natur Musee Au Grund (The Museum of Natural History). Peruse the collection of archaeological artifacts, classical and modern art that are housed there. Be sure to also check out Luxembourg’s folklore and living culture from the 16th to the early 20th century. Absolutely captivating and awe-inspiring to say the least! Were you talked out of your dream wedding in Vegas to appease your parents? Well fret not, you can still bring your marriage in with a bang! While Luxembourg City is no Vegas, it certainly has it’s share of bars and clubs to satisfy those who love the nightlife. Do you love Latin music? Well stop in at El Compañero, where they play everything from merengue to reggaeton. Better yet, head over to Rue Emile Mousel. This is a fairly new strip that is lined with bars and restaurants that range from the chic to relaxing. Are you a “foodie”? Considering it’s location, it’s obvious that the cuisine of this country is heavily influenced by their neighbors France, Germany, and Belgium. In the mood for French cuisine, the Chiggeri restaurant is certainly a great place to dine. Located atop a cliff, this restaurant will satiate your cravings while you enjoy the breathtaking views. Also, be sure to enjoy a glass or two of wine or beer that is produced locally.

Happy Medium Would you, should you....Change for your mate? (I.e. Clothing, weight..)

Sarah: It depends on why they are asking you to change. If its something that could make your relationship stronger, why not? It also depends on if they would be willing to do the same for you if asked.

Bee: If it benefits me and will improve my way of life. I’m always open to being better. That’s how we grow.

Regina: My mate and I have been together almost 8 years. The only thing he has asked of me its too ensure I’m healthy mentally, physically & spiritually so that I’m alive long enough to help when our grandchildren decide to make an appearance. As far as showing cleavage etc, that is what got his attention, so he likes it. He know everyone can look but only he can touch. P.S I know when things aren’t and are appropriate, so its all GOOD

Demarus: I’m pretty amazing so I expect her to do the same.

Jillian: No problem with a little change. You don’t want to become so comfortable ie homely that you have lost your appeal. I would appreciate it if my babe said “Hey go out and buy some new clothes try something a little different”

Marcus: For my WIFE...Maybe, anyone else needs to just love me for me!

Happy Medium: So you want the perfect mate? Guess what so does your partner!

Some say if you love your mate, take them as they are. On the contrary, when you love someone you want the very best for them. Accept them as they are but encourage them to be their best SELF. When one decides to ‘change’ they must unlearn years of behavior and alter their train of thought. It is a major undertaking! Ask only what you are willing to give. Demonstrate a willingness to change. The centralized theme in ‘Happy Medium’ is always communication! Express to your partner that you are committed to mutual growth. While they are on their journey to the prototype spouse, work on YOURSELF!THIS, should help you all reach a Happy Medium. 76
