pril showers bring May flowers; so it is said. After a cold winter, let us hope it may be so. May also brings to mind two very significant events. One is Mother’s Day and the other is Memorial Day. Once Abraham Lincoln said, “All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” Mothers are special people and maybe we never appreciate them until after the years have passed. Motherhood implies home. In the city of Atlanta, there is a statue of one of its prominent citizens, Harry W. Grady. Assuming the burdens of public responsibilities, one day he left his office. No one knew where he had gone. Later it became known that he had returned to his old homestead. He needed something that was missing. Seeing his mother, he said to her, “Your boy has been too much in the world and

has come back to be nourished.” Motherhood is where our roots are. Memorial Day is always an impressive time. In tribute to all those who died in all our wars, many will speak of the good and honorable men and women and the gratitude the nation owes them. In the sorrow of those, we find ourselves incapable of expressing our debt and gratitude, as we contemplate the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for their country. It is beyond the power of oratory to do justice to the task. Bereavement is far too deeply in the heart for mere words to penetrate. So, as Masons we wear the square and compass to be reminded that freedom must be won daily and guarded zealously so that our posterity may enjoy the luxury of being free. “I shall pass through this world but once. Any good I can do, let me do it now.”

t’s always great to recognize our Road Runner hospital drivers, several were honored at the last stated meeting, don’t miss the presentation photos on page 14. So you don’t have to scratch your head about the images on the front page, let me explain what they are all about. Shrine International and our Divan are very interested in you all becoming familiar with and using the various Websites created and maintained for your use. Over the last few months, I have mentioned all of these numerous times in the Friday Webletter and the Reporter. Shriners Village is now the central repository of all references a noble might need to stay up-todate with what Imperial is doing. Created for Shriners by Shriners, it’s your online home where you can drop by and connect with the people, places and events that make Shriners International the world's greatest fraternity.

beashrinernow.com is the goto place when you are approaching and working with a potential new member of Masonry or the Shrine. Of course, you all know about the Websites for Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals for Children, but when was the last time you checked them out, they are always adding new content, go there now and see what’s new. $hrine$avers covers all the special programs Imperial has procured as an exclusive and dynamic “members only” benefit program that provides benefits for nobles, their families, businesses and Shrines. ShrineSavers was created as a privilege and special thank you to members for their commitment and dedication to the fraternity and philanthropy. Each of these Websites offer subscriptions for email newsletters to keep you current on what is going on, subscribe today!

The Reporter: is published monthly (except in July), a subscription is included in our member’s annual Sahib Shrine dues of $80, by the Sahib Shrine Temple, Inc., 600 N. Beneva Road, Sarasota, FL 34232. Third-class postage paid at Manasota, FL.

Potentate’s Notes

Nobles, What a great year we have going for us here at Sahib Shrine; it has been a pleasure to serve as your Potentate for the year 2010. Attendance at our activities is still a major problem at Sahib. We believe that we offer a large venue of different programs. Let us not forget Thursday luncheon, Birthday Anniversary nights and Friday nights at our Shrine Restaurant. Please come and meet your friends at Sahib. The Master Mason event on March 30 was again a great night at Sahib. If you attended, you were in for an excellent program. Remember we are all Master Masons, which is where our journey started. Let’s try to attend lodge whenever we can. It’s wonderful for your soul. It also helps the lodge when we attend. Bingo is still our super fundraiser, and if you can help on Tuesdays, please come. Summer means many less volunteers available, so if you can please help. Your Shrine is doing well financially, and we have some projects coming up to keep your temple in first class repairs. Lady Carol and I feel privileged in how 2010 is doing. All of you nobles have been very helpful when we ask you to help. Thank you so much. Remember Sahib is yours and we understand that we must take care of it.

Yours in the Faith,

Don Vos, Potentate

T

he Florida Shrine Association will hold its annual convention this month in Ocala, May 5-8. This event is well attended by Sahib nobles with many of our units represented, and participating in various unit competitions. This event provides a good opportunity for us to socialize with fellow unit members from other temples and share fellowship with other Shrines from Florida as well as unit competitions. We had a Circus/Fair Appreciation Dinner on Monday, April 5; approximately 200 of our tireless volunteers attended. Many thanks to you all. The month of March proved to be very busy with all of the activities and events.

The Potentate’s Spring Cruise was April 9-24 to the British Isles; a 15-day voyage aboard the Grand Princess. What a way to relax and enjoy after a very busy first quarter. Do not forget Mom on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 9. Sahib is having a Sunday Fun Day on Sunday, May 23. Come out and enjoy. The Florida Grand Lodge in Orlando is coming up on the weekend of May 30, then our Sahib Ceremonial on June 4-5. Our degree team spends a great deal of time to produce the ceremonial, come out and watch it.

Chief Rabban’s notes by Tom Millaway, TJ-KT@earthlink.net

I

f we were up north, this is the time of year when the earth is regenerating itself; plants start to grow, the days get longer and we seek the outdoors for our fun. But here in Florida, where we have ‘just another day in paradise’, we can forget the cold winter weather we have had and just enjoy our climate. The Divan calendar is full and keeps us busy. We start May with a Potentate’s Ball in Miami, our famous Pancake Breakfast and the Florida Shrine Association Convention, where the Divan will be going to see our Sahib units compete with the best of other Florida Shrine units. The competition will be

tough, but we are all looking forward to bringing home our share of awards. We are also really hoping for an increase in attendance at our Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance. Please think about coming to help celebrate with other couples who are marking a special time in their lives. Another venue you may be missing out on is our Friday nights at Sahib. Please come and bring your friends for a good time that is really inexpensive and lots of fun and laughs. Have dinner and stay and enjoy the music and fellowship. At the end of the month, we will be travelling to Orlando for the Florida Grand Lodge. I leave you with my words for May; “It’s nice to be important, but more important to be nice.”

Assistant Rabban’s notes by Charles M. Levan, 33°, cmlevan99@aol.com

W

ell, I stopped by the box office today and Marylou asked, “Are you coming to…? When we tallied it all up, it was more than a fifty-dollar bill. Not that I am complaining, I am not. Marylou took my money and then had to divide it into three different parts for three different events. The lady is a whiz. She works the box office almost daily and takes care of everyone’s needs and desires, as far as reservations go. Where would we be without her? Then I was calling Monday Night Bar Bingo, when one of the players quietly calls BINGO. This is not an unusual happening as it generally happens at least ten times each Monday. What was unusual was the fact that the person who had the BINGO was also helping to land an airplane with no fuel left on board. (Yes our Recorder, John W. Cooney III)

Shriners Village https://www.shrinersvillage.com/

Sahib is a wonderful place. Overheard in the lounge, Don Vos, our Potentate, is “awesome!” This was an unsolicited compliment and well deserved. White attending an out-of-town Potentate’s Ball, the wife of one of my counterparts exclaimed, “Sahib Shriners’ Potentate’s Ball is the finest she has ever been to” (another unsolicited compliment) We still concentrate on having fun and fellowship, while attending to the needs of our nobility. Membership is also a high priority on our to-do list. So far, we have had at least three restorations this year. We are looking forward to many more. There are Master Masons out there that just need to be invited to join us in our fun and fellowship.

t is no wonder why the North American Shriners’ or Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (A.A.O.N.M.S.) are considered the “Worlds Greatest Fraternal Organization.” It is because the Shrine membership works so hard and strives to fund annually our Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. It is in this reflection, that I report our Gulf Shrine Club 2010 Baseball Spring Training event was another tremendously successful fundraiser. I want to thank each and every club officer, station captain, as well as their dedicated ladies, friends and family that came out to work the ballpark with us this year. Gulf Shrine Club would never be as successful in this event, as we are, without the generous time and

efforts donated by this year’s group of 93 workers. What a great testament to serving mankind. A very special Thank You to our Sahib Shrine Divan, Don and Carol Vos, Tom and Kaye Millaway, Bill and Stacie Lee Zurlo, as well as Dale and Donna LaBell, for coming out and helping us work our concession stands. It is always a true honor to have the highest of nobility in our midst. It was so successful that we were requested by professional baseball’s newest venture, the addition of the new minor league baseball, Bradenton Marauders, to operate this years summer game concessions. The Pittsburgh Pirates, along with concession operators Centerplate Inc., requested the Sahib

SAHIB REPORTER Shriners to work the concessions for this brand new 70 game series, from April through August 2010. Unfortunately we did not get the response or support from all clubs and units of Sahib Shrine and had to decline the offer. It is a lot of work, and a lot of fun, but, we need help. It was decided at the last minute, that the Shriners would not attempt to man these games, so in talks with our Ill. Potentate Don Vos, we will work to make it happen in the future. We would like to see more Shrine Units get involved and work in this fundraising effort. Please call Jim Smith, Chief Aide, myself, or any Divan member to be directed to the individual in charge of future games. We encourage and applaud

all Shriners' efforts to help. Bring your lady, or a friend and we will put you to work. This could become another great annual fundraising activity. We also had High Priest and Prophet Bill Zurlo, out to our Club’s April Luncheon, who gave us an update on the Shrine Hospitals and Sahib Shrine. Bringing in new members and our continued fundraisers are desperately needed. Our next luncheon will be Tuesday, May 11, and will be our last until September. Come out, join us and enjoy some of the best fellowship any Shrine club and unit can have. I am extremely proud to stand beside, walk with and work the many events that we do every year with these outstanding men. God Bless.

owdy, y’all! Here’s the latest from “Behind the Outhouse.” The Hillbillies presented our 34th check for $1,000 each to Sahib Shrine for the General Fund at the Stated Meeting on April 1. The Hillbilly Gals raised about $1,500 and the Hillbilly Guys matched it, to submit a check for $3,000 for the Wheelchair Fund at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Our annual Hillbilly Hoedown was Saturday, March 13, and a great success, serving 170 people. Yee Haw! We had a “Hillbilly Band” derived of new candidates and audience participation, playing hillbilly instruments, like washtubs, etc. Joe Humphreys was a great Hillbilly Band Director. All had fun, and it was a hit.

Plans are underway for the Imperial Hillbilly Convention to be held at Sahib Shrine next year, September 30 through October 2, 2011. We are forming planning committees and will need lots of volunteers. The Hillbillies have a fire truck for sale: 1960 F600 12,000 original miles, $500 or best offer. kay then, ya’all are stuck with me this month, as Barry is busy with Scottish Rite amongst other things. He wouldn’t tell me what; only that he was unavailable to handle the assignment this month. It’s not hunting season, and roller derby season is about finished, so I won’t even venture a guess as to what he is up to. Anyway, I don’t want to hear any debauching or lascivious comments about the content or my writing style.

Now that we have that said, let us get on to more tantalizing topics. Unfortunately, the excitement level of the Corps ‘tantalizing’ activities has waned a bit from Barry’s last report. However, there were a couple of things he mentioned that do need some updating. Our Annual Poker Run and Party were both a great success again this year. It is always a fun time and this year we had perfect weather for the event. There are so many to thank that it would take the rest

SAHIB REPORTER of our allotted space for this article and then I would surely leave someone out and be chastised the rest of my life, so one can only give a rousing applause for the Corps and their spouses and friends who made it all possible. Special kudos go to Big Al Dahlstrom for his invigorating leadership and organizational skills that put this event together and brought it to a terrific fruition. Of course, we all know where the real driving force comes from, right? Hugh kudos go to Jan for her constant help and lovely presence. I do believe that all involved would only say, “Hey Al, you da man ……. One More Year, One More Year.” A final donation to Sahib in the amount of $6,000 was presented to Ill. Sir Don at the April 1 Stated Meeting. When presented the check and he looked at it, I saw him start salivating and heard him mumbling something about an upcoming cruise bar bill. Not to sure what he meant, but… We also presented Ill. Sir Don with a check for the Transportation Fund of $846 from our Hospital Days endeavors at St. Armands Circle. Speaking of our illustrious leader, on the night of Ill. Sir Don’s ball many of you witnessed his entrance into Sahib’s grand hall riding behind Barry Hart on Barry’s big white parade Harley, escorted by Motor Corps President John Hubbard in front and followed by Motor Corps Vice President Eric Bock. And a very spectacular entrance it was. Well, within the Corps, we have certain traditions that we take very seriously. For example, you may have seen one of the motorcycles parked out front or

May 2010

going by with this gray furry thing hanging off of the rear, and the rider sporting a fancy long and very colorful necklace. The gray furry thing is a monkey. The honor of sporting this attire on one’s bike and neck is earned when one drops his motorcycle, regardless of the circumstances. Another tradition we observe is that whoever requires a ride behind a Corps member, for whatever reason, will be awarded a pink monkey. The monkey is pink as the second seat on a motorcycle is usually reserved for the rider’s female significant other and has become fondly known as, “Riding Bitch” when one sits there upon. Therefore, at the April stated meeting, we also presented Ill. Sir Don with is very own Pink Monkey mounted on a small trophy platform to commemorate the occasion. He was overjoyed to say the least… Happy riding, Ill. Sir and stop whining about it! Now, on to the future from when this was written. The weekend of May 21-23 will find a significant number of the Corps along with their families and friends in Murphy, North Carolina., for our annual spring sojourn to Gary Nickols’ River’s Edge RV Resort for his official spring opening. Of course, Gary’s resort just happens to be in the middle of some of the best bike riding roads in North Carolina, which is the reason we all ride or haul our two-wheelers all that way. It is also fast approaching the advent of Thursday Biker Billie Burger nights. I am sure that Chef Wally and all of his ‘wannabees’ will be there, slaving away . . .continued on page 32

As soon as you read this, phone him at 240-5737 with your contribution. Last month we accepted four new members; Bill Athas, John Cooney, Jim Watson and Vincent Flow. Then, over 40 nobles and ladies enjoyed an April Fools Mixer with poached salmon or roast pork at the Heron Creek Golf Club. See accompanying photos. With our weather, warming up we had a good turnout for our “Thanksgiving in April” turkey picnic. See accompanying photos by Phyllis Copher. Maddy Watson stood by with her MASH first aid kit in case Bob ‘Too Tall’ Somerville repeated his March picnic forehead collision with the top of our club trailer door! No reported walking wounded in April.

Each succeeding Tuesday morning breakfast at the Olde World Restaurant in North Port, our ranks swell and activities multiply. (Most recently, 47 nobles and ladies) We even sang “Happy 90th Birthday” to Chet Ray after he missed his cake one week! Recent guests included Dave Rubin’s acquaintance Stephanos Loisou from Aleppo Temple, Wilmington, Massachusetts; turns out that he and Don White grew up around the corner from each other. Any Mason or Shriner families are welcome to join us for our 7:30 a.m. breakfasts every Tuesday, 52 weeks a year where we usually enjoy some friendly banter and hi-jinks. Sol Schuman donated a camel for us to ride in our parades! Sickness and distress: Lady Jane Cornell is recovering from breaking her foot in three places. Lady Eleanor Galloway suffered a stroke and family members are searching for rehabilitation and care facility for her and Noble Bob who suffers progressive Alzheimer’s. Please offer support to these families and keep them in your thoughts and prayers. And as we go to press, no one has correctly identified our Club President Sam Cohen’s April “Quotable Notable” as President Harry S. Truman who said: “I believe the proper thing to do is what I try to do, and that’s right.” (And this is no April fool!) So your bumbling scribe offers the following quiz for May.

hat in our world is happening? We don’t have to tell you that it’s been an unseasonably cool winter here in paradise! As this is being written, it’s warmer in Wisconsin than it is in Venice! Global warming? Not here! But, the weather didn’t dampen the 2010 Sahib Shrine Circus, the successful Hospital Days collections, the parade in Arcadia, nor any of the other wonderful and many Sahib and Shrine club functions. So, upon reflection, things are pretty good, after all!

The Venice Shrine Club meets for lunch at 11:00 a.m. on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (except July and August) at the Venice-Nokomis Elks Club located at 1021 Discovery Way, Nokomis, Florida. The food is excellent, the programs are interesting and the fellowship is abundant. All Shriners are invited to join us. Please give President Bill Long a call a couple of days in advance, if possible, at 4087950. We look forward to greeting you.

hanks to Lady Trudy Whitney for her generous contribution of the late Noble Jack’s instruments and equipment. Noble Andy Wright looked much improved at a March Big Band Dance; however, sadly, he has asked to be relieved of his duties as Noblemen Director. Noble Jack Reynolds is still undergoing chemo but continues to have a positive attitude. We pray that all our ill nobles will be back with us soon. Noble Bill Yoh, Sr., former president of the Sahib Bands, passed away recently in north Florida where he resided near his talented musician son, Bill Yoh, Jr. Our sympathy goes out to his family. Kudos to Ill. Sir Jarrett Miller for his preparation and leadership of the March concert; it’s a shame that the audience wasn’t larger. Yours truly suffered some mechanical problems during the performance, but thanks to Bill Baker, Ben Boyles, and Bill Kelly the clarinet section survived. The season has wound down. No more Noblemen rehearsals and no more gigs for either band until October. Speaking of which, the Noblemen dance band schedules only six rehearsals for an entire year. This year, after the January rehearsal, the main hall was not made available to us, and in March, we were actually locked out of the building. Ill. Sir Don Vos and Recorder John Cooney have promised to fix that problem. At this writing, I’m confident that the April 6 rehearsal will go as scheduled. As we all know, the Noblemen dance band is the sole source of the funds

that support the entire Band unit, an expensive unit to maintain. Here’s a bit of history. In 1984, a committee was formed by President Mike Ash to suggest ongoing ways to finance the Band unit. Howard Wilson came up with the idea of a dance band to do early evening dances in order to raise money that would support both bands. He suggested the name, The Noblemen, and patterned the idea after a similar program he had participated in at Ararat Shrine in Kansas City. With the approval of Ill. Sir Ted Barton, the Tea Dances (now known as Big Band Dances) began 25 years ago. Appropriately, this month’s bio honoree will be Noble Howard Wilson. Noble Wilson is a truly remarkable high achiever in several areas of human endeavor. Having earned degrees with honors in engineering from both Avila and Rockhurst Universities in Kansas City, he went on to graduate studies at Missouri University and the University of Michigan. Now retired as Supt. of Quality Control for the Honeywell Corporation, he has coauthored several books on quality control that have been published internationally, and, since 1983, he has been a book reviewer for the American Society of Quality Control Engineers. Noble Howard was introduced to music at the feet of a father who performed for local square dances in the Ozarks. He later performed as part of the Wilson Boys country music band. An accomplished string musician, he sang and played at station KWTO in

While serving as an executive engineer in his day job, he also played in the Missouri Riverboat Jazz Band, the Ararat Dance Band, and for various radio and TV productions. Howard was bassist in the Noblemen dance band for 18 years. He and Mike Ash formed the Notables combo that has performed for virtually every private venue in two counties over the past 25 years. Howard is also an acclaimed athlete. He is listed in Who’s Who in Archery having won several regional

reetings everyone, the Model Ts unit is enjoying a good year so far. Participation is way up and while breakdowns have been minimal so far this year. Unit camaraderie is very high, and everyone seems to be enjoying life in the Model Ts. The second Sunday in May has been set aside in honor of motherhood. Many churches have special services in which they honor mothers of the congregation. They usually present the oldest mom, youngest mom, and mom with the most children a corsage. There is a custom of wearing a carnation on Mother’s Day. A colored carnation means that the person’s mother is living. A white carnation indicates that a person’s mom is dead. Years ago, England observed what they called Mothering Sunday. It came in Mid-lent. The first suggestion for a day set aside to honor mothers was made by Julia Ward Howe. She suggested that it be observed on June 2, as a day dedicated to peace. Julia was born in 1819 in New York to a prominent family. She was an American writer, lecturer and reformer. She was known as one of the most famous women of her time. She wrote “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, which was inspired when she visited military camps in Washington, D.C., during the Civil War in 1861. It became the major war song of the Union forces. Julia became interested in the women’s move-

ment. She became the first president of the New England Woman Suffrages Association. Three years after Frank Hering of Indiana launched his campaign for observance of Mother’s Day in 1904; Anna Jarvis began a campaign to a nationwide observance of Mother’s Day. She chose the second Sunday in May. She also began the custom of wearing the carnation. Jarvis’ own mother was honored on the first service at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, on May 10, 1908. Later, at the general assembly in 1912, a delegate from Andrews Church introduced a resolution recognizing Jarvis as the founder of Mother’s Day, and suggested that Mother’s Day be observed on the second Sunday in May. President Woodrow Wilson signed a joint resolution in Congress on May 9, 1914, recommending that the federal government observe Mother’s Day. The next year, the president was authorized to proclaim an annual holiday. A Mother’s Blessing Of all the special joys in life, The big ones and the small, A mother’s love and tenderness Is the greatest of them all. ~~~~~Author unknown~~~~

t sure was great to have been a Shriner and participate in the Rodeo Parade in Arcadia on March 13, 2010. It was truly a glorious day with the sun shining on all those spectators on the sidelines watching all those units go by. Our Shrine was well represented with many of our units. Our Oriental Band had 15 bandsmen making that heavenly music. Many thanks to the Shrine organizing committee; great job, Scrib. Another great afternoon was had by all that attended the Sahib Spring Picnic. Eleven of our bandsmen made sure that the youngsters and their Mom’s were indoctrinated into the finer aspects of Oriental instruments and tunes. Floyd, our Director, made sure all went well!

As I mentioned in the April Reporter, the FSA/ FSOBA is being held in Ocala on May 5 to 8. This will be the first Fantasy for our band in two years, with 14 bandsmen looking forward to a great weekend. Also, on May 11, the Oriental Band is sponsoring the Birthday/Anniversary dance. We ask all of you and your friends to support the Shrine and the Oriental Band Music makers. Our deepest Sympathy to Noble Bobby Browne on the loss of his Lady Lil; rest in peace. REMEMBER: Support your Shrine, collect pulltabs and keep a child in your heart.

Please visit your Blue Lodge, make yourself known to all Lodge members and remember the Potentate’s pledge of Fun, Fellowship and Family. We are all FAMILY. My lady and I wish all a pleasant and warm summer. We also hope we can get summer baseball off and running with the A Team for the Pirates at McKechnie Field. See you all at the ballpark.

known that the average household has about $70 in loose change around the house. Fill a jar or jars for the kids. Some groups have raised into the thousands so I think we can do as good.

...a Masonic organization composed of Master Masons and their properly qualified female relatives.

n organization many of us have found little opportunity to know about is the “Order of the Amaranth,” a Masonic organization composed of Master Masons and their properly qualified female relatives. In its teachings, the members are emphatically reminded of their duties to God, to their country and to their fellow beings. They are urged to portray, by precept and example, their belief in the “Golden Rule” and by conforming to the virtues inherent in Truth, Faith, Wisdom and Charity, they can prove to others the goodness promulgated by the Order. Its Philanthropic project is the Amaranth Diabetes Foundation, and since 1972, the funds raised for The Amaranth Diabetes Foundation Trust are directed towards research grants to aid in finding a cure for diabetes. No expenses are deducted from donations given to the American Diabetes Association. The extent of its charitable work and overall benevolence is limited only by the opportunities that exist, and the ability to secure adequate funding.

of societies were started in America, in which females could become members. The two of concern here are the “Order of the Eastern Star” and the “Order of the Amaranth.” In 1860, Brother James B. Taylor from Newark, NJ, attempted to compose the material to start a new “Society”. He learned that in 1653, Queen Christina of Sweden,, had combined a group of “Sir Knights” and “Ladies” together to have “gala” parties. She called this group the “Order of the Amarantha”. He was so impressed with what he had read, he copied many of the symbols and much of the phraseology used therein and even copied the name, the “Order of the Amaranth”. Brother Robert McCoy, who was in control of the “Order of the Eastern Star” around 1870, decided that it might be advisable to add two or more degrees to it. Then, in 1873, he formed the “Rite of Adoption,” with the “Order of the Eastern Star” as the first, or initiatory degree, and “The Queen of the South” as the second degree and the “Order of the Amaranth” as the third or highest degree. His plan A Brief History was to have these degrees given About three hundred years ago in separately but under the control of Sweden, a little girl just six years one body. Both Eastern Star “Chapold named Christina became the ters” and Amaranth “Courts” were ruler of that country. As she grew included in the Adoptive Rite to womanhood, she was very fond Ritual. The Order of the Amaranth of things beautiful, cultured and was officially organized June 14, of social importance. During her 1873, in New York City as part of reign as Queen, she created the the Rite of Adoption and it was Order of the Amaranth Order of the Amarantha for the stated: “This Organization shall ladies and knights of her royal court, building it be known as the ‘Rite of Adoption of the World’ and around the character of Lady Amarantha, who was shall consist of the degrees of the Eastern Star, the portrayed as being a beautiful, virtuous and talented Queen of the South and The Amaranth.” In 1921, by Lady of the Court. Queen Christina herself acted the mutual agreement, this requirement ceased. They part of Lady Amarantha; and the name of the order are now completely separate organizations. embers of the York Rite may seek further “light” by becoming members of additional York Rite bodies. A review of one such body follows: Knight Masonry contains those degrees which are worked within a Council of Knight Masons under the jurisdiction of the Grand Council of KNIGHT MASONS. The Council of Knight Masons was constituted in 1923 to look after the degrees previously worked by Royal Arch Chapters, Preceptories of High Knight Templars and even a Prince Rose Croix Chapter. The history of the Judean people, as contained in the Roll of the Law, including the Books of Ezra, Jeremiah and Esdras, records three outstanding episodes intimately connected with Ancient Irish Universal Masonry:

1. The building of King Solomon’s Temple Craft Masonry 2. The repairs of the Temple by King Josiah Irish Royal Arch Masonry 3. The building of the Second Temple by Zerubabbel after the return of the Tribes of Judah and Benjamin from their seventy years of captivity in Babylon, circa 536 B.C.E. Knight Masonry. 4. So by becoming a Knight Mason you are completing a sequence intimately related to the teaching of Masonry. There are three degrees in Knight Masonry formerly known as the Red Cross Degrees. They are Knight of the Sword, Knight of the East and Knight of the East and West (to be continued in the June issue.)

Scottish Rite by Lou Ortt, PP, 33°, lhortt@verizon.net

T

he outline of a fish was one of the original signs of a Christian and was often placed on their tombs and worn as an ornament. As Masons, we realize the significance of a sign or symbol to identify a brother craftsman, and so it was for Christians who traveled and spoke about Christ and his teachings. The early teachers were always in danger of being arrested and imprisoned. To protect themselves they devised the sign of the fish because in Greek the five initials of the words meaning “Jesus Christ Son of God, the Savior” were JXOTE (pronounced ick-tuss) which is the Greek word for fish. When a Christian met a stranger he thought might be a Christian he would draw a half of a fish in the sand; and the stranger, recognizing it, would draw the other half. As the Church developed, use of the fish declined in favor of the sign of the Cross. Martin Luther, the German theologian, attempted to bring the fish back;

but was over ruled by the Christian Knights who preferred to have the Cross on their banners. Luther’s rationale for use of the fish was that the fish represented quiet and peacefulness, while the cross was a symbol of death and violence. Luther’s main argument was that the Knights did not have the right to kill and destroy in the name of the Cross of Christ. Today, however many churches use the fish symbol, reviving the opinion of Clement of Alexandria, that it reminds Christians of the origin of their spiritual life in the waters of Baptism. In the 26th Degree of Scottish Rite we give each new member a fish as a reminder to practice mercy and forgiveness and to be tolerant of the religious beliefs of all peoples of the world, since it from all of these that the truths of Freemasonry come. Don’t forget the Reunion on May 1 and May 8 which honors Ill. Robert Goldsmith, who was the Sovereign Grand Inspector for Florida.

s most of you know by know, May 1 & 8 are the dates for the Scottish Rite Spring Reunion at the Tampa Consistory. By the time you receive this the first weekend will probably already have taken place, but you can still make plans to join us on the 8th for the second half of the degree work.

Our luncheon at the Sahib this month will take place on the 14th. Come as you are and order off the menu. On June 2, we’ll have our meeting and present the 12th Degree at the Scottish Rite Building at 240 S. Tuttle Ave. This is one of the newer degree’s to be exemplified so it should be very interesting. Hope to see you there.

Research in Spinal Cord Injury Improves Assessment and Treatment

A spinal cord injury (SCI) can be devastating. Generally resulting in some degree of paralysis and disruption of the body’s voluntary and involuntary actions, the impact and implications of SCI last a lifetime. Shriners Hospitals for Children® is committed to providing expert orthopaedic and rehabilitative care to its patients with SCI. However, being able to offer the best care is dependent on accurate assessment and diagnosis, which requires being able to determine the exact level and extent of injury. In pediatric SCI, this has been especially difficult due to the lack of pediatric-based tools; the standard test for assessing SCI was designed for adults. Researchers have found that age 6 may be the youngest age children are developmentally able to understand the instructions, and older children do not react well to some aspects of the test. To fill the void in pediatric evaluations, researchers at Shriners

Hospitals for Children®, led by MJ Mulcahey, Ph.D., director of rehabilitation services and clinical research at the Philadelphia hospital, established the first assessment guidelines applicable to kids with SCI as young as 3 months old. Funded by research grants from Shriners Hospitals for Children®, the pediatric version of the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury, known as WeeStep, is an electronic learning module that compliments the established assessment program for adults with SCI. The WeeStep provides evidence-based methods to evaluate and classify the level and implications of SCI in children, based on established childhood developmental guidelines. These new guidelines will help professionals determine the level and extent of SCI and allow for reasonable predictions or expectations for neurological recovery and for developing the best medical care plan for each patient. The WeeStep is available to medical professionals world-wide via the American Spinal Injury Association Web site. Another effort to increase understanding of SCI and related problems is the establishment of the Pediatric Research Center, which opened in September 2009 in Philadelphia. The 23,000 square-foot facility, located in the new Temple University Medical School Education and Research Building across the street from Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Philadelphia, will be used primarily for research in neural (nerve) repair and

rehabilitation, including the spinal cord, neuromuscular injury and brain injury. The Center is under the direction of Michael Selzer, M.D., former director of rehabilitation research and development for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Temple University and Shriners Hospitals for Children® aim to establish a translational research program where basic science developments can benefit children with neuromuscular conditions. Drs. Selzer and Mulcahey have strategically planned to connect basic science to clinical research so that new knowledge will be offered to children receiving care from Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Currently, the health care system is funding approximately 12 research studies at the three hospitals with SCI programs involving different aspects of SCI, ranging from cell repair to quality of life issues. In addition, researchers at Shriners Hospitals for Children® share their expertise through academic affiliations at noteworthy institutions and by providing opportunities for postdoctoral researchers. The emphasis on research and education is indicative of Shriners Hospitals for Children®’s total commitment to determining, as well as providing, the best care for children with SCI. Shriners Hospitals for Children® depends on donations to fund all its programs, including research. Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of December 10, 2009, they have collected 65,743 lbs., for a total of $31,275.13 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/ unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Call:

Medical Staff Recognized for Expertise

Oscar Suman, Ph. D.

Robert Sheridan, M.D.

One reason Shriners Hospitals for Children® is renowned world-wide as a leader in burn care is the excellence and expertise of the health care system’s staff. Two examples are Oscar Suman, Ph.D., and Robert Sheridan, M.D. Oscar Suman, Ph.D., an exercise physiologist and director of the Children’s Exercise and Wellness Center at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Galveston and associate professor at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, was honored by President Barack Obama for his work in helping children recover from burns at a White House ceremony in January. Dr. Suman was one of 100 researchers selected to receive the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. The award is the highest honor given by the government to outstanding scientists and engineers who are in the early stages of their careers. The award is meant to recognize scientists who have demonstrated potential for leadership in developing and discovering knowledge in science and technology. Dr. Suman specializes in developing exercise regimens to help children recover from burns. “It is an extremely great honor to be nationally recognized for the work we do at the Shriners Hospital in Galveston,” said Dr. Suman. “It is a reflection of the great work and dedication that our Galveston staff and faculty exhibit daily. I hope to be able to continue to devote my life to burn care research.”

The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers Program is administered by the National Science and Technology Council. Several participating federal agencies submit nominations, including the National Institutes of Health, which nominated Dr. Suman. The respect for Shriners Hospitals for Children® among those in the burn care field is indicated by prestigious leadership positions held by hospital staff. Robert Sheridan, M.D., assistant chief of staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Boston currently serves as the president of the American Burn Association, a premier national organization dedicated to improving the lives of those with burn injuries. In addition, Dr. Sheridan is co-director of the Sumner Redstone Adult Burn Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and an associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Sheridan is certified in surgery and surgical critical care and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Chest Physicians and American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. The expertise of the medical staff of Shriners Hospitals for Children® is part of what allows the health care system to change the world through caring for kids every day. www.shrinershospitals.org OSQ110MSRF
