Notes from your Divan

Potentate’s Message Greetings Nobles, ATTENTION: Sahib WILL NOT be dark this July. It’s business as usual. There is going to be a July Birthday & Anniversary Dinner Dance, sponsored by the Past Potentate/Divan Ladies. Theme is Country-Western, so pull out your cowboy and cowgirl duds and boots and ride on in Tuesday, July 10. The first six months of 2018 are now history. In a way, I wish we could slow the clock down. Time is flying and we have so much still to accomplish! Activities will slow down for the next few months, but we are planning a busy Fall season for all of you Sahib nobles. Watch the calendar and you won’t miss our activities. I want to personally thank all of the unit and club heads, committee heads, and our Cabiri for helping make the first half of 2018 a success; and a special thank you to all you dedicated nobles that are behind the scenes helping to make things happen. Our entire Divan is excited and planning our second half of the year. Come and enjoy our great Sahib Shriner activities. During the second half of 2018, let’s work diligently at establishing a sound membership program. It is vital for the long-term success for Sahib that we do! At the writing of this article, I’m preparing my trip to Daytona for the Imperial Session. There will be many issues on the table and I’m looking forward to representing Sahib Shrine.

Red, white and blue those colors are, And every state has its very own star. Hold up the flag, hold it up high, And then say “Hurrah, for the Fourth of July!” -Author unknown Hope everyone has a safe and meaningful Fourth of July. Until next month, be kind to one another. Yours faithfully,

Chaplain’s Notes Lou Ortt, PM, Chaplain, lhortt@verizon.net As we celebrate the birthday of our nation, it seems appropriate to consider an invocation written by Bishop John Carroll in honor of President George Washington’s birthday in 1794. It is very relevant still in these contentious times at home and abroad. “Almighty and eternal God, you have revealed your glory to all nations. God of power and might, wisdom and justice, through you authority is rightly administered, laws are enacted, and judgment is decreed. “Assist with your spirit of counsel and fortitude the president of these United States, that his administration may be conducted in righteousness, and be eminently useful to your people over whom he presides. May he encourage due respect for virtue and religion. May he execute the law with justice and mercy. May he seek to restrain crime, vice, and immorality. “We, likewise, commend to your

unbounded mercy all who dwell in the United States. Bless us and all people with the peace which the world cannot give. “We pray to you, who are Lord and God, forever and ever. Amen.” In Memoriam: Alpheus Weidner Reporting the passing of Brother Alpheus (Alf) Weidner of Venice Lodge No. 301, member of the Sahib Desert Patrol, Past Royal Patron of Venice Court and P.G.R.P. of Amaranth of Florida. He was also the husband to now deceased Lady Mae Weidner, long-time Oriental Guide for Sar-I Court and member of Nyla Temple. Masonic Service was held June 14 at Farley Funeral Home in Venice.

Hospital Transportation Notes Dick Schmidt, Chairman, hospital@sahibshrine.org Hospital Transportation operates solely on your donations. It is a 501(c)(3) charity which makes your contribution tax deductible. All money is spent locally on local patients. Hospital Transportation is the Sahib unit that has direct contact with the hospital and the hospital patients. The 300 or so patients a year that we transport from our four-county area have varying reasons why they need our assistance. They can have limited resources, be in locations that are remote for public transportation, not be familiar with the area, or simply not have valid licensing. Our Shriners Hospitals for Children specialize in child issues with a continuing increase in disciplines. We see the high profile advertising for funding, noting that the image is of Shriners helping patients. Our vans are rolling billboards telling our Sahib story. No matter whatever else we may do as

Shriners, our first mission is supporting the hospitals. That support comes in a few different packages: financial, public image and grass roots. Financial is an inflow of operating monies from fundraising activities; public image is being in community activities such as parades and having a visible presence showing who we are and what we do; and the grass roots is the patient transportation and delivering of donated goods. The Hospital Transportation drivers are highly aware of being criticized for any driving error they may make as the public is always watching. Courtesy and safe driving will always stand out by the public’s image of our Sahib vans. We had an interesting image issue when we first took delivery of the new 12passenger window van. The logo decorating had just been scheduled and was waiting for available time. There was a very rare double header trip scheduled from the Arcadia area. The new van was dispatched for the second trip. Upon arriving at the patient’s residence, the patient’s guardian was reluctant to get into a plain, unmarked vehicle. The driver and co-driver showed their Shrine ID’s and explained why the vehicle did not yet have the logos. The lady was wise to question the situation and our drivers handled it quite nicely. In this case the Sahib Shrine image had a “feel-safe” factor as well as for the service. Our computer system is starting to show some signs of life. The new IT company, Tek-Mate, is doing some serious security updating, changing our operating system to Windows 10 and upgrading hardware. It is human nature to take things for granted until all of a sudden they disappear, then it becomes a disaster. Pencil, paper and telephone still work okay, but then can get time consuming. We are probably a week or so from being up to full speed, but we are moving in that direction.

Motor Corps Shrine Club Giles Light (G-man), Secretary, gileslight@aol.com A July Reporter. This takes some getting used to. Your humble reporter has never prepared an article for a July Reporter. Moreover, he was always happy after submitting the June issue, knowing it would be two months until the August issue. But this year is different. In addition to an extra Reporter, there are no Bikerbilly Dinners beginning in July to report on. But I digress. Please read on. The Shrine Imperial Session is being held in Daytona Beach from July 15-19. Also meeting during this same time is the International Association of Shrine Motor Corps (IASMC) whose meetings begin on Saturday, July 14. Our own Hampton Crimi (Monk) is 4th Vice President of the Florida Association of Shrine Motor Corps (FASMC) and Ed Jordan is Executive Secretary/Treasurer. On Saturday, July 15, IASMC will be holding its competitions at Daytona International Speedway. In addition to the drill and slow race competitions, there will be an obstacle course competition. As of this date, we are not sure if any of our Sahib members will be competing. Included in the week’s activities is the Imperial Motor Cycle Ride on Monday, July 16. This is an Escorted Ride starting at Daytona’s Famous Motorcycle Attraction on Main Street, heading through Central Florida and finishing back at Main Street. Historically, there has also been a parade during the Shrine Imperial Session. The date for this year’s parade is Tuesday, July 17. As of the deadline date for the Reporter, details about the parade were unknown. If our members do participate in the parade, we’ll have more information next month. The Motor Corps has received a letter from Masonic Charities of Florida, Inc. for our $200 contribution to the Child I.D. program in the 23rd Masonic District. The Motor Corps has supported this project in the past and we are pleased we could make this

contribution to such a worthwhile project.

Before ending this month’s column, the Motor Corps wants to give you a heads-up on the Birthday & Anniversary Dinner Dance for August. The date is Tuesday, August 14. The theme is “Summertime Cruzin’.” Appropriate attire is summertime casual. That means no coat and tie. Recommended attire is Guayabera shirts and slacks for men; dressy casual commensurate attire for women. The music will be provided by Peter Mueller. Menu selections will be available next month. We will be having a 50-50 drawing and a Silent Auction. One unique item in the Silent Auction is an engraved bottle of Old Forester Bourbon which commemorates the name and date of the event. A sample picture accompanies this article. Finally, look for one of our white Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the lobby the night of the event.

Update: Sahib Shrine’s ‘Hometown Heroes Bar & Grill’ Noble Paul R. Zeissler, przcook2000@yahoo.com Hometown Heroes Bar & Grill, the four-monthold reincarnation of our Shrine bar and restaurant, is gaining stability, providing excellent food and finally starting to make a few dollars. Our new internationally-renowned executive chef, Darrell Mizell, says “Everyday I wake up and search in my mental culinary bag and try my best to pull out a wonderful and memorable dining experience that I can create for the nobles and other patrons of our new restaurant.” Mizell continued, “I am going to be introducing my special creations of a Fish Camp Friday with three types of fish and a Prime Rib Saturday in July to keep things moving in a growing direction.” Chef Mizell said he thinks he’s winning nobles and their families over to the new restaurant’s atmosphere and menu. “I love making my folks happy with their meals and their eating experience here,” he said. “The best thing about this job is having people enjoy my food. I try to keep the menu upbeat and full of fun.” Mizell said he is hearing many great comments and compliments from the nobles who have enjoyed his food at Hometown Heroes. In order to increase the growth in good feelings about his food, Chef Mizell said, “I am introducing smaller portions at lunch. Too many people weren’t able to finish their meals. I think they should. I am adding a bacon-cheddar burrito and a soup and half burger dish that I think the nobles and their ladies will really like.” Noble Ed Firquin, Sahib Reporter, noted “We’re

Meet your hostess, Nora Fernandez Hometown Heroes Bar & Grill hostess Nora Fernandez greets visitors with a smile to the Sahib restaurant in the front lobby. Manatee Shrine Club Paul Kline, President, pauliek23@gmail.com While our club is “dark” for the month of July, and will remain “dark” through August, it merely conveys the message that we are not having any luncheon meetings and likely no social events. Nonetheless, the lull in activity provides us with an opportunity to share with readers of The Reporter some of our previously unreported moments over the past several months. Our recent trip to Tampa for a tour of the International Shriner Headquarters was incredibly impressive and we returned to our homes on the Sun Coast feeling tremendously prideful. Prideful for being part of such an outstanding organization, and prideful for being a part of supporting hospitals that are very special—and successful—in achieving their mission. From an historical perspective, the Shriners were established in 1870 and as we all know is an appendant body to Free Masonry. brotherly love, relief, and truth. Today there are approximately 350,000 members from 196 temples in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, Bolivia, Mexico, the Republic of Panama, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Europe, and Australia. We are most likely best known to the masses for our Shriners Hospitals for Children, the circuses that we sponsor, and the fezzes that our members wear. We are all so proud of the extraordinary Shriner tradition, from being a part of it, to looking forward each year to enriching it.

The restaurant has been refurbished and the menu has been enhanced. Come out and see what you have been missing. Join us in making this a better world to live in.

An Account of Past Masters’ Visit to Liberty Lodge Noble Al Dahlberg, adahlberg4@aol.com On Saturday, June 9, the Past Masters unit of the Sahib Shrine paid an official visit to Liberty Lodge No. 412 in Bradenton, Florida. Following the opening of the Lodge, reading of the past meeting minutes, recognition of visitors, and treasurer’s report, Worshipful Master Mark Mason recognized the Past Masters unit of the Sahib Shrine and thanked them for attending the first anniversary meeting of Liberty Lodge. Worshipful Mason acknowledged that Most Worshipful Stanley Hudson and Right Worshipful Albert Dahlberg were very instrumental in establishing Liberty Lodge as a Daylight Lodge, originally under Dispensation. Right Worshipful Dahlberg addressed Worshipful Master Mason and the Craft, and explained that the Past Masters unit was pleased to be in attendance at their first anniversary meeting. He also mentioned that the Past Masters unit attempts to visit several lodges within the district every year and provide any assistance that a lodge may need or request. Right Worshipful Dahlberg also mentioned that any Past Master may become a member of the Past Masters unit, however, he must first become a member of the Sahib Shrine. The Past Masters unit is actively

Masonic Digest / Scottish Rite Casey A. Fletcher, 32° KCCH, cfletcher@palletone.com The Scottish Rite confers twenty-nine degrees, the 4th through the 32nd. They originate from old French Masonic rituals probably birthed in the 17th and 18th centuries. Rewritten by Illustrious Albert Pike, 33° in the 1850s, the degrees have been updated and revised over the years into their modern state. The three degrees of the “Blue Lodge” fall within the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge system, so the Rite does not confer them. However, the Rite does possess its own introductory degrees, referred to as the “Red Lodge” degrees; they are worthy of investigation and study. Albert Pike

Among the objectives of the Rite is the continual self-development and education of the individual Brother. The Rite is classed into four bodies, each with its own particular emphasis. The Lodge of Perfection includes the 4th through the 14th degrees. They tell a more expansive version of the Hiramic Legend simply because the Rite’s Third Degree has a different narrative than the Blue Lodge’s. These degrees portray events occurring subsequent to the Third Degree and deal differently with the Ruffians. Additional characters are introduced into our story line and their roles developed to good effect. These degrees espouse lessons of morality and virtue for the individual and society. While ostensibly they simply tell a longer or more expansive legend than the Third Degree, their subject and focus continues the persona of individual character development.

Ultimately, their theme might be described as encouragement to “know thyself.” The Chapter of Rose Croix includes the 15th through 18th degrees. Its work redirects our attention outward, toward living rightly and justly, charitably conducting ourselves with our fellow men and searching for knowledge or a fuller awareness of Deity. These degrees are at once religious, moral and philosophical. The Council of Kadosh includes the 19th through 30th degrees. The Council is composed of the knightly or chivalric degrees—but each is intensely mystical and symbolic. The 29th Degree, Scottish Knight of St. Andrew, depicts one of the founding legends of Freemasonry. The 31st and 32nd Degree comprise the fourth body, the Consistory. The former degree returns our attention to the selfexamination and self-reflection inculcated in the Lodge of Perfection. It is a powerful degree, reminding us that the path to immortality is more than the mere outward appearance of piety. The 32nd Degree culminates with the exploration of the Royal Secret and the Holy Doctrine. The Scottish Rite meets at its Center in Tampa on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Prior to our July 9 meeting, the 13th Degree, Royal Arch of Solomon, will be conferred at 6:10 p.m. Dinner is at 5:45 p.m. Your writer will present an educational program reviewing the 13th Degree during the meeting. The Scottish Rite’s degrees will next be conferred October 20 and October 27. Petitions are available online by clicking this link: http://tampascottishrite.org The writer is the Worshipful Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNA Kay Neary, High Priestess, kayneary@hotmail.com Hawaii was wonderful! There were ten of the Sar-I Court #79 Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America in Hawaii for the Grand Council. We had a great time enjoying the beauty and fun activities the island has to offer. It was wonderful to meet old friends and make new ones; and attend meetings and exchange ideas. Those attending were Annette Lesser PGHP, PC Maybray PGHP, Joyce Goacher

July: from a poem by Boris Pasternak July, who scatters from his pockets The fluff of blow-balls in a cloud Who enters through the open window, Who chatters to himself aloud,

Unkempt, untidy, absent-minded, Soaked through with smell of dill and rye, With linden-blossom, grass and beet-leaves, The meadow-scented month July.
