Happy February, readers! This month is a time to celebrate many things. It is a month to honor loved ones, and here at SDPB, we have so much love for our members. We want you, our readers, to know how much we appreciate what you do for us and others around the state through your support. February is also a time to observe Black History Month. Pages 8-9 will highlight some of the most anticipated programming we will air to celebrate, including Shuttlesworth about a freedom fighter, various episodes of Independent Lens, and, and Gospel, a two-night exploration of gospel music, the dominant form of African-American religious expression. Our feature on pages 4-5 is an inside look at our own Politics & Public Policy Reporter Lee Strubinger’s podcast Short Walk, a deep dive into a memorable and devastating event that won’t soon be forgotten. Keeping It Local on pages 6-7 gives a rundown of coverage for high school sports and how you can watch them, including oral interpretations, gymnastics, and wrestling. Lastly, keep up with our legislative coverage running through March on the SDNet app, and online at SD.net and SDPB.org. Coverage is also available on our SDPB News social media channels on Facebook and X (Twitter); hashtag #SDLeg. Additionally, SDPB TV has special programming and wonderful opportunities for you to show how much you care. We hope 2024 is off to a great start for you. Enjoy the issue! Gratefully,

SDPB Releases 9-par t Podcast i n Febr uar y

Former South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg was removed from office in June 2022 after he struck and killed pedestrian Joe Boever in September 2020. During the police investigation, Ravnsborg maintained that he did not know what he had hit until Boever's body was found the following day. Investigators told Ravnsborg that Boever's face went through his car’s windshield, and Boever’s glasses were found inside the car. Boever's body was found a couple feet from the side of the road with a flashlight still on. Ravnsborg stated that he never saw the body that night. He also denied being distracted by his smartphone, but data indicated that he was on his phone until about a minute before the collision. Ravnsborg was charged with three misdemeanors. Ravnsborg is the first statewide elected official to be impeached, removed from office, and barred from holding future office in the state. Events like these are not easily forgotten, but many details have been lost during the other big story at this time, the COVID-19 pandemic. Lee Strubinger, SDPB’s Politics & Public Policy Reporter, hopes to fill in some gaps with a podcast he will release this month titled Short Walk.

4

"It's a bit of a double entendre," said Strubinger about the title of his podcast. "Part of it has to do with Joe Boever, who was walking towards his house along the side of the highway. We don't know why Joe Boever was walking along the side of the road. He probably thought he was going for a short walk out to his truck and back to his house. Without giving away too much, this phrase also comes up later in the series."

what his struggles were in terms of things that we all struggle with as we go through life. That's one of the things I’m proud of, actually feeling like we get a chance to know who this South Dakotan was whose life was unfortunately taken way too early."

Strubinger's interest in this story stems from the fact he has been covering Ravnsborg before he announced his run for Attorney General. His intimate knowledge of the case assists in telling the whole story.

"Because I was there during the House impeachment panel process and the subpoenaed testimony that occurred during that time, I know where a lot of new information came from. SPPB has been covering Ravnsborg ever since he ran for the United States Senate in 2014, and we have a unique opportunity to tell this in a rich audio format. It's a fascinating story that feels like a true crime story. It has political intrigue and nice music underneath it to carry us through that whole journey,” said Strubinger.

"I was there as it unfolded over time. I've covered Ravsnborg's political career close to the beginning of it. Part of this podcast is telling the full story of how this attorney general, who critics say had never even tried a jury trial before or had ever won an election before, became the state's top law enforcement official,” said Strubinger. “There was also a lot going on at the same time; we were maybe only half a year into the COVID pandemic. Between news that was coming out of that and then this fatal accident, there was so much happening news-wise at that time that it would be helpful for listeners to understand what we all went through at this particular time. This podcast doesn't really go into COVID or any other stuff happening simultaneously; it's just a look at this impeachment process.” Along with learning about the story, Strubinger and the SDPB Journalism team discovered a good deal about the legislative and legal processes.

Every detail of the nine-part podcast has been carefully planned.

Short Walk spans nine half-hour episodes available Tuesday, February 20th. Episodes can be downloaded or streamed on any preferred podcast platform, or found at SDPB. org/shortwalk, along with other resources about the podcast.

"There's this weird grey area in the criminal courts that this particular case fell under in terms of charging him with something higher than what he got. That's what the prosecutors were saying. There was criticism about that," Strubinger continued. "I think we all learned something new. Impeachment of a constitutional officer is something we've never gone through as a state before, which is part of why I wanted to do a podcast about this. To see across a 9-episode span, how did this all play out? We set a precedent here, so we saw first-hand what this totally new thing looks like, and now we've gone through it together as a state." Another goal for this podcast is highlighting South Dakotan, Joe Boever. "The heaviest part of the podcast is thinking about the death of Joe Boever. The unsatisfying part of the whole story, as I saw it play out, was the way Joe Boever was just a name in the paper, a name we read aloud, or an image we saw on television without really knowing who he was. I devote some of this story to letting people know who Joe Boever was, what his interests were, and 5

From the blues to hip-hop, African Americans have been the driving force of sonic innovation for over a century. Musical styles come and go, but one sound has been a constant source of strength, courage, and wisdom from the pulpit to the choir lofts on any given Sunday: the gospel. In the two-part, four-hour docuseries, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. speaks with dozens of clergy, singers and scholars about their connection to the music that has transcended its origins and now spreads “the good word” all around the world. The series features interviews with notable names including Dionne Warwick, U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock, Rev. Otis Moss III, Professor Michael Eric Dyson, and awe-inspiring musical performances of Gospel favorites “Can’t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus,” “Total Praise,” and others from talents including The Belle Singers, Cory Henry, Celisse, and more.

Every Single Note Born out of the Lakota Music Project, the Music Composition Academy encourages middle school and high school students to create original compositions for string quartet and wind quintet. Coached by professional composers from South Dakota and around the country, every note in the compositions is written by the students…many of whom have very little musical experience. The MCA project hopes to encourage students in what is possible with music composition, while also giving them validation with performances of their compositions by members of the SDSO. Wrestling season is coming to an end in South Dakota. For the Slykhuis family, it’s a part of life, but not in the same way it is for most. They’re wrestling officials, meaning they have the best seat in the house for prep wrestling in South Dakota. This year, Clark Slykhuis ushered in his 21st year of being a wrestling ref with a meet in Parker. While he loves what he does, this event became more special because he got to share it with his nephew Maddix, who was officiating his first-ever event. Maddix’s dad Cory, who is an older brother to Clark, also has close to two decades of wrestling officiating experience under his belt.

WRESTLING OFFICIATING IS A FAMILY AFFAIR Nate Wek, Sports Content Producer

Maddix, who is now 19-years old, and a pre-nursing major at the University of South Dakota, grew up wrestling for Tea Area, but for his father Cory and uncle Clark, they grew up wrestling in Scotland for local legend Jim Kocer. With Clark and Cory jumping into the officiating scene, Maddix grew up watch his uncle and dad from the sideline. They’d take him to various wrestling events, including state tournaments. Fast forward to 2023 and Clark, Cory, and now Maddix are working as wrestling officials in South Dakota. And while there are challenges in being a referee in today’s culture, being able to remain a part of the sport, while doing it together, is a memory they’ll remember forever. Watch the SDHSAA State Wrestling Championships on SDPB! Coverage info found above. 9

MATTHEW MOEN, FRIENDS BOARD MEMBER

SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT Every month, we dedicate this space to getting to know an individual or organization that is actively supporting the mission of South Dakota Public Broadcasting. Matthew Moen, former Distinguished Professor emeritus at the University of South Dakota and new Friends of SDPB board member, sat down with us to tell us about why he chose to join the board and take part in serving the state through his support. "I joined the board just a few months ago,' states Matthew, "so I'm just getting started. I'm a new member of the board and anxious to learn more about it and start helping out." Matthew shares that SDPB aligns with his interests and values, which is one of the perks of being a supporter. "The most direct alignment would be the excellent coverage of the legislature. I have a Ph.D. in legislative studies, so that's a direct connection. It does so many wonderful features chronicling the life of particular communities and Dakota Life, which I think is both fun and insightful. It has a real range of programing, but all united by the common theme of serving the citizens of the state."

Respectful is how Matthew describes public broadcasting and explains his reasoning. "It's respectful of civility. It's respectful of complexity. A lot of things are complicated, and it deals with the complexity. Its productions also recognize that we as people are imperfect. We mix things up, we mess things up, maybe accidentally or intentionally. There is a sensitivity to getting it right about how people are and what they're trying to do. [SDPB] is good at discerning genuine motivations." Matthew praises the ability to bring unbiased and thought-through information and education to the state. "What I like so much is that [SDPB] brings quiet, reasoned dialog. We're in an era where there is more screaming about problems than fixing the problems people face. One of the wonderful niches of South Dakota Public Broadcasting is that it occupies that civil, reasoned public space to discuss how we can improve people's lives. It takes us out of the less hopeful dialog that we see. That's a wonderful public service."

“It's an enriching educational experience. Having spent my life as an educator, we're always in the business of grasping for more knowledge, and public broadcasting provides it.”

- MATTHEW MOEN 12
