Focus Takes Aim At Top SD Issues

South Dakota Focus, SDPB Television’s signature public affairs program, has been keeping South Dakotans up to date on the Stephanie issues for 19 years. Rissler The show, which airs two to four times each month, opens a world of experts to South Dakotans and gives citizens access to politicians, business leaders, medical authorities, advocates and more. It concentrates on the topics that are on South Dakotans’ minds. In February, Focus will air three times on SDPB1 and SDPB Online, on Feb. 13, 20 and 27 at 8pm (7 MT). The topics for the month will include a conversation with some of South Dakota’s former governors. Previous programs can be accessed on demand at SDPB.org/SDFocus. SDPB Connects You to Lawmakers

SDPB Radio, Television and Online are your connection to the South Dakota Legislature. Over the course of nine weeks, eight SDPB Radio news producers and five or more TV staff, plus online experts, are collaborating to present the state’s most comprehensive coverage of the 89th Legislative session. We’ll have staff on the ground in Pierre throughout; get reports on regional concerns from West River, Statehouse Producer Stephanie Rissler and SDPB Radio News Director Cara Sioux Falls and Aberdeen Hetland report from Pierre during Statehouse 2014. and the northeast; talk to key legislators; and listen to committee hearings to keep you up to date. The session ends March 14 and SDPB will be back on SDPB1: Fridays, 9pm (8 MT) March 31 when legislators will consider any & Sundays, 2pm (1 MT) gubernatorial vetoes. SDPB1 Television On Fridays, SDPB1 will offer a one-hour program to wrap each week of the session at 9pm (8 MT). Statehouse will look at top decisions, issues and activities. In The Address, filmmaker Ken Burns tells the story of a tiny school in Putney, Vermont, the Greenwood School, where each year the students are encouraged to memorize, practice and recite the Gettysburg Address. The Address will air on April 15.

The Gettysburg Address delivered by President Abraham Lincoln Nov. 19, 1863. “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate – we cannot consecrate – we cannot hallow – this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain – that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Funding for THE ADDRESS is provided by Bank of America; the Anne Ray Charitable Trust; Public Broadcasting Service; and members of The Better Angels Society, including The Pfeil Foundation and Robert & Beverly Grappone. Volunteers at the Pheasant Canteen

Program Celebrates WW II Pheasant Canteen in Aberdeen During World War II, up to 1,500 servicemen a day, aboard troop trains, stopped in Aberdeen. There they were met by volunteers who served a variety of foods and one unique item – pheasant sandwiches. Aberdeen Pheasant Canteen A Living Legacy tells the story of the volunteers from throughout the community – from farmers

to hunters to cooks to servers – who made sure the stop in Aberdeen was a bright spot for the men who were heading for war. The half-hour program airs on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 8:30pm (7:30 MT). The Canteen began some 70 years ago on Aug. 19, 1943, and operated until March 1946.

We’ll travel deep underground where cleaning has a whole new meaning in February’s Dakota Life. SDPB celebrates Black History Month with programs throughout February on SDPB1 and SDPB2. One of the highlights is a new American Masters about a famed author and activist – Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth. Most famous for her novel “The Color Purple,” writer/ activist Walker celebrates her 70th birthday this year. Born Feb. 9, 1944, into a family of sharecroppers in rural Georgia, she came of age during the violent racism and social changes of 20th-century America. Her mother, poverty and participation in the Civil Rights Movement influenced her life and became the themes in her writing. The first African-American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for Literature, Walker continues to shine a light on global human rights issues. Her dramatic life is told with poetry and lyricism, and includes interviews with Steven Spielberg, Danny Glover, Quincy Jones, Howard Zinn, Gloria Steinem and Walker herself. Follow nature photographer Michael Forsberg as he examines the remaining “wildness” of places like Nebraska and South Dakota in Great Plains America’s Lingering Wild. NET Television’s stunning two-part program, based on Forsberg’s book of the same name, airs on Sundays, Feb. 9 & 16, at 3pm (2 MT). Less than 200 years ago, the Great Plains was one of the greatest grassland ecosystems on Earth, stretching nearly a million square miles down the heart of the continent. Huge numbers of bison, elk, pronghorn, deer, prairie dogs, prairie wolves and even grizzlies were common. There were massive migrations of birds and fish. But as America grew, and the land was settled and tamed, the wildness began disappearing. But landscapes remain in this fragile ecosystem.

Grant Focuses on Gettysburg Address We’re collecting recitations of The Gettysburg Address across South Dakota, with the help of a grant from WETA, the public television station based in Washington, D.C. SDPB will work with people across South Dakota, especially schools and classrooms, to collect video of people reciting President Abraham Lincoln’s most famous speech. We’ll offer a DVD and a book to the first 25 classrooms to enter and feature some of the top entries on SDPB Television. Even better, your entries will be posted to the national website at PBS.org/TheAddress. A national program, produced by famed filmmaker Ken Burns, will air on PBS stations in April. Funding for THE ADDRESS is provided

by Bank of America; the Anne Ray Charitable Trust; Public Broadcasting Service; and members of The Better Angels Society, including The Pfeil Foundation and Robert & Beverly Grappone. SPDB Magazine will have a new look next month. The magazine will move up to standard magazine size and include color photographs, more stories and program listings that are easier to read. The new design has been in the works for about 10 months. We have been listening to our readers, as well as working with our budget and the Friends of SDPB Board to make this new publication a winner.
