avid Poggi is going into his sixth season as Sewanee’s head soccer coach. Having improved since Coach Poggi took over, the Tigers will be looking for continued success in the 2012 season.

A year ago, Poggi led Sewanee to an 8-7-2 record in 2011. That mark was the best winning percentage since 2004. At the same time, Sewanee played in four overtime games, with seven of its losses coming by only one goal. The Tigers ended last year with 31-20 advantage in goals.

With head coaching experience that spans several decades, Coach Poggi came to Sewanee from Loyola University in New Orleans. He served as the head women’s coach there for two years. After the 2005 Season was cancelled because of Hurricane Katrina, Poggi evacuated and served as a trainer with longtime friend and club director Paul Riley (Albertson Soccer Club/Long Island, N.Y.). He served as a U-18 Fury and Academy age group coach. He returned to New Orleans to lead the Wolfpack for the 2006 season. From 2000-2005 Poggi built a Division I women’s program at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. During the 2004-2005 season he led the Ragin Cajuns to best overall record and conference finish in the programs fiveyear history. In addition, Poggi served as trainer for the regionally prominent Lafayette Burn and Rage Club Teams. He has served as a Region III (South) Boy’s ODP coach during this time as well. Prior to ULL, Poggi was the head men’s coach at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

From 1992-1996 his Fighting Phoenix were Mid-Con Conference Champions, received Top 20 National Ranking (#16) and had a 40-25-10 record. Coach Poggi began his NCAA coaching career at 4

Truman State University. From 1985-1992 Poggi’s Bulldogs were MIAA Conference Champions three times (’87, ’89, ’90), received Top 20 National Ranking (’87 #9, ’90 #14) and were NCAA Div II National Tournament participants (’90). He was named MIAA Coach of the Year twice (’86, ’87) and NCAA Midwest Regional Coach of the Year (’89). The Bulldogs had a 77-4313 record during these years. Poggi has served as a Region II (Midwest) Boy’s ODP coach during this time as well. In addition to his experience in the collegiate level, Coach Poggi also served as head coach and assistant coach professionally. In 2003, he served as an assistant coach with Sagitun during their BPFL Championship (Belize, Central America). From 1999-2000 he served as the head coach for the Utah Freezz in the World Indoor League. During his two seasons (’97, ’98) with the Lafayette SwampCats (EISL), his teams won backto-back championships. In 1996 Poggi served as assistant women’s coach at Brondby IF (Copenhagen, Denmark). Coach Poggi received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Oregon (’82, ’85) and holds an “A” License from the United States Soccer Federation and a National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. He is married to the former Michelle Fontham, who is a native of New Orleans, and a graduate of the University of Virginia. He has five children; Brook (31), Adrian (28), Michael (8), Dixon, (5), and Emma (3). The Poggis live in Sewanee.

Camilo Valencia Assistant Coach

A

fter an extensive search, Sewanee Men’s Soccer Head Coach David Poggi has named Camilo Valencia as the new assistant men’s soccer coach for the Tigers. “We had a very strong group of applicants and Camilo’s background as a player and coach is a perfect fit for our program,” commented Poggi. Valencia comes to Sewanee after serving as the Technical Director at the Fundacion Sport Legends in Cali, Colombia. There, Valencia started the Fundacion with several friends who played collegiate soccer in the United States. “The goal of Sport Legends is to provide Colombian student-athletes with an avenue to continue to play competitive sports while attending a university in the U.S.,” said Valencia. “Prior to this, Colombian student-athletes did not have this opportunity available.” At Legends, Valencia managed tryouts for the boys U-15–U-20 team while supervising technique and skills practices. Additionally, Valencia worked with parents and players to achieve personal academic goals for tests like the SAT and TOEFL.

Additionally, Valencia served as an assistant coach for the Colorado Storm in Denver, Colo. There, Valencia worked with U-15–U-17 players while he trained college student-athletes during the summer. In 2008, Valencia served as a camp director for the Des Moines Menance Soccer Camps in Des Moines, Iowa. Additionally, he earned coaching experience at UNLV and the University of Colorado–Boulder Soccer Camps. “I am honored and excited to be joining the Sewanee’s men’s soccer coaching staff,” said Valencia. “Being part of the Sewanee family provides me the opportunity to coach student-athletes that are very successful academically. I am grateful to Coach Poggi, Athletic Director Mark Webb, and the entire athletic department for this opportunity.” A 2011 graduate of the UNLV in business and marketing, Valencia played professionally in the Colombian first division as a center midfielder for Cortulua and Boyaca Chico. Additionally, he played for the U-20 Colombian National Team in 2003. A native of Washington, D.C., Valencia’s parents Claudia Andrade and Camilo Valencia live in Cali, Colombia. He also has two brothers: Alejandro, who attends the University of Maryland, and Sebastian.

Prior to his time at Legends, Valencia played soccer as a student-athlete at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV). In addition, Valencia was a captain for two seasons at Yavapi Community College were the Roughriders won the 2007 National Championship.

Two-year letterwinner at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tenn. Team finished runner-up at the Tennessee State High School Tournament in 2008. Helped lead team victory in the 2009 Division II TSSAA Championship. 2009 First-Team All-State, Division II West Region All-Tournament Team, and Shelby County All-Metro Team member. Played club soccer for West Tennessee Futbol Club. Co-captained the team in 2009. Played for the ’91 Tennessee Rush team that was a state division I semifinalist in 2005. The Rush won the MSSF Fall League Champions in 2005 & 2006. Member of the Premier League in 2005 & 2006. Honorable Mention National Spanish Exam. • Played under coach Rick Adolph at Ooltewah High School (Tenn.). • Munoz, who plays attacker, comes to the Mountain as a player who does well anywhere in the front line or midfield. • The Owls, who currently are ranked second in the state, own a 14-1 overall record and an undefeated mark in district play. • As of late, Munoz has contributed to the Owl’s success. In 15 games, he has 15 goals and 13 assists. • Additionally, as a junior, the Owls won the 2011 district championships, while OHS finished as the region runner-up and made it to the TSSAA Class III Sub-State Finals. • Munoz was individually rewarded with all-district, all-region, and the district offensive player of the year awards. • Munoz’s club team, the East Ridge Express coached by Andy Wishart, (father of Sewanee soccer Class of 2016 enrollee Callum Wishart) has also been successful. • In 2008, the Express were the Tennessee State Champions and participated in Region 3 President’s Cup.

• Benjamin comes to the Mountain, after playing for coach Aris Kyriakides at Metairie. • There, Benjamin finished his career as the Most Outstanding Player in the Louisiana State High School Championship match. • Also, Benjamin scored the game-winning goal from his centerback position to lift the Cajuns to the title. Additionally, he was voted to the Louisiana Prep XI Team, as one of the Top-11 players in the state. • A Louisiana First-Team All-State selection, Benjamin was the district player of the year, and the Times Picayune All-Metro New Orleans Team selection as a senior. • Prior to that, Benjamin was named to the All-Metro Team, a Second-Team All-State selection and an all-district player as a junior. • His sophomore season, Benjamin was named the district defensive most valuable player and before that, he was an alldistrict selection as a freshman. • Outside of his outstanding prep career, Benjamin played club soccer with the Chicago Fire Juniors team under Coach Geo. • His teams were consistently in the Louisiana State Playoffs, finishing as high as fourth in 2011.

• Wishart was a four-year letter winner Ooltewah High School, just outside Chattanooga, Tenn. • Originally from Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, Wishart is a versatile center midfielder, who is strong on both sides of the pitch. A big, strong player, who has the ability to break up an opponent’s attack with timely challenges, Wishart also has the ability to start the offense with good passing. • Playing as an attacking center midfielder, Wishart is good in possession and bringing his teammates into the play. Additionally, as a defensive center midfielder, his tough tackling and aerial ability helps keep pressure off the backline. • Finally, Wishart served as the team captain for the Owls in 2012 and played club soccer for the East Ridge Express.

• As a prep, Baker played under Adrian Pinasco at The Hammond School (S.C.) for four seasons. While there, he helped lead the Skyhawks to the SCISCA State Tournament Semifinals three times. • Playing in the backline, Baker was named defensive player of the year his junior season while being named to the SCISCA All-State Team. • Also, Baker played for the South Carolina United FC Palmetto I club, coached by Will Eudy. Again playing as a defender, he helped lead the team to a fourth-place finish in the state tournament. As a side note, Baker was a four-time SCISCA Individual State Champion in Wrestling (2009-2012).

• Gideon joins the Tigers after lettering for three years under Coach Brian Hensyel at Washburn Rural High School. • Playing mostly as a midfielder, Gideon helped the Junior Blues to the 2009 & 2010 Kansas State High School 6A (highest classification in Kansas) Regional Championship and the 2009 6A State Tournament. • In his senior year, Gideon led the team to third place finish in 6A and was chosen to the 6A All-Region Second-Team. • Additionally, Gideon played club soccer for the Kansas Rush West Club, one of the biggest clubs nationally. • Playing primarily as a midfielder on that team, he competed in some of the top tournaments throughout the U.S.

ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM

THIS IS SEWANEE

The athletic training room staff at Sewanee housed in the Fowler Sport & Fitness Center consists of three certified athletic trainers who use a 2,000-square-foot treatment and rehabilitation center to service the nearly 400 student-athletes in 20 varsity sports. The head athletic trainer is Ray Knight who is in his eleventh year in this position at Sewanee after serving as an assistant athletic trainer here on the Mountain in 2000-01. Knight is assisted by Danielle Green and Meagan Bevins.

School of Theology: Officially opened as an Episcopal Church Seminary in 1878, The School of Theology is one of 10 accredited Episcopal seminaries in the United States. Current enrollment is 70 full-time graduate students who are pursuing master’s degrees and more than 50 students enrolled in doctoral and advanced degrees during the summer session. Sewanee serves nearly 10,000 students a year (lay and ordained) through its Programs Center, which offers Education for Ministry (EfM) and continuing education programs.
