Improving together When meeting new people on business trips and industry events, I wonder how I could sum up the operation of Andament Group in the best possible way. Should I paint a picture in broad strokes about a group that provides Finns with essential parts of infrastructure such as electricity, clean water and safe roads? Or should I pick up individual flashes of the six companies in the group; their core expertise and successful projects? Gradually, I have ended up with the conclusion that Andament Group’s story must be told using both approaches. Today, we are a group of companies for special construction operations employing 300 experts. We offer a wide array of services that cross boundaries between individual companies to ensure that individual customer needs are met. Nevertheless, the background lies in the ground work by the subsidiaries and affiliates which have tirelessly developed their services, recruited new talent and expanded their footprints by securing local projects one by one. In this context, we cannot forget Pentti Juola, the son of a farmer family from Kalajoki, who decided to expand his business from farming to earth construction during the 1960s. Pentti’s descendants own Andament Group today.

Pentti Juola’s core values, such as a desire for continuous A desire for improvement and ambition to high quality, are guiding improvement and Andament Group’s operthe high quality of ations even today. Andament Group’s history dates back to the 1960s, when Pentti Juola from Kalajoki decided to expand his business from traditional farming to earth construction. Soon he achieved a reputation as a skilled bulldozer and road scraper driver. During the 1970s and 1980s, the family business flourished, and the five children of Pentti and his wife Elsa also found their roles in the family business. Alongside the earth construction business, the family continued to run their pig farm. At the beginning of 1990s, the Juola family saw growth potential in road milling. Andament Oy was founded for road construction in 1993, amidst the worst years of

6

the Finnish recession. Pentti, Matti and Jukka showed special interest towards machinery, which led to many innovations, such as the self-made Cutter road milling machine, securing many projects for Andament. Later in the decade the company experienced moderate growth and ventured into other lines of business such as excavation and road maintenance. During the first decade of the 2000s, when the company has been able to handle larger projects, the operations have been expanded through acquisitions and by founding specialised subsidiaries in order to achieve synergy benefits. Andament Group was founded in 2011 to clarify the structures of ownership.

The Pajukoski windpark in Ylivieska is a model example of the operations of the Andament Group companies at common sites.

The more challenging the construction sites are, the better the diversified special know-how of Maastorakentajat can be utilised. Many of the company’s most important construction sites have been located by a water system, amidst heavy traffic or in challenging ground conditions. The most important reference sites of Maastorakentajat include water supply plants with 18 installations across Finland. Growth potential can be seen in building of the windpark infrastructure, where the know-how of concrete construction and close co-operation with other Andament Group companies can be fully utilised. Maastorakentajat is aware of its responsibility for the

environment, of the building quality and of the personnel’s work safety. The company also requires the same level of responsibility from its partners.

A strong constructor in Mid-Finland The present Suomen Maastorakentajat Oy was founded in August 2014, through fusion with Andament Oy. Both companies had over 20 years of experience in challenging civil engineering: Maastorakentajat operated mainly in Central and Eastern Finland, while Andament held a strong position on the West coast. After the fusion, Maastorakentajat was able to seek more challenging construction projects across Finland.

Founded in 2001, SL Asfaltti’s range of services covers both new pavements and various recycled materials and repair methods. The most important clients include municipalities, cities and ELY Centres with 1–3 large pavement contracts each year. In Kuopio and the North Savo economic areas, SL Asfaltti also serves private customers in the asphalting of yards and driveways. SL Asfaltti’s competitive advantages include a lean organisation and motivated personnel, combining experienced asphalt workers with newly graduated beginners. The company invests heavily in the safety of the asphalt working site, in terms of both the personnel and road users.

Continuous improvement As the leading Finnish operator in the pavement sector, SL Asfaltti is committed to sustainable development. Many of the machines used in the manufacture and spreading of the recycled pavements are based on the company’s own R&D.The more efficiently the old pavement can be used at the site, the more significant are the savings in raw material and transport costs for the customer. SL Asfaltti has invested a great deal of effort to ensure a high level of quality and to minimise the environmental load. NEVIGATOR The Nevigator application is used by maintenance companies, authorities and other companies and communities working in the field. Using Nevigator, any observations related to, for example, road surface friction, pavement damages and damaged lighting and safety devices can be quickly transmitted to the entire organisation. Nevigator is made of a mobile application and a browser-based user interface.

User interface of the Nevigator software.

Nevia was founded in 2008 to take care of Andament’s intelligent traffic services and measurements. The company has several years of experience of the delivery of road infrastructure services to Finnish Transport Agency, ELY Centres, cities and private customers. Its core competence includes quality control measurements of asphalt pavement, performed with mobile equipment for thousands of kilometres each year. Information on groove depths and road surface inclinations help the road keeper to prioritise the repair projects. The measurement business seeks growth through the improvement of own processes and expansion of the market area. Nevia can also measure the amount of traffic in dif-

ferent portions of road and pinpoint routes where hazardous goods are transported. The company experts use the measurement data to compile illustrative reports to support the traffic designers’ work.

Growth through software development In recent years, Nevia has invested heavily in service development and has recruited many software and electronics experts, for example. Other applications will be released alongside the flagship product Nevigator, via which the company can utilise its two strengths: agile software development and solid measurement skills. In intelligent traffic services, the company seeks new interesting pilot projects.

We have reached a level where we can secure countrywide contracts from the largest actors in the field. Sami Mustonen, CEO and founder

WeldOne Oy was founded in 2010 to develop new equipment for the needs of the Andament Group. Since then, the company has grown into a supplier of challenging steel structures, operating across Finland, from Vuosaari Harbour to Ivalo airport. After achieving the current size of about 30 employees, WeldOne seeks additional growth via expanding its own subcontractor network. WeldOne’s strengths include designers who love to solve problems, production personnel who recognise the importance of high quality and a large contact surface to hands-on operations in several lines of business. Despite its rapid growth, the company has not lost its straightforwardness and ability to adapt quickly to new projects.

Guaranteed quality WeldOne is certified according to EN 1090 for the manufacture of load-bearing steel structures and approved by the Finnish Transport Agency for the delivery of small bridges. The company has implemented systems for quality control, environmental protection and occupational safety, according to SFS-EN ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001. WeldOne’s customers include, for example, the Finnish Defence Forces, the Finnish Border Guard and SSAB’s steel mill. Successful co-operation within Andament Group includes operations especially in challenging water supply plant and power plant sites of Suomen Maastorakentajat.

Andament Group began it’s expansion in Sweden in spring 2015. At first Skarta AB is seeking mining and power plant industry contracts in the Kiruna area. Several large investments in industry, road system and municipal infrastructure are expected in Northern Sweden over the coming years, so Andament Group wants the local organisation to be ready when these contracts are released. After gaining a regional foothold Skarta’s purpose is to expand to other parts of Sweden. Skarta’s key personnel are long-term construction experts who provide strong regional networks and extensive experience in operations in the challenging conditions of the north.

New special know-how in the Group Skarta brings more special know-how to the Andament Group on, for example, slip casting and the relocation of buildings. There is a high demand for the relocation of buildings in Kiiruna for many future generations, since the entire city must be relocated as the mining of iron ore proceeds under the city centre. The project covers a huge amount of demolition work, disassembly, transportation and assembly of buildings, earth construction and pavement work. According to some evaluations, the relocation of the entire city may take as long as 100 years.

PAJUKOSKI WIND FARM Maastorakentajat delivered infrastructure to the Pajukoski wind farm in Ylivieska. The contract included diversified planning and implementation for earth construction, foundation work and electrical networks. The massive foundations of the nine wind power plants were implemented as ground-supported versions and 31.7 km of earth cabling was installed into this area. 2.8 km of a new road system was built and 4.9 km of the old system was renovated. The Andament Group companies Morenia and WeldOne also took part in the construction.

For example, the high number of projects reflects Maastorakentajat’s experience: during the past ten years, the company has built or renovated 18 water supply plants, 19 bridges and 24 power plants. Morenia has already delivered about 100 million tonnes of aggregates to its customers from its countrywide aggregate network. SL Asfaltti implements 1-3 large pavement projects for ELY Centres each year. All companies are capable of competing for large countrywide contracts and they have established subcon-
