Eventually SAS visits Norway. Having a look at the Schneehase shows that its pages are full of articles and information around skiing in Norway.

Norway is a small country with many talented sportsmen and women. At the Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018 as well as in Beijing 2022, Norway ended up in first place on the overall medal ranking. This is quite incredible for such a small nation. In the Schneehase N°40 (2016-2019), Jojo Stutzer (SAS Zürich) and Pål Troye (SAS Norge) try to find the key to Norway’s success. In this article, they focus mainly on the men’s alpine ski team between 1998 and 2018. They start by looking into the ranking of the World Cup by enumerating the number of crystal globes the Norwegian men won. They then compare the number of points Norway won to the ones won by Swiss Athletes and their number of wins at world championship events. The numbers are quite impressive, and the authors are trying to explain the reason of this difference. Even if the Swiss team has more financial resources and a bigger pool of talents available, this does not necessary mean getting better results. The search leads the authors to Marius Arnesen, who has been a coach of the Norwegian Men Alpine Ski Team between 1998 and 2010. He describes the key elements to the Norwegian success story. According to his analyze virtues like continuity, harmony, modesty and perseverance have the greater impact.

Galdhöppiggrennet 1955

The author Peter Waser (SAS Zurich) relates in the Schneehase N°23 (1954-1955) the trip 10 SASler did to Norway to compete at the international "Galdhöpiggrennet" and meet with some friends. As we comfortably fly from Geneva or Zurich directly to Narvik in April this year, those SASler had quite a

few more changes on their way to the North. Starting in Basel, they went by train through Hannover, Grossenbrode, Gjedser and Oslo to finally arrive in Otta. All this dragging their ski equipment along with them! They mainly spent the long hours in the train playing guitar and jass and telling each other jokes. On the third day in the train a blond Norwegian girl gave them a quick introduction to Norwegian. Peter Waser describes it as an easy enough language. According to his opinion, whenever you do not understand something right away, just say "takk" and it will do. I wonder if this still applies nowadays.

Organisator Rolf Lonnevig

In Oslo, Rolf Lonnevig and Peter Mustad welcome the freshly arrived SASler from Switzerland. Many SASler from the newly founded Section Norge attend the evening festivities organized for the occasion. Once more, the Swiss Team boards a train until reaching Otta. From now on, the rest of the way is to be done by bus and on foot until the arrival at Spiterstulen. Many young people fare arriving in the next days for the completion. Most are from Norway but a few Englishmen are quite known to the SASler from the Anglo-Swiss. The Skiclub Hemming with SASler Rolf Lonnevig is the organisator of the Galdhöpiggen race. They rely on the competitor’s help to ready the track ahead of the race, as they have no machines to help them. Therefore, everyone is spending the days before the race helping getting the track in good shape and training. The mornings are dedicated to downhill and the afternoon to slalom. As there is no skilift, skiers are getting on top of the slope on foot. Once at the top, they take a break to catch their breath, put on their glasses and yell "Löipe" to get the track cleared before heading down.
