As you know, Potentate Bill Balkwill has made the decision to publish The Sahib Reporter solely as an electronic document, rather than as a print and online publication. Printing a monthly newsletter involves a lot of cost in personnel, time and money. Ed and Wanda Firquin know this, as did Gary Schweinshaupt before them. We all owe a debt of gratitude to them and all the contributors and assistants who have made The Sahib Reporter the quality product it is. In case you don’t know, “The Reporter won an Honorable Mention in the Imperial Shrine Dromedary Awards every year from 1996 to 2007, plus 2012, and took first place in our category in 1998, 1999 and 2011.” – www.SahibShrine.org That’s quite an accomplishment. My role is to help alleviate some of the cost burden (personnel/time/dollars) associated with a print publication. You may be wondering what makes printing a monthly newsletter so expensive? Here’s a brief analysis: • Editor to oversee entire production from gathering copy, arranging pages, overseeing advertisements, etc. • Graphic Designer to type the articles, create the advertisements and lay out the pages so that everything fits together in a logical and pleasing format. • Printer to properly print and bind the book. • Circulation to prepare and mail each booklet and maintain a viable subscribers list—especially difficult when many readers have both winter and summer homes. By following an online-only model, the print and mailing costs are immediately eliminated. My strength lies in the graphic design area, as well as having the computer skills necessary to effectively publish and distribute the book online. I’ve been involved in publishing since I was a teen, working on my high school and college newspapers, then working summers at my hometown paper. My first “real” job was at a Chicago weekly, which also produced a magazine. Eventually I worked for a software company which focused on—what else?—catalog publishing. Most recently, I was editor of an Illinois historical society’s member magazine. I still maintain their website. This digital publication will build upon the good work started by my predecessors, and—hopefully—continue to make the Sahib Nobles and Ladies proud of their Shrine newsletter. Becky Zeissler ON THE COVER: Ask Potentate Bill Balkwill about his epic adventure with a circus camel from a few years back. This fellow from last year’s Sahib Shrine Circus seems to want to kiss and make up for the folly of his friend.

Notes from your Divan

Potentate’s Message Dear Nobles and Ladies, The remnants of Hurricane Irma swept north through Florida on Monday Sept. 11, leaving behind a trail of debris, flooding and power outages after the storm roared up the state’s Gulf Coast and brought its drenching rainfall and battering winds on Sarasota. More than half the population of Florida is out of power and our Shrine was one of the places without power. At the time this was written, I had received no word of a Noble or Lady in distress. Lady Gail and I battened down the house with plywood and rode it out. We had a friend who needed to get off Longboat Key with her dogs, so she stayed with us and we all survived. All our neighbors helped one another and we got Riviera Drive all boarded up and then had a hurricane party in the street. I checked on the Shrine and we had no power as of Monday, September 11, 2017. Speaking of September 11, let’s not forget those who lost their lives on 911. Thousands of family members, survivors and rescuers gathered for the hours-long reading of victims’ names at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed when terrorist-piloted planes hit those three sites. It’s hard to believe 16 years have passed since a tragedy that “still feels like yesterday.” I remember that day very well as President Bush was in Sarasota. I have a picture of the President and me in the early morning on Sept. 11, 2001 in my office (you’re more than welcome to come by and see it). This is also a day to THANK our first responders and members of the military for their dedication to 911, and for their help with the two hurricanes that just occurred. God bless them. Take a look at the calendar for upcoming events, we have some good ones and hope to see you there (don’t forget the circus). Remember to support your Shrine and keep a child in your heart! Fraternally Yours,

William “Bill” Balkwill Sahib Potentate 2017

Chief Rabban Del Rawlinson, drawlinson@comcast.net

Clubs and units are the central forces to temple life. Here at Sahib we have long enjoyed member support of club and unit activities. That, in turn, contributed to support of temple activities. However, I feel that this support has dwindled to the point where some units no longer play an active role or have folded. Age, sickness and dwindling membership notwithstanding, could it be that there is no longer as much interest in our traditional units? Certainly, key service units are still needed such as Aides, Greeters and Transportation. A variety of performing units such as Clowns, Bands and motorized units are still key to temple life. Also, the Hillbillies and outlying clubs are there to accommodate all. However, do we need other outlets to accommodate changing times, demographics and interests? If you think so, please talk with your unit or club officers and ask them to pass on your suggestions at the Club/Unit Head Meetings. On the other hand, attend the meetings yourself and make your own presentation.

SAHIB REPORTER

Page 5

Notes from your Divan The future of our units and clubs, their councils, and this temple are in the hands of all our elected officers and their dedication and leadership. Communications here at Sahib could be better. This is despite all the different networking used to get the word out to members. All these attempts are for naught if members do not read the notices on the Sahib Website, weekly web letters, Twitter notices, Yahoo groups, Reporter articles, flyers passed out at the Thursday luncheons, or listen to the announcements at Stated Meetings or Club/Unit Head Meetings. â€œâ€ŚDo we need other outlets to accommodate changing times, demographics and interests?â€?

Too many times side conversations are being held while speakers have the podium and key items are missed by many in attendance. In addition, poor attendance at Club/Unit Head Meetings and Unit/Club Council Meetings does not help. I hope that attendance will improve in the future and we will all do a better job of passing on information to others. Until next month, be kind to one another.

Sahib Shrine Circus Paul R. Zeissler, Chairman, przcook2000@yahoo.com

It’s getting closer and closer to the th

35 Annual Sahib Shrine Circus. This year the Circus will be November th 6 and 7th in Palmetto at the Manatee Convention Center. We will be showcasing the award-winning Garden Brothers Circus for the second year. The Big Top atmosphere will be enormous as will be the fun had by all the audience and Shriners involved. There will be animal and aerial acts to titillate our audiences—popcorn and animal rides to please everyone and make the whole event something everyone will enjoy and remember forever. The Circus will be featuring our Clown Unit for one “In Ring” act, plus all the autographs our Clowns and the kiddies can handle when our guys are not performing in the ring. We need volunteers for all sorts of things from member pre-Circus sign-ins, to popcorn making for the School Kids Day on Tuesday morning—we expect more than 1,000 kids to show up for that free performance—to ushers and parking lot attendants for the fully paid performances. Contact me if you have ideas for your group’s involvement in the Circus’ success.

I am also looking forward to the full participation of the Manatee Shrine Club since this event will once again be in our own backyard in Palmetto. I look forward to the inclusion of the Oriental Band, the Motor Corps, Legion of Honor and of course the Divan and fun-loving Potentate. New ideas for our new location and the th 35 Anniversary are very welcome. Keep your eyes glued to our dedicated circus site, www.sahibshrinecircus.com/ or you can follow us (and be sure to “like” us) at www.Facebook.com/SahibShrineCircus. Hope to see everyone ringside to make this another success for our Shrine. By the way, don’t forget to get your 2017 Circus Ringmaster or Circus Booster pin! See me or Sue at the front desk. You can also order by downloading our order form at the circus website: https://www.sahibshrinecircus.com/pin-sales

October already. Where have the months gone. In about five more weeks we go off Daylight Savings Time and then the days will be even shorter. But I digress. The Motor Corps has been busy since our last report. Read on. We hope you attended one of our Bikerbilly nights back in July and August. While we only averaged about 23 tickets per Thursday night, we did have a lot of fun and fellowship. And as usual, we could not have done it without the help of our ladies. We really appreciate all our fellow Nobles and friends who supported us this year. Since our last column, the Motor Corps has added one new member. We welcome Roger Moore (007) to our ranks. Roger rides a Harley Davidson CVO Ultra. His lady is Penny. Roger is a member of Venice Lodge No. 301. We are now at 31 strong. By the time you read this, the Fall Shrine Ceremonial will be history. Hope you were there and saw our motorcycles parade around the building. We are optimistic that at least one of the new Nobles will be riding with us in the future. The National Hillbilly Convention will be held at Sahib Shrine in a couple of weeks. Several Motor Corps members are also members of the Hillbillies. We know they will have a great time. The Sun Fiesta Parade in Venice is just weeks away on October 21st. Not sure if or how many of our members will be

participating in that parade. It seems there are at least two Masonic-related events that same day. The annual fall spaghetti dinner prepared by the Motor Corps is just weeks away. This year it will be held on Sunday, November 19th from 3:30-6:30pm. That is just four days before Thanksgiving, so if you don’t want to think about eating turkey and dressing, this could be your chance to enjoy some great Italian food. Tickets will be $10 in advance; $11 at the door; 12 and under are free. Our spaghetti dinners include salad, rolls, and wine and it’s all the spaghetti you can eat. See any Motor Corps member for tickets or check your mailbox a few weeks before. We have a few birthdays and some anniversaries to report in October. Birthdays this month are: Lady Terri Pullman on the 3rd, Mick Vorbeck (Alley Cat) on the 13th, Lady Tessa Robbins on the 14th, Don Brown (Honey Bear) on the 26th, Bruce Porter (Wizard) on the 28th, Lady Tracy Iversen (Skippy) on the 29th, and Frank Metheny (Dealer) on the 31st. We have three anniversaries in October: Darren th (Schmoozer) and Lady Gina on the 5 , Rich (Big Dawg) and Lady Tessa on the 11th, and Hampton Crimi (Monk) and Lady Nicole on the 22nd. “We welcome Roger Moore (007) to our ranks. Manatee Shrine Club Russell Sexton, PM, President, drsexton45@gmail.com

Thanks to all 32 members and st

ladies who attended our September 1 meeting. Several of our summer vacation members were in attendance and we expect more returning members over the next several months as our snowbirds begin their flight to Florida. Our meeting was held at the Shrine Center with a wonderful meal of either meatloaf or grilled chicken on a Caesar salad. The speaker was our own Ron LeVene who delivered a riveting account of his personal experience as a nuclear missile control officer, and a description of our country’s missile readiness capabilities. Our thanks go to Paul Kline who accepted the invitation of the Board of Directors to serve out the term of 1st Vice President. Paul indicated his willingness to continue as club president for 2018. Officers for the 2018 year will be nominated in November, elected in December and installed in January 2018. Active Manatee Shrine Club members interested in volunteering for the Board of Directors should contact Russ Sexton to get on the ballot. The social for September has been moved to Tuesday, October 3rd. The social is a 10 a.m. tour of the Florida Aquarium in Tampa along with a 1:00 p.m. Dolphin Cruise on Tampa Bay. Lunch is on your own at one of the refreshment areas within the aquarium. Cost is $36.95 per person to be paid at the gate. We need 15 persons to register for this social to receive the group rate and we need to arrive at 10 a.m. as a

group. Please contact Russ Sexton with your reservation order. Over the summer, many club members volunteered to serve at the concession stands at LECOM Park, home of the Bradenton Marauders. To date over $12,000 earned at the park has been given to the Shrine Center for needed upgrades in kitchen equipment. An appreciation dinner for all those who worked at the ball park has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 24th at 5:30 p.m. at the Shrine Center. The dinner meal will be prime rib or Chicken Marsala as main entrees, mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables, rolls, side salad, dessert and coffee. A cash bar is available. The cost per meal is $10 for those members who worked at the ball park and $30 for all guests. “The social … is Tuesday, October 3rd. [It] is a 10 a.m. tour of the Florida Aquarium in Tampa along with a 1:00 p.m. Dolphin Cruise on Tampa Bay.”

The October 6th regular meeting will return to the Peridia Golf & Country Club. The hot meal includes a house salad, rolls, roast turkey, mashed potatoes, and vegetable. The cold meal is a Caribbean salad with grilled chicken. Dessert is a brownie sundae. Our guest speaker is Joan Kramer, President of The Campaign Against Human Trafficking. To make reservations for the meal, please contact Russ Sexton at drsexton45@gmail.com or (941) 773-7280.

The Clowns want to say hello to our new editor of The Reporter, Becky Zeissler, and say thank you to our former editors Ed and Wanda Firquin, for doing such an outstanding job the past few years. It was with great disappointment that the clown calliope was not present at the Englewood parade, but when the 'ole' buggy would not start, we could not get enough man power to push it along the parade route. The bad part was that we just spent money and two days with the mechanic to get it running. We hope to see you at the next parade. The clowns had another fun day at our local Fun & Sun on September 2nd. In fact, we were so well received during our past four shows that they invited us back for a show in October. This performance should really be fun since we will be performing during their FrightFest Weekend.”

You can see some pictures of our show from September 2nd on this page. Once again enjoy the picture of Joe "Boogie" Humphreys trying to find his Cinderella. With that smile, he may have found her. Past Masters Gary Wonning, cmdr07@gmail.com

A few years ago, at the weekly Thursday luncheon, a visiting Noble from Massachusetts introduced himself and related how he was ninety-three years old, a World War II and Korean War veteran and how he was concerned about the direction the country was headed. As he walked back to his seat, he stopped, put his hand on my shoulder and with a tear in his eye, said, “I just don’t want to leave this world in the shape it’s in.” Nobles, America is in dire need of our help. Let's all join together and put America back on track in memory of that Noble. That was four or five years ago, I’m sure he has passed on. Regardless, if we are Shriners, Masons, Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, DeMolay, etc., we are in the same boat and on the same team. The Past Masters are a Sahib Shrine unit composed of Past Masters living in the area, part-time or full-time. We act as ambassadors and visit the various lodges in the district, performing degree assistance when needed.

Recently, we assisted in checking dues cards at the annual Grand Master’s visit to District 23. We hold a Rusty Mason degree yearly, to assist brothers who haven't attended lodge for a while and may be a little “rusty” in remembering the required signs and passes to enter a tiled lodge. This year the Rusty Mason degree will be held on January 17, 2018 at the Sahib Shrine Center. We have a table at the Thursday luncheon located in the northeast corner of the main hall. The Past Masters meet every fourth Monday, except December, at the Sahib Shrine at 7 p.m. If you are a Past Master of any Masonic “Nobles, America is in Lodge, from any state, come dire need of our help. early, enjoy the best tacos Let’s all join together and chili in all of creation, and put America back good camaraderie, and join on track….” with us in making this a better world to live in.

Masonic Digest / Scottish Rite Casey A. Fletcher, 32° KCCH, dow@srtampa.org

Plutarch of Chaeronea (45-120 CE) was a prolific Greek writer, philosopher and Roman citizen. He is best remembered for his biographical writing Parallel Lives in which he compares the leadership and character of various Greek and Roman leaders. For example, he compares Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great. The work is not a historical account of their lives, but an examination of their strengths and weaknesses so that all might learn from them. He sought to cultivate civic virtue. Many of his other writings are extant and are collected in Essays. They cover a broad range of topics as can be gleaned from some of the titles, “On Listening,” “On Being Aware of Moral Progress,” “On the Avoidance of Anger,” and “On Contentment.” None of the works are treatises of logical or philosophical rationality. He aims to “coach,” not “convince.” Our ancient brethren were likely influenced by Plutarch. Clearly, they were well-read in both the Volume of Sacred Law and what are now called the “classics.” Plutarch’s works would not have escaped their notice. Professor Ian Kidd (1922-), a fellow of the British Academy, observes that Plutarch’s work is dominated by three themes. The first theme is moral, practical philosophy. He addresses the moral wellbeing of his reader and explores ethical concepts. He sought not to “win” a moral argument, but to “coach” the reader’s development of good character. The second theme is religion and theology. Plutarch had been initiated into the mysteries of Apollo and served as a high priest at the Temple of Delphia. He sought to render philosophy and religion complementary, not adversarial. Interested in the Divine’s role upon the lives of human

beings, he loathed superstition, considering it more dangerous than atheism. Finally, Plutarch encouraged selfdevelopment and espoused life-long learning. Again, his works are not scientific accounts or logic-driven arguments. They are replete with similes, metaphors, symbols and a vividness of illustration. Plutarch taught by telling stories. Practical philosophy, religion, character development, symbolism and story-telling. It all sounds quite familiar to our Masonic work. We can learn much by exploring the formation of our Fraternity and investigating the origins of our rituals (see September article), but to accomplish what “we came here to do,” we might be better served to read, examine and study the “classics” that our ancient brethren read. Plutarch’s works were surely on our brethren’s bookshelves. Our pursuit of Further Light continues at the next Scottish Rite Reunion on October 21st and 28th. Petitions are available at http://tampascottishrite.org. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the second Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. and the regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Our October 9th meeting will be the annual celebration of the Feast of Tishri. This is an open meeting. Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He notes that Plutarch’s writings are an easier read than Professor Kidd’s or Albert Pike’s.

Summer is over and it engulfed September as well. As I rewrite this report, Hurricane Irma is heading our way. We cancelled our September meeting to allow our ladies to make the necessary plans to keep safe during the storm. Our next meeting on October 13th will be exciting as we return to our usual business and prepare for our busy fall schedule to include the Sun Fiesta Parade on October 21, Pancake Breakfast craft table October 2, and our Sunshine Unit Meet (SUM) that we will be hosting in Venice on November 2, 3, and 4. This get together is for units to perform from all the courts in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama. Our theme this year is “Picnic on the Beach” and with her talented skills Mary Fletcher painted a beautiful design for us. The weekend will include meetings, a fun night, a banquet, drills (when each unit performs), and some much-enjoyed social time. Who could forget the men! There will be a men’s hospitality all weekend. Hope to see you there. Due to the storm, our October Ceremonial will be rescheduled to November. There is still time to complete your application and join our wonderful

organization. Our LOSNA ladies would like to have you become a member. Contact me at (941) 284-8119 for information, or ask any of our ladies for a petition. “…it is not belly dancing, per se, but rather an expression of oriental dancing.”

Our Oriental Dancer group is quite large, and as the name states, they perform oriental dances in costumes. Nydia Pease is the directress and creator of their dances. She states that the routines are not hard and it is not belly dancing, per se, but rather an expression of oriental dancing. They practice each Monday at the Scottish Rite Building at 10 a.m. and have their meeting on the third Monday of the month followed by rehearsal. Many of the members get together for lunch after their rehearsal for fun and fellowship. Please continue to keep each other in your prayers and thoughts as we recover from this terrible storm.

Nyla Temple No. 152 Katherine A. Rodd, PQ, Queen, kahr1946@gmail.com The inspiration for this article came from one that I read in a fraternal order magazine and my personal experience. All our lives we plan carefully for our further education, career, family, and retirement. We are in a fraternal organization (whether it be the Shrine, Masonic Lodge, Daughters of the Nile, The Order of the Eastern Star, Ladies Oriental Shrine, etc.). “We all deserve these ceremonies, but forget to let our families know that we are entitled to a fraternal service.”

In so many instances, I have seen how many of these members did not have a fraternal organization service. How sad, for each of the fraternal organizations have beautiful services and it is the organization’s way of fittingly acknowledging their member’s dedication through the years and paying tribute to their fraternal sister or brother. We all deserve these ceremonies, but forget to let our families know that we are entitled to a fraternal service. When my husband passed away, if my step-son and

step-daughter had been making the arrangements for their father, he would not have had a Masonic or Eastern Star service. He was a mason for over 40 years. Throughout the time we were together, he expressed his desire to have a Masonic Service, and that his apron be placed with him. Yes—he also was given and Eastern Star Memorial Service. How appropriate these services were at his passing and it showed those who do not belong to a fraternal organization how dedicated the members are toward each other and treat one another as family. So when planning, please make known your wishes and note contact information to assist your family in carrying out your final instructions. Do not assume it will be done if it is not written. Give your beloved organization the chance to give back to you. Nyla temple is taking orders for fresh balsam decorated wreaths for Christmas. Wreaths will be delivered to the address provided on your order sheet. Cost is $40. Close date is the end of October. Contact Katherine Ann Rodd for an order sheet.
