2011–12 Men’s Season Preview Led by fourth-year head coach Bubba Smith, the 2011–12 rendition of the Tigers have it all. Coming off a year where Sewanee won the most games since the 2004–05 campaign, the Tigers return a solid nucleus of players to go along with a number of talented newcomers. Overall, eight letterwinners return, including the Tigers’ top scorer and rebounder. Guards: Sophomore point guard Valentino Bryant and junior shooting guard Lewis Affronti anchor the Tigers backcourt. Add in junior Brett Bouldin and senior Trent Williams and you can see the depth the Tigers possess out front. Bryant, an All-SCAC performer a year ago, excelled in his first year as a collegiate point guard. With exceptional speed, Bryant led the Tigers in scoring 11 times while ranking 20th among SCAC players in points per game. Affronti had a stellar sophomore season in 2010–11 — he led the team in three-point field goals made (45), and finished 11th in the league in threes made per contest. A complement to Bryant at the off guard position in 2010–11, Bouldin still saw action all 25 games. As a sophomore, Bouldin led the Tigers in free-throw percentage and three-point percentage, while scoring a career-high 19 points against Johnson University on November 30, 2010. Williams appeared in all 25 games in 2010–11. The senior captain set career marks in four offensive categories last season. A leader on and off the court, Williams’s stock continues to rise after improving in every stat a year ago. Rounding out the returners is sophomore Bryan Beviacqua. The 5'11" guard appeared in 19 games as a freshman. An accurate shooter from outside, Beviacqua should see significant minutes again after averaging 10.7 minutes per contest in 2010–11. Led by TSSAA First-Team Class A AllState selection Wes Grace, the Tigers have plenty of talent waiting in the wings after a trio of freshmen come to the Mountain. Along with Grace, freshman Marcus Caldwell, and Nathan Warren are expected to see action early this season. Sophomore Zach Abeles, a 6'4" guard

from Hagerstown, Md., who attended James Madison in 2010–11, has also been added to the Sewanee backcourt. Forwards: Senior Sam Martin and junior Tyler Brown hold down two of the inside-out positions for the Tigers. Martin, who is one of two seniors, appeared in all 25 games last season. The 6'3" forward set career marks in ppg and field-goal percentage in 2010–11. Always a strong defender, Martin finished last year ranked 11th in block shots among all SCAC players. Brown emerged as strong presence at the forward position. An athletic forward, Brown has the ability to score on the perimeter or finish on the rim. Last season, Brown set a career high in ppg while finishing second on the team in rebounding. Also contributing at the forward position is 6'6" freshman Robert Veal, and sophomore Eric Leibrandt. Veal comes to Sewanee from nearby Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tenn. After wrapping up his prep career as

Ravenwood’s all-time leading rebounder, Veal was rated among the top-60 senior players from the state, according to Rick Bolus High Potential Basketball Service. Sophomore walk-on Leibrandt joins the team after playing football for Sewanee this fall. A tough player, Leibrandt brings a strong physical authority in games and practices. Centers: Down low, the Tigers return their leading rebounder in Anvil Nelson, and sophomore Todd Kirkpatrick. Nelson, who started 23 games as freshman, led the Tigers with 5.3 rebounds per game in 2010–11. A tough matchup for opponents, Nelson can control the low block or step outside and shoot mid-range jump shots. An aggressive player on offense, Nelson led the Tigers in free throw attempts a year ago. Despite limited action as freshman, Kirkpatrick is expected to give depth to the Tigers. The 6'7" sophomore appeared in three games last season.

Bubba Smith enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Sewanee Tigers. In just a short period of time, the changes that Smith has put in place have become the new standard of excellence for Sewanee Basketball. From how the team is outfitted, facility improvements, to how the team travels, every aspect of the Tiger program is being improved. Although many of these changes are critical to player retention and recruitment, the most valuable change Smith has brought to the Mountain is the belief that Sewanee can compete with the best teams in the country. Even though the rebuilding process requires time and patience, Smith will not settle until the Tigers are consistently competing with the top teams in the SCAC and Division III. Recruitment of the highest caliber student-athletes with great character, talent, and undying work ethic is the key to the rebuilding process. Smith’s first season with Sewanee saw the Tigers make steady improvements throughout the year. The 2008– 2009 Tigers finished the season with a three-game home winning streak over Oglethorpe, Birmingham-Southern, and

Head Coach Bubba Smith rival Rhodes (Sewanee’s first win streak of three or more games and first SCAC weekend sweep since 2004–2005) and then taking #1 seeded Trinity University (ranked #6 nationally) to overtime in the first round of the SCAC tournament before losing on a heartbreaking buzzer-beater. Along with a strong finish to the season, Smith’s Tigers held their opponents to the lowest scoring average and the lowest rebounding rate since 2001–2002. Sewanee’s opposition shot the lowest percentage from the field since 2001 and the lowest from the three-point line since 1999–2000. The Tigers own three-point percentage was the highest since 2003– 2004, and the five home victories were the most since 2005–2006. During the 2008–2009 season, Smith also notched his 100th career collegiate victory with a 57-52 victory over Birmingham-Southern on Feb. 13, 2009. In 2010–11, the Tigers implemented a new Princeton style offense that contributed to nine wins, which were the most since the 2004–05 campaign. With the offensive changes, Sewanee’s output improved by five ppg, while holding their opponents to five less ppg. Sewanee also saw increases in field goal percentage,

A few words from Coach Smith: I am excited about the progress we are making in rebuilding the men’s basketball program. It is a great honor to be associated with such a prestigious university. From the moment our family stepped foot on the campus, we immediately felt like we were at home. There is no question that Sewanee is special, and I hope to build upon the success that has been a part of Sewanee’s past, as we look forward to growing the men’s basketball program. I’m passionate about attracting young men to Sewanee who have a commitment to excellence in their academic, athletic, social, and personal growth. I have been blessed over the last 11 years as an assistant and head coach to lead young men who have made me a better person and coach. The successes our players have had off the court have been equally as impressive as their accomplishments on, and I envision the same for our student-athletes at Sewanee. I am looking forward to building special traditions at Sewanee, connecting with former players and alumni, and making this journey a family affair.

He did an outstanding job of continuing the tradition of excellence here at Hampden-Sydney. three-point percentage, and free throw percentage. The Tigers had 155 less turnovers compared to the 2009–10 season, and finished with a positive assist to turnover ratio for the first time on record. The team also recorded the largest margin of victory over an SCAC opponent in school history with a 91–52 win over Southwestern University on Jan. 15, 2011. Smith came to Sewanee after spending eight years at perennial Division III power Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, the last five as the head coach. During his three years as an assistant, Smith helped current William and Mary Head Coach Tony Shaver lead the Tigers to 75 wins, two ODAC titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances, and an appearance in the 2003 NCAA Division III Final Four. As head coach at Hampden-Sydney, Smith continued the school’s tradition of excellence, leading the Tigers to a 94–46 (.671) record, including two ODAC championships and two berths in the NCAA Tournament. In Smith’s first season as a head coach, he became the only rookie coach to ever lead his team to a No. 1 national ranking, ODAC championship, and NCAA tournament appearance with a 25-5 record. Overall, Smith’s 94 wins are the most ever for a Hampden-Sydney basketball coach through his first five seasons.

Pierson enters his first year as an assistant men’s basketball coach for the Sewanee basketball team. Pierson is involved in all facets of the program, serving as the Tigers’ recruiting coordinator, assist with on-court teaching, coaching, player development, and game preparation. Pierson, a 2009 Sewanee graduate, returns to the Mountain after spending two years as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Berry College. The four-year letterwinner, Order of Grownsman, and 2008-09 captain, finished his Sewanee career in the school’s top-10 in three-point field percentage and threepoint field goals made. Pierson led the SCAC in three-point field goals made in 2007–2008, while ranking in the top-100 nationally in Division III. After earning his B.A. in economics from the University of the South, Pierson went on to earn a M.Ed. from Berry in secondary education. Pierson is a native of Rome, Ga.

Sewanee men’s basketball extends beyond just four years spent on the Mountain. The current Tigers wouldn’t be where they are without the support, foundation, and encouragement from former Tiger athletes. Sewanee men’s basketball alumni young and old alike, share a common bond with the current team and they all understand that wearing the Sewanee jersey is a special commitment. We invite and welcome men’s basketball alumni to stay connected with the team. Join us in the spring for our annual Alumni Game!

Community Service The men’s basketball team helped Housing Sewanee rebuild a local community center.

2010 Review

“Our team finds value in serving the local community; whether participating in Housing Sewanee, Sewanee Angel Tree, or working with students from Sewanee Elementary.”

Placing the needs of others first on the court is one of the primary foundations of team success for Sewanee men’s basketball. More importantly, it is a concept that the Tigers take seriously off the court as well. Whether it’s working with Housing Sewanee, putting on youth clinics, study abroad, or doing an internship, as a team we recognize our opportunity and responsibility to have a positive impact on our campus, our community, and the world.

We had a record turnout for the annual Purple and White game.

NCAA tournament appearances: 1975, 1976, 1997, 1998
