A

ugust is sort of a slow and lazy month. It sort of suggests the end of summer and the beginning of fall. In any case, let’s think about happiness. What is it? There are lots of definitions. Someone once said that the happiest person is not one who has everything, but the one who makes the most of everything. Be that as it may—each of us has his own version of what happiness is. Abraham Lincoln once remarked, “we are as happy as we make up our minds to be.” The secret, I think, is to realize happiness is not a fit. It is an achievement. We are happiest not making ourselves happy, but by bringing happiness to someone else. An old Hindu proverb expresses the idea by saying, “Help thy brother’s boat across, and lo! thine own has reached the shore.” What brings happiness to you is the happiness you bring to someone else.

One lesson from our Masonic creed is inspired by the Golden Rule; “Do unto others, as you would expect others to do to you.” That means we have to put ourselves forward in support of some one, some cause or some loyalty; such as, our philanthropy for our Shriners Hospitals for Children. To give our time, energy and resources to support those children and their families could be one of the happiest experiences of our Shrine allegiance. Remember the words of Helen Keller, who could have been the most unhappy person, being blind, deaf and speechless, all of which she turned into lifelong opportunities. She said, “what joy is like unto the joy of surmounting obstacles which once seemed irremovable and pushing the frontier of accomplishment further.” So, let August be your time of happy reflection!

hriners International announced the list of temples that have been awarded the 2011 Dromedary Awards, an annual competition that has been recognizing the best in temple printed and electronic communications for more than 20 years. Sahib has again won 1st Place in our category, for temples over 1,000 in membership. We had previously won 1st Place in 1998 and 1999, plus honorable mentions from 1996 to 2007. More than 100 temples from throughout the world sent in their very best magazine, newspaper, newsletter, Website or social media communication for judging. The printed communications were judged on design, grammar and graphic usage. All entries were judged by an impartial panel of marketing and communications professionals.

Thanks to all our contributors, its your content that makes the Reporter what it is. At the June unit/club head meeting, there was a spirited discussion on recognizing our Roadrunners, a subject I have strong feelings about. There have been several articles in the Reporter in the past, with photos and recognition of our drivers accomplishments, but we just don’t do this enough. Our drivers are just too modest. Chief Rabban Levan submitted an article this month, see page 26. The message I would like to get across, is one of our major shortcomings, is we don’t tell our members and the general public enough about what Sahib and the Shriners Hospitals for Children are doing in the area. Promoting the feats of our drivers helps tell our story. We need more of this promotion.

Potentate’s Notes

Nobles, I have just finished one of the most difficult tasks I have had to undertake; that is to decide who will be the 2011 Sahib Shriner of the Year. There are so many nobles deserving of this honor, particularly when it comes to narrowing down all their accomplishments, it’s even more difficult to make a decision. Our nobles work continuously without any special praise or thanks. My list of candidates for this honor includes almost all of our volunteers and I have gone over the list for hours on end to find that special Shriner. I have found such a Shriner who obviously stands out among all others. Whatever I have requested of him; even at times more than one person should give, he always fulfilled my requests. He has been asked for the near impossible and has always come through smiling. He is a perfect example of what a Shriner should be, as well as my friend and mentor. My choice for Sahib’s Shriner of the Year is Ill. Sir Louis H. Ortt, 33°, 2000 Potentate of Sahib.

Yours in the Faith,

Tom Millaway, Potentate

T

he first six months of 2011 are now history. In a way, I wish we could slow the clock down. We have had so many fun activities at Sahib during that time span. Time is flying and we have so much still to accomplish! Activities will slow down for the next few months, but we are planning a busy fall season for all of you Sahib nobles. Watch the calendar and you won’t miss our activities. Our August ceremonial will be on August 26-27; please try to attend if you can, and help make this a memorable occasion for the candidates. Many thanks to our First and Second Ceremonial Masters Carroll Scribner and Giles Light for all the work that they are doing, and of course their ladies. On Friday evening, under the direction of Ritual Team Director Ed Firquin, the cast will present an outstanding performance for us. On Saturday, our traditional bus trip to the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children will be very rewarding to our new nobles and their ladies. The bus trip is always a highlight for the candidates and ladies as well. The bus trip will be followed by our Shrine parade at the temple. Almost all of the units and clubs will be represented; hats off to Marshal Ron Enger for his work. We thank every one of you for

being there and supporting your temple. Let us not forget the Moslem feast put on by our Cabiri, and the ladies luncheon hosted by our Divan ladies with help from our Sahib kitchen. Last but not least, we all will attend the great Sahib Arch Ceremony put on by our Directors Staff, under the direction of Noble Director David Bruce; many thanks to a very dedicated cast. Thanks to all who will make this a memorable day. The Imperial session in Denver was successful and is being reported elsewhere in the Reporter. This Imperial session was very important, as third party co-pay was an important article on the call. I want to personally thank all of the unit and club heads, committee heads, and our Cabiri for helping make the first half of 2011 a success; and a special thank you to all you dedicated nobles that are behind the scenes helping to make things happen. Our entire Divan is excited and planning our second half of the year. Come and enjoy our great Sahib Shriner activities. During the second half of 2011, let’s work diligently at establishing a sound membership program. It is vital for the long-term success for Sahib that we do!

Chief Rabban’s notes by Charles M. Levan, 33°, cmlevan99@aol.com

T

he Imperial Session is history. Our new Imperial Potentate is Imperial Sir Michael G. Severe from El Jebel Shriners in Denver, Colorado. The new Imperial Outer Guard is Imperial Sir James R. Smith from Ben Hur Shriners. We are looking forward to the 2012 convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is good to be back in Florida. The high altitudes of Colorado took their effect on many of us. This month is the Ceremonial. There is still time to get more candidates, but time is running out.

Membership, membership, membership! We brought back a Bronze Banner for our membership efforts in 2010. Let us not rest on our laurels, but continue on our quest for the Gold! Money Mania tickets are selling slowly. I know, December is a long way off, but it will be here sooner than you think. Tickets don’t get sold sitting in someone’s briefcase. Sell them while you are on vacation. Sell them to your neighbors. Turn the money in as soon as possible.

Assistant Rabban’s notes by Bill Zurlo, stawilrlo@aol.com

M

ay is finally over which included an overabundance of travel; goes with the territory. June was to be a slow month in which we would recover. The Divan has had several meetings two of which we reviewed the “Call” for Shriners International Conference held in Denver, Colorado. I promised several nobles a comprehensive review of our conference, which will be in the September Reporter. We closed down two weeks in July and it seems that endless cleaning and painting will cost the temple about $5,000. I have committed my services to Bingo to drive the golf cart as long as I am available. Our Noble James McNabb has passed away. Jim not only drove the cart for Bingo and Thursday luncheons he also attempted

the upkeep of these carts. Noble Malcolm Van Dyke, III has volunteered for cart upkeep and to help start a cart team (see page 25 for more information.) Please consider volunteering for this important function in the temple’s life. I thank you in advance. As an aside, if you enter the lounge on the southwest door by the atrium you will notice a mural on the wall; I understand that Jim McNabb painted this for the temple. Our Ceremonial will be in August this year and we are in need of candidates. Please visit your Blue Lodges and actively seek candidates. That’s all for now. May the wind always be to your back and your goal to your front. God Bless America

hope everyone is enjoying their summer where ever they are. Please remember that our next meeting is the first Friday in September at Peridia and we would be pleased to have any of you in attendance. You don’t have to live in Manatee County. Come on out and join with the largest club in Sahib. The 2nd Annual Manatee Shrine Club Steak Fry (second annual at Sahib) will be held on October 9 this year due to scheduling difficulties, and is open to all. Please note the date change, especially those of you who got tickets at the Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance. This event is open to all and is a great deal for a large steak with all the trimmings for only $8 for members and $11 for all others. Come on out and enjoy a great steak dinner. The board of the Manatee Shrine Club is working on a possible committee set up for the ballpark next year. If this plan works out, all volunteers will volun-

teer for a particular committee with a specific job. Please let me know at (941) 907-0746 or Ron LeVene at (941) 753-3769 what job you would like and if you would like to be a chairman of any of the committees. Call Ron for more information on how this may work. A presentation was made at the last meeting to both the men and the ladies groups. You will be hearing a lot more about this proposal as time goes on. It is my desire to give back more to the members of our club and you may have noticed a few more get togethers paid for by your club. Of course, it is still one of our goals to help our great temple in many ways. We have given money for a new irrigation well, a donation to the Sahib Hospital Transportation Fund, and have designated the tip money for future ball games to go to the transportation fund also. ell, since last month’s column, no one from the Motor Corps has come forward and said, “You’re fired.” Not even a word from Donald Trump with that message. So I guess that means I’m back as correspondent for another month. A dozen bikes from the Sahib Shrine Motor Corps and the Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association (several of the Motor Corps are also members,) provided escort duty for the official visit of the Grand Master of Florida to Masonic District 27 on Friday, June 17. Most Worshipful Jim J. Harris and his wife, his Marshal Terry Parker and his wife, along with Past Grand Master Dick Martinez and his wife, were escorted on SR-64 from I-75 to the Renaissance on 9th banquet facilities in Bradenton. The word is that they managed the entire trip without getting separated. Our Road Captain Dennis McGurk made sure that all

the traffic lights were green, it was a great ride and the Grand Master was appreciative of the escort. All in attendance received pins from the Grand Master. The Biker Billy Thursday night dinners are underway. We’re without Wally Lacey (Red Dog) this year, so we are under the command of Barry Hart (Policyman, sometimes known as “Little Wally.”) A lot of effort is required to put on these dinners every Thursday night for seven weeks, so we appreciate all the support we are getting and particularly thankful for the help of our ladies. We’ll be covering the Thursday night dinners through August 25. The Hillbillies will be back with their Thursday dinners on September 1. The Motor Corps will be participating in the Ceremonial later this month. We’ll be represented at the Tuesday night social for the candidates on August 23

We’re hopeful one of the new nobles rides a motorcycle. We don’t have too many birthdays and anniversaries to report in August. Birthdays for August are George Mitchell (Top Dog) on the 11th, George Nikias

(Papa Nick) on the 14th, Hampton Crimi (Sambo) on the 20th, and Lady Jill McGarvey on the 27th. We have two anniversaries in August: George Mitchell (Top Dog) and Lady Dianna on the 8th and Ed Jordan (Photoshop) and Lady Theresa on the 15th. The Motor Corps will be back with an article in the September Reporter. The big question is, “Who will be writing it?” Stay tuned.

o outdoor picnics or formal meetings planned until September, but please check with President Jack Watson (941) 240-5737 or 1st VP Bob ‘Mixmaster’ Somerville (941) 429-6433 for information on upcoming festivities. But while Sahib was closed in late June and early July, our nobles and ladies enjoyed Thursday noon lunches at Snook Haven. We invited the Venice Shrine Club to join us for the food, musical entertainment, and the great riverside scenery! Also, each Tuesday 7:30 a.m., rain or shine, 52 weeks of the year, we breakfast at the Olde World Restaurant in North Port for info, fun and fellowship. We invite any Mason or Shriner with their lady and/ or friends to join us for some friendly banter, and civic projects. And please continue to bring your old magazines with peeled off or blackened out address labels (rather than tacky-looking torn or clipped covers) to our gatherings for Second Vice President John Brophy. He and his gang will affix our North Port Shrine Club logos and distribute the magazines to four ALFs and medical waiting rooms plus five fire stations. At our May stated meeting, President Jack Watson finally received his gavel. (Some wag was overheard to ask if that meant we had finally decided to keep him!) Since then, many of our habitual snowbirds have fled north to the frozen tundra for the summer. We sent them off with compassionate donations of windshield ice scrapers, mosquito netting and tornado warning radios. Sickness and distress: Over 20 members of our club participated in the Masonic funeral service for Charter Member Noble Robert Adams who passed

away May 18. Noble Bill Athas continues his slow recovery from a long-term ankle problem, and Noble Chet Ray has returned home from rehabilitation. As we go to press, no one has identified our June Quotable Notable as Harold Meyerson, editor-at-large of American Prospect and the L.A. Weekly, who wrote on the 150th April anniversary of the start of the Civil War: “With its paranoid misreading of Obama as a socialist (echoing the 1860 South’s misreading of Lincoln as an abolitionist), with its zeal for confrontation and its utter disregard (evident in its 2012 budget proposal) for the minority poor, today’s Republican right betrays a mind-set that harks back to the secessionists who fired on Fort Sumter. Shutting down the government isn’t comparable to shooting it down, of course, but the South’s war on egalitarian government and labor standards threatens again to diminish our country.” So here’s our August Quotable Notable – What conservative pundit recently wrote, “If there were a Hamiltonian Party, it would be offering a multifaceted reinvigoration agenda. It would grab growth ideas from all spots on the political spectrum and blend them together. Its program would be based on the essential political logic: If you want to get anything passed, you have to offer an intwined package that smashes the Big Government vs. Small Government orthodoxies and gives everybody something they want.” The first non-club member to send the correct answer to the above e-mail address wins a free Tuesday morning breakfast for two with the North Port Shrine Club.

LOVS by Deanie Jacobi, President, HLJCJ97@aol.com A Donation from the Ladies of the Venice Shrine At the May meeting of the Ladies of the Venice Shrine (LOVS), we were privileged to have as our guest speaker, Bethann Demas, who is the Director of Public Relations, Outreach and Marketing at the Shriners’ Hospital for Children in Tampa. Ms. Demas gave an informational and inspiring talk describing

all the services available at the hospital. It was a proud moment indeed to witness President Deanie Jacobi and 1st Vice President Ruth King present a check for $1,500 slated for the General Fund and a $300 check to go to their Book Fund. The hospital was also presented with afghans and pajamas made by the Ladies of Venice Shrine Club.

137th Imperial Session – July 2011 by Bill Batten, Elected Representative/Sahib Recorder Emeritus

D

...the convention complex in Denver is by far, the largest I have ever seen...

enver, Colorado, welcomed the thousands of Shriners, ladies and guests who descended upon their city. Among those I saw in Denver were the Divan members of Sahib, Ill. Sir Tom Millaway, Charles Levan, Bill Zurlo and Connie Jacobi. In addition, Past Potentates Al Robinson and Don Vos, Nobles Bill Batten, Robert Rodd, Ken Pedersen, Bill Dove and several associate members. Upon arrival, the registration process for the elected representatives of the Iowa and Colorado Corporations proceeded very smoothly. Meetings were scheduled for various working committees commencing on Saturday at 7:00 a.m., and continued throughout the day. Again, on Sunday meetings continued, starting at 7:00 a.m., for some members in attendance and concluded in time for the commencement of the annual church service held at Trinity Methodist Church. Following this service, the official public opening was held at the Wells Fargo Theatre in the Colorado Convention Center adjacent to our headquarters hotel, the Hyatt Regency. Before reviewing the business and legislative activities at the session, a few overall comments should be made. I believe that the convention complex in Denver is by far, the largest I have ever seen. The Shriners occupied only a portion of the center. The theatre, where the sessions were held, could seat in excess of 5,000 persons. The acoustics, lighting, sound, video presentations, seating and air conditioning were all state-of-the-art. The comfortable seating was perhaps the most welcome, as we were seated for long hours in session conducting the business of our order, one day, Tuesday, for about 12 hours. The annual marketplace and a Shriners Village display area were also located in a portion of this huge convention complex. The market place was open for business and browsing. Visiting nobles and guests were able to walk up and down many isles where all types of Masonic memorabilia, clothing, jewelry and other booths and displays could be seen and examined. The Shriners Village area had displays of membership material, fundraising ideas, public relations material and awards material, as well as other items of interest. The daily routine for some of the delegates and representatives started at 7:00 a.m. for meetings, following that, the business sessions started at 8:00 a.m. or shortly thereafter. Among the first items reported on at the sessions, were the annual reports from various Imperial Committees, such as, Membership, State of the Shrine, Fundraising activities, Donor Relations and others.

These were all well prepared and presented to those in attendance. These were approved by the representatives. Prior to the presentation and necessary approval or disapproval of the 44 items on the call, a report was presented on the rulings and orders of the Imperial Potentate for the year 2010-2011. Among those orders was an Imperial reprimand issued on two members of the Imperial Divan, Ill. Sirs John Cinotto and Gene Bracewell, members of the Shriners Hospital Board of Directors, Past Imperial Potentates Ralph Semb and Raoul Frevel, Sr. One of the four, Imp Sir John Cinotto, agreed to the terms of the reprimand, and did not appeal the Imperial decision. The other three, made a formal appeal to the order, and the lengthy process necessary to conclude the matter was started. The Imperial committee on Grievances and Appeals gave a full report on their findings, and recommended that the Imperial order stand. Considerable discussion followed from the floor, as well as from those charged. After a long period devoted to the pro and con of the issues, a vote was called for. When the tally was received, the Imperial reprimand stood as approved, and the appeal was denied. In addition to those previously named, an additional member of the elected Divan, Imp. Sir Gary Bergenske was cited for improper conduct in contacting a witness against the members accused in an attempt to persuade her to drop her testimony. This was the first time in my memory that Imperial officers were so cited. The final order of business for the first day’s session was the election of the Imperial Potentate for the ensuing year, 2011-2012. After his nomination for the position of Imperial Potentate, Imperial Sir Michael G. Severe was duly elected as Imperial Potentate for the year 2011-2012. The election of the other Imperial Officers was held on the second day of the session. For the very first time in my memory, there was opposition in an election for an Imperial office for a member who was on the line. The office of Imperial Chief Rabban was challenged, and Past Imperial Potentate Ralph Semb nominated former Imperial Potentate Raoul Frevel for the position of Imperial Chief Rabban. A ballot was called for, and when the tally was received, Imperial Sir John Cinotto was declared the winner. The other current members on the line were elected to their new positions without opposition. There were two candidates for election to the Outer Guard position, and after the ballots were tallied, Noble Jim Smith was elected to that position. . . .continued on page 38

ho would have thought that after a very cold winter, the pendulum would swing the other way and give us record high temperatures. We are so happy that Noble Paul Pante is back with the heavenly music makers after some serious medical procedures, and... he is his usual self! We are contemplating a cruise to the Caribbean, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Mexico. We are also contacting other Florida bands to possibly join us. If any of the nobility is interested in joining us, please contact President Floyd (941) 747-0351 or Paul Pante (941) 351-1356. Cost for this trip will be $250 for

inside cabin and $325 for an outside cabin. The dates are October 31 – November 5, 2011. Should be fun. Our Sahib Ceremonial will be August 26 and August 27. The O.B. is looking forward to entertaining our new nobles. We will also be at the cocktail party on August 23 to represent our band. You do not have to know music to join us, just a desire to entertain and have fun. Remember, it’s always about the kids in our Shriners Hospitals for Children. I had the pleasure of attending this event which was held May 12-14 at the Tampa Airport Marriott Hotel. About 80 PR Chairmen/Directors attended from the temples and Shriners Hospitals for Children across the USA and Canada. It was indeed a wonderful opportunity to meet our colleagues and to learn from each other the various techniques used in providing PR for our respective temples and hospitals. The seminar included several classes run by specialists in a variety of subjects including: Making the Media work for you Public Relations on a small (or no) budget Understanding social media (Facebook, Twitter) Crisis management Revenue cycle, review of hospitals financials

and operations, getting hospitals to be Medicaid certified; length of patient stays. A session called PR Update was conducted by Marlena Lagina-Kliene of Imperial Public Relations. Her subjects included: The importance of the SHC Stylebook Several new PSA’s were shown. Negotiations for new partnerships are underway with several major Retailers and TV Networks. News on this subject is expected to be announced at the Imperial sessions in Denver. ell, we’re in the middle of summer and it couldn’t get much warmer. Just think back on the cold days of winter when we begged for heat like this. July was the Imperial convention in Denver for the Divan and a few other nobles and I missed out. I had a contract to shoot fireworks in Boca Grande on the 2nd and St. Cloud on the 4th. They estimated that 35,000 were in attendance for the show. It really sounded like that many at the end of the finale. I will miss doing the shows, as I plan on going to Imperial from now on. Hope all that attended had a great time. August brings Sahib’s ceremonial and new nobles. It’s not too late to sign up some good Masons to our fantastic fraternity. We will need as much support from our nobility as possible as many of our members are up north for the summer, bringing lower than normal

attendance. I can’t imagine what it would be like to join an organization like the Shriners and go to the ceremonial and not have but a handful of members to welcome me! When I joined the Shriners, the auditorium was full of happy-go likely members ready for a good time, and we had a good time. Our ceremony is open to all and we can’t fill a dozen rows of chairs. It is my wish that the events and fundraisers for Sahib and our hospital become fun events and not more like work. Let’s start with the August ceremonial and show the new candidates what the Shriners are all about. We tell everyone what a great philanthropy this is, Now It’s Time To Show Them! It is up to us to get more involved and to participate in our fundraisers, to keep our dues as low as we can. So nobles, enjoy the rest of your summer and then lets all work together to keep Sahib #1.

e’re back from some of the Dog Days of Summer months. Your Divan went to Grand Lodge of Florida held in Orlando, over the Memorial Holiday weekend. This was a very interesting event for us. Work has already started on our Shrine building and it looks nice. During our down time new canopies and a well is being put in to keep our grass and shrubs watered. People are busy working on equipment and floors to keep OUR Shrine in GREAT shape. June 1 the Divan was requested to come to Tatum Ridge Elementary Grade School where a check was

presented to Ill. Sir Tom Millaway for $307. This money was raised by the children of grades 1 through 5 by saving their old shoes and placing them in a container for recycling. These kids did it and were very happy to hear Ill. Sir Tom talk about our Shriners Hospitals for Children. He told them that they were our leaders of the future and to continue with their great project. As you come in the Shrine see the two collection boxes by the front doors, “Shoes for the Cure” and be sure to bring your old shoes and drop them off. This is a good cause to help others.

The new Imperial Outer Guard elected is James R. “Jim” Smith from Ben Hur Shriners in Austin, Texas. El Jebel Shriners did a great job making sure that all the guests from around the country and some from other countries were treated royally. Stay healthy, and remember those who are not.

Sahib Shrine Golf Cart Fleet by Malcolm H. Van Dyke II, mhvdii@comcast.net

A

re you aware that Sahib Shrine has a small fleet of golf carts? Three to be exact; two are extended length golf carts to carry passengers up to 7-8 per cart, the third is used for general building and lawn maintenance. With the tragic death of Noble Jim McNabb, the many years supervisor and maintenance man of the golf carts Sahib has lost his wealth of information on the history of our carts and the names of Sahib nobles who have volunteered in the past or are current drivers for the many events the carts are used for. I have been requested to assume the responsibilities of usage and maintenance of the three carts. While I have major golf cart maintenance experience, I have little to no information to draw on for drivers. Accordingly, I need your help. For the golf carts to do their primary job of transporting passengers at major Sahib events such as the Thursday men’s lunch we have to have drivers. Want to sit on your butt for a couple of hours, make friends, enjoy the weather, and drive? PLEASE contact me via any of the numbers/addresses listed below to volunteer. It does not take a rocket scientist to drive a golf cart. I can teach you to be a safe and competent driver in 45 minutes or so.

I work all week until 12:00 noon so cannot help drive for normal daytime events. I need one volunteer to drive each Thursday for the men’s luncheon and drive with me in the second cart for the once a month Pancake Breakfast. Did I mention that if you drive at the first Sunday Pancake Breakfast Sahib Shrine will pay you? Oh yes, your salary is a handful of those wonderful pancakes every hour or so that you drive, hand carried by you and eaten at the wheel while you park in the shade to eat them on your break. What do our golf carts accomplish for us? I have driven almost every monthly Sunday for the pancake breakfasts for the past year or longer and the public simply loves being picked up at their car and perhaps returned back after eating. Place a small child in the front seat and let him/her help drive the golf cart? That child will long remember and tell friends about driving at the Sunday morning monthly breakfasts. Jim McNabb and I drove the golf carts for this year’s Potentate Ball, at his request. Visiting Potentates and their ladies, being picked up in the back of our parking area so the ladies would not trip on their gowns and in high heel shoes, were aghast, speechless, thrilled and stupefied that this was happening.

SAHIB REPORTER Evidently Sahib Shrine (always in the forefront of all Shrines) is the only Shrine they had ever heard of that provided this courtesy. Favorable comments flowed like water over Niagara Falls. And I personally picked up several of these special visitors the very next morning for the monthly Pancake Breakfast and they were...AGAIN...absolutely amazed at this wonderful service. I couldn’t help but tell each and every one they were in Sahib territory now!

August 2011

So...you can see how very important this vital service is, that it continue, and that I need volunteer drivers. Contact me below 24/7/365 (home (941) 9556483; cell (941) 356-4614; email above) and let’s CHAT about YOU helping YOUR Shrine. If you see the garage door open and the golf carts being worked, it will probably be me doing my job. Stop by and let’s CHAT! If You Don’t Stand Behind Our Troops, Please, Feel Free ...To Stand In Front Of Them.

uch discussion was had at the June 4 meeting of club and unit heads about the unsung heroes of the Shrine, the Sahib Shrine Roadrunners. We see our hospital vans parked under the van port and quite often, the van port is empty, because a Roadrunner is taking a child to an appointment at Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Who are these nobles that dedicate their time and effort to transporting our children? There are thirtytwo drivers listed on the Roadrunners list headed up by Ken Clark, who keeps the system running smoothly. Drivers have as few as one trip to as many as 439 trips, as of June 6. The list is dynamic and changes daily. The current active driver with the most trips is Noble Jim Pinson with 403 trips and 51,584 miles. The list of drivers with over 100 trips is: Jim Pinson 403 trips 51,584 miles

These trip numbers and miles are very impressive, but they do not reveal the countless hours spent on the road and at the hospital. These are truly dedicated nobles. Therefore, the next time you see one of our Roadrunner nobles say Thank You for all you do.

Page 38 . . .continued from page 16 137th Imperial Session A portion of this session was devoted to legislative items on the extensive call. Several of the items on the call were dealing with territorial matters, changes in membership to Shrine Associations, jurisdictional corrections and “house keeping” clarification matters, and felt to be of little interest to Sahib members. Other items were withdrawn by the presenters of the item on the call and will not be covered in this report. The items that may be of interest to our members will be reported on. Also on this day, the approval of Emirat Shriners, U.D., of Heidelberg, Germany was approved and they were accepted as the newest temple of our fraternity. A delegation of the new temple was present, and they gathered on the stage and presented the flag of their country. It was placed and displayed along with the flags of the other countries where our Shrine temples are located. They will now be able to march and appear in their first Imperial Parade. The Annual Imperial Parade was held on July 4, starting at 1:30 p.m. It was a very warm, sunny afternoon with temperatures in the 92 degree area. The floats and marching units of the temples from many areas of the United States and Canada was very colorful and impressive for those watching along the parade route and past the reviewing stand. It was estimated that it exceeded three hours for the parade to pass a given point in the route. It was well worth watching. After the parade, it was a “free” evening for all. Most of the Sahib attendees and their ladies joined with Ill. Sir Tom Millaway and Lady Kaye for an excellent dinner at a nearby restaurant. The next day started as usual with early meetings for some and continuation of items on the call started at 8:00 a.m. This was the longest session I have ever attended, lasting for about 12 hours. Items that might be of interest to our members are as follows: Item #4 - Pertains to Article 12 of the Imperial bylaws. Section 212.1 Promulgation. The ritual of the order is promulgated by Shriners International and no temple may deviate there from. No amendments, alterations or additions shall be made to the ritual except by Shriners International. The Board of Directors may authorize the ritual to be translated into any language it deems necessary. This was approved.

SAHIB REPORTER Item #5 - Minor changes permitting military and diplomatic members in service of his country to petition any temple in the jurisdiction of which he may be stationed without reference to his actual place of residence. This was approved. Item #6 - Electioneering by any candidate for any temple elective office that he may be seeking was again defeated. Item #7 - Holders of a Demit must continue under the current jurisdictional and waiver provisions. This was approved. Item #8 - This item would have reduced from 3,000 to 2,000 the total number of nobles who would remain in a temple after demits to form a new temple from an existing temple. This was defeated. Item #9 - This was approved. It would permit the Grievances and Appeals Committee to select the format of the transcript to be provided to them of the proceedings held at the temple level. Item #12 - Would permit every temple to establish its own initiation fee. 2/3 approval required, this was approved. Item#13 - Approved. It would require 20 days notice to every noble prior to the sale, lease, exchange, mortgage or other disposition of all or substantially all of the property and assets of the temple. Items #14 and #15 - Pertaining to non-Shriners participating in Shrine or civic parades. Withdrawn. Item # 33 - Request for proposed new temple, titled Agila Shriners, opened under Dispensation in Mindanao, Philippines. This was approved. Item # 41 - This dealt with permitting our Shriners Hospitals to collect from patients or guardians, co payments, deductibles or other obligations, applicable to such private insurance coverage or government payments. This was approved. Needless to say, many of the items approved or defeated were heavily debated on by the representatives and proponents of the items. Some of the debates and discussions were truly eloquently presented. This took a great deal of time, but was well worth the amount of time spent. Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

August 2011 Among the many other items brought before the sessions were the annual reports from standing and appointed committees. In addition to those previously mentioned, the committee on time and location for future Imperial sessions made its report. Approved previously was the 2012 session in Charlotte, North Carolina, 2013 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and Minneapolis in 2014. Houston, Texas will hold the 2015 Convention. We will go back to Tampa, Florida in 2016. The Pageant for Imperial Potentate Mike Severe was held on Wednesday morning. It had a video presentation showing the highlights of his Masonic life as well as his personal life. His family was introduced, followed by many gifts and presentations from Shrines around the world. After this event, the Imperial Session was again called to order. Life Time Achievement awards were presented to five members, among those was Ill. Sir Richard Lynn, P.P. of Mahi Shriners and currently holds a major position in the Grand Lodge of Florida. The next item on the agenda was the Public Relations Presentation and the Patient Success Story was presented. This was an excellent presentation, and the two patients highlighted were marvelous examples of the many success stories from our Shriners Hospitals. This was very well received, and a video of the presentation will be made available to all temples. The Imperial Potentates evening was a country western musical event held in the Wells Fargo Theatre. It really rocked, and was well received by most attendees. All things said and done, it was a very busy session for all. I am indeed pleased and grateful for the opportunity to represent you as an Elected Representative at this session, and look forward to again representing you at the Imperial Session in 2012.

2011 Annual Oriental Guide Seminar by John Baylor, Bahia Shriners Oriental Guide

I

n March I attended the Annual Oriental Guide Seminar and membership was one of the main focal points in my visit to Oriental Guide School. Some interesting statistics were observed.... The peek age of new membership fell between the ages of 32-40!! (I thought that I would be one of the youngest to attend the seminar, but to my surprise, there were easily two dozen or so my age or younger—in fact one Oriental Guide in Rochester, NY, was 26 years old!) Out of 170 Oriental Guide attendees, there were at least 20-30 under the age of 40, 50-60 Oriental Guide’s under the age of 50. Another 70-80 Oriental Guides under the age of 60. Contrary to Bahia’s average age of 80, today’s average age of nobility is closer to 60-65. It was clear there was a new trend happening here. Our nobility is getting younger and more active! That was the good news. Of that discussion, there came the discussion of each age bracket and what realistic expectations of each. It was pointed out—that of the older nobility, it would not necessarily be realistic to ask the older nobles to bring in the bulk of new membership. A comment made by one Imperial officer was the conversation he had with his Dad. “Son, I am 84 years old—what possible friends I could bring in would not be active and may not be around long enough to make a difference?” A sobering statement, but true. With this realization came the following question/debate. “What are we doing to accommodate today’s new and younger nobility?” Some of you have seen the button I now wear— “But we have always done it that way”— with a red line crossed through it. This was the first thing they gave us at Oriental Guide School! I wore it for the first time last night for the stated meeting— (inside myself I was a little worried that some of the older crowd might take offense to it. But again to my surprise several of the older nobility came by and with a healthy smile, said they liked it!) Note, I found this to be the case while attending Oriental Guide School that it was not just younger nobility that had concerns, but even among the older Oriental Guides, that they too were concerned that—what we are currently doing may not be the best we can do with “today’s” nobility.

It was clear and accepted that change was inevitable, but change would not be easy. Which led to the next discussion— “Realistic Expectations.” I found this reassuring as I have personally gone through this in my day job. Working with and getting to know 200+ established distributors—then trying to educate them—has been a challenge. The good news is it has worked and CAN BE DONE! As our Gary Bergenske would say, “We have to Believe.” Baby steps—one smaller short term goals. Some of my observations and suggestions below. Please understand that these are in no order or priority—just as they come. The old notion of First Impression— like a job interview, we could improve both Blue Lodge and Shrine facilities. I understand fully that money is a priority, but with a little imagination and expertise, we can make some changes without breaking the bank. Whether it

be through painting old walls, updating landscaping or even some fresh flowers, we can start to update little things at a time to appeal to new membership. As suggested below, putting new members to work right away. Don’t let enthusiasm slip away. Whether it be the Circus, Oktoberfest or even participate in the next parade. Activity will be key. Be sure to include their lady! This was another subject that was of high concern at Oriental Guide school. It was expressed that the ladies sit in on similar talks like the men. This made sense to me, as I relayed most of what I saw back to Jamie. Note: Jamie was inspired by much of what she learned and volunteered for next year as a mentor/speaker for the new Oriental Guide Ladies. I believe there are three stages in membership that we need to observe— Future, Present and Past. This may help us in staying focused through the membership process.

ere it is the middle of the summer, how time flies when we are having fun. We had a great time at Supreme Session in Tampa. We did not have to travel very far, so our Potentate and Oriental Guide with their ladies attended the installation of our new Supreme Queen, Laura Richardson, on Thursday evening. I was pleased that Sarasota was well represented. I was fortunate to travel to Massachusetts in July to witness the Supreme Queen’s visit at Aleppo Shrine in Wilmington. What a great day for the ladies of Oppela Temple and for Aleppo Shrine as well. We do not have sessions in June, July or August, but we still are busy. We are planning a very special luncheon to take place on August 20 at noon at the Venice Masonic Lodge. We would love to have all the

ladies attend who are not able to come to session in Bradenton. We would love to have you call a friend and invite her as well. Any Shrine lady, who would like to join us, is more than welcome to see what we are all about. We are going to have a summer lunch followed by socializing. Our patrol is going to perform, and we have engaged some very special musical entertainment for your listening pleasure. We look forward to greeting you all at the pancake breakfast when you visit our craft table. We help with your shopping needs for upcoming birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. As well, we support our children at the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Hope you all rest well. Please mark your calendars for August 20 and take care everyone.

This project was started by Mrs. Boyd four years ago as a math project to see how many tabs equal to the student’s weight. The project was to last one year but the next

school year the students brought in tabs and has continued ever since. One of the prizes for the class that brings in the most pull-tabs is a trip to the Sahib Shrine Circus. People who live in that neighborhood are also bringing in tabs and giving them to the class. This year’s total is 126.4 pounds! Thank you Mrs. Boyd and students.

York Rite – Conscience and the Craft by B. John Ross, KYCH, BjohnRO@comcast.net Questions on Religion and Freemasonry The world of Masonry is vast, complex and rich, but it is as nothing compared to the immense sweep and scope of thought, faith, history and culture contained in the word “Christianity.” As a professed and professing member of the Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church; the author never found any conflict between the lodge room and the sanctuary. And indeed, as the Reverend Doctor Norman Vincent Peale, one of the best-known Christian and Masonic authors remarked, there can never be conflict between Christianity and any organization which constantly urges its members to live a moral life. Following are questions often asked by those who are not members of the Masonic Fraternity. The author assumes responsibility for the answers drawing upon the best-known and most respected writers. Is Masonry a Religion? No, not by the definitions most people use. “Religion” as the term is commonly used, implies several things: a plan of salvation or path by which one reaches the after-life; a theology which attempts to describe the nature of God; and the description of ways or prac-

tices by which a man or woman may seek to communicate with God. Masonry does none of those things. We offer no plan of salvation. With the exception of saying that He is a loving Father who desires only good for his children, we make no effort to describe the nature of God. Moreover, while we open and close our meetings with prayer, and we teach that no man should ever begin any important undertaking without seeking the guidance of God, we never tell a man how he should pray or for what he should pray. Instead, we tell him that he must find the answers to these great questions in his own faith, in his church, synagogue or other house of worship. We urge men not to neglect their spiritual development and to be faithful in the practice of their religion. As the Grand Lodge of England wrote in “Freemasonry and Religion” Freemasonry is far from indifferent to religion. Without interfering in a religious practice, it expects each member to follow his own faith, and to place above all other duties his duty to God by whatever name he is known. Masonry itself makes only a simple religious demand on a man—he must believe that he has an immortal soul and he must believe in God. No atheist can be a Mason. (Jim Tresner, Ph.D., 33°)

Scottish Rite – The Trowel by Lou Ortt, PP, 33°, lhortt@verizon.net

T

he trowel is an instrument used by operative masons to spread the cement which unites the building into one common mass. From months of use in spreading and smoothing the cement, the trowel becomes worn and needs to be replaced. After years of labor, the master workman also becomes weary and is forced either to lay down his tool in retirement; or to answer the call from his heavenly father. The building they made remains strong and its beauty is there for all to see. We as Free and Accepted Masons are taught to make use of that trowel for spreading the cement of brotherly love and affection. But here, again, the trowel after much use becomes worn and the Master Mason will also retire; or be called to the Celestial

Lodge above, but the cement they have spread during their time will live on forever. When we who are the current workmen spreading the cement lay down our tools, who will replace us? Have we gone out and found replacements that can keep the temple beautiful and clean and continue to spread brotherly love and affection? Let each of us remind our brothers that Scottish Rite is having a reunion on Saturdays October 22 and 29. To keep the fraternity strong and healthy we need to continue our education and that can be done through the Scottish Rite Degrees. These degrees will make us more informed Masons and better enable us to continue to exemplify the teachings of the craft.

. . .continued from page 48 Reflections of a Mason’s wife my young husband petitioned the local lodge and was accepted. He worked at the memorization of the degrees with a dedication I had not before seen in him. He attended lodge regularly and was soon working his way through the chairs of his lodge. With each new step, his confidence in himself grew, his maturity increased, his moral values became more firmly entrenched. Although I was vaguely aware of these changes, it was several years before I fully realized to what extent Masonry

Jim Smith Connie Jacobi was affecting our lives. I can’t recall where we were, or the words my Mason spoke, but suddenly the light bulb came on, and without doubt I understood, and feel even more strongly today, that everything my husband is, and everything my children and I are, is so intricately interwoven with his Masonic beliefs, values, and responsibilities that our personal lives and our Masonic lives are one. At nineteen, I would not have thought of having a network of friends and support as exists in the Masonic Fraternity. Just to mention a few, there’s the Masonic wife (a nurse) who worries about my husband’s dietary habits; the Mason who offers to take my younger son for a weekend when he knows I’ll be temporarily a single parent; the Mason who has spent hours arranging activities for the ladies for Grand Lodge session, and the one who volunteered his wife to drive me around town if I needed her. I know that if ever I am in physical, emotional, or financial need, help is near, and that a Mason is only a phone call away. I love the man my husband has become even more than I loved that naive nineteen-yearold boy I married twenty-three years ago. I love the Masonic Fraternity and its principles of living, for making him the man he is. And, so, I finally get around to what I’ve wanted to state for so long, but lacked the nerve to say, thank you, Masons everywhere. I love you all! New Terms Enhance Membership Efforts Back in 1872, when the Shriners fraternity was established, it made perfect sense to emphasize the middle-Eastern motif of the organization by naming it the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. While the fraternity is still based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth, neither that tongue-twisting formal name – nor even the more commonly-used name of Shriners of North America – fit the organization today. Today, there are active members of the fraternity located around the world, and an increasing effort to reach and recruit new members on an international scale. It is important they be acknowledged in the name of the organization. Consequently, at the 2010 Imperial Session in Toronto a resolution was passed to officially replace the corporate name, The Imperial Council of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America. The resolution also stated that Shriners International should replace the name or any abbreviated versions of it (such as Shriners of North America). Nobles are encouraged to use Shriners International when referring to the fraternity, both in speech and in any temple publications they produce. Also, just as a reminder, at the 2002 Imperial Session, a proposal to replace the word ‘temple’ with the word ‘Shriners,’ when the term is used as a proper name for a group of nobles was

passed. For example, Mecca Temple is now Mecca Shriners. The word temple can still be used to designate general groups of Shriners, or the building where Shriners often gather. For example, there are now 193 temples located in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Republic of Panama and The Philippines, with another temple in Germany currently under dispensation. There are also affiliated clubs located around the world. Whether we are attracting interest and members globally or locally, we want to be sure we make it as easy as possible for potential Shriners to understand who we are and what we do. Therefore, it was also decided that when speaking to or providing materials for nonShriners, it is fine to refer to a temple with a secondary references of ‘chapter’, which is also a clear indication that we are a fraternity. All of these changes are part of an overarching effort to increase membership by using terms people everywhere can understand, accept and respond to in a positive way. Additional efforts include the website beashrinernow.com, which is specifically for potential new members. The future of the fraternity depends on increasing membership. While these efforts are important, it is equally critical for every Shriner to be willing to share his interest in and commitment to the fraternity with those around him.

Reflections of a Mason’s wife from Juana Weatherall, wife of Bro. James Weatherall, P.G.M. Arkansas

I

Perhaps I was afraid you would think me silly, or out of place or worse yet, insincere. Knowing that I probably will never stand before any of you and verbally express my feelings, I hope you will not be offended that I take this means to communicate my long-silent thoughts.

Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

I married a young man when we were both nineteen years old. We were sure that we were mature adults ready to take on the responsibilities of adult life, not realizing at the time that we were such novices. As soon as he was old enough; . . .continued on page 45

As most of you know, many businesses have some kind of collection boxes on their counters, so why not one of ours? Call the Sahib Office at 366-4449 if you can arrange a placement.

Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of November 30, 2010, they have collected 70, 508 lbs., for a total of $33,776.93 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Call: Laura Burgess (941) 758-9196 or Marylou Ellis (941) 484-0089 or Chickie Johnson (941) 966-2678 or Connie Lawson (941) 758-8274 or June Hutchenson (941) 723-1994

Calling All Hillbillys! 30th Annual Imperial Hillbilly Convention September 29 to October 2, 2011 Ya’ll gotta come this year, its right here in Sarasota and everything will be held at Sahib Shrine. Clans will be coming from all over, lets show them what a great clan we have here in Sarasota. Check out our web site: www.hillbillyconvention2011.com You’ll find all the convention information, schedules, contact info, vendor and registration forms. Not a Hillbilly yet, join us for the convention and we’ll make ya one. Talk to any cuzzin from Clan #78 at Sahib for more information or join us Thursday nights for the Hillbilly buffet. Fun and good times will be had by all while we raise money for the Shriner Children! See pages 36 and 37 for the registration form and schedule. We can’t grow, if they don’t know!
