Notes from your Divan

Potentate’s Message Greetings Nobles, ATTENTION: We WILL be open the month of July, and remember to look for the July Reporter. There will also be a Birthday-Anniversary Dinner Dance sponsored by the Past Potentate Ladies and Divan Ladies. Hope to see you all there. The year is approaching the halfway point, but our work is just beginning. Getting through the summer months is always challenging without our vacationers and snowbirds. It is up to each of us to help build the future of Sahib temple. Each of us has special talents that can be put to work for Sahib. WE can no longer leave the future of Sahib up to the other guy. WE all must do our part. WE need new members to secure our future. WE need to support our units and clubs. WE need to support Sahib by attending temple events. WE all need to work together for the betterment of Sahib temple. We have hard-working and loyal Shriners here at Sahib. We must do our very best to support our temple. All suggestions are welcome and will be taken seriously. We are approaching the slow season: the summer months are just around the corner. We would ask you kindly that as you consider places to go and enjoy a night out that you come to Sahib. We have a fine restaurant and lounge that may be enjoyable to you, and you may see some friends that you haven’t seen for a while. Come and have fun. We need you to help Sahib maintain our facility. As we prepare for the Imperial Session in Daytona, Florida, we need to remember our purpose: the care and treatment of children. I wish all of our nobles and ladies a healthy and prosperous summer. Enjoy! Proud to serve the nobility of Sahib Shriners! Remember, be kind to one another. Yours faithfully,

Delbert Rawlinson Sahib Shriners Potentate 2018

July at Sahib: Yes, We’re Open for Business Going “dark” in July? Not by a long shot. Sure, there will be fewer nobles in Sarasota as our flocks of snowbirds take flight for cooler climes, but things are cookin’ at Sahib nevertheless. Speaking of cooking, have you enjoyed a meal yet at Sahib’s restaurant, Hometown Heroes Bar and Grill? Chef Mizell’s creations are spectacular. Expertly prepared, seasoned and presented. You owe it to yourself to give your restaurant a try. Another way to experience Sahib’s fantastic food in July is by attending a bonus BirthdayAnniversary Dinner Dance! It will be sponsored by the Past Potentate and Divan ladies. Details are being worked out, but the theme will be “Western.” So put on your best duds and pony up for some tickets ‘cause it’s promising to be a real humdinger! Call the box office at 366-4449 x320. By the way, check out the Recorder’s Report on this page. Membership is up by three! That’s not a lot, but it’s a start. Keep up the good work.

A Message from Imperial Sir Gary Bergenske Originally published May 13, 2018 on https://www.facebook.com/Shriners-Imperial-2018 Dear Fellow Nobles, I hope everyone has been having a wonderful and productive year thus far. It is hard to believe it is already May, and we are only a couple months away from Imperial Session. This is a great time to take a step back and re-evaluate our individual commitments to our organizations and determine how we can strengthen our efforts. Winter is now (hopefully) behind many of us, and Spring is finally here in the northern hemisphere. Spring represents many things, including rebirth, rejuvenation and renewal. I think we can take this time to do the same in our own personal lives—to make a point to be the best version of ourselves, and recommit to our cause—our fraternity, philanthropy and the children we provide care for. I am truly grateful for all of our Shriners, and each of your efforts on behalf of Shriners Hospitals for Children. The work you all do every day makes such a positive difference in the world around us. In order to be able to do what we do best—provide hope and healing to those who need us—we need to continue to work toward strengthening our fraternity, so that we can continue to support our philanthropy. Our future, and the future of so many children and families, directly depends on your commitment and support. We must keep supporting our membership efforts by referring good men around us through the I AM (Committed Now) R U program, and always be on the lookout for ways to build up the fraternity. We need to keep working together to make the world a better place, and commit to doing absolutely everything we can to ensure the success of our

amazing fraternity. The strength of our organization depends on all of us, and it is up to us to make certain our treasured tradition of brotherhood, fellowship and service to others continues for many years to come. Thank you for all your hard work on behalf of our Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Your dedicated efforts help make a meaningful difference in the lives of countless children and families around the world—we could not do it without you. With best wishes and warm regards, Gary J. Chief Rabban’s Notes Bruce Porter, Chief Rabban, bruceporter@hotmail.com We have new Masons, and those who have been members for many years. With the large number of non-Masons coming into the Sahib Shrine Center, I am frequently asked “What are Masons, and how do I become one?” In our lobby is a rack containing Masonic information. As a brief summary: “Freemasonry (or Masonry) is dedicated to the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God. It is designed to build character and moral values in its members. Its singular purpose is to make good men better. “Masonry teaches that each person, through self-improvement and helping others, has an obligation to make a difference for good in the world. “The Freemasons of North America contribute over two million dollars a day to charitable causes. Much of that assistance goes to people who are not Masons. “The Shrine Masons (Shriners) operate

the largest network of hospitals for burned and orthopaedically impaired children, and there is never a fee for treatment. “Freemasonry seeks no advantages for its members through business or politics. Masons are men of good character who strive to improve themselves and make the world a better place.” Incidentally, our office has applications for all of the Blue Lodges in our area.

Birthday & Anniversary Dinner Dance

May 8, 2018

The May Birthday and Anniversary Dinner Dance was sponsored by the Oriental Band on May 8. Dinner was delightful, the music was grand, and well…just look at these photos to see how much fun everyone had! The birthday prize was won by Lady Barbarann Cordova. Lady Jackie and Noble Ron Conner won the anniversary prize, and Noble Bill Batten won the 50-50 drawing. Thanks to Noble Charley Hamilton for the photos.

The Greeters had our annual potluck “picnic” at Oakwood Manor on April 14th. It was attended by many of the members shown here, as well as the Greeterettes. Once a thriving unit of our temple, the Greeters are currently encouraging Nobles to join our thinning ranks. There is an orange shirt waiting for those willing to welcome all comers to Shrine events and special occasions. Contact me when you decide to join us!

Chaplain’s Notes Lou Ortt, PM, Chaplain, lhortt@verizon.net Genesis 1:1—In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Darkness was upon the face of the deep, and God said, “Let there be Light.” This thought is especially meaningful as we celebrate the longest daylight of the year. How many times in our lives do we experience light coming to us following a period of darkness? We encounter this each morning as we rise and the start of a new day lifts our spirits as we begin our tasks. How many other times can you recall the light coming to you? In today’s world we seem to be directed by the clock with precision and predictability. The summer season is a time in which we play hard and spend many hours in the extended light. Throughout our lives there are many examples of light coming to us. I remember one where in an advanced math course I spent almost the entire first semester in total darkness and then, near the end of the course, it all came to me like someone flipped a switch. How many times have you been lost

and suddenly you saw something you recognized and the light came on? In our fraternity how many times have you been in darkness only to have the light come on and your eyes beheld those things which will inspire you to a fuller and richer life? Let us remember that the spirit encourages us to yearn for the guiding light of his creating and to scare away every darkness.

Hospital Transportation Notes Dick Schmidt, Chairman, hospital@sahibshrine.org Hospital Transportation has experienced a major problem. Our computer information base, as part of the Sahib network system, SahibShrine.org, has been hacked and locked for a ransom payment. Our systems, Hospital@SahibShrine.org and Transport@SahibShrine.org are our main communication lines with the drivers, Imperial, out-of-town hospitals, airlines, patients with emails, vendors and certain Tampa Hospital departments. The fax and phone service were not affected.

If and when the computer is unlocked, it is doubtful all of the information will be retained. We are expecting to have to do a significant amount of work trying to rebuild a working content. At this point in time, backup files are not available. We are able to retrieve some of the basic information forms and working structure that was in a remote location and not directly connected to the hack. There will be a lot of man hours restoring information. There has to be decisions made as to how the system will be reactivated, when that will happen, what new hardware/software is

needed and how to deal with the cost. Until these decisions are made and acted upon, Hospital Transportation is operating “caveman style,” with pencil, paper and telephones. Using personal computers does help, but doesn’t store our data and makes us run back and forth from the Shrine to home and home to Shrine as the incoming data is available, then sent back out to the drivers. The patients will still get to their appointments, and the drivers will still be the ones taking them. If you, as a Sahib Noble in good standing with a safe driving record, would like to participate in working directly with the kids by being a driver, contact the HT office. Office hours are Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and the office phone is (941) 366-4449, ext. 317.

Your humble reporter is used to checking last year’s Motor Corps column before beginning the current month’s column. However, when I went to check out what I had written last June, I quickly realized there was no June Reporter last year. Not only that, there hasn’t been a July Reporter for as long as I can remember. This year is different. Not only will there be a June Reporter which you are now reading, but there will also be a July Reporter. Hope I can come up with news from the Motor Corps for both issues. So let’s begin. Perhaps the most important news from the Motor Corps was our participation in the Florida Association of Shrine Motor Corps (FASMC) convention the first weekend in May. Seven of our members attended, including: Darren Bracken (Schmoozer),

Dave Mashia (Hollywood), Barry Hart (Policyman), Rich Robbins (Big Dawg), John Hubbard (Hot Rod), Hampton Crimi (Monk), and George Hernandez (Silver Fox). John Hubbard is a Past President of FASMC and Hampton Crimi is the current Fourth Vice President. We participated in the Obstacle Course competition. Unfortunately, we did not win a blue ribbon, but we came in close. Be warned, we are already getting ready for next year! Our annual Spring trip to Murphy, North Motor Corps continued page 17

Carolina was canceled this year. One of our members, Al Dahlberg (Big Al) and Lady Jan were there, but they were the only ones. Maybe next year, or better yet, a possibility of a Fall trip is still in the cards. As we reported in last month’s Reporter, there will be no Bikerbilly dinners this summer. Too bad, because we always enjoyed our six-to-seven week stint relieving the Hillbillies and serving up our special appetizers and meals. We haven’t completely given up on serving a meal to our fellow nobles and friends this year. We have tentative plans for a fish fry in November, so stay tuned. At our Motor Corps meeting in May, one of our members was elevated to emeritus status. Long-time member, Gary Nichols (Stumpy) joined our ranks as an emeritus member after selling his bike. We can also report that one of our former members, Gerry Hall (Pianoman) was in town from New Jersey and paid a visit to our meeting. Many of you will recall that Gerry rode a white Harley trike and was the leapfrog in our parade maneuvers. Glad to see Gerry and hope he returns again.

One of our members, Roger King (Tri-King) and Past Potentate Bill Balkwill, are putting together a bus trip to the Rays baseball game on June 24 versus the New York Yankees. Game tickets and bus ride cost $60. If interested, see Roger or Bill. One last item the Motor Corps would like you to add to your calendar. We are hosting the Birthday and Anniversary Dinner Dance on August 14. As in the past, the dress will be “dressy casual” (no coat and tie). We’ll add more details, including our theme, next month, so stay tuned. We have three Motor Corps members and their ladies with birthdays in June. These include First Lady Juanita Rawlinson on the 5th, and Suzy Lucas (Cream Cheese) on the 9th, plus Gina Bracken (GS) on the 25th. We also have two members and their ladies with anniversaries in June. Jim McKinney (Slim Jim) and Jennifer on the 20th, and Wally Lacey (Red Dog) and Lady Connie (Cooter) on the 30th.

Paul Kline, President, pauliek23@gmail.com First and foremost, despite rumors to the contrary, MSC will go “DARK” during the months of June, July, and August. We will not meet again until Friday, September 7, “same time, same place”—Peridia Country Club at 12:00 p.m. Hopefully members know how much we look forward to seeing them again following a three-month summer recess. Our May social was a tour of Pirate City, winter home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was a very interesting, informative, and enjoyable occasion and we are thankful to our friend (and soon to be Brother) Mr. Chuck Knapp for hosting the event. Just a reminder: from time-to-time throughout the summer, volunteer opportunities will be available to us via the Bradenton Marauders. For fundraising purposes in benefit to MSC (and this includes all clubs and units under the Sahib temple umbrella who wish to participate), and also to give our friend Chuck Knapp a hand, we hope you will consider participating. Speaking of “interesting, informative, and enjoyable,” another THANK YOU is extended to the guest speaker of our May luncheon-meeting program, Mr. Michael LoPresti. Mr. LoPresti is retired from a professional career in law enforcement and for 20 years prior to his retirement he conducted and interpreted lie detector tests, also known as the polygraph. His presentation further reinforced our tremendous appreciation for the efforts of the women and men in the field of law enforcement. Also at the May meeting, our MSC board of directors and membership informed Illustrious Sir Del Rawlinson that they had unanimously approved a gift of $5,000 to our Shrine temple. That gift, in general, was designated for the completion of the enhanced lighting project in the Sahib parking lot at an estimated total cost of $25,000. Further, MSC will make an

additional $5,000 gift after Sahib raises $15,000 from its other clubs and units. We are very thankful to be in a financial position to be so generous. In other May meeting business: Our treasurer, Tom McGill, announced that he is now positioned to sell MSC collared shirts. The charge per shirt will be $35.00, which includes an embroidered MSC logo and personalization (name of the member/purchaser). Tom also reminds that DUES are due! They are still $15.00 and still one of the best annual investments a Shriner can make. MSC’s board of directors and membership expressed its tremendous appreciation to Bob Ransford upon his resignation as our board’s secretary. Bob very nobly and excellently served in that position while “filling in” following its vacancy earlier this year. There is an on-going search for ways to expand and retain membership in our club, MSC continued page 21

with that goal in mind, all suggestions are welcome…please share yours. Again, we greatly look forward to seeing our members when the MSC convenes in September. In the meantime, we extend our prayers of safety, good health, and happiness to all.

Awaiting your order: a new supply of MSC collared and embroidered shirts is now available. You can place your order by contacting our treasurer, Noble Tom McGill. Photo provided by Paul Kline.

Speakers Bureau / Thursday Lunch Harold Eady, Program Chairman, hjeady@comcast.net We have decided to cancel most of our guest speakers at Thursday Men’s Lunch for June, July and August. It has become increasingly difficult getting speakers during summer months. However, from time to time, when an interesting speaker becomes available during this period, they will be scheduled and as much notice possible will be distributed. Giles Light, who is part of our Speakers Bureau, has worked with me the last several years in arranging speakers for our Thursday Men’s Lunch, and has done a marvelous job. Giles also recently agreed to work with Paul Zeissler and myself on our Outreach Committee, which is also part of the Speakers Bureau. Giles is a very active Mason and will be very valuable in our efforts reaching out to Masons on becoming Shriners.

Clown Corner Harold “Scrappy” Bell, scrappysarasota@comcast.net It is June and the “ole” clowns have said goodbye for the summer to our northern residents and to those who get out of the heat for a few months. Yep, Al “Corny” Cobb is in North Carolina, James “Gabby” Cresap is in Ohio, and Ian “Checkers” Grant is in Canada. The “ole” reporter Harold “Scrappy” Bell is not leaving for the summer, but is planning to skip some of the heat by visiting some northern friends like “Corny” and “Scrappy’s” family in Indiana. However, the first trip will be for pleasure, to see a granddaughter graduate from high school and two years of college at the same time in Charleston, South Carolina on May 31. So everybody will not miss what the clown unit looks like, I am including a picture of the “motley” crew with their calliope with this article.

Last summer, some of the “heat birds” did some clown gigs at the local Sun and Fun. We will see if there is some interest in the unit and the resort to do a little weekend entertainment again. We might have to come up with a few new acts in case they have campers who were there last year. We had our last unit meeting on Monday, May 21 and we do plan to have the calliope and some clowns at the September 3 Englewood Pioneer Days Parade. I sure hope that it does not rain! The clowns will welcome all interested Shriners at their next unit meeting on August 20. Heck, we will welcome you to participate in the summer gigs! Also, there is NO CHARGE for training. As I close this Clown Corner, just remember, “it is our Shrine children for whom we are working.”

Past Masters Notes Gary Wonning, President, cmdr07@gmail.com The real Freemason is distinguished from the rest of mankind by uniform, unrestrained rectitude of his conduct. Other men are honest in the fear of the punishment which the law might inflict. They are religious in expectation of being rewarded, or in dread of the devil, in the next world. A Freemason would be just if there were no laws, human or divine, except those which are written in his heart by the finger of his Creator. In every climate, under every system of religion, he is the same. He kneels before the universal throne of God, in gratitude for the blessings he has received, and in humble solicitation for his future protection. He venerates the good men of all religions. He disturbs not the religion of others. He restrains his passions, because they cannot be indulged without injuring his neighbor or himself. Oriental Band Notes Robert E. Stihler, resnwk@aol.com The band would like to thank the nobility for their support of the May Birthday and Anniversary Dinner Dance. It appeared that all had an enjoyable evening. Music by the Mellotones brought back memories of yesteryear when “music was music.” Thanks also to band president/music director Floyd LaDue for an entertaining “half-time” show. And a BIG THANKS to Lady Gail Balkwill for all her efforts with the 50/50 drawing. Thanks to Paul (Greek) Pante, guest speaker at the May 17 men’s luncheon, for his reflections and comments about The Great Sahib Oriental Band. Hopefully, some of the nobility might become members and enjoy the band’s camaraderie and playing the best kind of music this side of Heaven. The band is in need of new members, so if you can count to four or tap your toe, contact President LaDue, The Greek, Yours Truly or any member of the band (I know you’ll look great in a Mandarin cap and your Chinese-themed uniform). As mentioned in the March issue of The Reporter, the band is forging ahead on the

formation of Tong #54’s Mandarin Degree Team. When ready, probably this Fall, the nobility will be notified as to when and where a degree will be offered for neophytes to “meet the Mandarin” and “gain further light in Masonry by incorporating ancient Oriental philosophies.” Remember that although the degree is presented by the Oriental Band, it is a fun degree open to ALL Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. God bless you. God bless our troops. God bless America. Yours in the Faith, Robert “Bob” Stihler

Masonic Digest / Scottish Rite Casey A. Fletcher, 32° KCCH, cfletcher@palletone.com Freemasonry introduces us to many wise men in history. Seldom, if ever, are their names found in our ritual. In the first three degrees, we hear the names Solomon, Pythagoras and Euclid. But the thoughts and teachings of many other ancient philosophers and teachers are present. For example, quite a bit of the EA and FC lectures might be traced to the writings of Aristotle. But his name is not mentioned. Neither is it mentioned in the Scottish Rite’s twenty-nine degrees, although Albert Pike references Aristotle’s writings in Morals and Dogma more than twenty times. More than one such reference is to Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics in which are described three kinds of friendship. The first Aristotle calls a “friendship of pleasure.” These friends are the men we enjoy doing something with, like fishing or hunting or sports. The relationship is based on the activity that is the object of our pleasure. These friendships can come and go based on those activities. We remember (and cherish) the many friendships of our youth, for example, those from playing sandlot baseball. But, alas, as the time for that activity faded, so might have the friendship. The second he recognizes as a “friendship of utility.” Each man has an ability or characteristic that complements the other’s. Each has something he receives and something he contributes. Friendships in a business or a community activity might be a good example. We become close to men because we have a common civic or economic goal. We need each other’s skills and abilities to achieve that goal. When the goal is achieved, the friendship may or may not continue. The third, and best kind, Aristotle identifies as a “friendship of excellence or character.” These are friendships in which the object is not a pleasurable activity or a mutual goal—the object of the relationship is

the other person. The friendship is based on the nature of the men. Such friendships, Aristotle asserts, develop only among men of virtue, moral fiber and goodwill. He notes that “a certain training in virtue [must arise] from the company of the good” men for such a friendship to develop. Each man must first be found trustworthy and loveable. “It is natural that such friendships should be infrequent.” But when these friendships develop, they endure. They endure because they formed from a state of moral character that is likewise enduring. “…Distance does not break off [this] friendship.” In Freemasonry, we have a name for such friends of excellence and character: Brother. Aristotle considered friendships of excellence or character to be essentially necessary to both a man’s happiness and to the orderly functioning of society. Perhaps our ancient brethren were influenced by his writings when they created our rituals. Think: friendship, morality and brotherly love. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the second Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:45 p.m. dinner. On June 11, the Valley will commemorate Flag Day. This is an open meeting and features a patriotic speaker. The 13th degree, Royal Arch of Solomon, will be conferred at the July 9 meeting at 6:10 p.m., and your writer will present an educational program at the meeting. The writer is the Worshipful Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. His summary of two chapters of “Nicomachean Ethics” has no doubt caused Aristotle to roll over in his grave. This essay was first published in the October 2014 magazine—if you remember it, thanks.

Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNA Kay Neary, High Priestess, kayneary@hotmail.com Summertime and the livin’ is easy… great song and yes, summertime is a time to relax a little bit, but it is also a time for planning. We do not have court during June, July and August, so that gives us time to do some wonderful activities like “Christmas in July.” We will be collecting toys, gift cards and cash at the Tuesday, July 24 bingo day at Sahib. Each year we have done more than the year before, so this year we have to really give it our best! We will take everything to the hospital on August 1. Seeing their faces when we bring in all those toys warms our hearts. We have been to Grand Council in Hawaii. Sharing ideas and having fun with our counterparts from all the states was wonderful. Each year, Grand Council is in a

different city. We have come back with renewed spirit and are looking forward to making our court even better than it is. If you know any lady who would be interested in joining us, please let one of us know. We would love to tell her about the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America and answer any question she might have. Have a wonderful summer!

Ladies’ Organizations of Shriners International From https://www.shrinersinternational.org/Shriners/Ladies/JustForLadies The Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America (also known as LOSNA) members are bound by their goal to promote sociability, good fellowship, and the betterment of all ladies connected with the organization. The Ladies actively support Shriners Hospitals for Children through a variety of fundraising activities, as well as by providing handmade quilts and surgery gowns, toys, games and books for patients. Ladies also participate in several Shrine events and may join special units with their court, or chapter, including bands, patrols, clowns or dance units. Like the Shriners, the LOSNA members wear a fez. The LOSNA fez is white with a red tassel and is worn for special events and ceremonies. Founded in West Virginia in 1903, LOSNA has more than 16,000 members across the United

States and donates more than $500,000 to Shriners each year. Daughters of the Nile was founded in 1913 and is open to ladies 18 years of age or older, who are related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, Master Mason, or Daughter of the Nile; or a Majority Member in Good Standing of a Masonic-related organization for girls; or who was a patient, with or without Shrine or Masonic relationship, at a Shriners Hospital for Children. With 24,000 members in 137 cities across the country, the Daughters of the Nile are devoted to supporting Shriners Hospitals for Children through a variety of fundraising activities. In fact, this dynamic group of women has donated more than $45 million dollars to the hospitals. Volunteers also sew quilts, dolls, surgery gowns and more for patients. Daughters of the Nile wear a distinctive crown for special events and ceremonies.

Noble Ed Cramer’s Drive to Help Shriners Children Noble James Edward Cramer quietly goes about his business as a driver for the Transportation Unit at Sahib Shrine. Ed doesn’t seek fanfare, he merely seeks to aid children by driving them to and from their appointments at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Enlisting the help of Ed’s wife, Lady Pat Cramer, we were able to obtain the photos at right, showing Ed holding a recognition pin from the hospital marking his 325th trip with (and for) the children. Noble Cramer is not alone on this quest. The Sahib Transportation Unit is composed of several members who, like Ed, strive to find time within busy lives to pick children up at their homes, drive them to Tampa, and patiently wait while the child sees their doctor, engages in therapy, is fitted with prosthetics, or even has surgery. Finally, the child is returned safely home again. All of this, of course, at no cost whatsoever to the child’s family. Lady Pat says “Ed truly enjoys the trips to the hospital with the kids.” Thank you, Ed.
