Special thanks to Keith Neu for his sports photography. Every effort has been made to ensure that the information in this report is accurate and complete as of June 30, 2023. Dear Seven Hills Community, On behalf of our entire school family, I want to thank you for your support during the 2022-23 school year. It was, by any measure, another phenomenal year! ACADEMIC RECOGNITION AND COLLEGE ADMISSIONS

Again, this year, Niche.com named Seven Hills as one of the Best College Preparatory Schools in Ohio (#2 in the state) and, for the fourth year in a row, the Best Private School in Cincinnati. This recognition was based on a robust analysis of college placement, standardized testing, and school culture. In May 2022, 150 seniors, juniors, and sophomores took 376 college-level Advanced Placement exams. A phenomenal 91% of those exams yielded college-qualifying scores of 3 or higher. In addition, 85 students were named AP Scholars, scoring 3 or above on three or more AP exams. As usual, our students’ scores on each of the AP exams we offer were well above those of college-bound students both in Ohio and across the country. STRATEGIC PROGRAM INITIATIVES

In partnership with the Board of Trustees and school administration, the faculty and staff have continued to advance several key program initiatives from the Strategic Plan of 2019. In this, year four of our five-year plan, we have enhanced several key programs: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) For 2022-23, we have adopted a new Lower School science program for Doherty and Lotspeich. We have also made significant investments in Doherty’s Science Lab, Lotspeich’s Project Math program, the Middle School’s Innovation Lab and coding electives, as well as the Upper School’s variety of elective courses in science, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Civic Engagement and Global Awareness To help deepen our students’ understanding of world affairs, the Middle School launched a new, four-day civic engagement field trip to Washington, D.C., and the Upper School expanded the Civic Engagement Seminars and offered two new semester electives in African American and Gender Studies. We continue to invest in a host of new instructional units focused on contemporary and global issues in literature, history, and social studies, and offer rich elective courses focused on global issues, economics, and environmental studies as well as robust travel and exchange programs. Student Health and Learning Support Seven Hills is proud to serve students with a wide array of learning styles, and like schools around the nation, we have also seen a significant rise in students struggling with mental health challenges. To address these challenges, we have added a fifth guidance counselor and three more learning specialists to the faculty. We have also made a substantial investment in training for teachers with an emphasis on how to address the needs of a wide variety of learners.

4

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Consistent with our commitment to providing a warm, inclusive school community, our DEI team has launched student resource and affinity groups, orchestrated a host of communitybuilding activities, and provided student leadership training and professional development for faculty and staff. Fine and Performing Arts As we continue to leverage the capacity of The Schiff Center, under the direction of our talented fine and performing arts faculty, our students have performed in nearly two dozen large scale music and theatrical productions and fine art exhibitions, culminating in April’s launch of Arts Alive, a day-long, school-wide celebration of the arts. Athletics All told, our varsity athletes won seven MVC Championships, four sectional team championships, and, for the first time in school history, two state titles in the same school year. After adding a highly successful new Middle and Upper School squash program in 2022-23, we will now expand the Lower School athletics program, by adding several new team options as well as some intramural programs in kindergarten. In short, with your help, our superb faculty and staff have continued to enhance Seven Hills’ uniquely warm and inclusive community, one that inspires our students to reach their full potential, as learners and as people. Thank you for the important role you have played in helping Seven Hills fulfill its mission, preparing these remarkable young people for lives of meaning and purpose. You are a huge part of all we have achieved!

Warmly,

Christopher P. Garten Head of School

STEPHEN J. BAGGOTT Board Chair

6

STEVE BAGGOTT

Dear Seven Hills Families and Friends, As my final year as chair comes to a close and we gear up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the school, I am delighted to report that Seven Hills remains in great shape, well positioned to embark on its next half century.

Robust Enrollment

We opened the doors in August 2022 with a record enrollment of 1,070 students, including 169 new students and the highest retention rate (96%) in the school’s history. In addition, we continue to enroll students of color at much higher rates (39%) than our benchmark schools in the Midwest, enriching our learning community with families from a wide array of cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Strong Financial Position

The school remains in an enviably strong financial position: with no long-term debt, an endowment of $41 million, and ample cash reserves to protect against possible headwinds. Importantly, this strong position has made possible significant new investments in compensation, which have positioned the school to attract and retain its talented faculty and staff, even in the context of a national teacher shortage.

Facilities Enhancements

This year marked the first full academic year with the new Middle School. Designed with the unique needs of middle schoolers in mind, this facility received rave reviews from students and faculty alike. The Board also authorized several important investments on both of our campuses. We have made significant improvements to our already strong security system, installing a state-of-the-art network, linking more than 90 cameras and 200 cell phones, to provide real-time information to school personnel and first responders in the event of an emergency. At Doherty, we are revitalizing (and relocating) three classrooms that house the school’s ambitious art, drama, and music programs and refurbishing Jones Hall with new furnishings, paint, and flooring. On the Hillsdale Campus, we are repurposing the lower level of the Stoehr Gymnasium as a squash center, with four courts to accommodate the fast-growing interest in this lifetime sport. In addition, the Board continues work on the next phase of master planning for our campuses.

Head of School Succession

After a global search, the Board appointed Head of Upper School Matt Bolton to succeed Chris Garten as Head of School, effective July 2024. Beyond his strong experience as a talented educator, skilled administrator, and thoughtful leader, Matt will bring to his new role a deep understanding of and affinity for the Seven Hills community. We all feel very fortunate to have secured such a strong new leader to build on Chris’ exemplary work and guide the school into the next phase of its evolution. I also want to thank my successor, Lair Kennedy, for taking over as Board chair, effective July 2023. Lair brings a deep affection for the school, coupled with strong leadership and superb strategic and business skills. The Board, and the school, are in very good hands. Finally, on behalf of my Board colleagues, I want to express our abiding gratitude for your continuing support of this school. How fulfilling it is to be part of an institution that, as our mission statement says, “engages hearts and minds, guiding students to cultivate their unique capacities and preparing each for a meaningful role in a rapidly changing world.” As we celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the formation of The Seven Hills School, we celebrate, too, the proud traditions of Miss Doherty’s College Preparatory School, Miss Lotspeich’s Open-Air School, Miss Titcomb’s Hillsdale School, and the work of all who have helped sustain this legacy of excellence since 1906. Our past is rewarding, and our future is bright.

Sincerely,

Stephen J. Baggott Chair, Board of Trustees

FINANCIAL REPORT

Financial Report 2022-23

The Business Office of The Seven Hills School is responsible for the preparation, integrity, and fair presentation of the financial statements and other accounting information in this Annual Report. The school maintains a system of internal controls over financial reporting, which are designed to provide assurance to the school’s management and Board of Trustees that assets are protected and that transactions and events are recorded properly in the financial statements. The Board of Trustees, through the Finance Committee, comprised of trustees not employed by the school, has adopted an Audit Subcommittee whose duties include engaging an independent accounting firm, Mellott & Mellott, P.L.L., to ensure that the financial statements are accurately presented. The school has again maintained a balanced budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023. In the strategic effort to maintain the affordability of the school, the administration, faculty, and staff continue to find ways to reduce costs while persisting to prioritize teaching and learning. Schoolwide operating efficiencies have been gained by increasing energy conservation, pruning unnecessary administrative positions, rethinking studentfaculty ratios, and removing under-enrolled programs. The overall financial health of the school was again aided by the growth of the endowment, which provides funding for teacher salaries, financial aid, faculty professional development, and distinctive programming and technology. Both annual giving and capital gifts enrich every part of the school. Most importantly, these gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the full cost of educating each child.

Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Racheal Quinn and a team of diversity coordinators in each division were hard at work fostering

this sense of belonging during the 2022-23 school year. Each division

has a faculty DEI committee in addition to a diversity coordinator, who bring different perspectives based on their disciplines and experiences in education.

“We have made a large push toward cultural inclusion, that is heritage months, cultural holidays, anything that makes students feel seen,” Quinn said.

Reading is one of the many ways Seven Hills teachers are ensuring

their students feel seen and are able to look at the world through new perspectives. Reading and narratives provide a window into different cultures and identities that teachers and students are utilizing at every level.

“A book is going to be able to tell a story and have representation.

Many students understand life through narratives. Looking at those

narratives is helpful, being able to have different people reading those narratives, writing those narratives, and illustrating those narratives really allows students to truly see diverse perspectives,” Quinn said.

Seven Hills welcomed Ellen Oh as this year’s Between the Pages author. During her presentations to Upper and Middle School students, Oh

discussed her literary journey, answered questions, and signed novels.

Oh is the author of the “Dragon King Chronicles” series, “Finding Junie Kim,” and many more incredible books. She is also the co-founder and

president of We Need Diverse Books, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting diversity within children’s literature. NOVEMBER 8-9 , 2022

Scattered throughout the Upper School, students shared their Personal

Challenge Projects ranging in topics from creating an art camp to beekeeping to creating an encyclopedia of dinosaurs. “The Challenge Project requires

teams in two events at the first Seven Hills’ hosted First Lego League presentation to a panel of volunteer judges,

including Seven Hills teachers and community members. The afternoon was filled with fierce

competition as the teams were pitted against each other to see whose robot could best follow a
