Chaplain’s corner by the Rev. Noble Don Kerr, Chaplain

F

ebruary is a month for many remembrances. There is the birthday of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington’s birthday. There is Valentine’s Day and Groundhog Day. It is also Black History month. Aside from all that, it is the shortest month of the year as well as the beginning of Lent. Celebrations and remembrances are always good for the soul. It seems sometimes as if patriotism has lost its appeal. The good old American spirit is seen as being too old-fashioned. Maybe it’s possible to become too super-patriotic but, at times we need to be inspired with some solid, genuine national loyalty. What’s wrong with being a loyal American? Why shouldn’t we lift up our heads and hands in gratitude and pride? Much the same thing could be said in the name of religion, which sometimes grows stale and unimaginative. Its familiarity can

create indifference. Every once in a while a good old-fashioned religious re-awakening stirs us out of our complacency. Conscience needs to be called to duty. Some say our moral fabric is quivering. Our roots are not as strong. Rationality and decency are at the mercy of the rebel and the disenfranchised. In answer to that, what is wrong with some kind of spiritual reawakening? What is so out of date for people to believe in some basic religious principles? Why not exert a little more honest obedience on our part and a little more sincere effort on our part to exercise an influence beyond our imagination? The time has come for all to say a good word in the name of God, remembering one of the commandments which says, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” That surely is one of the basic tenets of our Masonic creed.

T

he 2010 Reporter Profit and Loss Statement is a little better than last year. We had an $2,236 increase in outside advertising. Our total loss for the Reporter for this year was $16,429 ($2,505 less than 2009.) Our costs of production remained constant. Our postage went down $1,197, I don’t understand that one, but won’t look a gift horse in the mouth! Our Boosters contributed $1,490 in 2010 ($1,050 less than 2009)— thanks everyone for helping us fight this cost battle. There were also other advertising benefactors that helped keep our losses down, thanks to them as well. I don’t think any units or clubs received commissions by getting ads for the Reporter (don’t forget, there can be a 25% commission for first year ads to your unit or club.) We don’t expect members to go out and solicit advertising, just stay alert for possibilities. Give prospec-

tive advertisers a Reporter and the Reporter brochure (available in the office and on the Website <http:// sahibshrine.org/reporter/>.) I lamented that our membership had dropped below 1,700 in 2008, this year we ended up with 1,553! Our losses from The Black Camel were less that in 2009. Bahia Shriners Paper Crusade Bahia Shriners collected $438,000 during their 2010 hospital days effort. Their top unit collected $139,000 and their top club collected $39,000—Wow! That one club's total was more than the total collected by all at Sahib in 2010. They have 2,267 members, Sahib has 1,602 (just 665 members difference.) In their magazine, Bahia states, “The Paper Crusade is a year around program with a two-fold purpose: (1) To inform the public . . .continued on page 38

Potentate’s Notes

Nobles, I cannot believe that January passed in a flash. We are into our busiest time of the season, and are really enjoying representing Sahib at so many functions. This is the month of Sahib’s Ball—the first of all the balls in Florida, then onto Egypt’s Ball which also includes the Tampa Hospital for Children Benefit Days the same weekend, and of course our own Banjo Band performance. The wealth of our temple certainly lies in the talent of our nobles. We are also having Hospital Days this month and need to rebound from a small collection last year. We really need all the help you can give. Our Birthday/Anniversary dinner dance this month should bring all our sweethearts together, and another few to take your lady to include the Motor Corps Spaghetti Dinner, a Friday Pub Night, the Big Band dance also resumes, and for the nobles, our Canada Day luncheon. Your Divan works hard to please all the nobles because we are family, so if there are any comments or ideas you would like to share with us, please let us know what you think. Some changes in the restaurant and lounge have been made by the hard work of very dedicated people. Please visit for lunch or dinner and let us know what you think. Remember ‘membership’ and bring a friend to lunch or a special event; they may join us by becoming Masons, then Shriners. To have a friend, be a friend. “Friends become brothers at Sahib!”

Yours in the Faith,

Tom Millaway, Potentate

I

want to wish the entire Nobility a very happy and prosperous New Year. Sahib temple is now positioned for the future. Our building and our operating trusts have been well invested and are growing. We created 27 new nobles in 2010 and received the Silver Award from Imperial for our efforts. Unfortunately we suspended 76 nobles for non-payment of 2010 dues. Our total loss for 2010 (including 59 Black

Camels) is 93. Therefore, we will begin 2011 with a total of 1,546 members. This number includes Associates. We have all heard the plea for new nobles. Again, we ask you all to make this one of your 2011 goals. We need every Sahib noble’s help. Make this, YOUR GOAL, and we will see membership increase.

Chief Rabban’s notes by Charles M. Levan, 33°, cmlevan99@aol.com

ime flies when you are having fun. The whirlwind of installations is history. Now it is time for Potentates’ Balls, Hospital Days, Baseball and next month the County Fair/ There is always something to do. Monday night Bar Bingo continues to grow and what a lot of fun we have. Come out and join the fun.

Membership continues to be a concern for everyone in Masonry. So it is at Sahib Shriners. Our ceremonial is in August, but now is the time to ask one or two of your Masonic brothers to join in the fun we all enjoy at Sahib. Better yet ask someone to join the Masons.

n December of 2008, I enlisted as an infantryman Georgia for several days to make sure I was healthy in the United States Army for a contract of six enough to release. After the few days I spent in years. Unfortunately, I was not scheduled to go to Georgia (which seemed to be an entire year over), I basic training until July the next year. After four returned home to my mother, father, brother, sister, months of training, I was finally released from Fort . . .continued on page 38 Benning, Georgia. While at Fort Benning I completed basic combat, infantryman, and mortar training. Not long after returning home from basic training, I found out that my unit had a deployment in the near future. I decided to go with my unit on their mission oversea instead of attending school. The very month after I returned from basic training was spent preparing for this deployment that was scheduled to start in January 2010. Texas would be where we finished our training before we started our journey overseas. From January to December of 2010, we spent our time running sustainment missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom which is now named Operation New Editor Dawn. Our mission was to escort personnel Proud grandparents Asst. Rabban Bill Zurlo and Lady Stacey Lee with their and supplies into and out of Iraq. In the grandson Erik M. Meetings 1st Thursday of each Month at Sahib Shrine

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

SAHIB REPORTER Board Members ............ Cliff Bloodsworth Bill Schultz Secretary/Treasurer ..... Clint Van Tassell At our Christmas party, we had previously honored Clint and his service to our club with the following award: “This certificate of appreciation is awarded by the North Port Shrine Club under jurisdiction of Sahib Shriners to Clinton Van Tassell. In grateful recognition of the devoted services rendered, your fellow nobles have selected you the 2010 North Port Shriner of the Year.” We also salute Past President Noble Jim Macdonald for going the extra mile, both figuratively and literally, in true Shriner spirit. On the Friday before our Installation Mixer, Jim filled our club trailer with 15 powered and manual wheelchairs plus innumerable walkers, crutches and canes that had been collected by the North Port VFW. Then, driving the Sahib bus with children patients to Tampa, he pulled the trailer behind to donate the appliances to our Shriners Hospital for Children! Each Tuesday 7:30 a.m. rain or shine, 52 weeks of the year, we breakfast at the Olde World Restaurant in North Port for info, fun and fellowship. We invite any Masons, Shriners and their families to join us for some friendly banter, and civic projects. And please continue to bring your old magazines with blackened or cut out address labels to our Tuesday breakfasts for Noble John Brophy and his gang to contribute to medical waiting rooms and fire stations.

Sickness and distress: The Black Camel has come for Life Member Noble Oliver Kortjohn and a donation in his name will be made to the Shriners Hospital. Lady Martha Cannon is recovering from injuries suffered in a fall. Please offer support to these families and keep them in your thoughts and prayers. In addition, as we go to press, no reader identified filmmaker Michael Moore as our January Quotable Notable who recently wrote in Time magazine: “What (outgoing eight-year President) Lula wants for Brazil is what we used to call the American Dream. We in the U.S., by contrast, where the richest one percent now own more financial wealth than the bottom 95% combined, are living in a society that is fast becoming more like Brazil.” So here’s our February quiz: What conservative newspaper columnist recently wrote the following about the WikiLeaks? “The quality of (diplomatic) conversation is damaged by exposure, just as our relationships with our neighbors would be damaged if every private assessment were brought to the light of day. We’ve seen what happens when conversations deteriorate (look at the U.S. Congress), and it’s ugly.” The first reader to send the correct answer to the above email address wins a free Tuesday morning breakfast for two with the North Port Shrine Club. January Reporter Correction: At our Olde World November Mixer, Lady Marsha Cohen baked the cake for Noble Jack and Lady Matty Watson’s wedding anniversary.

he LOH officers and nobles would like to remind all Sahib nobles that February contains Valentines Day on February 14. Be sure to take your lady out to dinner or give her a gift of some type. Remember the old adage: “If Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” The military takes care of it’s own in many different ways. For instance the North Koreans had previously helped recover the remains of USAF pilot 1LT Robert F. Dees, shot down over N. Korea during that war on October 9, 1952. His remains had previously been buried as “unidentifiable,” but new DNA tests taken after his body was exhumed proved to whom the remains belonged. He will be reburied with full military honors when the remains are returned. The five joint military services have come a long, long way in their thinking of the role of women in a combat zone; and how they should be deployed. For

instance: for you salt-water sailors the USN will take on board submarines in 2011 their first female officers and enlisted. Yes, all latrines are now “joint usage.” Army LT Phoebe Jeter was commanding an all male Patriot Missile Battery of Scudbusters on January 21, 1991 in Iraq when they fired off 13 missiles and destroyed at least two Scuds. She is now called the first female “Scudbuster.” Thirteen women died in the Gulf wars. Six of the 13 were killed in action. Another 22 have all received the Purple Heart for being wounded in action. The military times are surely changing. Even West Point has had for several years now a blind US Army Major (newly promoted) teaching military tactics. Keep in Touch! If you don’t stand behind our troops, please, feel free to stand in front of them.

appy Valentine’s Day to everyone! Saint Valentine, Holy Priest of Rome: The date of this Saint Valentine’s birth is not known. Along with Saint Marius and his family, Saint Valentine assisted the martyrs during the persecution they suffered under the rule of Claudius II (also known as Claudius the Goth and Claudius the Cruel). In addition, since Rome was at the time involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns, the emperor found it difficult

to recruit the male populace into joining his military leagues. Believing this to be because Roman men were averse to leaving their loved ones or their families, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements within the City of Rome. Saint Valentine and Saint Marius, however, continued to perform wedding ceremonies in secret. When it was discovered that Saint Valentine was defying the emperor’s decree, he was apprehended and dispatched by Claudius

SAHIB REPORTER to the Prefect of Rome who, being unable to force the saint to renounce Christianity, ordered that Valentine be clubbed, stoned and then beheaded. According to tradition, while Valentine waited in prison for his execution, he corresponded with those under his care by sending letters and love notes to his parishioners. It is also believed that while incarcerated, the Bishop fell in love with a young woman who visited him during his confinement. According to some sources, this was the blind daughter (whose name may have been Julia) of Asterius, the jailer. It is said that God enabled Valentine to miraculously restore the girl’s sight. Popular belief indicates that Valentine’s farewell message to his love contained a closing that has now transcended time: “From Your Valentine.” The saint was executed on February 14 in either 269 A.D. or 270 A.D. In 270 A.D., Pope Julius I is said to have built a church near Ponte Mole in the saint’s memory at a location once known as Porta Valentini and now called Porta del Popolo. The relic bones of this Saint Valentine, who may also have been a physician, are now housed within the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome. Saint Valentine’s Day or Valentine’s Day is a saint’s day commemorating Saint Valentine on February 14. It is the traditional day on which lovers express their love for each other; sending Valentine’s cards, donating to a charity or getting candy. It is very common to present flowers on Valentine’s Day. The holiday is named after two men, both Christian

martyrs among the numerous early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The day became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. The day is most closely associated with the mutual exchange of lover notes in the form of “valentines.” Modern Valentine symbols include the heart shaped outline and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten notes have largely given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The mid-nineteenth century Valentine’s Day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the United States to follow. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately one billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas. After Spinal Cord Injury, Brittany is Walking and Dancing Again Brittany Fojtik was a dancer in peak physical condition when a car accident left her with a spinal cord injury (SCI). Doctors told her that she was paralyzed from the chest down and would never walk again. The tenacious young girl, then 10 years old, set out to prove them wrong. The dedication and drive that helped Brittany succeed as a dancer was directed toward making a full recovery. She devoted many long hours to therapy at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago and just two years after her injury, not only is she walking – she is dancing again. On Nov. 2, 2008, Brittany was en route to her family’s new home in Katy, Texas. Brittany and her brother, Daniel, sat in the middle seat of their minivan as their father drove. While the van was moving, Brittney unbuckled her seat belt to grab an item from the back.

A sudden and unexpected turn of the wheel caused the van to hit a concrete drainage culvert. The vehicle flipped through the air and Brittany was ejected from the car out the back window; she flew 60 feet and landed on the pavement. The next thing Brittany remembers is a man telling her “everything is going to be OK.” She was surrounded by sirens, ambulances and paramedics before being airlifted to a hospital in nearby Houston. Her mother, Beverly Fojtik, was told she may not make it through the flight. In addition to her SCI, Brittany sustained a broken arm, hip, wrist, nose and ribs, and massive internal bleeding. After spinal fusion surgery, Brittany spent 18 days in the intensive care unit while her vital signs stabilized. As Brittany’s condition continued to improve, it became clear that she would need rehabilitation at a facility that specialized in pediatric SCI. A therapist recommended Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago to the family and on Dec. 1, 2008, a transport team relocated her to the Windy City. Brittany worked with physical and occupational therapists at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago for two-and-a-half weeks in early December. Examinations during this admission indicated that she had sustained a complete SCI (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale A), meaning she had very little chance of walking again. Despite the dim prognosis, Brittany’s progress continued. The day before she left to go home for the Christmas holidays, she discovered that she could move one of her big toes. “It all started happening so fast,” explained Beverly. “When we got home the next day, she was able to swing her leg from side to side. From then on,

there was some kind of new movement all the time.” Brittany returned to Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago in mid-January 2009 for a month-long stay. Her therapists began standing her up and she was able to move her hips a little bit. With the help of leg braces and therapists, Brittany took her first five steps since the accident on Feb. 11, 2009. “I cried and cried and cried,” Beverly said. “And I wasn’t the only one – the nurses and therapists were crying too. Nobody expected this.” Brittany’s injury was reclassified as an American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale D, which means that she has an incomplete SCI and significant recovery is expected. Since she began rehabilitation, she has progressed from a wheelchair to a walker to forearm crutches. She now walks with a cane and only uses her wheelchair at the mall and the airport. The level of recovery and return of function that Brittany experienced is unusual and was a wonderful surprise and outcome for both the SCI team that worked with her and her family. Doctors noted a number of factors that contributed to her success, including her physical condition prior to the injury, a positive personality and a lot of hard work. Brittany is now back on the dance floor and has taken up Pilates to help regain her strength. In addition to keeping up with school, she is participating in choir and a school play and plans to compete in the Texas Cinderella Scholarship Program Pageant. Her experience at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Chicago has inspired her to become a physical therapist when she grows up. www.shrinershospitals.org OSQ210ASCI

Healthy Bones, Healthy Bodies: Building Bones for Life

Shriners Hospitals for Children® Promotes Healthy Habits for Strong Bones during National Bone and Joint Action Week 2010 While osteoporosis most typically affects people over age 50, the best defense against it begins during childhood. In the U.S. today, 10 million people have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, a condition characterized by decreased bone mass and density, causing a high risk for fractures. An additional 34 million individuals have been identified as having low bone mass, a risk factor for the disease. Osteoporosis is the cause of more than 1 million bone fractures each year, including: • 700,000 spine fractures • 300,000 hip fractures • 250,000 wrist fractures Bone mass (the amount of bone tissue in the skeleton) accumulated during childhood and adolescence is an important factor in lifelong bone health. As much as 90 percent of a person’s peak bone mass is established by age 18 for girls and age 20 for boys. Clearly, it is essential that we do everything we can to be sure children learn healthy habits to build bone mass for life. As a leader in pediatric orthopaedic care, Shriners Hospitals for Children® is deeply concerned and committed to stressing the importance of helping children develop healthy habits, especially for their bones and joints. It is equally important to instill these habits in children who are non-ambulatory, as they are already at increased risk for osteoporosis as adults. One of the most important nutrients affecting bone health is calcium, which the body does not produce and must be obtained through foods. While this is fairly common knowledge,

given the statistics on the incidence of osteoporosis, the information bears repeating as often as possible. In addition to strengthening bones, calcium helps the heart, muscles and nerves to work correctly, and is important to dental health. In general, three servings of foods containing calcium each day will provide the amount needed. However, government studies indicate calcium is one of the nutrients most likely to be missing or lacking from the American diet. Nearly nine of 10 women and eight of 10 men are not getting enough calcium. Healthy bones also need vitamin D, as well as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and protein to increase bone mineral content and density. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. Without enough vitamin D, the body must take calcium from the skeleton, weakening existing bone and preventing the formation of new, strong bone material. Vitamin D can be obtained from foods, exposure to the sun and from supplements. Foods containing vitamin D include fortified milk, egg yolks, some kinds of fish and liver. In addition to proper nutrition, exercise is important for bone health. Weight-bearing activities, such as walking, running and jumping rope, help strengthen bones and improve bone mass. It is important that children and adolescents are encouraged to participate in an appropriate exercise program. As a health care system that offers expert pediatric orthopaedic care, Shriners Hospitals for Children® is encouraging and emphasizing healthy habits for

bones during National Bone and Joint Action Week, Oct. 12-20, as well as providing nutrition tips for bone health. The 19 Shriners Hospitals for Children® specializing in orthopaedics can provide expert information and resources on these and several other pediatric orthopaedic concerns. National Bone and Joint Action Week is an extension of Bone and Joint Decade, which continues through 2011. The Decade is supported by many organizations; several, like Shriners Hospitals for Children®, emphasize pediatrics. During National Bone and Joint Action Week, these organizations, including the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and the American Academy of Pediatrics, will make a concerted effort to increase public understanding and awareness of musculoskeletal health issues. ell, the end of December and beginning of January were the Blue Lodge installations of the 27th district, our district of lodges. If you attended any of these installations, you were treated to some great work and even a few good laughs. I personally made all that I could that my Sahib schedule would allow. I want to congratulate all the new Blue Lodge officers and tell them that if there is anything I can do for newly appointed officers, please feel free to contact me. We must remember that our lodges are the pillar of our Shrine. We need to think about helping our Masonic lodges by bringing in good men so they may share the great feeling that comes with being a Mason. When they see the way everyone works together, they won’t hesitate in wanting to become a

Shriner. And let’s not forget the good times they will have here at Sahib. I know the staff is working very hard to put great shows, food and good times together for our enjoyment this coming year. So watch The Reporter and our Website for upcoming events. Out webmaster works very hard to keep everyone posted on events. Make sure you get your email address on Sahib’s list. In closing, I would like to thank Ill. Sir Don Vos and Lady Carol for a fantastic job in 2010. With Lady Carol’s medical issues, they both showed great strength keeping Sahib and their lives going seeming without missing a beat. I can’t imagine the stress that was endured. They are my hero and heroin. Enjoy your time off together!

Spring is just around the corner and many things will be coming up. Ill. Sir Tom Millaway and Lady Kaye’s Potentates Ball on February 5. Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance is February 8 hosted by the Greeters Unit, they always have a fun evening, Bingo is always in need of help and this is one of the GREAT moneymakers for Sahib. We have Bingo every Tues-

They will all need help and you’ll be very welcomed. Hospital Days will be February 18 and 19; what a great way to help the Shriners Hospitals for Children and meet many new people and let them know who we are and what Shriners do to help children. Remember to support Sahib in all its activities (what a great place to meet and have dinner or just a few drinks), the clubs and units as we all move forward in this New Year. ave been promoting Sahib’s upcoming Legendary Ladies of Song and Chris Olson’s Memories of Elvis Show; more than 12 newspapers, local bulletins and five radio and TV stations have been contacted. I’ve been working with two new sources of local news information, the BradentonPatch and <info@thisweekinsarasota.com> to do what I could to let all know about Sahib. With the Potentate’s approval, I will be doing a fundraiser at Dominos Pizza on 12th and Tuttle ASAP. I am working with the Rotary Club to set up a hospital talk and visit.

I am still working with the Sarasota Herald Tribune reporter to do an on-site Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. There are still four contacts in Wauchula for hospital talks which I will do. Nobles, this is my last PR report; I will keep the Speakers Bureau and my hospital work, but conditions require that I drop the PR position. Let your clubs and units know that I need a relief and will work closely to turn over the position and don’t forget the Koins for Kids, see Mary in the front office for a mason jar, take it home and fill it up.

February 2011 . . .continued from page 4 Editor’s notes about Shriners Hospitals for Children and the children we treat. Two days each year are designated for our members to distribute a special edition of a Hospital Newspaper to the general public on street corners, in stores, and shopping centers, and (2) To raise funds for Shriners Hospitals through voluntary donations not only during those two days, but also throughout the year.” The reason I highlight this statement, is Sahib has long ago abandoned the “inform the public” part of our hospital days, we stopped publishing our hospital newspaper a number of years ago (our members claimed it did no good, and people were throwing them away in parking lots!) Many other Shrines continue to promote the effort in their communities (including Bahia, they name their event the “Paper Crusade!”) Sahib efforts last year were lower than in the past, and most likely will not improve without a philosophical change of our members. As I recall, the year we re-started the special edition of the hospital newspaper (1999,) we had a significant increase in collections over the previous year.

I am currently living in Sarasota where I should be able to remain until I either am redeployed or go to school. My plans for the future are to finish my degree for aeronautical science, obtain my commercial pilot’s license and eventually fly for a commercial airliner. I am not ruling out a possible career with the military in my future. Erik returned to his family after a year’s deployment to Iraq and joyously with no parts missing. ello ladies, it is with a sigh of relief that I can say the holidays are now behind us! We have been busy attending holiday parties, Grand Visitations and Installations at other organizations. The fashion show, held at Laurel Oak Country Club, was a great success. Lady Liz Fox did her usual top notch and professional best. Fellowship, fashions and fun were the highlights of the day. The food was great too! February is a busy month for us. Lady Jennie, the Grand High Priestess of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, visits our court on February 2 and 3. We have a couple of exciting days planned for her; this visit also represents her homecoming, as all official visits to the courts and hospitals have come to an end. I will report more on it next month. Our ladies are working hard to make it a success.

We will also hold the election of officers for the 2011-2012 year at this meeting. I wish the best to all the ladies who have stepped up to lead this great organization. It is a great honor. I can’t believe my year is ending. On March 2, Sar-I Court will hold a ceremonial to welcome new members to our court. I hope you will join me on this bittersweet day of ceremony and farewell! This will be my final meeting before turning the gavel over to Lady Patty Hunsberger. See you soon, and remember to begin each day with love in your heart! Please call me (941) 922-9311 or <fsdja@msn.com> for information about joining our active organization. We have great fun while working hard for our Shriners Hospitals for Children.

I

t has been a busy few weeks and we are still going full speed ahead. Our new Princess Recorder Donna Kay Duffy is getting settled in her new position in the temple. We have installed our Princess Zuliema Connie Lawson. Welcome aboard ladies. Diane Nourse and the ladies of the temple really outdid themselves with the tea held January 29. So many tasty delights to sample, you know where my diet went that day. Those who were unable to come missed all the beautiful hats, the wonderful food, the great conversations and socializing. We did very well in donations for the Shriners Hospitals for Children and will pass these on to the kids; thank you ladies for your generosity. It was so nice to meet many of our Masonic Family recently at the county fair held from January 13 to 23. Daughters of the Nile with some of our other Masonic organizations manned a booth. It has not been done for a few years and thanks to our sisters in the Order of the Eastern Star for getting the ball rolling. Four Masonic groups were represented and received some very good feedback. Masonry and its appendant bodies are getting the word out. We need to work together to exist and increase our numbers. Our official visit from Supreme Queen Sue Layman was a delight. The day began with a lunch prepared by the ladies. The ceremonial was just beautiful and brought a tear to your eyes on how well everyone did with their ritual and floor work. Ladies you made me so proud. The banquet gave us our fill of lasagna, stuffed shells, Greek salad, lots of garlic bread and the super dessert. It was so nice to meet so many Past Supreme Queens, Past Queens and Supreme Dignitaries. The maiden performance of the pageantry unit was a delight. The costume was just beautiful and it is not because I am partial to purple

that I liked it. I look forward to becoming a part of the unit when my term as queen is done. Your queen and her noble gave a presentation on the Lord’s Prayer. Guess who played the part of God, it wasn’t the queen’s noble! Supreme Queen Sue Layman had a wonderful time and we even got her in early so she was able to get some rest. Our trip to the Shrine Hospital was so very special because not only were we with the Supreme Queen but to see the smiles on those children’s faces will be imbedded in my mind forever. Our visit just seemed to fly by so fast and before we knew it, we were heading home. Our sales of handcrafted items at the pancake breakfast have been doing well. Marlies and Connie are great sales ladies. Keep up the great work. It was so nice to see Janie Bohannon and LaVerne Mims recently; both ladies have been ill for some time and it was so nice to see them at the pancake breakfast. Our prayers are with you both that you will be back in the full swing of things soon. Ladies please remember those who are ill and in sorrow with your prayers, cards and phone calls. When things are not going well it really means a lot to that person to be remembered and thought of. A white rose to Joan Thomas made her day; but what she didn’t realize when she called the sender to thank them, she made that person’s day much better. Joan needs our prayers as she is recuperating. I have mentioned some of our ladies; remember there are others who need our thoughts and prayers. Remember to get your registration in for Supreme Session which will be held in Tampa this year. Should you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Watch for more information in the March issue about Supreme Session and happenings at Nyla Temple.

he Venice Masonic Lodge No. 301 Friends without Family Christmas project was a huge success again this year. We received a lot of great donations for the residents, as well as enough money to get each one an atomic wall clock. The digital clocks show the time, date, day and both inside and outside temperature. This is all very important to the residents. A special thank you to everyone who donated and helped me with the wrapping. I could not do this project without all of you.

The residents were all very happy with their gifts. Sheryl, the activities director at the Masonic Home has sent me an email thanking everyone for making all our friends without family feel very special and having the party for them. She said the maintenance guys were busy hanging all the wall clocks. I think you all know how important this project is to me; I just can’t thank you all enough. Wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year.

High Twelve Club by Bob Rodd, Immediate Past State President, roddbobkat@aol.com

irst and foremost, I want to correct the months that Cortez Masonic High Twelve meets that I turned around in the January issue. It should have read, “we meet every Monday, November through April.” The one thing good about that mistake was I know people read the article as several called me about it. Thank you all. We are still getting settled in our new location at Duff’s Original Buffet at the corner of 60th Avenue and Route 41 in Bradenton. We would love to have you and your lady, if you have one, come for a visit and hopefully you will want to come back. If you have a good story to share, we will try to make time for it. We have a fun club; the more the merrier. Gene Black, this year’s club president is doing a fine job. We are numbering around 30-35 attendees each week and your addition would be most welcome. If you have questions call Gene Black at (941) 3596511 or me at (941) 776-0937. Just a couple of weeks ago, Gene and I had the privilege to install the High Twelve officers and directors of the West Pasco/Holiday Club No. 418 in New Port Richey. So many of us talk about age and can we handle responsibilities; guess what, the incoming president of this club is 96 years young. I did

not make a mistake; he is 96 and believe me when I say he could run circles around many of us. For any of you that are familiar with Rotary he also is a Past District Governor of that. What a guy. The first Monday of each month our club holds a fun auction with the members and visitors bringing items that may be old and slightly worn, or may be new, but in just about every case they are still in good and working condition. Proceeds of this monthly fun time are put toward our annual summer picnic out on the beaches for all to come and enjoy. You may be surprised and find people you know and have not seen in some time and are able to rekindle those relationships or you just might add some new ones to the list you have now. For whatever the reason, please come and check us out. Day: Mondays Time: arrive 10:30-11:15a.m. to socialize. We start to eat at 11:00 a.m. We open our get together around noon and finish around 1:00 p.m. Some even stay a little longer to socialize and eat some more. Remember, ladies are always invited. When you come into the restaurant, turn left and go directly to our private room; you pay us $8.50 per person for the meal, which includes tax and tip. Look forward to having you with us.

York Rite – Vision of Masonry by B. John Ross, KYCH, BjohnRO@comcast.net Continuing the “Vision of Masonry” As sincere and dedicated Masons, we should prayerfully search our own lives, actions, and hearts to see how we measure up to the “Vision of Masonry.” Are we living according to teachings and virtues set forth in the esoteric ceremonies and charges in the Lodge? Can the profane know and realize that we are Masons even though we present no card and wear no emblem? Yes, the “Image of Masonry” is the image of the Mason. All, good, honest and honorable men are not Masons, but certainly all Masons should be good, honest and honorable men. If they are not, then they are doing not only themselves discredit, but dishonor to the fraternity. The weakening of family life and family ties, the divorce rate and the tragedies which follow from broken homes threaten to destroy our way of life. Freemasonry teaches that a man should be a faithful and loving husband and a just and loyal father. Every Worshipful Master of a lodge knows that these vows and obligations are too often violated by some of his members. The problems are difficult, but the remedy is simple; as we in the lodge room gather around the Holy Altar, so again the family must return to the teachings of the Holy Bible and to devotions at the family altar disturbing and distracting influences that divide and separate parents and children should be put aside. Once again, we should return to the old-

fashioned disciplines and precepts that unite the family into a loyal unit of trust and love. Furthermore, Masons need to take an active and continuous interest in the public schools, not one week, but every week in the year and every day in the week. The courses of study need to be strengthened in the technical and scientific fields, in history, government and social sciences. We need to eliminate many of the frills and frivolities and emphasize basic and advanced courses to prepare our children for the competitive life today and tomorrow. Perhaps, most of all, there should be inculcated habits of self-discipline and initiative. In addition, Masons should fight all forms of corruption in government at whatever level. They should vote only for people who are honest and honorable, and should seek to oust from places of authority those who are dishonest and unfaithful to their trust. No longer should we be complacent and indifferent to public morals and standards of conduct. We should oppose as vigorously as we can movies which are dirty and corrupting. Our voices should be heard against the television programs which drown us, and particularly our children, in violence and sadism. We plan to conclude The Vision of Masonry in our March 2011 issue and hopefully reveal the author, time and place.

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

Scottish Rite by Lou Ortt, PP, 33°, lhortt@verizon.net

W

e have now reached February and while the month often seems dark and gloomy, there is a bright spot which tends to cause us all to move a little faster in our actions and thoughts. That bright spot is called Valentine’s Day—a day when we remember our loved ones. The major symbol for this celebration is the heart. How often do we take time to think just what this symbol stands for? We were taught that we were first prepared to be made Masons in our hearts (although it was the brain that did the work). The heart is the symbol of what man is or becomes as the brain does the work. According to the dictionary, the heart represents many levels of our being, i.e. the seat of our emotion, tenderness, affection. Love, kindness enthusiasm; the vital or essential inner part of anything; a person or dear one. With so many levels, is it any wonder that the heart has been the favorite term of poets, writers, historians, psalmists and

Masons throughout the ages to describe mans’ feeling, his joy, his love, his disappointments or sadness? Freemasonry has adopted this symbol and we can find it in many parts of our rituals. In the Eleventh Degree of Scottish Rite we see the symbol of the flaming heart used to represent those noble and heroic souls who have, throughout the ages, suffered or sacrificed themselves for their fellow brothers or their country. So, as we think about Valentine’s Day and we gaze on all those hearts, let us remember not only those we love, but also those who have made it possible for us to be here and to express our love because of the love they expressed. Remember our Scottish Rite meeting on February 14 with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and meeting at 7:30 p.m. If you plan to attend the dinner, call the Scottish Rite office.

ell we have sure hit the ground running this year. Our installation of officers in Tampa in January was well attended and well represented by your South of the Bay (SOB’s) brethren. As usual, the contingent from Sarasota and Bradenton was impressive. The Sarasota Scottish Rite Club consistently has the largest number of attendees of any of the other Scottish Rite Clubs in the Valley. If you’re interested in joining us for these monthly meetings they are on the second Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. Contact me or any of our other officers for details. We always carpool together so it makes it easy to attend. Speaking of officers, your new officers for the Sarasota Scottish Rite Club for 2011 are: Stephen Weatherly .. President sfw113@aol.com Allen Sorbie .............. Vice-President Allen.Sorbie@vertexinc.com Jerry Goacher ........... Second Vice-President & Prelate joy.jer@verizon.net Fred Heinzman ......... Secretary & Treasurer Fheinz8816@aol.com

At our January luncheon, we had close to 25 brethren and guests in attendance. If you’re not attending these luncheons, you’re really missing out on a great opportunity to share some great fellowship with your brethren. The luncheon’s are on the second Friday of every month at the Sahib in the back of the Sahara Room. Dress is casual and the conversation is lively. Bring your thick skin because we take no prisoners. I hope that you get this in time, our next big event is on Wednesday, February 2, at the Scottish Rite Building at 240 South Tuttle. It will be our first official club meeting of 2011. We’ll serve refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by a short meeting at 6:00 p.m. The program for the evening will be the Fourteenth Degree. The Degree will be exemplified in full regalia by the same members that perform it at both the spring and fall reunions at the Tampa Consistory. Hope to see you there. Brethren, I know everybody’s plate is full, but we really don’t ask for a lot of your time, a luncheon once a month and five regular meetings during the course of the year. Please try to come out and join us. We really could use your support, and who knows, you might even have a good time.

2011 Tournament of Roses Parade For some, volunteering was a chance to revisit a tradition of decorating Shriners’ and Masonic floats as well as an opportunity to share the experience with a younger generation. For others, such as Aurelio Gonzalez—a Shriners Hospitals for Children employee—decorating a float was a completely novel experience. Though Aurelio has been a Southern California resident for more than 30 years and has faithfully watched the parade since 1981, he never had an opportunity to get up close to a float, let alone decorate one. When he learned he could participate as a volunteer, he promptly signed up, along with his two children. Not only did his family have a great time . . .continued on page 47

ore than 60 volunteers spent two days cutting, gluing and placing dried and fresh flowers on the Shriners Hospitals for Children float for the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade. The volunteers included hospital employees, local Shriners, and Masonic youth groups from DeMolay, Rainbow Girls and Jobs Daughters. Volunteers traveled from as far as Arizona, Fresno and San Diego, as well as locally from the Los Angeles area.

Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of November 30, 2010, they have collected 70, 508 lbs., for a total of $33,776.93 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/ unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Call:
