Scranton Softball Head Coach Mia Collarini Mia Collarini made quite an impression during her recently-completed fouryear career as a member of The University of Scranton softball team. Now she'll look to make even bigger headlines when she takes over as head coach of the program for the upcoming 2012 season. She replaces Colleen (Mahon) Moyer, who led the Royals to an overall record of 79-82 record (.491) over the past five seasons, including three Landmark Conference tournament berths (2008, 2010, 2011). A native of nearby Jessup, Collarini is a 2011 graduate of Scranton with Bachelor of Science degrees in counseling and human services and history and is currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in school counseling. She becomes the 12th head coach in the program’s 35-year history. Collarini enjoyed a highly-successful career as a four-year member of the Royal softball program. A two-time all-Landmark Conference selection (1st team in 2008, 2nd team in 2011) and a 2008 firstteam South region selection in Scranton’s previous affiliation with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), she finished her career as the Royals’ all-time leader in walks (66), third in at-bats (405) and doubles (28), fifth in hits (125) and triples (10), and sixth in sacrifices (11). Collarini, who served as team captain her senior year, batted .309 for her career, including a .401 average in 2008 as Scranton won a school-record 27 wins and advanced to the Landmark Conference postseason tournament in the league’s inaugural season of competition. That 2008 season is one that Collarini will likely never forget. She set Scranton season records for runs scored (46), walks (23) and at-bats (137), and her 55 hits were the third most in the program’s history. She also belted 15 doubles and five triples, which is tied for second and fourth most, respectively, in Scranton history. Collarini was just as successful in the classroom, too, earning a spot on the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll three times (2009, 2010, 2011) and

was named third-team District II all-Academic by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) this past spring. She also served as a member of the History Club, Colleges Against Cancer, Counseling & Human Services Association and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Jane Johnson has worn many hats during her 22year affiliation with The University of Scranton. This spring, she’ll rejoin the softball program to help former Scranton standout Mia Collarini transition from playing to coaching. The upcoming 2012 season will be Johnson’s third as an assistant softball coach, having served previously under the late Jerry Alunni, a tenure that included a 17-win season in 2004, the most victories for the program since 1990. Johnson has also been a highly-successful head coach of the university’s women’s tennis program. From 2001-2004, she led the Royals to a 29-19 record (.604) that included a tie for the Freedom Conference regular-season title in 2002 and berths in the championship matches of the Middle Atlantic Conference tournament in 2003 and the first-ever Freedom Conference tournament in 2004. She was twice voted the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year (2002, 2003) by her peers and developed seven all-conference players along the way. Her career at the University began well before her appointment as head women’s tennis coach. Since August 1990, she has served as associate director of the University’s popular intramural and recreation program and continues to serve in this role. Her extensive background in coaching includes serving as men’s tennis coach at her alma mater, Marywood University, from 1992 through 1994 and as an assistant with the women’s tennis program there from 1990-1992. She has polished her coaching skills by working as a private tennis instructor and as an instructor at numerous camps and clinics throughout the summer months. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Marywood and a master’s degree in elementary education from the University. Jane and her husband, Rob, reside in Greenfield Township with their two sons: Tim and Kevin
