B

eing married means more than just wearing a diamond ring and having a beautiful wedding. Remember there is life after the wedding! Before you say “YES” you need to make sure this is the person YOU want to spend the rest of your life with. Now I am very aware of the tribulations that can occur that can shake up a marriage down the road. Sometimes situations can cause people to change then you must do what’s best for you. But I’m not talking about those situations, take Kim Kardashian for instance. She had doubts before she walked down the aisle but she went ahead with it because “She didn’t want to disappoint anyone”. What about because I can’t party like I used to or s/he has gained weight. Now I’m not trying to steer anyone from getting married. I love weddings and everything they represent. Just be certain that you marry for LOVE and not for fashion. Everyday won’t be fun but with love you can weather the storm together. In the vows it says“To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health” to me this is the most important part. So when he gets on one knee and asks you to marry him and you say yes, your journey begins. It’s a beautiful thing to find Love but once you find it hold on to it. While you’re dancing the night away at your reception with all your family and friends, glance across the room and find your husband/wife and whisper, “I will love you from this day forward!”

Congratulations on your Big Day!

Spring is time to renew, reflect, and rejuvinate. Over the course of time we all

have fallen into “ruts” whether it’s in your workout, professional life, or relationship. As Spring flowers begin to bloom, take a queue from nature and break away from the monotony of life. A great way to keep your relationship fresh is to keep YOURSELF fresh. A part of what attracted you to each other is that you were interesting individuals. You had your own interests, friends, and outlooks on life. It is perfectly healthy for couples to have their own passions. It allows them to get excited about sharing one another. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing the one you love with a sparkle in their eye while catching you up on the days events. When is the last time that you nurtured your spirit? When is the last time you learned a new (non-work related) skill? When is the last time you purchased a piece of great lingerie? It’s time! While it is Spring, this is Shades Wedding Magazine’s “Vintage Issue”. Vintage, used as an adjective means : Characterized by Excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; Classic. That is what type of wedding and marriage inspiration we pray that you receive from this issue. It is important that you look and feel your best so that you can give your best. Isn’t the love of your life worth that? We think so! Be Inspired May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.

One-on-One with

Vintage Textile Pixie

By: Verinia Galloway

Hailing from Michigan, Rebecca spent most of her life in metro Detroit. Raised by her mother who was a lifelong seamstress, Rebecca’s job experience ranges from retail to music to healthcare to academia and she’s even a ordained clergy! While working as an adjunct, and attempting to finish her finish her Ph.D. in Theology and Ethics, her mother passed away. Her mother left a legacy of hundreds of sewing patterns and thousands of yards of fabric plus some nice costume jewelry. Thus the birth of Vintage Textile Pixie! This multifaceted talent not only sews, crochet, and knits, she also find time to spin her own yarn. Refurbishing everything from old sewing machines to her Edwardian home Rebecca is all about Loving, Living, and Redeeming. I got the chance to speak with her about her passion. Here’s what she had to say.

16

Shades Wedding Magazine | Fall 2012

SWM: What is your definition of Vintage? VTP: I’m not ready to call anything after about 1979 vintage. The 1980s were not my favorite era (I’ve never recovered from all of the mauve), and it’s difficult to call vintage that which you’re still using – like when my mechanic told me it would take an extra day to get the part for my 1994 Tracer wagon because he now had to pull from vintage stock. That was freaky! SWM: That’s funny. I can totally agree with you. The vintage items that you do sell how do you go about selecting them? VTP: When I first opened my shop on Etsy, I tried to replicate the same range of items that my sister and I had had in our bricks and mortar antique booth in order to test the Etsy waters. But primarily due to issues surrounding shipping, I realized quickly that I needed to narrow my focus. Obviously, I want my items to sell, so I’m always looking at my shop stats and looking for trends – not that I’ll follow them – but I’m aware of them because the bottom line is this: I like to stock my shop with things that are appealing to my customers as well as to me. In general, those items tend to be from the first half of the 20th century. Above that, if I had to break it down into keywords, I’d say that I look for items that are beautiful, useful, and fun. When you think of the Vintage Textile Pixie, you should think of lovely items that make you smile.

VTP: The initial sorting is no problem. But after that, it can tedious and a strain on my eyes especially if looking for flaws in jewelry. My LED lit loupe goes wherever I do. Since I tend to stock jewelry up through the 1960s, the original owners are now pretty much all deceased. This means finding new items second or third hand. The more hands, [on each piece] the more potential for damage. SWM: Finally I always close with a question about where the business owner sees themselves and their business in the future. So do you see this as just a hobby or do you see yourself growing Vintage Textile Pixie? VTP: Although there is much about my shop that is enjoyable enough to become a hobby (almost!), this very much is my business. It’s what helps pay the bills. With antiques and vintage items, there is an inherent obstacle to growing the business: the uniqueness of the products. Thus, each item has to have its own set of photos and description, which means dealing in vintage is quite labor intensive. Most of my colleagues obtain assistance from family members – an option I’m working on!

SWM: Are any of your pieces “vintage inspired” or are they authentic? VTP: [That’s a] great question and harder to answer than you might think due to the need to repair items. Let me give you an example: I find a 1960s bead necklace in pieces. I bring it home, clean it, and find that some of the beads are missing and half of the findings are broken. I add some beads of the same type and era but use some newer findings for the fasteners. Is it still a 1960s necklace? Is it still vintage? These are questions that each seller has to answer for him or herself… Nonetheless, in my shop, you’ll find that the overwhelming majority of my items have minimal alterations done to them (everything is cleaned, and jewelry is always sanitized) – so yes, authentic. SWM: Once you find the right pieces how hard is it to actually sort through them?

Big Day Beauty

The Eyes Have it...

By: Kobe Ellis

Your big day is approaching and and you’ve round up every fashion magazine on the shelves, have scoured the net for trends, pictures, and references, looking for the ‘perfect’ look that will have your wedding guests tearing and your honey beaming. What have you come up with? Well, According to some beauty blogs and beauty freelancer writers, the buzz for the latest and greatest beauty trend for 2013 is all about wearing eyelash extensions. Wearing false or fake eyelashes is not new but the latest technique of individually applied eyelashes that last for weeks is catching on big! Celebrities, artists, models, business women, college women, and housewives are all sporting the flirty lashes. The technique should be done by anesthetician or trained cosmetologist. If you decide to give the new look a chance then make sure you do your homework and choose the proper specialist. It is best to make sure you choose the right person to handle your eyelash extensions or you will lose out on the true experience and look of having properly applied extensions. Done right and the look is fabulous.

22

Shades Wedding Magazine | Fall 2012

Choose the wrong salon or person to do your extensions and you may see a difference but the possibility of what you could have looked like is missed. Worst case scenario and you could get a clumped mess. You should leave the experience with lashes that look natural, full, thick and fabulous. You should also be properly educated on how to care for your new eyelash extensions. They can last the lifespan of a real eyelash, which is 4-6 weeks, if cared for properly. Think of the time it can save not having to put on coats of mascara or daily applying eyelash strips. You wake up 24/7 with a full set of flirty, beautiful eyelashes framing your eyes. Now we need to discuss the next part of your eyes that can never be ignored – the eyebrows. If the eyebrows are not sculpted correctly or worse completely ignored, then it doesn’t matter how thick and flirty your eyelashes look. Consider your eyes the beautiful artwork by the Master, the eyelashes the “mat frame” to set the artwork perfectly and the eyebrows the “frame” itself. To show off the perfect piece of art you have to have the mat and frame and the same is true of your eyes. It is important that your eyebrows are perfectly arched. They should begin and end at a precise point according to the shape of your eye. If the eyebrow is too arched, too long, too high, too short or too dark then the effect can leave someone looking shocked, intrigued, or comical due to the expression the eyebrows portray. However, the perfect eyebrow can make a woman look glamorous, beautiful and even more youthful ....leaving no dry eye in the building!

Mike and I met at a mutual friend's birthday party in March 2010 when he asked me about the tattoo on my wrist, and we immediately hit it off. We went out to dinner the next weekend and then spent every weekend together after that, laughing and just enjoying each other. In July 2011, Mike asked me to be his wife while in Santa Barbara for my birthday weekend! Mike and I both share a love for Disneyland, so spending a few hours in the park each month is one of our favorite dates. I knew I wanted to incorporate small bits of Disney detail in our wedding, so I decided to have each reception table labeled with a couple from a famous Disney movie. I also made Mickey Mouse heads using styrofoam balls and black paint to place in each floral centerpiece. There is something so timeless and classic about Disney, I felt it was the perfect touch to our fairytale day! 40 Shades Wedding Magazine | Fall 2012

Photography by Allen Taylor Photography Ponte Family Estate Winery

This wasn’t the first time we have had the pleasure of visiting Ponte Winery and we hope it isn’t our last. This beautiful venue is surrounded by 300 acres of vineyards and lush gardens. It is tranquil and romantic, a perfect backdrop for Kohei and Anri’s perfect wedding. Did I say PERFECT? YES! This wedding was PERFECT in every way – from the most ‘kawaii’ (Cute in Japanese) bride to the handsome groom, not to mention the great-looking bridal party and guests! This is one gorgeous wedding! Wanting to give the wedding a special touch, many of the details for the wedding where put together personally by Anri and Kohei. It worked. From the rings, to her own nails, and the trail mix for guests for the ride home after all it was all over.Even the seating charts were special and unique. Each table represented a place where Koehi and Anri had been to on trips together. Adorned with a photograph of them at that place to seemingly point everyone in the right direction. Also, Anri’s mother not only took lessons to learn how to make it for her daughter’s special day, but also had to be certified and pursued a license so that it could be served at the wedding. A touching gift made with lots of love that even featured their pets. We have not seen a more energetic and great wedding party than these fun people. It was not possible to stop laughing, smiling, and talking taking their photographs. The guys had custom made Nike sneakers with their initials and wedding date embroidered right on them and the girls were simply gorgeous. We adored and loved capturing Kohei and Anri’s wedding. A passionate couple, along with wonderful friends and family you will have trouble finding anywhere else. 44

From his Heart

Chilvary is for Ladies, Too... Written by: Enitan Bereola, II If I were to read this title in front of a room full of feminists, I might get more boos than a polygamist.

•When it’s cold and your man offers you his jacket, offer him your scarf…or a hug to keep him warm.

Chivalry is a term often debated and sometimes hated with a meaning no one seems to agree upon, kind of like the N-word. Historically, chivalry originated between the 11th and 15th centuries as a knight’s moral code to protect those who couldn’t protect themselves (children, elders and widows). The definition has since dropped its original intent and simply means the respect and honor of women. However, some view chivalry as an insult to women. When you look at its original definition coupled with its current meaning, it can seem that it’s indeed suggesting women are helpless and dependent on men. And that’s where the problem lies. Chivalry was originally intended for babies and kids, old people, and women whose husbands had died. During this time period, husbands were the sole providers for their families and if they perished, assistance was needed. People are mixing one part of an old definition with another part of the current one. We know women are capable of the same survival skills as men. Chivalry isn’t about male dominance.

•If your man has been an amazing partner, take him out on a date and attempt to pay.

There is something deep-rooted about the state of men and women today. Only pain would allow us to disrespect and hate the very thing we want. In the 21stcentury, chivalry should just mean honoring the opposite sex. In relationships, chivalry shows a mutual respect for your partner. In everyday life, chivalry strengthens male/females relations. Whether or not you believe in gender roles, they shouldn’t shape social norms around courteous behaviors. Holding doors open in 2012 is more about courtesy and less about helping the defenseless. Courteous behavior isn’t limited to men. Chivalry is for ladies, too. Here are six easy ways a lady can be chivalrous: •After we open your car door and let you in, lean over and push the driver’s side door open. It’s a literal thank you, a reciprocating gesture that shows equal respect. •If you’re on the driver’s side and we pump your gas, wait until we walk around to the passenger’s side of the car before you start the en62 Magazine | Fall gine so theShades exhaustWedding fumes don’t get all over us.2012

•If he cooked the meal, do the dishes. •If a stranger is struggling for the door, prop it open. Chivalry is a lifestyle that says, ‘I understand your value and acknowledge your worth.’ Chivalry isn’t for applause, but when someone displays an honorable gesture toward another, a signal of appreciation is warranted. Though it’s not required, a simple “thank you” is common practice. If you believe the golden rule is to treat others like you want to be treated, you can take it a step further by reciprocating with an equally kind action. Gentlemen, this is for you: You can’t just put meat in the oven without heating the oven up first. Chivalry is foreplay. It’s dumb to demand intimacy but disrespect your wife. Treat your wife like a lady at all times. Love her, respect her and honor her. Be the man you want your son to be and the gentleman you want your daughter to date. Treat women like you’d want men to treat your mother. Ladies, this is for you: There are many things expected of us as men and we work hard to provide. Though gratitude is vintage, we’re not looking for praise. Just don’t underestimate the value of a thank you or reciprocated gesture. Galatians 6:7 says “…A (wo)man reaps what (s)he sows.” So if you expect chivalry, then be chivalrous. Be the woman you want your daughter to be and the lady you want your son to date. You don’t have to agree. As long as the conversation is created and the people are talking, my job here is done. Pleasantries. – Enitan Bereola, II

Finance

By: Nicole Ronczyk

Your Money, My Money, OUR Money

The pastor asked, “Miss Frugal do you take Mr. Extravagant to have and to hold” and “Do you Mr. Saver take Miss Big-spender for richer or poorer”, and you both emphatically said yes. Now what? These vows were not limited to the chapel. In a marriage, there is no “my money” and “your money” or “my debts” and “your debts.” When you become married you are becoming one flesh, one family, and one budget. Unwillingness to join assets and bank accounts after marriage is perhaps a danger signal that unresolved trust issues could still be lingering or developing in the relationship. The first year of marriage will be a learning experience for all on every front. By all means use wisdom and have important conversations such as finance prior to the official union. Husband and wife may not agree on basic money management principles so it can certainly pose as an issue. A great way to alleviate a good deal of stress is to make budgeting decisions together, hold each other accountable for meeting their financial goals, and devise timeline for a regular ‘financial check-up’ of sorts. This check up should review your collective decreasing debt and your retirement savings. As a couple it would behoove you to come to an agreement on the amount of money that can be spent without first checking with each other. The specific amount will depend on the budget category and the couple’s particular circumstances. Many couples have decided to keep another account for such expenditures, however be certain that this is not a “stash” account. Financial infedelity is a sure way to wreak havoc on your relationship. Creating a budget (and sticking to it) is a crucial component in becoming financially secure. When creating the budget please note that they are not devised to manipulate or control. Budgets are all about goal setting for your future! When creating a budget use wisdom and delegate the primary book-keeper. Even though one person primarily handles balancing the checkbook, both should be fully trained and able to do it. There is nothing wrong with the wife handling the finances in the family if she is the better administrator, but God still holds the husband accountable for the ultimate decisions. Both spouses should be involved in paying the monthly bills. Doing so will keep both fully aware of their financial status. “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) A bond of uncompromising devotion creates a healthy atmosphere for togetherness: praying, courting and even managing money. Just as it takes two to make a marriage successful, it takes two to establish a clear line of communication in financial planning. Share what is important to each of you. Whether you are saving for home ownership, retirement, or vacations. Budgeting can make these dreams a reality. Seek assistance from a financial planner if necessary. Your marriage is too precious and valuable to lose over money. 65

Destination...

By: Nicole Ronczyk This issue is our “Vintage” Issue so it was befitting to select Cannes, France for our Honeymoon destination! Located in the French Riviera, Cannes is considered to be one of the most captivating social hubs of Europe. When those in the glamour and/or entertainment industry hear the word vintage they think of old Hollywood glam. Cannes, a beautiful city best known for the Cannes Film Festival, is certainly a destination that exemplifies luxe and glamour. This quaint locale is renowned for the plethora of designer shops such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Dior, Chanel, and Gucci that line the world famous Promenade de la Croisette. It truly is a shopper’s paradise! From the Rolls-Royce dealership to the haute-couture boutiques; it is hard to fathom that this enchanted city was one a small fishing village! The Promenade de la Croisette extends along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, boasting with mobile cafes, yachts, restaurants and perhaps a celebrity or two on holiday or in town for the festival. Once you have had your fill of shopping and people watching, head on over to the Carlton Casino Club which is also located in the same area. The Carlton Casino Club, has been characterized by some patrons as having a “James Bond feel” as jackets are required for men to enter. Once you have had your fill of the glamorous life you can explore the rest of what Cannes has to offer. For decades Cannes has maintained a sense of exclusivity while still being suitable to all budgets. One beautiful attraction is the Jardin Alexandre III. It is a magnificent park overflowing with huge blossums at every turn. How romantic! For true nature lovers, be sure to visit the surrounding islands of Saint Margarite or Lerins where you will be able to trek through lush forest of Allepo Pine and eucalyptus! Be sure to visit the local shops there that specialize in organic products. They’ll make awesome ‘Thank you’ gifts or serve as a reminder upon use to take a deep breath every once and a while and remember your special trip alone with your sweetheart. As you take this time to celebrate your love, be sure to enjoy a glass of vintage produced at a monastery located in the heart of Lerins Island. Wine lovers will be pleased to know that a recent planting of Pinot Noir has produced a very aberrant vintage. Due to it’s limited production it is sold on reservations. As a visitor you’ll have an opportunity to sample it! Between the shopping, people watching, and enjoying the great outdoors, you’re sure to work up an appetite! Sumptious smells and tastes greet you at every turn. While we can not account for everyones unique pallate and tastes, we will say that if you travel to Rue Saint Antoine you’ll be satiated because there are over 30 restaurants to choose from. Decisions decesions!! Boasting with breathtaking views, delicious cuisine, and a nightlife that would give Las Vegas a run for it’s money. This magnificent city certainly lives up to it’s motto, “Life is a Festiyou packed yet? Magazine | Fall 2012 66val”! Are Shades Wedding
