Letter from Superintendent Jeff Apse Dear Parents and Community Members,

November Issue 2021

I’m writing this on October 15, 2021. While we are still dealing with COVID-19 frustrations in our schools, we are in a lot better place than we were at this time last year. We are fully in person and have been so since the beginning of the school year. We have also been able to offer a full slate of student activity programming. Student field trips are being planned, and our buildings feel fully alive. The frustrations people have today with COVID-19, wearing masks, and everything else that COVID has brought will hopefully continue to disappear as we keep moving forward. Our school district is not in a position to get wrapped up in the philosophical and political conversations surrounding the pandemic. Our focus is working to take steps necessary to help ensure that we can continue to provide in person programming for our students. News media outlets have been regularly reporting the soon to be available Pfizer vaccine for children ages 5-11. The date for when the Pfizer vaccine for children in that age group will become available has been the subject of much speculation for the past couple of months. Recent news has been positive, and it is sounding like there is a very good chance that the vaccine will be available by mid-November. Local Public Health officials have shared that the Pfizer vaccine will consist of a dosage that is less than what is being administered to adults, and the vaccine will consist of a two-dose series with a 21-day waiting period from the day of the first shot before the second shot can be administered. Regardless of how people may feel, this is progress, and a game changer for our schools in the fight against COVID-19 as it will provide those families wanting this extra protection for their children the opportunity to choose to pursue it. Aside from COVID-19, the construction projects at the High School continue. Our staff and our students have handled the challenges that the construction projects have brought on amicably. Our High School Principal, Dr. Bernard, has done a great job communicating the progress being made, adaptations to challenges, and has done a great job chronicling the projects online via this website: https://sites.google.com/schs.k12.mn.us/schs-construction/home. As the school year progresses, different phases of the project will be completed, and renovated areas and new additions will be gradually turned over to us for use by our students, staff, and community members. We anticipate that the high school building projects will be completed by late winter. Thanks for your continued support of our schools. Sincerely,

Jeff Apse Superintendent

2021-22 Peer Helper Program The Peer Helpers program is a program in which a variety of interpersonal helping skills and behaviors are taught and assumed by a student who chooses to develop a helping role with others. The group’s (composed of sophomores, juniors and seniors chosen by their peers) aim is to be available for those students who are in need of counsel and may feel more comfortable talking with a Peer Helper. Peer Helpers can be used to help a student day to day life at SCES/SCHS; mediate tension or conflict between students, assist a student who is having difficulties at home and/or listen and talk to a student who may just need a trustworthy ear. They provide help with tutoring, mentoring, and mediation. They are trained to understand confidentiality, mediate conflict, listen effectively and know their limits…and refer students to the school counselor or the school social worker when necessary. Our Peer Helper team recently put their hearts and heads together at the 33rd annual peer helper “affective” training at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro. The peer helper program is one of the most distinguished and longest-running programs of its type in Minnesota. In 1988 School Social Worker Barb Jahnke and Teacher Mike Smith began the program with a half-dozen student volunteers. A few years later, Ellen Rollie replaced Barb, and ten years ago, Theresa Nunemacher stepped up and joined Mike as the two current co-advisors. But do not be misled, Peer Helpers is a student-driven program, an effort by students and for students to help make a good school a great school. Over more than three decades, hundreds of peer helpers have been trained, and they continue to make SCHS a safe place with a positive school culture. They will continue to meet regularly throughout the year for support, training and problem resolution. This year’s team consists of Seniors: Abbie Disbrow, Nora Fritcher, Carter Mathison and Andrew O’Hara. Juniors: Grace Buringa, Jacob Meyer, Destany Moore, Todd Mueller, Riley Ward, & Gavin Warmkagathje. Sophomores: Jonas Barclay, Alex Burlingame, Eric Gasca-Rojas, Thavyah Matthews, Scarlett McConnell Elder & Payton Schiebel. Please say hello & thank these wonderful students for their time and efforts when you see them! Advisors: Mike Smith and Theresa Nunemacher
