ithin the ancient art of Masonry lies the sinister spectre of distress, which, in various guises, threatens the peace, harmony and unity of the innocent Mason. That ugly “devil” of ill will and greed is the object of fear, against which some brave hero must arise to save the victim from despair. Who is to be that hero to whom we can turn for deliverance? That heroism we look for to conquer the darkness of our bewilderment must be within us. It is of necessity we build for ourselves the foundations of strength and courage. Do you remember when you were “Raised” a Mason? It was one of the most telling experiences of your Masonic life. It was a sign of achievement. Later as we traveled our Masonic journeys, we always return to that beginning which set

us on our way to future adventures. It was and is a sign of hope. Springtime is hope. It is one of the significant signs of optimism. Springtime speaks to our being raised from darkness into light, calling us out of despair to a rebirth of opportunity and a new horizon. In a book, called “Light from Many Lamps,” it is written that “Always, out of every age, has come a new dawn, a rebirth of life and spirit, the powerful surge of progress carrying us onward and upward... The ever-recurring evidence of history is that no time is as bad as it seems.” That is the talisman of faith. Masons wear many symbols and emblems which are our badges of honor. The badges we wear are to let the light within us so shine that others, seeing us, may glorify our Supreme Architect of the Universe.

t this time of year, when we have the official visitation of our Imperial Potentate and our own Potentate has his Potentate’s Ball, I admit to feelings of pride! Pride brought about by the obvious feelings I see among my fellow nobles as they meet and greet the visiting Imperial Potentate, they know he has spent many years supporting and trying to build the fraternity they love. For close to 15 years, I have been photographing the visits of the Imperial Potentates and listening to the message they convey to our audience of nobles. The admiration I see from the old hands and the rank-and-file nobles is the same, they all are excited to be able to meet and interact with their leader. I suspect being this close to the Imperial Headquarters, we have an advantage over a lot of temples out in the hinterlands, it doesn’t take much effort for Imperial officers to visit us. This year it was even more evident, as we had

not only our Imperial Potentate, but our Deputy Imperial Potentate and our Imperial Marshal. From what I can tell from the conversations I’ve had, the Imperial officers are just as impressed with what Sahib nobles and leaders are doing. I also heard, our Imperial Potentate plans additional visits later in the year, but then this temple has always had a special relationship with Imp. Sir Jack Jones. He has spent a lot of time here over the years, and Egypt being our mother temple, many of our charter members have had a close relationship with him for a long time and appreciate his support. There are photos throughout this issue and on our Website attesting to the enthusiasm and affection our members showed our Imperial visitors, so the hard work that goes into these events every year is well spent, it allows members to display their ‘pride’ in ways they might not be able to the rest of the year.

Potentate’s Notes

Nobles, Lady Carol and I would like to thank you for making last month’s offerings a success. My didn’t the month fly by? It ended with a tribute to Bill Batten who has retired as our Recorder. It was a special and very well attended party for Bill. February started with the Thursday luncheon honoring our Imp. Sir Jack H. Jones, who was brought to the front door by the Motor Corps. He made an excellent speech. Also in attendance was Deputy Imp. Sir George Mitchell. Both Imperial officers attended the Thursday Night Hillbilly Dinner, especially enjoying the fried green tomatoes and buffet. All this was followed by our Friday night dinner and dance. Saturday we added Imp. Sir Gary the Imperial Marshal, to the cast and made it a great and festive Potentate’s Ball. Having three Imperial officers was a real coup. It started with the Motor Corps bringing me in with three white Harley Davidson Motorcycles. What an entrance!! We had the Pipes and Drum Unit give a tremendous concert. It was a standing ovation for the packed house here at Sahib Shrine. Lady Carol and I would like to thank everyone for helping to make this year’s Potentate Ball such a success, especially to all our ladies who decorated and set up our main hall, it was just beautiful. Let us not forget to help out as volunteers for Bingo, Sarasota County Fair, Pittsburgh Pirates Ballpark and the Sahib Shrine Circus. Remember to get your Ma and Pa Circus Pins. It is with a thankful heart that Lady Carol and I appreciate all of your prayers, thoughts and cards we received during her illness.

Yours in the Faith,

Don Vos, Potentate

T

he year has started very busy. I hope everyone had a chance to attend the Potentate’s Ball in February. It was a great event, for the 352 people in attendance, a packed house. Imperial Potentate Jack H. Jones, Deputy Imperial Potentate George Mitchell and Imperial Marshal Gary Bergenske joined our Ill. Sir Don Vos at his Potentate Ball. The full band played dance music and our kitchen staff provided a fabulous meal. Our staff that worked tirelessly planning, decorating, and serving, deserves a big congratulation for their efforts. Ill. Sir Don Vos made an incredible entrance after our Past Potentates, visiting guests and our Divan were escorted to their seats. On the back of a Harley with Motor Corps escort, our

Ill. Sir Don Vos made his entrance into the Main Hall—truly spectacular. The calendar for March is full with events as well. We have a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner on the 17th, the Banjo Band Concert on the 22nd, the Spring Picnic on the 28th, as well as the Sarasota County Fair the 19th to the 28th, and spring training baseball begins. Many of our nobles and their ladies will be volunteering for these events, and will welcome a slower pace in the months that follow. We have music on Friday nights in the Sahara Lounge from 6:30-9:30 p.m. See the calendar at the back of The Reporter. Make reservations and join us for dinner and music.

he winds of March have swept away the first two months of this year so fast, I cannot believe it. Ill. Sir Don Vos and Lady Carol had a spectacular Potentate’s Ball, which was enjoyed by all, including our Imperial guests. This month will include our Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance sponsored by the Clown Unit, with music by the “Brass Rings.” Perhaps we’re in for a few surprises from the Clowns! Our Hillbilly Hoedown is this month, complete with vittles and music, and our Motor Corps is having their Annual Poker Run. If you haven’t attended either of these venues before, stop

by and see what a great time you will have. We need to support both of these hard working clubs. The Banjo Band Concert is also this month—always a crowd pleaser. Are we tired yet? More things to do—our Spring Picnic, The Sarasota County Fair and our dinner for the Lodges and Master Masons, put on by the Past Masters. Remember Ill. Sir Don’s motto, “Fun Fellowship and Family.” Try to phone a member of your unit or club that you haven’t seen in awhile. This may be the very thing that will get him active again. We are Brothers and we care.

ow! What a Potentate’s Ball we had last month. Three Imperial Officers were present and the Potentate arrives on a huge Harley Davidson motorcycle. What a great entrance! The meal was great and the Pipes & Drums entertainment was excellent. March is another event-filled month, baseball games, Banjo Band Concert, Sarasota County Fair, Vermont Grand Lodge, Masonic Villages of Pennsyl-

vania, Spring Picnic, and of course we can not forget the Pancake Breakfast. There is something for everyone, and if you need something else, just let us know what you want. Membership continues to be our focus. There are hundreds of Master Masons in our district who are not Shriners. They need to be informed of the fun, fellowship and family we have at Sahib Shriners. Join the fun and help Sahib grow.

f you wonder, how could you thank over 100 people for donating their time in working for the Gulf Shrine Club during the Pittsburgh Pirates spring training games last year, you could start by showing your profound appreciation in a gala in their honor, an extraordinary event of dinner, entertainment and music for their dancing and listening pleasure and above all fellowship! On Monday January 18, such an event took place at the American Legion Post #24, when our club hosted a great event, Baseball Appreciation Dinner for all the loyal baseball workers that worked so diligently during the 2009 month of March and assisted our club and Sahib Shrine, and enabled us to

continue our work for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Present were Divan members past and present: Immediate Past Potentate Oscar Cloutier, Past Potentate & Treasurer Dale LaBell, Chief Rabban Tom Millaway, High Priest & Prophet Bill Zurlo, and our Potentate Ill. Sir Don Vos, all accompanied by their lovely ladies, all having as much fun, as it was working during the spring training games at McKechnie Field. Gulf Shrine Club Past Pres. Jim Jensen, baseball event chairman, was the master of ceremonies, and gave a history of this annual event and our 17 years of involvement in this endeavor.

arch is finally here and with it, the renewal of spring and hopefully some warmer weather. It’s been one of the coolest winters the Motor Corps can remember and, while we may look cool in that heavy leather gear, I’d prefer warmer days myself. At least we didn’t have to put snow chains on the bike like some of our northern (or should I say, Yankee) brothers do. February found the Motor Corps hard at work getting ready for our upcoming Poker Run. Big Al Dahlberg has been everywhere, selling wagon of cheer tickets and Poker Run T-shirts. Have you seen the shirts? They are available to the public and they are quite snazzy, so get one or two while they last. Many of our group gathered at the Thunder-by-the-Bay motorcycle event to sell wagon of cheer tickets. Eric (Speedtriple) Bock and I, with our lovely ladies, Leslie (Speeddouble) and Barbara (BBall) actually took about a 60-mile spin up to north Longboat Key before heading over to the rally. My wife, BBall has almost defrosted from that chilly ride. Downtown we met John (Hotrod) Hubbard and his lady Carol, Wally (Reddog) Lacey and his lady Connie (Cooter), Ben

(The Inspector) Pfeiffer, Tony (The Deuce) Gallanti, Steve (Varmint) Helin, Gary (Stumpy) Nickols and his lady Tracy (Skippy), Theo (Sasquatch) Vreuls and his lady Jill (Shamrock), Ed (Photoshop) Jordan and his lady Theresa, Terry (Bubba Lee) Meadows and probably some others I’ve forgotten. Anyway, we froze our tails off and sold a bunch of tickets and had a good time. On the 21st of February, we had our Spaghetti Dinner. Since I’m writing this article two weeks before that date, I’ll not go into any details about the specifics of that event. I can say with assurance that our thanks go out to the many individuals who we know will help us, including the Rainbow Girls and Lou Ortt, the Hillbillies and especially the Hillbilly girls, the Divan, the many Motor Corps members and especially our ladies and the many Shriners and Shrine ladies who both volunteer or who come and eat. One of our biggest events will happen on the 21st of March. Our Poker Run and Road Rally is an event you will want to attend. Here’s how it works. Show up . . .continued on page 45

We enjoyed fun and games with delicious sausage and hot dogs with onions and peppers prepared by Chief Chef Jack Watson assisted by Lady Matty (they started preparations on Sunday!) plus Noble helpers J.D. Copher, P.W. Towsley, Roger Dalton, Ed Cornell and Dave Rubin. See accompanying photos and details by Louise Hall. February kicked off with over 25 nobles and ladies (many serving several two-hour shifts in the rain) collecting Hospital Days donations at three North Port locations to support the Shriners Hospitals for Children providing orthopedic care and burn treatment for kids. We celebrated our success with a ‘Steak Out’ at Dallas White Park brilliantly organized by Ed ‘Mr. Fixit’ Cornell. Each succeeding Tuesday morning breakfast at the Olde World Restaurant in North Port, our ranks swell and activities multiply. Recent guests included Dave Rubin’s friend Paul J. Valois of North Port, and Wood Beeghly’s son Jerry, visiting from Brooklyn,

New York. We also welcomed new member Les Ruggiero of Manatee Lodge No. 31 where he is Junior Deacon and a member of Sahib. Any Mason or Shriner families are welcome to join us for our 7:30 a.m. breakfasts every Tuesday, 52 weeks a year where we usually enjoy some friendly banter and hi-jinks. Noble John Cannon presented Bob Somerville with a Somerville (MA) Lodge T-shirt promoting the local annual road race to benefit D.A.R.E. (Drug, Alcohol Resistance Education). Dave Rubin is 74, Bob

SAHIB REPORTER Adams celebrated his birthday in January and we blew the roof off celebrating ‘Doc’ Schaeferle’s 98th birthday by serenading him with a Happy Birthday song accompanied by Bob Kifer on his tuba! See photo accompanying by Phyllis Copher. Doc said he didn’t feel a day older than 80. Sickness and distress: B. John Ross thanked all for the sympathy cards and phone calls on the sudden passing of Lady Roberta. Past President Don Walentuck has been hospitalized in Ft. Myers for several months with kidney transplant failure, and Otis Manchester has been diagnosed with cancer and will undergo six weeks of chemotherapy. John Cannon’s brother Don in Portland Maine is in very

critical condition with a brain tumor. Randy Anderson is now feeling better with continued treatment for irregular heart rhythm. And as we go to press, none has identified President Sam Cohen’s February ‘Quotable Notable’ who wrote: “It is what it is; and it isn’t what it isn’t; so don’t try to make it what it’s not! So we will continue the quiz for another month. F

ebruary has been a very active month in the Venice Shrine Club. We were most honored to have Ill. Sir Don Vos officiate at the installation of our officers and directors during a dinner/dance on January 30. The following nobles were installed and charged to perform the duties of their respective offices: President ........................ Bill Long 1st Vice President ......... Jim Jensen 2ndVice President ......... Nick Mulig 3rd Vice President ........ John Brooks Treasurer ....................... Ron Morrison Secretary ....................... Ralph Boegel Directors or 2010 are Evan Lebson, Andy Anthony, Jerry Campbell, Carroll Scribner and Charles Hamilton. Installed as officers of the Keystone Kops were Richard Morrison, Chief; Bob Munson, Ass’t Chief; Bill Long, Secretary and Norm Benson, Treasurer. Our Sweethearts Luncheon on February 16 honored our ladies and widows of deceased Venice Shrine

Club members. On February 20, the Keystone Kops repeated their famous steak cookout complete with baked potatoes, baked beans and beverages. A good time was had by all. And, of course, our nobles were busy with Hospital Days on February 3, 4 and 5, as were the nobles of all Shrine clubs. The Venice Shrine Club lunches the third Tuesday of each month at 11:00 a.m. at the Venice-Nokomis Elks Club. All Shriners, Masons and their guests are invited to join us. Give President Long a call at 4087950 so he can alert the chef. One last thought, a special “welcome back” to immediate Past Potentate Oscar Cloutier, who had a couple of back surgeries at the beginning of this year, and is now up and moving around and shaking hands again. Oscar developed back problems just before starting his very busy year as Potentate. One would never have known, from his energetic and very effective leadership, that he was “hurting” all the time. Thank you, Oscar!

SHRINE UNIT NEWS Bands by Mike Ash, MASH10@aol.com

T

he Concert Band played a great concert for the Thursday Luncheon on February 18. It was the culmination of weeks of rehearsals of rather challenging music with our Director, Ill. Sir Jarrett Miller, showing infinite patience as we tried to master it. We could really use more musicians and hopefully there are some nobles out there who will join us soon. A special call goes out for percussionists who can read music. On March 19, the band will perform an evening concert to raise funds for Sahib. We invite everyone to bring their friends and fill the hall for the good of the order. Director Jarrett has faithfully presided over every performance and rehearsal for over four years. Finally, he took one off to go on a cruise with Lady Susan to celebrate his diamond birthday in February. Bon voyage to a hard working director. The Noblemen performed for four Tea Dances and the Potentate’s Ball in January and February. Armand Olivera is still at the helm during the unfortunate absence of Director Andy Wright. Andy is still under treatment for serious medical issues. On the bright side, it was great to see him and Lady Beverly visiting at the Tea Dances. Andy’s a genuine trooper along with his great talent. There are five more performances on the March and April Noblemen schedule including four Tea Dances and a gig at Michael’s On East for catholic charities. We have received public-

Shriner Discount $3.00 (Must show Shriner ID!) "We're Eager To Please!" Now at all Eager Beaver Locations (Previously listed as Beneva Car Wash)

ity support from the Sarasota Herald Tribune for which we are very grateful, but we really need support from the nobility to boost attendance. This month’s bio honoree is Russ Bunger, our hard working 1st trumpet player, treasurer, and valued board member. Russ grew up in Lewisburg, Ohio, attended local schools and Ohio Northern University. His professional career was as a rep and manager for Equitable Life for over 24 years. Noble Russ joined Antioch Shrine in 1956, and played in the Antioch Million Dollar Shrine Band until moving to Youngstown in 1969. In Youngstown, he served the community as Boy Scout Council president and received the prestigious Silver Beaver award for his efforts. He then transferred to Rochester, New York in 1980, joined the Damascus Shrine and played in their band as well. After retiring in 1986, Russ moved to the Florida east coast and played in the West Palm Beach Shrine band and in the Boynton Beach concert band. Fortunately, for us, he relocated to our area and affiliated with Sahib in 2004. He performs both in the Sahib Concert band and in the Noblemen dance band. Russ has six children and lives with his lovely wife, Lady Sue; in a beautiful home in Parrish. Russ is an avid tennis player and attributes his youthful appearance to his athleticism and to Lady Sue.

Joanne Thank you for sharing 54 years of your life with me.

Chanters by Milt Thoene, 33°, mthoene@juno.com Happy Saint Patrick’s day!! Dream each day as if you are going to live forever. Live each day as if you were going to die today. — Jimmy Dean Well, the 2009-2010 season for the Chanters has ended. It was a short season, but we did enjoy doing the “gigsâ€? we did have. The last one was the Potentates Rededication Service at St. Margaret of Scotland Episcopal Church on Clark Road East. We had 12 Chanters, and as many Lady Song Birds, there to sing and lead the hymns and songs that were part of the service. There was an excellent turnout of nobles and their ladies in support of our Potentate, Ill. Sir Don Vos at this wonderful service. It is too bad more nobles don’t attend these services. We should all do our best to support the activities of our Sahib Shrine as well as the individual unit

activities as we progress through another active year. Remember, the success of one reflects upon the success of the whole and the success of the whole depends upon the success of each unit and the support of all nobles. Our Divan can’t do it all so let’s get behind them and give them the support you would want from the nobility if you were in their positions. After all, remember Ill. Sir Don has always been a strong supporter of the Chanters unit. Finally, let us pray for great things in our nation and the world; and an early and safe return of our armed forces and stability in the world. “Bear one another’s burdens and thus fulfill the law of God. Galatians 6:2 Happy March Birthday to Chanter Don Anderson “Until next time, may your life’s journey be filled with encouragement for one another as we walk daily with our Creator.

T

he Shrine year has jolted to life for the Sahib Shrine Clowns with appearances at the EastWest Shriners Football Game festivities in Orlando in mid-January, and a long series of planning and rehearsals for our February 25, 26, and 27 Shrine Circus, punctuated by a preview run through at the Thursday, January 28, Shriner’s luncheon.

Making the Orlando trip were clowns Butch “Sparky Power, Joe “Boogie Humphreys, Rocky “Cookie Kearney, Rick “Sliver Taylor, Al “Corny Cobb, Anthony “Sparkles Vignocchi and Phil “Mitch Mitchell. Clown ladies Judy Humphries and Janet Power accompanied the clowns and happily painted faces for the children on hand for the game.

SAHIB REPORTER The circus skits were previewed for the Sahib nobility at the packed noon luncheon on January 28, with two skits directed by Phil Mitchell, PP, the clown’s Clowning Director for 2010. “Bones is a clown frolic designed to make the circus crowd roar with laughter, as an ailing circus clown refuses to work and the boss is having none of it. After a series of failed medical remedies are applied, the “sick clown suddenly springs to life and rushes to work after a pair of “doctors enter the ring with a large syringe and a puttering chain saw. The other skit pokes fun at a hapless clown, “J.C. Penny, who loses all of his clothes to cavorting fellow clowns.

March 2010

After the nobility was treated to the skits, the clowns cavorted with the gathered lunching Shriners, and a great time was had by all, especially our new Potentate Ill. Sir Don Vos. Newly elected “Boss Clown Butch “Sparky Powers is hard at work planning a clown-worked garage sale, and a possible musical entertainment event at Sahib Shrine. After the circus, the clowns hope to settle in for a focused period of Clown Unit improvements under the leadership of Boss Clown Butch. Check out a few photos of the clowns in action on page 16. Nice job, you Joeys! That’s all folks.

job well done to all Greeters and Greeterettes who were able to work the Sahib Shrine Circus. Our Annual Picnic will be held at Oakwood Manor on April 17 from noon to 5:00 p.m. We hope the weather is warm and sunny. All that attended last year really enjoyed the affair. Birthdays for March: Dave Dickerson and Austin Pickering. We will also have another outing at the Golden Apple Dinner Theater in May. It will be a matinee show (more info next month.)

We are always looking for good men to join the Greeters. If you wish to join the Prestige Unit, please see any member for an application. After seven years as Assistant Recorder and twelve years as elected Recorder for a total of 19 years of service with Sahib, our own Bill Batten is back to active participation in the Greeters. He will be greeting you at the door on different occasions. Welcome back, Bill. To all Greeters who are ill: You are in our thoughts and prayers. Have a quick recovery! The Luck of the Irish Finding a four-leaf clover The wearing of the green Kissing the blarney stone Blarney Stone The Blarney Stone is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence. The legend says that an old woman cast a spell on the stone to reward the king who had saved her from drowning. Kissing the stone while the spell gave the king the ability to speak sweetly and convincingly. It’s difficult to reach the stone. Kissers have to lie on their backs and backward or downward, holding iron bars for support. — Author unknown Remember, “we ride so that children can walk.”

hat a great start for the New Year. Events are happening faster than we can keep track of them. It is great to see Sahib being such a busy temple. Ill. Sir Don Vos just seems to inspire everyone with his smile and enthusiasm. The Oriental Band wishes Noble Bill Batten and Lady Jean the very best for the coming years. His retirement party as Sahib’s Recorder (15 years) was great and well attended.

Ill. Sir Don Vos and Lady Carol were radiant at the Potentate’s Ball. The O.B. was proud to have been part of both festivities. As always, the “Great Sahib Oriental Band “had a large contingent of our members participate in the “Hospital Days” project. This one worthy and necessary cause needs our involvement every year. It is also gratifying to hear all those comments about what . . .continued on page 25

our Shriners Hospitals for Children do for children with special health care needs. As mentioned in the last Reporter, the O.B. is planning to spruce up their old uniforms. Many good ideas were put forth and it looks like we are moving in the right direction. We do have an open invitation to ALL our Shrine Brothers to come and visit us, practice with us and possibly join our band. We have plenty of instruments to choose from drums, horns, tambourines and a whole slew of other exotic music

makers. There is no need to be able to read notes; we will teach you. We do participate in most parades, Shrine picnics, ceremonials and other Shrine functions. We also travel to others parts of the country to participate in Imperial sessions and the “All Florida” fantasies. The name of the game is “Fun and Fellowship.” GIVE IT A TRY! he Rusty Mason Reunion which was held on Wednesday, January 27 was a huge success. The numbers were greater than the prior year, and lots of new faces were in the crowd. We had representatives from the Divan, York Rite and Scottish Rite in attendance that evening also. We asked for a show of hands on all who were not members of each of the appending bodies which provided the representatives with a great opportunity to talk further. So here’s hoping we were successful in motivating those ‘rusty brethren’ and prepared them enough to feel confident and ready to attend your local Blue Lodge, perhaps even join our other organizations too. Our guest speaker for the night was Lisa Tsotsos, the administrator of our Masonic Home of Florida. It was a very informative talk indeed. We learned much about the process for admission and some great updates on the residents and the first lady’s charity.

We will be having an appreciation dinner for our hard working brothers in the Blue Lodge, also referred to as the Mason’s Night on the 5th Tuesday of March with dinner at 6:30 p.m. It is an opportunity to introduce these brethren to the Shrine and possibly entice them to join. Visiting our Blue Lodges in the district will continue to be a main theme of the unit. We hope to provide assistance wherever we can and continue to strengthen that link between the Shrine and our active Blue Lodge members. So, don’t forget! If your lodge is shorthanded for an upcoming degree, you can always reach out to the Past Masters Unit, and we will do our best to help out. Take care, and God Bless. Note: Any Past Master who is also a member of Sahib Shrine is eligible to join this unit. Please feel free to call me on (941) 232-1494 or email me at <dotbat@go.com> if you have any questions.

his is a message from your Provost Guard brothers. Our membership has been dwindling to a very low number. From a membership of 30 a few years ago to recently (Nov. 16) 16 and only 10 are able to perform their duties for the Shrine. We are asking our Sahib brothers, even though they may belong to other units and clubs, to consider joining the Provost Guard as well. Our duties include the policing of Shrine temple and functions as requested by our Potentate and

members of the Divan. Other duties include the Shrine Circus, Pancake Breakfast, Banjo Band, Rededication Service, Hospital Days, Imperial visits and the County Fair to name a few. As an added incentive, the Provost Guard supplies your uniform cap, Fez strip, shirt, jacket, name plate badge and whistle. Our annual dues are $15. We look forward to you joining the Provost Guard Unit.

y the time, you read this article we will only have one month left to sell Money Mania tickets. Our budget for this year is $21,000 for Money Mania as a major fundraiser for the temple. I hope we come closer than 2009 when we had to institute a cash stimulus to meet the budget. I wish the clubs and units luck in their selling efforts. Talk to your friends and neighbors. I have been working on advertising for our upcoming Temple Band concert on Friday, March 19, at 7:00 p.m. in Sahib’s Main Hall. We would like this to be a rousing success, since our Band is playing as a major fundraiser for Sahib. These are the type of events that all nobles should participate in; come out and support your Band and your Shrine.

Our Pipes and Drums Pub night held on February 19 in our main hall at 6:00 p.m. will have been completed by this time. I hope it too was a rousing success as 90% of these proceeds benefit the Shrine. Many of our clubs and units work hard at various benefits and contribute heavily to the monetary success of our Shrine. The least we can do is support them by our attendance and ticket purchases. To all those nobles and ladies who find enjoyment offered by our units and clubs, thank you. Our Potentates Reception will also have passed and we hope it was very pleasant for Ill. Sir Donald Vos and his Lady Carol. Attend your Blue Lodge, make friends, secure membership and keep the Shrine rolling in a positive direction.

hat a wonderful attendance for Ill. Sir Don and Lady Carol Vos, at the “Potentates’ Ball,” decorations and music turned the main hall into a wonderland of beauty. The visit by Imperial Potentate, Ill. Sir Jack H. Jones was definitely an honor and his visit enjoyed by all in attendance. There is no doubt in my mind that, January and February, set the music to be followed in 2010. Potentate Ill. Sir Don announced his motto, “Fun, Fellowship and Family”! WE CAN DO! If you are wondering about how to spend your week, pick a project or three from the Sahib calendar. For instance, BINGO has entered the third year, under the direction of Ed Luff, with the crowd of

happy and satisfied players continuing to arrive, some picking out their seat prior to 9:00 a.m. If you or your lady like to play BINGO, you are bound to have a great day. If you would like to help, we have a constant need for workers and would appreciate your support. This is a Sahib Shriners Fundraiser. A great assignment I have this year, is Divan liaison for Gulf, Manatee and Venice Shrine clubs! It is my intention to attend numerous meetings and events for each of these fine Sahib Shrine clubs. Let us work on member attendance, harmony with our Brother, and recruiting new members! Let us get our ladies anxious to attend events and show our support for their programs!

A Night to Remember by Bill Batten, Recorder Emeritus, batten1@juno.com

F

riday, January 29, 2010 is a night that I will long remember. In addition to a very fine seafood buffet at our Shrine, the nobility had a recognition night for me upon my retirement as their Recorder. I had professionally retired and located in Sarasota in the spring of 1990. Shortly thereafter, I met Win Naselroad, my predecessor as Recorder, and asked if there was something I could do to help fill in my free time. Little did I know that this would soon become a full-time job. I started assisting in the office, where the long-time administrative assistant, Barbara Thornson, was the “work horse” of the Shrine. Computers were the new thing, and Barbara would have nothing to do with them. They were big, cumbersome and very slow. No hard drives, programs and data were retained on small record sized disks. My, how things have changed! I was very pleased that over 200 nobles and ladies were in attendance for this dinner and event. I had expected a “Roast” that evening, but it did not come to pass! Ill. Sir Don Vos made some flattering remarks,

and Past Potentates Oscar Cloutier, Dale LaBell, Edward Phillips and Ken Gerard, Sr. also made very complimentary comments about my years of serving our nobility. My long-time friend, and fellow Noble, Joe Pegoraro, also spoke about our years together at the Shrine. I have been very fortunate to have met so many wonderful nobles and ladies here and across the country. Life-long friendships have developed over the years, and these will not be forgotten. I truly enjoyed serving our nobility, our philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children, our clubs and units and the Imperial Council as Recorder of Sahib Shriners. I will continue to assist our Shrine in any way that I can. I served as Assistant Recorder for seven years and Recorder for twelve years; many memories are stored in the nineteen years of service. However, my most special memory of them all will be “The night of January 29, 2010.”

We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

eing 94 years old doesn’t mean Cheviot, Ohio resident Jack Abel is slowing down. In fact, he’s kept his volunteer commitment to Shriners Hospitals for Children—Cincinnati for more than 20 years and has no intention of stopping. “I really enjoy working with the people here at the hospital,” said Abel, who has been a member of Syrian Shriners in Cincinnati for more than 45 years and a volunteer at the hospital since 1991. “It keeps me young and active. I never miss a day!” As a volunteer, Abel rides with a hospital driver, helping to bring children to the hospital for outpatient treatment and admissions, and volunteers in the outpatient clinic, placing identification labels on medical charts. “I became interested in volunteering at the hospital when my cousin began

volunteering there and told me how much he got out of it,” said Abel. “My favorite part about volunteering at Shriners Hospitals is getting to see the children and working along side the friendly staff. I believe my cousin was right; it is a very rewarding place to volunteer.” The staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children— Cincinnati enjoys working with Abel and appreciates his help. “Jack is dedicated and loves being around the staff and the patients,” said Cindy Foote, R.N., a nurse in the outpatient clinic. “He is willing to help us out in any way that he can.” Abel recently celebrated his 94th birthday with the hospital staff. Around The Craft: Further Light of Masonry by Jerry Goacher, KCCH, joy.jer@verizon.net

...we sometimes lose focus on the greater scope of Masonry outside our temple walls.

n our busy schedule about the Shrine and the fulfilling of the many obligations upon us in the support of our Shrine’s activities, we sometimes lose focus on the greater scope of Masonry outside our temple walls. The recent “Rusty Mason Night” sponsored by the Sahib Shriners, is an example of how life’s many responsibilities along with the ordinary bumps in the road of life detour us from something we hope all Masons have long loved, but many have lost for a while—the road we traveled to the A.A.O.N.M.S. Today, new Masons, many of whom have already joined the Shriners, are also looking for the additional “Light in Masonry” provided by appended bodies such as the Scottish and York Rites of Freemasonry, Tall Cedars, while many find the time to participate with their ladies in the Order of the Eastern Star, the Amaranth and the White Shrine. Granted they are probably not giving quite as much time to the Shrine as others choose to do, but all of these fit in the Great Family of Masonry and are equal in their own scope of things. Last month’s article spoke of many of our nobles who have not only joined, but stay active in the ritual work and activities of these orders. The vast majority of us joined one or both of the “Rites” because in the “old ways” it was required to become a Shriner. Our forefathers of the Mystic Shrine felt that this was an important preparation in the lives of a Mason to become a Shriner, and so we did

what we did because we had to, anxious to place on our heads the red fez of this order. Many of us never became active or even went back to participate in these “Rites.” Now, because there is no longer a requirement to belong, some have dropped out, withdrawing their desperately needed financial support, and others because of they can no longer afford to belong. For those who still pay their dues, or wish to be reinstated, there are some great opportunities to go back and renew the lessons and rituals now forgotten and mingle with Brethren of the past. The York Rite Bodies that serve the areas of Palmetto, Bradenton, Sarasota, Venice, North Port and Englewood join forces every spring and fall with the Tampa York Rite Bodies to participate in a two weekend festival. The spring dates this year for the York Rite “Festival” are the first two Saturdays in April held at the York Rite Center in Tampa. The Scottish Rite Spring “Reunion” will be held at the Tampa Scottish Rite Masonic Center the first two Saturdays in May. This center, housing the largest and oldest Consistory in Florida, is a beautiful place to view the 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite, many of which are conferred by our own nobles. For either of these events, contact this writer or an active Brother for more information. We would love to provide rides and have you revisit to share with us in the “Further Light of Masonry.”

most significant charity sponsored by Commanderies of Knights Templar is that of Holy Land Pilgrimage. The purpose is to strengthen Christian ministry by providing an intensive educational and spiritual study seminar / historical and cultural immersion experience for full time, ordained ministers in the form of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Our experience tells us how much the opportunity to “walk where Jesus walked” can positively affect the preaching, teaching and spirituality of Christian ministers. The plan is to immerse selected Christian ministers in the land, the sights, the sounds, the history and the cultures of Israel, past and present. Specific guidelines are followed in the process of selecting nominated ministers. Ministers who fall outside of these guidelines will rank lower in the pool of those nominated. An outline of these guidelines follows:

The minister never traveled to Israel before. Fully ordained ministers (copy of Ordination Certificate or judicatory documentation must accompany the application). Youth coordinators, program directors, lay pastors, etc. rarely have ordination status. Serving in full time ministry, currently; this means that they are employed by the church full time and it is their primary source of income. Having served at least four full years in full time ministry; having at least ten years of full time service yet to go. Be of good physical health (if the idea of walking a brisk mile or more—uphill, nonstop, with steps—is a concern, this may not be the program from which this person would benefit). Be willing to travel with an ecumenical group of other ministers from many denominations and religious groups, male and female.

Scottish Rite – Acacia by Lou Ortt, PP, 33°, lhortt@verizon.net

T

he sprig of acacia, which we see planted at the grave of our Grand Master Hiram Abif represents three distinct ideas; Initiation, Innocence and Immortality. Initiation may well be the original meaning. In many ancient initiations and ceremonies there was a plant peculiar to each which played a major role in the celebration of the rights and became a symbol of that initiation. For example, lettuce was used in the mysteries of Adonis, lotus was used in the Brahman rites of India and later adopted by the Egyptians, mistletoe was used by the Druids. In all these rites the sacred plant was a symbol of initiation, resurrection to a future life and immortality of the soul. Second, acacia is a symbol of innocence. In Greek “akakia” signifies both the plant and the moral quality of innocence or purity of life, being free from sin. In this sense, the acacia refers to him over whose solitary grave it was placed and whose virtuous conduct, integrity and fidelity have been examples to the craft the members should attempt to emulate. The third meaning is immortality. There was an ancient custom for mourners to carry in their hands

a sprig of evergreen and deposit it in the grave of the deceased. The Hebrews always planted a sprig of acacia at the head of the grave of a departed friend. It is said that the custom started as a result of Hebrew laws that did not allow bodies to be buried inside the walls of the city and the religious leaders were prohibited from crossing a grave. It became necessary to mark graves and acacia was used for that purpose. Acacia has always been valued for the sacred purpose for which it is used. Its wood was used in the sanctuary of the tabernacle and in the Holy Ark. Masons appropriated this sacred plant to teach an important truth for all who enter the lodge. It represents the transitory nature of human life and, the perpetual renewal of the evergreen, the continuation of the spiritual soul: this reminding us that we have an immortal part within us that shall survive the grave. In the 14th degree the acacia is presented on the left side of the cordon as a symbol of immortality and should remind us of our initiation as well as of eternal life.

. . .continued from page 12 Motor Corps Shrine Club at the Shrine between 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. and buy a hand or several hands from our beautiful girls and start drawing your cards. You draw one card at the Shrine, then ride your bike or drive to the next stop and draw another card, and then to the next stop and so on until you return back to the Shrine. Don’t want to drive? That’s fine. You can also draw all your cards at once at the Shrine. About 1:00 p.m., the great band the Jam Band will start playing and we’ll start drawing the many door prizes that your poker hand gives you a chance to win. There will also be prizes for the best and worst poker hands and at the end of the day; we’ll have the drawing for the Harley Wagon of Cheer. It’s a party, it benefits Sahib (all profits go to Sahib this year) and it’s open to everyone. See you there! For those who follow the sordid story of the Motor Corps monkey, there are tails to tell. First, our Buddy ‘Stumpy’ had some issues with his bike last year when a number of the guys rode up to Kentucky. It turns out that Stumpy couldn’t unlock his bike and had to ride on the back of Jay (The Badge) Spenla’s bike for quite a few miles. Now, for those of you non-bikers, there is a term for riding on the back of someone else’s bike… it’s called “Riding Bitch” and the Motor Corps gave Stumpy it’s new “Bitch” monkey. She’s beautiful, nice and pink and looks great on Stumpy’s bike. The question becomes, who was the last guy we saw riding on the back of a bike and does he (even if he might be a Potentate) deserve the Bitch monkey? Stay tuned.

Ken (Doc) Shipley has been sporting our regular monkey (you know, the one you get when you drop the bike,) but it will soon be traveling on. The word is Jeff (Snowman) Young dumped his at Cocoa Beach while attending the Florida Association of Shrine Motor Corps meeting a couple of times and Gary (JP) Fields dumped his new 1997 Arctic White bike about the same time. We are still investigating the time lines to see who dropped it last. Birthdays in March will be celebrated (or grumbled about) by yours truly, Bill (Balloon Man) Furst, Deana Whip Nowe, Jean (Red) Ragsdale, Jerry Reister Lynn Rigby and Connie Spenla, Anniversaries will definitely be celebrated by Doug (Doug Dog) Mitchell and Dianna and Dee (Deeablo) Campbell and Marcia. If you see any of these good people, give them your best. That’s it for this month. Until next time, keep the bugs out of your teeth and the rubber side down.

Page 45 No. 110. Current District 27 Deputy Grand Master Gene Jeffers was present. The evening having been spent in great harmony, friendship and Brotherly Love, the Worshipful Master gaveled this Rusty Mason Lodge of Instruction closed for the year in very short form, even shorter than the Grand Master can do it, and all Brothers retired to the back of the main hall for light refreshments. In personal conversation with several out-of-state Brothers, each agreed that the evening was well spent and each wished such a school of instruction existed in his state of residence.

. . .continued from page 49 2010 Rusty Mason Reunion receives a five-star rating from State of Florida inspection teams. Lodges of Instruction were also opened and closed in the Fellowcraft Degree and the Master Mason Degree. Sahib Potentate Ill. Sir Don Vos presented a few words and stated that this very valuable school of instruction would continue to grow and be held at Sahib Shrine. All Lodges in Masonic District 27 were fully represented except Palmetto Lodge

anuary 27, 2010 at Sahib Shrine, the 16th Rusty Mason Lodge of Instruction was opened at 7:32 p.m., in short abbreviated form, in the Entered Apprentice Degree. The Lodge being secure, officer chairs properly filled, and duly tiled, PDDGM and sitting Worshipful Master for this evening Gerald E. Goacher gaveled the Lodge open for work and instruction. The Great Lights were properly opened, displayed, explained and closed for each Degree. Prayer was given by Lou Ortt, Past Potentate of Sahib Shrine, and Past Master Rocky Kearney was Master of Ceremonies for the evening and kept the program upbeat and lively. There were 127 Master Masons present, with 44 of those being Brothers from outside the 27th Masonic District and mainly snow bird Brothers. Sitting Worshipful Masters and senior officers from the District 27 Lodges sat in the chairs and demonstrated the appropriate work for each of the three Degrees.

Prior to the opening of a Rusty Mason Lodge of Instruction, the guest speaker for the evening, Lisa Tsotsos, NHA, the Administrator of the Grand Lodge of Florida Masonic Home presented a 22 minute-long briefing on the current status and programs at the Masonic Home. Some of the interesting points she put forth were there are residents now from the young age of 74 up to one resident at 106 years, there is a set of sisters who do not want to be housed next to each other or even together, the home is nowhere near capacity with plenty of room for new residents, and the 27 acre property sitting on Coffee Pot Bayou in a very desirable part of St. Petersburg is now worth its weight in gold and almost priceless. There is also an active Masonic Lodge on the property. Pull Tabs for Shriner’s Hospitals The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of December 10, 2009, they have collected 65,743 lbs., for a total of $31,275.13 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/ unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Call:
