EDITORIAL

November marks the 60th Anniversary of the JFK Assassination, Native American Heritage Month, and Veterans Day, to highlight a few program topics. We hope you take advantage of this programming. Our most up-to date television listings are online at SDPB.org/schedule. Lastly, South Dakota Day of Giving is back with #GivingTuesday, November 28th. For 24 hours, nonprofit organizations across the state unite to celebrate generosity, from before sunrise until well after the sun goes down by asking their community of supporters to, together, raise as much money as humanly possible. Learn more about this all-hands-on-deck event at southdakotagives.org. We are thankful for the interactions and wellwishes we receive from you every day. The staff and management of SDPB and Friends of SDPB are grateful for your continued support of our mission. Sincerely,

THREE GENERATIONS

OF WINNER

COACHES Winner, SD saw three state championships in the 80's (1981, 1987, and 1989) thanks to Harvey Naasz. In 1986, the Winner Warriors had a runner-up finish, and in 1980, 1981, and 1987 they reveled in unbeaten seasons. For 17 years, Harvey coached his heart out for the Warriors, and in 2017, he was inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame. Even as a child, Harvey knew coaching would impact his life. "When I was in the seventh grade," says Harvey, "we had a teacher who had us all go around and tell us what we wanted to do when we got older. I said, 'I'm going to be a football coach like my brother Howard,' because that's what he was going to college for." Harvey, now 84, shares that the best part about coaching is the team and their ability to keep him youthful.

"Being around the young men and women athletes keeps you young. Even though I'm no longer coaching today, I still like to associate with those people because they keep you young. We may not win it all, but we will be in every ball game. When the game's over, you'll know you were in the ball game. We always would tell them, 'Work hard. That scoreboard will take care of itself.'" Along with the team, the pride and passion of the fans rings throughout the town. "After we won the first championship, the athletes told me they'd go into stores, and people would cheer for them. People they didn't know would say, 'Oh, your football team brought the town together.' All of a sudden, people who never were fans were fans. It's a good feeling you always want. Especially up there on the hill, there's a lot of fan passion up there. We will play in Sisseton, and there'll be people there who don't have a son playing. They don't know anybody playing but will go to Sisseton or wherever to cheer the Warriors." The Naasz' history with Winner football doesn't end there. Both Harvey's son, Brian, and grandson, Nathan, followed in his footsteps of coaching football for the Warriors. Brian coached the team from 1993-2001. "I always thought about it [coaching]. I got a business degree and worked in the business field for a while, then figured out what I really wanted to do and went back to school to be an educator. I think I always knew, but sometimes you want to try something else at first." Nathan Naasz, Brian's son and Harvey's grandson, graduated from high school in 2012 and is currently the offensive coordinator for Winner. "Getting to have Dad and Grandpa as middle school coaches was pretty cool," says Nathan. "My wife and I both grew up in Winner, graduated here, and we always knew that eventually we were going to come back. It was never a matter of if; it was always a matter of when. When we first decided to move down here, I was still waiting on an interview for a teaching job, and I had the thought of, 'Okay, I can be the third one.' The dream growing up was always to get to coach the Winner Warriors. So, it's like living a dream right now of getting to be that thirdgeneration coach."

“IT'S COOL THAT NO MATTER WHERE I'VE BEEN IN SOUTH DAKOTA, PEOPLE KNOW WINNER FOOTBALL, WHETHER THEY'RE FOOTBALL FANS OR NOT.”

- OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, NATHAN NAASZ

From 1972-1990, Harvey set the scene for generations of football, and his time with the Warriors isn't done. To this day and for the past 30 years, Harvey has been showing his pride for the Warriors by mowing the field. "The janitors won't like this, but nobody else can do it right," Harvey jokes. "I just enjoy it. I still have a key to the watering place. Depending on the weather and the moisture, I mow at least twice [a week]. Sometimes more, sometimes every other day. I'm an old farm boy, and it's fun. People know that they probably shouldn't come on the field." His son Brian further expresses his dedication to the field and the team. "It's still his field. He'll get after Coach Gardner about the watering schedule. During game week a couple of weeks ago, he mowed it three times in one week. It had to be right for the first game of the year. Over the last few years, my brothers have said, 'Maybe Dad doesn't need to mow the football field anymore. Somebody else can do it.' I said, 'No, he's going to keep mowing until he doesn't want to. If he would take his last breath on this field, what could be better than that?'" While Harvey's dedication to the turf is inspiring, his impact on the team and the town goes beyond maintaining the field. "He still likes to be around the athletes," praises Brian. "He still will make a point to come to the school. He likes to be around the kids. Even though he is not coaching, he's still a figurehead that the kids in the high school know, and they'll look out for him. That's the thing that I'm really proud of, is to see how he still connects with the kids." SDPB is proud to present the SDHSAA Football Championships Nov. 9-11. Our coverage includes not only the games, but stories about the people and places associated with the state's best student-athletes.

NATIONAL PROGRA Independent Lens Three Chaplains Muslim chaplains in the U.S. military support and defend the religious rights of all service members. Native America Women Rule Building on the success of the first season, this four-part Native-directed series reveals the beauty and power of today’s indigenous world. Smashing stereotypes, it follows the brilliant engineers, bold politicians, and cutting-edge artists who draw upon Native tradition to build a better 21st century. Each hour reveals a core tenet of native heritage: the power of indigenous design, how language and artistry fuel the soul, the diverse ways that native women lead, and the resilience of the warrior spirit. Brought to life with dynamic stories of the here and now, these thematic episodes launch an active dialogue between past and present. Native women are leading, innovating, and inspiring in the arts, politics, and protecting the planet. Native America explores the diverse ways they carry forward deep traditions to better their communities, their lands, and the world. A Town Called Victoria Leaders of Victoria’s Muslim community—Abe Ajrami, Omar Rachid, and the founder of the mosque, Dr. Shahid Hashmi— watch in horror as their spiritual and communal home is destroyed. The next day, a press conference is held by the smoldering rubble. To their surprise, over 500 of their fellow Victorians arrive to stage an impromptu peace rally. But when the cameras turn away and the tidy narrative slips from the headlines, this South Texas community steeped in uneasy history starts to face difficult questions about its own identity. Behind the inspirational news stories is a deeply divided town facing real challenges. Victoria must overcome its age-old political, racial, and economic divides, and begin the hard work of changing itself for the better. LEGACY FINANCIAL PARTNERS JON POCHOP & TIFFANY EVEN

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT As a member of SDPB, you know the value of charitable giving. Because of your donations, we can pursue our mission of bringing informational programming and materials to the state. However, we want our members to be cared for first and foremost. Financial advisors can be vital in creating balance in an individual's funds between what they need and what they can comfortably give. Jon Pochop and Tiffany Even are financial advisors for Legacy Financial Partners, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services. Jon and Tiffany shared some advice and encouragement for the next steps that may be helpful to those who are planning the future of their funds. Can you share some ways that you can give charitably? Many people have IRA accounts," says Jon, "and can use a QCD (qualified charitable distribution) to donate to charities. When they do that, they give funds directly from their IRA to the charity. Other ways of giving would be with a CRUT - a Charitable Remainder Unitrust. For example, let's say a young couple moves to Florida in the 80s, stays there for 30 years, and then decides to move. The home they purchased for 200,000 is now worth about 3 million.

They can gift that home to a charitable remainder trust, receive a deduction, and then receive an income from that trust the remainder of their life." Tiffany continues with ways to give charitably. "There are so many wonderful ways, and each way is dependent upon a person's situation. Having a personal financial advisor that can help is a great thing for a person. One way a person can give is simply to withdraw from their checking account. Another thing that they can do is to leave the charity in their will, or they can also put a beneficiary designation on their IRA or non-IRA accounts so that when they pass, it will go to a charity. Some foundations can be set up, or you can contribute to community foundations as well. But again, each way is unique and serves its own purpose. Each person may have a particular reason why they pick one of those over another." What are some ways you recommend to clients to give to nonprofits from their IRAs and stock accounts? "An IRA can hold stock," shares Tiffany, "but the thing that's unique about an IRA is that when you put money into an IRA pretax, you have to pay taxes

on it when it comes out. The wonderful thing about a charity is once you turn 70.5 years old, you can give directly from your IRA to a charity as long as it's a qualified charity and you don't pay taxes on it. If you are looking at a non-IRA account with highly appreciated stocks, you can gift those stocks. Let's say you have 100 shares of stock with large gains; you can gift those hundred shares directly to the charity so you don't have to sell them and claim the gains as income." What is the current policy for donors who are 72 or 73 for their RMD? “RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) is a very large part of our practice," says Jon, "we have many clients over 73 years old. At 73, they're required by the IRS to pull funds from their IRA account. That's a taxable event to them, called the required minimum distribution. The purpose is that the IRS requires those funds to be distributed eventually, either by the individual owner or when their children receive it. They have a certain amount of time that they will need to redeem those funds from that IRA account, which becomes either an inherited IRA or a beneficial IRA." What is your personal Legacy's philanthropy on giving? Tiffany starts by stating, "When a person meets with a financial advisor, oftentimes they think that they're only going to be talking to them about what kind of investments to buy, and there's just so much more that a financial advisor can help with. One of those areas, in particular, is financial

planning, which helps you to plan for today as well as tomorrow. Frequently, a person wants to give a certain amount, but they don't know if they can and still be able to have enough to provide for themselves. One of the things that a financial advisor can do is to help them put together a financial plan that helps to pinpoint how much is a good amount for them to give and in what way it's best for them to give. Sometimes, even for myself, it's hard to see because we're too emotionally attached to whatever it is. Going to a professional advisor allows people to come at it with a different lens, so to speak, and allows people to donate in ways they didn't realize that they could. At Legacy, we help clients identify their top five values and combine those values with their goals." "One of our biggest compliments," Jon continues, "is when our clients refer us to individuals like themselves who have not been working with a financial advisor. We're trained to find the avenues of approach that best suit individuals with the funds. If individuals or couples feel that they have the funds, visiting with a financial advisor gives them direction on what makes the most sense. Many people are giving funds to nonprofits, and that's wonderful. But there are so many benefits of working with an advisor to get advice and to give direction that not only helps the nonprofit but benefits themselves based on the IRS rules. If a couple or an individual knows that they have the funds available to give to nonprofits or to charities, we ask that they go visit with their financial advisor or research financial advisors that can help them give to these nonprofits in the most beneficial way, to the nonprofit and to themselves." Readers are encouraged to consult their financial advisor or tax attorney directly.

"Our primary goal is to help our clients in financial planning. Within the financial planning process, we’re able to help them know how much is needed to sustain their lifestyle and how much extra they could give to charities.”

The first Tuesday after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend has become a day dedicated to helping charitable organizations. It's called "Giving Tuesday," designed to be a day when we think of those in need amid the holiday shopping season. South Dakota Gives is an organization established to make finding and giving to South Dakota-based nonprofits easy. The 2023 South Dakota Day of Giving is on Giving Tuesday, November 28, 2023. On this particular day, people like you, who love South Dakota and SDPB, can join a giving movement across the state. So, mark your calendars! Make a gift, become a sustaining member, and tell someone why YOU support SDPB and how they can do the same. When you donate on Giving Tuesday, every cent goes to SDPB so we can continue to provide the programming you love. Thank you to all our donors and supporters who make our organization a success. Your support makes an impact on us every day of the year.
