Our graduates include 26 Rhodes Scholars,

42 Watson Fellows, 27 NCAA Postgraduate Scholars and numerous doctors, business people, government leaders, professors, artists, and teachers. We’re not shy to say that our campus is one of the most beautiful places you’ve ever seen. Its 13,000 forested acres are crisscrossed by 65 miles of trails, streams, waterfalls, and great views to discover and enjoy. While the Sewanee community provides a myriad of educational and recreational opportunities due to its elegant natural surroundings, the University is more than just another pretty campus. It’s a natural treasure right at our doorstep where learning and real world solutions intersect. The hallmark of a Sewanee education is challenging academics paired with close faculty-student relationships. One hundred percent of Sewanee classes are taught by professors — a faculty which includes Guggenheim and Fulbright Fellows and Rhodes Scholars — and 100 percent of Sewanee faculty members also serve as student advisors. At Sewanee, learning is exploration. Students are encouraged to think for themselves, with interested professors who are experts in their fields as their guides. Sewanee is the Mountain, and the Mountain is us — a place for adventures of the mind, body, and spirit. The cornerstone of everything we do is the Honor Code — our pledge to lead a life of integrity and truthfulness. All incoming students sign their names to the code and all students sign their name and write “pledged’’ on all classroom work. Sewanee is a nationally-recognized liberal arts college. According to the National Survey of Student Engagement, Sewanee is one of the nation’s top performing colleges in terms of student engagement. Students who spend four years on the Mountain find it a place to challenge ideas, build lasting relationships, and feel safe and welcomed into a caring community.

6  Women’s Basketball 2012–13

Season Outlook 2012–13 With just one senior and two juniors on the roster, the 2012-13 Sewanee women’s basketball team looks to the future to build on last season’s first 10-win season since 2006-07. The three returning upperclassmen bring a lot of experience to the team, but the five sophomores and three freshmen on the roster will be expected to take on major roles immediately. The Tigers are looking to improve on their best overall record in six years. The 2011-12 season saw Sewanee set a new NCAA Division III record for field goals made in a single game. On November 19, 2011 the team made 24 three-point field goals in a 125-58 win over Judson College, eclipsing the previous record by two three-point goals. The 125-point outburst also set a new school record for points scored in a game. The Tigers must find a way to replace the contributions of five seniors lost to graduation. Claire Elliott, Alex Ginsburg, Dani Kabbes, Logan Miller, and Virginia Zakas were mainstays during their four-year basketball careers at Sewanee. Team captain Dee Bradford, the Tigers’ lone senior, returns at a guard position. Coach Dickie McCarthy and the Tigers will look to Bradford’s leadership and work ethic to lead the 2012-13 team. A relentless defender, Bradford gives her all on the court on every possession. Her steady play will be essential to the success of the team. Clarissa Medley and Paige Lowe return as the team’s only two juniors. Medley, one of the most versatile player on the team, can play both inside and outside for the Tigers. An excellent position rebounder, Medley will step out to play on the perimeter in the Tigers’ Princeton-style offense. Lowe, a deadly three-point shooter, will be looked to pick up some of the scoring load. Blessed with great court presence and basketball intelligence, Lowe is poised to have her best season yet. Sophomore Kayla Sewell returns as Sewanee’s most experienced player. Sewell, a three-sport athlete at Sewanee, started every game last season for the Tigers averaging nearly 27 minutes per game. Statistically, Sewell led the SCAC in blocks (2.9), was second in field goal percentage (.545), fifth in rebounding (9.7), and tenth in steals (2.9). A dominating defensive presence, Sewell was named honorable mention All-SCAC as a freshman. Sophomore guards McKenzie Jones, Jamie Samociuk and Emily Culbertson will be expected to step forward and provide much needed depth in the backcourt in Sewanee’s four-guard offense. The Tigers suffered a tremendous loss early in the school year when sophomore Michelle Howell tore her ACL during preseason workouts and was lost for the season. Howell is expected to fully recover from the injury and return to the court next season. Newcomers Jamie Chauvin, Haley McDonough, and Sydney Jackson will be forced to provide critical minutes on the court very early in the 2012-13 season. The Tigers open the season on November 15 when they entertain Welch College from Nashville. Sewanee will host rival Centre College on Saturday, Dec. 1 to begin their inaugural Southern Athletic Association season. The newly-formed SAA is composed of familiar conference foes Rhodes College, Centre College, Millsaps College, Birmingham-Southern College, Oglethorpe University, Hendrix College, and newcomer Berry College. Games against Emory University, Agnes Scott College, and Covenant College highlight the team’s non-conference schedule.

Considering Basketball at Sewanee? At Sewanee, basketball is more than a game ... it’s an experience!

Social Life The picturesque Sewanee campus of 13,000 acres at an altitude of nearly 2,000 feet on the Cumberland Plateau experiences the radiant beauty of every season. Complemented by this inspiring backdrop, Sewanee students can avail themselves of a wide spectrum of social and cultural activities. Student choices include intramurals and varsity sports, fraternities and sororities, the Sewanee Outing Program, Chaplaincy Outreach Program, Habitat for Humanity, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Volunteer Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Service. Live music venues, performing arts events, and student-run production companies offer contemporary plays and musicals. The world is a little more real here, and the perspectives you can gain are limitless. Team Unity The team spends time each year on community service projects, participates in an annual free children’s basketball clinic, and gives organized support to other Sewanee athletic teams. Our players are involved in extracurricular activities on campus. Academics Sewanee student-athletes are here to earn a nationally-recognized and respected education. Team members are annually named to the conference academic team as the squad strives to earn a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Practice schedules are set to accommodate the player’s class schedules. Conference games are played predominantly on Fridays and Sundays, which limits missed class time and time away from campus.
