Letter from Superintendent Jeff Apse May Issue 2019

Community Task Force on Facilities Continues its Work Our Community Task Force on Facilities continues to make progress. The Task Force has met eight times this school year. The 27-member Task Force is charged with providing community input to the St. Charles School Board on the development of a facility improvement plan, the solutions being considered for the plan, the budget, and the funding options for the solutions. Some of the solutions we are exploring will require tax payer support in the form of a bond referendum if we are to be able to pursue them. The Task Force is also charged with helping to identify the solutions that would require tax payer support and possible referendum formats. Upon the completion of a facility assessment in the fall, the District presented a summary of the assessment, the issues that were identified, along with possible solutions including concept sketches of those solutions to the Task Force in December, 2018. Since December, Task Force members have shared their thoughts on possible solutions and the District has responded to the input from the Task Force by making adjustments, scaling things back, and making revisions to the concept sketches. The District presented a revised draft of the facility plan including revised concept sketches to the Task Force in late January, 2019. The Task Force had an opportunity to process the revised concepts, and in early March was asked to help rank the issues and solutions. The Task Force was also asked to share their thoughts on which elements of the concepts they preferred when comparing the December and late January concept sketches. Since early March the District has been taking into consideration comments and suggestions from the Task Force and has been working on making additional revisions to the plans and concept sketches. The Task Force has discussed possible dates for bringing the solutions forward to our tax payers for a vote. As our efforts have progressed our project timeline has been adjusted multiple times. We feel like we are at the point where we are closing in on a consensus on the solutions we would be willing to bring forward to our tax payers for a vote, and that a November 5th referendum is a possibility. A number of hurdles would need to be cleared before that happens including the Task Force finalizing a recommendation for the School Board to consider, the School Board’s official approval to move forward with a recommendation, the State of Minnesota’s approval of the plan we develop, and the School Board passing a resolution authorizing the bond election. We are not at the finish line yet, and still have some work to do refining our plans and working toward a consensus among our Task Force. We have made a lot of progress since October. All meeting minutes, Task Force presentations, presentations to community groups, plans and the concept sketches that we have explored are posted on the Task Force’s website at https://www.scschools.net/page4947. You can also find the Task Force’s website by going to the District’s website at https://www.scschools.net, clicking on the “District” button on the menu at the top of the screen, and clicking on “Facilities Task Force." If you have questions on the facilities improvement plan we are developing, and where we are at in the process, please ask a Task Force member, call me at the school at (507-932-4420), email me (japse@schs.k12.mn.us), or stop by. Thanks for your continued support of St. Charles Public Schools,

Jeff Apse Superintendent of Schools

Art Club takes their brushes to Math

Peer Helper Corner

Some of the many High School Art Club students pose in front of the mural that took months to create. Through the request and vision of high school math teacher, Mr. Kittleson, the Art Club students worked together every Wednesday after school from September through March. From a calculator shaped dog to a protractor turtle the nature-inspired mural was designed for Mr. Kittleson to reference while teaching, creating an interactive and artful way of learning.

Peer Helpers have had a very successful year with 83% of the peer helper team matched currently and/or at one time with students in both buildings. They have been doing a fantastic job connecting with these students and subsequently has made a world of difference for many of them. Due to several snow days and the rescheduling of many sporting events our annual mini-peer helper retreat has been postponed until May, the kids are hopeful they’ll be able to pull something together to wrap up the year. It’s evident the school year is winding down for everyone so revisiting the importance of being there for each other as well as the student body has been encouraged at our monthly meetings. We will be saying goodbye to our seniors at the end of this school year and saying hello to six new incoming sophomores next year! The recruiting/nominating process will happen within the freshman class in early May. Current peer helpers will talk to all freshman classes about the positive qualities of a peer helper, reiterate the fact that our group has been around for more than 25 years and above all, share that we believe many times students prefer to talk to their peers about things going on in their lives – forming the framework of our group. All freshman will then be asked to nominate (individual ballots) one person in their class that they would trust to discuss a personal problem with. Nominations will be tallied and voted on by current peer helper team members and students will be notified accordingly.

Art Club in the Math Room

All peer helper members will be required to attend our annual Fall Peer Helper Retreat at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro the weekend of September 21-22, 2019. More details will follow late summer.

College Visits A campus visit is a great opportunity to have a firsthand look at a college campus. It is important to walk around campus, view dorm rooms, sit in classrooms and take other chances to explore before making a postsecondary choice. It is suggested that students begin visiting colleges during their junior year and continue into fall of their senior year. If a student is planning to go on a college visit during a school day, prior approval is needed and the following form found on the school website will need to be completed. http://www.scschools.net/page/4513

Kids in the Kitchen

2019 Summer Art Camp

Students in grades 4-6 recently had the opportunity to participate in a wellness activity entitled “Kids in the Kitchen.” This event was organized by Tracie Schaber, Laura Schaber, and Justine Reinhardt via a grant from the Minnesota Department of Education. Students were able to learn about food safety and preparation, hand hygiene, as well as nutrition facts and serving sizes. Students were able to assist their classmates in preparing fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies. Each student also was gifted a reusable straw to encourage recycling and waste management. Parent and high school student volunteers were also arranged to help with this event.

This year St. Charles Elementary will be hosting a Summer Art Camp. A variety of classes for K-6th grade will be offered. Registrations will be held in April/May through Community Education. More details to come!
