Letter from Superintendent Jeff Apse March Issue 2021

Dear Parents and Community Members,

The 2020-2021 school year has been difficult. COVID-19 has brought forth a number of challenges. I feel bad for our students and for the opportunities lost. I feel bad for our students’ parents for having to endure and juggle a myriad of challenges figuring out how to balance the pressures of their professional lives with what has seemed to be an ever changing and unstable landscape for their child(ren)’s education. I am thankful for our faculty and staff and their willingness to take multiple leaps forward learning new instructional delivery methods, new ways to engage and communicate with students and their parents, and for their commitment to keep pushing through the frustrations. Every day has brought forth a different challenge, and just when it would seem like you have something figured out and/or that you are in a position to anticipate the direction we were heading, COVID-19 would pitch another curve ball, and force us to go back to the drawing board to figure out how to sort through the new deck of cards it just dealt. As I write this on February 2, 2021, we are celebrating the fact that we are in the midst of just our third consecutive week of full in person instruction for our Pre-K through 6th graders this school year and our third consecutive week of Hybrid instruction for our High School students since the end of October. Since the second semester began, we have been slowly, but steadily expanding our High School Hybrid program to provide High School students in need with more days of in person instruction. We are also celebrating that after having to shut down student activities programs at the end of October, they have been back in full swing since January 4th. While we have had a couple of COVID related issues within our programs, we have worked through them, and are thankful to be able to offer these opportunities to students when just a couple of months prior it was looking like it was not going to be possible. It has been a weird year. Bringing in person programming back has had its challenges. Our staff had done a great job juggling the ever changing requirements passed down by our regulatory agencies. The future outlook for our schools and how we will be able to deliver in person programming to our students is the most positive it has been since the pandemic began. With multiple COVID-19 vaccinations now available to the public and with educators and childcare providers being considered a priority, the end of the pandemic is in sight. We feel good about the direction we are heading and the prospects of closing out the 2020-2021 school year in a positive fashion, and we have a positive outlook on what the 2021-2022 school year may bring. Thank you for your patience and support. Sincerely,

Jeff Apse Superintendent of Schools

High School Principal - Dr. Bernard One of the messages that I have tried to deliver to the students this year is that you need to focus on having fun. We have been presented with a situation that is out of our control. One of the things we can control is how we react to situations. We can choose to constantly focus on the negative around us or we can focus on the positive. Some people within our community have experienced tragedy during this time. As a school we have tried to give the students a source of positivity in a time that could be overwhelmingly bleak. As we move into spring, the weather continues to get better, and we will be able to move to more outdoor activities again. I challenge everyone to think of the future with positivity and ways you can focus each day on having some fun as it will help to look past some of the negatives. As always, please reach out to me personally if you are having difficulties in any area of school. I will continue to be here to help when you need help. Think Spring!

One Act Play Sub-Section Champions! Giving Back to the Community In January, the Student Council sponsored The Giving Project in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day and invited students and the community to donate needed items for the Saint Charles Hometown Resource Center. The Resource Center provided a list of needed items and collected donations at the end of the week. Items were delivered by Student Council. In addition to The Giving Project, a video was created providing a student message reflecting on adversity, kindness, working together and change, just to name a few. Quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were recited by the students including, "The time is always right to to do what is right." You can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/wUZHEcdPObw

Track and Field The 2021 St. Charles track and field season (grades 7-12) will begin on March 29th this year. More information will be available as the season draws closer. If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to contact Coach Eric Klein at eklein@schs.k12.mn.us. Eric Klein - Boys Head Coach

Boys Basketball Kooper Vaughn became St. Charles' Boys Basketball all time leading scorer on January 19th in the Boys Basketball Season Opening game against Fillmore Central. Kooper trailed Aaron Leistikow, who poured in 1298 points from 2010-13, by 6 points going into the game for the top spot on the all time scoring list. Not only did he surpass Aaron during this game, he poured in a school record of 63 points as the Saints won 91-77. The 63 points ties for the 8th most ever in a boys basketball game in the State of Minnesota. It's also the most points ever scored by a player in this part of the state, per the Post Bulletin. In addition to the 63 points, Kooper converted 18 out of 19 free throw attempts which also placed in the State Basketball record book, where he already was the all time state leader for free throw percentage in a single game. He made 26 out of 26 in a game vs. Rochester Lourdes during the 2019-2020 season. Remarkably, the 26 for 26 is number 2 in the entire country in a single game consecutive free throws made. Congratulations Kooper! Your hard work and dedication towards becoming this type of player is a model for what a person is able to do in any extracurricular field if they devote the time and energy to achieve at the top level. Great job! And congratulations to not only the Boys basketball teams, but every extra-curricular activity at SCHS. With every activity delayed due to Covid concerns, each group is first and foremost thrilled to simply participate, be out of the house, and move slowly back towards some sort of normalcy in our daily routines. Despite late starts to activities, pauses in the seasons when the activities did begin, or no fans in the stands, the kids are simply relishing each event, regardless of what the scoreboard or the judges might say about the final score or rankings. Great job SCHS! Terry Knothe Boys Head Basketball Coach

St. Charles Public School News Walking Bus creates a safe walk for Elementary students

March Issue 2021

One of the challenges we are trying to navigate this year is the reduction in capacity for buses. Because of this reduction, we've been forced to limit the bus rides we can offer students, which has meant more kids riding their bike and walking to school than we've seen in a long time. While much of our community has very safe routes to school, the train tracks and Highway 14 create a less than ideal situation for some of our walkers. Enter: The Walking Bus. The Walking Bus is a group of High School Students who are willing to donate their time walking Elementary students to school. Each morning and after school, our Walking Bus leaders meet students along designated routes and walk them to school safely. Our routes were built to help kids we knew were walking through some of our less safe areas. These volunteers have weathered, literally, the morning cold and afternoon rains to help keep our youngest learners safe. Thank you Walking Bus Leaders!

FFA Members Compete in Region 8 FFA Contests The St. Charles FFA Chapter recently had three teams compete at their region contests recently. St. Charles competes in Region 8, which is made up of 33 schools and FFA chapters in Southeastern Minnesota. Due to COVID-19, the FFA contests have moved to a virtual format for 2020-2021. The Meats team consisted of Todd Muller, Gavin Warmkagathje, Caleb Wobschall, and Iyan Welch participating that included identification of meat cuts including species name, primal name, retail name, and cookery method, beef quality grading, beef yield grading, and placing classes of wholesale and retail cuts of meat. Todd Mueller placed 1st overall as an individual and Gavin Warmkagathje placed 3rd. Their team placed 1st, advancing to the state competition this spring. The Fish and Wildlife team consisting of Kate Lindsey, Hayden Schaber, Anthony DeJager, and Lucas DeJager identified various species of Minnesota mammals, fish, reptiles/amphibians, insects, and non-game/game birds, exam that include various wildlife and natural resources topic, and a current issue activity focusing on environmental analysis and species of concern. Hayden Schaber placed 7th and Kate Lindsey placed 8th individually. The team placed 2nd in the region and will advance to the state contest. The small animals team consisting of Ethan Warmkagathje, Alayna Reps, and Emma Decker completed identification of dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, and other small animals, anatomy and parasite practicums, and a written test assessing their knowledge of various small animals and veterinary science practices. We can’t wait to see these teams compete at the state contest and improve in the future!

St. Charles Elementary News March Issue 2021

SCES Parents and Guardians,

We have made it through what has been a very interesting first half of the year; coupling both construction and changing pandemic requirements has been difficult for both students and staff, but we have settled into something that is beginning to feel a little more like normal. I know there has been a lot of discussion about a COVID Slide and the effect this will have on kids, so I’d like to share some quick, easy strategies for helping to ensure the success of your children. First, and mostly simply, parents can read to or listen to their children read – every day. A half of an hour of literacy each day, either reading themselves or listening to parents read, can do so much for the success of a young reader. If you can do more than a half-hour, great! Another quick strategy for improving the literacy of your children, is talking to them about what you are reading. Kids imitate their parents; if they see you reading, if you talk to them about your reading, they will be more likely to enjoy and find success in their reading. Math can be a little bit more difficult to find simple strategies, but there are definitely creative ways to help your child’s Math skills. Simple things like doubling a recipe when cooking (and making your children do the doubling) can ensure that your child is using the skills they are getting here. Another great way to continue Math practice is games – Cribbage for example, is a fantastic way to add 30 minutes of quick addition facts to your child’s daily routine. It is also a great way to spend some quality time with your kids! Ryan Ihrke Elementary School Principal

Global Minnesota Virtual Visit 4th graders in Mr. Muschler's class had a "virtual visitor" from Mexico in January. Sofia Huitron joined them from Cancun, Mexico, her hometown. She currently lives in Washington D.C., but was visiting home. She told students a legend of Mexico, and answered questions about her upbringing in Mexico City and Cancun. She came to us from an organization called Global Minnesota, whose mission it is to connect Minnesotans to other cultures. In the last few years we have had visitors from Ghana, Amsterdam, Korea, China, and Brazil.

Art Class with Mrs. Ihrke In early January, Kindergarten through 3rd grade collaborated to create a winter mural. Installation took place with the help of Principal Ihrke and Art Teacher, Mrs. Ihrke. Nice job kids!

2021 Spring Testing at Elementary School The St. Charles Public Schools continually assesses student performance to provide parents and staff with the data needed to make informed instructional and educational decisions. We use different measures to chart your child's and our district's educational progress. Several assessments are given district-wide. However, these types of measures do not always paint the entire picture of a child. Every day, teachers observe and use classroom evaluations that also help us more fully understand your child's academic strengths and weaknesses. The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) is one measure the district uses to measure educational progress in our district / school and is used to meet the state and federal requirements. These state tests are given to students in a district once a year, based on their grade level and subject area. The range of dates that students will be taking the MCA at St. Charles Elementary are listed below by grade. Reading MCA III for Grades 3-6 The Reading MCA is an online assessment divided into several segments. It contains multiplechoice items where the student selects the correct or best response along with technologyenhanced items. Approximate time to complete the assessment is 180 minutes. The MCA Reading Assessment will be completed between April 7-23, 2021.

Mosaic designs with cubes GATE students were challenged to create 3-D mosaic designs using Rubik's Cubes. They first mapped out their design on grid paper and then visually transferred their 1-dimensional creations into 3-D form using the cubes. The group photo (on top) is a mosaic of our St. Charles "SC" logo! Go Saints!

Math MCA III for Grades 3-6 The Mathematics MCA is an online adaptive test. This means that the test will adjust to each student’s skills. The online assessment contains traditional multiple-choice items along with technology-enhanced items where students use the capabilities of the computer to select one or more points on a graphic, drag and drop a graphic from one location to another or manipulate a graph. Approximate time to complete the assessment is 120 minutes. The MCA Math Assessment will be completed between April 7-23, 2021. Science MCA for Grade 5 The Science MCA is an online assessment with traditional multiple-choice items along with technology-enhanced items where the student uses the capabilities of the computer to create a graph or data table, click on a hot spot, or drag images or words into designated response areas. Approximate time to complete the assessment is 120 minutes. The MCA Science Assessment will be completed between April 26- May 5 2021. Additional testing information and resources for St. Charles Elementary are located on the School website: https://www.scschools.net/page/4542

The St. Charles Foundation for Academic Excellence board members are very proud of the St. Charles School District students and staff. Sadly, the 2020 annual recognition awards banquet was cancelled due to Covid19 protocols. The students listed below received their award of excellence and the foundation awarded 21 graduates of St. Charles High School with a $750 scholarship. The scholarship will be paid to the student upon completion of the first term in college or technical school.
