The Landmark Conference is a Division III athletics conference that was formed in the winter of 2005 in an effort to bring together colleges and universities from the Mid-Atlantic region with similar philosophies regarding the role of athletics as part of the overall collegiate experience. On November 30, 2006, it was announced that The Catholic University of America, Drew University, Goucher College, Juniata College, Moravian College, Susquehanna University and The United States Merchant Marine Academy had formed a soon-to-be-named Division III conference, with The University of Scranton becoming the eighth member in November of 2006. The most literal inspiration for the Landmark Conference's name comes from the many well-known physical landmarks of the MidAtlantic region encompassed by the conference. The name also reflects the significance of the institutions' decision to align themselves with other colleges and universities of similar size, educational philosophies, and high academic standards. It highlights the conference's intention to stand out not only in athletics, but also in academics, emphasizing educational achievement and the important role played by athletics in the undergraduate experience.

HEAD COACH MIKE BARTOLETTI Mike Bartoletti has set the foundation for the Royal baseball program. Twice in the last four years, the Royals have advanced to the championship bracket of the Landmark Conference postseason tournament, along with posting two winning seasons and one non-losing campaign. Since becoming a member of the Landmark in 2007, Scranton is 84-76-1 (.525), including a 40-32 (.556) record against conference opponents. Overall, Bartoletti is 134-198-1 (.404) in nine seasons.

Prior to his arrival in 2003, the Royals hadn’t enjoyed a winning season since 1990. After going through some growing pains in Bartoletti’s first five seasons, the Royals broke through in 2008 in their first season in the Landmark. They won a programrecord 26 games, including an upset of top seed Juniata College on its home field to move into championship bracket of the conference postseason tournament, where they eventually lost to Catholic University. Catholic once again ended the Royals’ dream of an NCAA tournament bid in 2011, taking the title with a 14-9 win in the first of two potential championship games. Nevertheless, Bartoletti’s peers recognized his work, voting the Royal coaching staff as the tops in the conference for the 2011 season. His impact on the program can’t be measured in wins and losses, but, more importantly, through his ability to recruit student-athletes who have been successful in the classroom and on the diamond. Bartoletti has landed and developed three of the program’s five Academic all-Americans as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, including 2011 graduate Chris Stallone, the program’s first three-time recipient. Stallone was joined on the 2011 team by fellow graduate David Giglio, who also distinguished himself by earning third-team all-Mid-Atlantic regional honors by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) along with being named first-team all-Landmark Conference for the second straight season.

ROYALS' BASEBALL 2012 Moving the program in the right direction wasn’t easy. Bartoletti inherited a team that won only three games the year prior to his arrival. And yet Bartoletti made an immediate impact in his first season, in 2003, as the Royals nearly tripled their win output. Even though Scranton managed only seven victories the following year, Scranton produced two all-Freedom Conference selections in outfielder Mike Urbanovich and infielder Michael Cottone. In 2006, the Royals won 17 games, the most for the program since 1990, while picking up a number of individual honors. Infielder Chris Psihoules was named the conference’s rookie of the year and was selected first-team all-conference, while junior infielder Mike Graziano earned second-team honors. In 2005, Bartoletti mentored Alex Beras, a four-year member of the Royal pitching staff who was drafted by the New York Mets. In 2007, Scranton won 13 games while three players — Psihoules, Graziano and pitcher Justin Champagne — earned all-conference honors. In addition to Beras, who spent four seasons playing professionally, 2010 graduate Todd McGee pitched professionally for two seasons in the Golden Baseball League and Frontier League, both independent leagues. Prior to his appointment, Bartoletti served as head baseball coach at nearby Lackawanna College from 1994-19. He led the Falcons to a five-year record of 111-86-2 (.563), which included five straight Region XIX post-season tournament appearances and four seasons with at least 20 victories (1995-1998). He also served as head women's basketball coach there from 1994-2001, posting an overall record of 163-40 (.802), which included a Region XIX championship in 1995 and five other runner-up finishes (19962000). He holds an Associate of Science degree in liberal arts from Lackawanna College and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a concentration in sports management from Robert Morris University in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. Mike resides in Old Forge with his wife, Marylynn.

All-in-all, Bartoletti has coached two ABCA all-regional and 14 all-conference selections, which includes 2010 Landmark Conference Player of the Year Chris Bligh and 2006 Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year Chris Psihoules.

HEAD COACH MIKE BARTOLETTI/ASSISTANT COACHES Randy Shemanski is entering his eighth season as pitching coach.

THE UNIVERSITY

A native of nearby Waymart and current resident of Dunmore, Shemanski perfected his craft on the high school and collegiate level. He was a pitcher on a Western Wayne High School baseball team that won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) District 12 title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the state tournament his senior year. In addition, he was twice named first-team all-Northeast Athletic Conference (1994, 1995). He enrolled at then Fairleigh Dickinson University-Madison, now Fairleigh Dickinson University-College at Florham, and led the pitching staff with a 1.50 ERA in his freshman year, which is still the third lowest single-season ERA in school history. The Devils capped off that season by defeating King’s College in the championship game of the Middle Atlantic Conference tournament and advancing to the NCAA Division III tournament. In 1999, he was awarded a bachelor of arts degree in English/communications. Prior to his appointment as Royal pitching coach, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Western Wayne High School in 2002. The Royal pitching staff has shown signs of tremendous improvement under his tutelage. This past spring, Rocky Sawyer earned firstteam all-Landmark Conference honors after leading the staff in wins (6), ERA (2.26), innings pitched (55.2) and strikeouts (61). Two other hurlers — Robert Della Polla and Corey Gorman — each won five games and the pitching staff's combined ERA of 5.06 was the lowest

ROYALS' BASEBALL 2012 during head coach Mike Bartoletti's nine-year tenure. In 2010, Tim Reiser and Justin Champagne won five games apiece — the most wins by Scranton pitchers since 1997 — and relief specialist Kyle Fox was named second-team all-Landmark Conference. Randy is the assistant sports information director at the University. He currently resides in Scranton. Brian Felkowski enters his second season as an assistant coach with the Royals, helping the team in all facets of the game. A 2006 graduate of the University with a bachelor's degree in elementary education, Felkowski was a four-year letterman as a pitcher for the Royals. The lefty made 47 career appearances almost exclusively as a reliever, striking out 72 in 79.2 innings. Brian is a 2002 graduate of Abington Heights High School in nearby Clarks Summit. He teaches fourth grade in the Delaware Valley School District and currently reside sin Clarks Summit. Mike Guy is in his first season with the Royals and works primarily with the team's hitters and catchers. He is a 2007 graduate of Salem Community College with an associate's degree in psychology, and a 2009 graduate of Maryland-Eastern Shore with a bachelor's in secondary English education. He was also a two-year letterman as a catcher for the Hawks. He appeared in 79 games, 60 as a starter, hitting .191 with four doubles, a triple, nine RBIs and scoring 21 runs. He also threw out 26 would-be basestealers in his career. Prior to joining Scranton, he served as an assistant coach at Abington Heights High School. Mike is a 2005 graduate of Wallenpaupack Area High School in nearby Hawley, where he is currently employed. He resides in Scranton.

2012 OUTLOOK

T

THE UNIVERSITY

OF

SCRANTON BASEBALL TEAM

he University of Scranton baseball team is coming off its second trip to the Landmark Conference championship in the past four years. Unfortunately, the Royals were defeated in the championship round of the conference playoffs in both 2008 and 2011. They enter the 2012 season with lofty expectations as they eye the school's first ever conference title. Head coach Mike Bartoletti returns after presiding over the resurgence of the program. He took over a Royals team that had not won more than 15 games since 1990. He led Scranton to a school-record 26 wins in 2008 and nearly matched that total last season as the Royals went 24-18. The Royals have averaged 21 victories over the past four years.

S

cranton will rely heavily on an experienced pitching staff as it tries to win 20-plus games for the third time in the past five seasons. The Royals return their three top starters from a season ago, as well as four other pitchers who are expected to contribute heavily on the mound this season. Senior Rocky Sawyer anchors the pitching staff after going 6-3 with a 2.26 ERA and 61 strikeouts while earning all-Landmark Conference first-team honors last season. His presence at the top of the rotation should give the Royals one of the top starters in the conference and the region. Junior left-handers Bobby Della Polla and Corey Gorman also return after both won five games last season. Della Polla led the Scranton pitchers with 61 innings while going 5-2 with a 3.84 ERA and 59 strikeouts. Gorman was nearly as good, going 5-2 with a 4.20 ERA and 51 striketous in 49.1 innings. He threw seven strong innings, allowing just two unearned runs, to propel the Royals into the conference championship with a 7-3 win over Moravian in last year's playoffs. Also returning to this year's pitching staff are juniors Matt Mosko, Matt Marinelli and Ryan Eden, and sophomore Chris Rom. The quartet combined for 33 appearances last season, including Mosko's team-high 11. He and Marinelli are expected to bolster the bullpen this season after splitting time between starting and relieving the past two seasons. Eden will split time between the bullpen and first base while Rom will continue in his role as a lateinning reliever after finishing tied for second on the team with 10 appearances in relief last year. Sophomore Chris Maglione will sit out the season after having offseason shoulder surgery.

ROYALS' BASEBALL 2012 The Royals also welcome a stable of eight newcomers to the pitching staff who are expected to contribute in 2012.

O

n offense, the Royals face the task of replacing four regulars from last season's lineup who all played in 30-plus games and hit over .300. Center fielder Christ Stallone graduated after amassing more than 200 career hits, while first baseman David Giglio (first-team all-conference in 2011), catcher Jeff Manahan (second-team all conference in 2011) and right fielder Jason Lane (.321, 20 runs, 27 RBIs in 2011) also graduated. The Royals return an experienced infield, where seniors Matt Rayha, Jesse Outhouse and Rich Pohl all played in at least 25 games last season. Rayha split time between shortstop and second base, hitting .313 with 26 runs scored, third most on the team. Outhouse hit .333 with a pair of homers, and Pohl hit .291 with 20 runs scored and seven stolen bases. Junior shortstop Tim LeCompte also returns after hitting .274 with 13 RBIs last season. Senior Mark Grambo and junior Ryan Eden will be in the hunt for time at first base while junior Anthony Duchnowski and sophomore Mike Trabulsi are in the mix at third base. Scranton also welcomes five infielders who are expected to push for time at all four positions throughout the season. In the outfield, sophomore Mike Gaeta returns after hitting .264 with 23 runs scored and 19 RBIs in 39 games last season. Junior Greg Monastra will see time in the outfield and at designated hitter after hitting .300 with two homers in 50 at bats last season. Senior Sean Butler will also turn his focus to the outfield after splitting time in the field and on the mound in 2011. He hit .276 with eight RBIs in 29 at bats last season. Sophomore Alex Occhiboi also returns from a shoulder injury that limited him to just nine at bats in 2011. The Royals have also added five freshmen who will see time at all three outfield spots throughout the season. Behind the plate, junior Michael Amaturo takes over the bulk of the catching duties after hitting .406 in 32 at bats last season. Sophomores Eric Pizzico (.333 in 45 at bats in 2011) and Eddie Ravert are expected to spell Amaturo at various times during the season. The Royals also added one newcomer behind the plate, giving the team solid depth at the catching position.

THE UNIVERSITY

OF

SCRANTON BASEBALL TEAM

Intercollegiate athletics are an important component within a comprehensive learning experience at The University of Scranton. Over the last 31 years, the University's student-athletes have achieved an impressive record: 84 NCAA tournament appearances, three national championships (two in men's basketball and one in women's basketball), 54 all-Americans, 25 academic all-Americans and 15 NCAA post-graduate scholarship recipients.

The University's heritage traces its roots to 1888 with the founding of St. Thomas College by the Diocese of Scranton. The school received its university charter in 1938. The Society of Jesus began administering the University in 1942, when Scranton became one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.

The University consists of four academic divisions: the College of Arts and Sciences, Kania School of Management, Panuska College of Professional Studies, and the College of Graduate and Continuing Education. Full-time undergraduate enrollment for the 2011 fall semester is 4,069.

The University awards bachelor's and master's degrees in a wide variety of programs in business, communication, education, health sciences, humanities, and natural and social sciences. Scranton also features strong pre-professional programs in medicine and law. The University has had well over 100 Fulbright and other international scholars since 1972, placing it among the top undergraduate schools in the country in this category.

The faculty, 85 percent of whom hold a doctoral degree, are teachers who also pursue scholarship and research, often involving students. The student-to-faculty ratio is 13 to 1.

The University offers five-year bachelor's/master's programs, a Doctor of Physical Therapy, an Honors Program, a FacultyStudent Research Program, study abroad, internships, Army ROTC and exchange programs with other Jesuit colleges and universities.
