Potentate-Elect Message

My fellow nobles, Lady Gail and I are deeply honored that you have elected me to serve as your Potentate for the year 2017. I hope to equal the success and great fellowship of my predecessors, but I will need your help to do that. No one man can do it all. Your Divan Officers are committed and determined to face the challenges that must be dealt with to further develop this organization that we all love and cherish. Thank you to the nobility of Sahib for your overwhelming support and confidence. Here at Sahib, membership remains our top priority. I ask each of you to recruit at least one new member. For years, we have said: Replace yourself! Our Strategic Plan will guide us through the next few years to remain one of the best Shrines in the country. Finally, we all became Shriners because we wanted to have fun and help children. Our fraternity is based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. As Shriners, we look beyond ourselves to serve the needs of others, especially children who cannot help themselves. A tremendous amount of time and effort has gone into the Pocket Calendar Book to ensure its accuracy. Deepest thanks to Emeritus Noble Gary Schweinshaupt and Recorder Ed Firquin for their many efforts. We believe an informed Shriner will be an active Shriner. Keep the calendar with you and attend the many functions we schedule each month. As always, the Recorder and our website will have the most up-to-date information. I hope to see all of you at every event, to shake your hand and thank you all for what you do. Have you never noticed I always end my articles by saying: “Remember, support the Shrine and keep a child in your heart?” Our theme this year is “Having Fun While Becoming a Star.” I challenge each of you to become a Star, and be the one who makes a difference in a child’s life. Our hospital system remains “The World’s Greatest Philanthropy.” Visit the hospitals and see the miracles that happen there every day. Remember, you can change the world when you change the life of a child all because you are a Star in the heart of a child.

Fraternally Yours,

William “Bill” Balkwill Sahib Potentate 2017

he new year has arrived and it is welcomed with great anticipation at Sahib. Our Potentate Ill. Sir Bill Balkwill with his First Lady Gail have planned an exciting year for Sahib Shriners, their ladies, friends and our community. There is one important ingredient needed, that is you! It will be a changing year, as our Potentate will ask for support from members, clubs and units to advance and support Sahib. The question is, will you be on board because the “Fire Ball Express” is about to leave the station. This will be a great trip of fun and surprises. I’ve been told one may never know what to expect in 2017. The Divan, club and unit officers for 2017 are now in their respected positions ready to provide services to members which voted them to be leaders in our organization. Just as this has occurred, I

wish to introduce our Administrative Aide Ms. Sue Norton, she is married to a native of Sarasota and with great knowledge of our community she will be a grand asset to our office. She is learning the complex information of Shrinedom to provide you with help when needed. If I may, I wish to be a little personal for the support with my recent medical experience with Bell’s Palsy and for electing me to continue as Recorder for the great Sahib Shrine, I thank you. I will do my best for Sahib and its members. As I said the “Fire Ball Express” with our Engineer Ill. Sir Bill at the throttle we are headed for fun and excitement in 2017. You have the ticket - it’s your membership card, use it and get on board. Remember the child within and I’ll see you around Sahib. 

reetings nobles and ladies and Happy New Year. Now that parades, parties and the FEZtival of Trees and nominations are behind us, it is time to get back to work. I hope that you will continue to get involved and participate in the events of the Shrine. I want to thank everybody for voting for me to be your Chief Rabban. It has been an honor to serve under Ill. Sir Carroll Scribner and First Lady Sandy. Congratulations to Potentate-elect Bill Balkwill and First Lady Gail. Our newly elected officers will need nobles’ support to make

this a successful year. Make an effort to get back into your clubs/units to make 2017 a great year. I am looking forward to helping Sahib Shriners and its nobility to grow and carry on the wonderful traditions at our Shrine. We look forward to many more projects and improvements this year. So, put your Fez on and go volunteer to make this a prosperous year. Until next time, be safe and kind to one another. 

appy New Year fellow nobles. It is 2017. We hope everyone had a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year. For many Christians, the 12 days of Christmas which started on Christmas Day end on the evening of the 5th of January. January 6th then marks the start of the Carnival season. It is also the start of the Mardi Gras season which ends on Fat Tuesday, February 28, 2017. We hope all can enjoy this festive time of year. As promised in last month’s edition, we are pleased to announce our club’s officers for 2017. Serving as president will be Darren Bracken (Schmoozer); Mike Weaver (Biker Mike) was elected vice president. Giles Light (G-man) and Barry Hart (Policyman) were re-elected as secretary and treasurer, respectively. Past President John Hubbard (Hotrod) serves on the board along with Hampton Crimi (Monk) who was elected to a 2-year term. We are also pleased to report that two of our members are elected members of the Divan. Del Rawlinson (Backwards) was elected Chief Rabban and Bruce Porter (Wizard) was elected Assistant Rabban. We now have final numbers of guests served at our Spaghetti Dinner on November 20th. We served 227. That compares with 251 last year. Among our guests this November was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge who was celebrating his 90th birthday. Thanks again to all who attended and supported this event. The Motor Corps has been busy these past few weeks. It seems like there are a lot of activities going on this time of year. We had two white bikes and three colored bikes in the Venice Holiday Parade on November 26th. Eric Bock (Ironman)

and Hampton Crimi (Monk) were at the head of the pack. We did even better for the Sarasota Holiday Parade on December 3rd. Unfortunately, other commitments kept us from participating in the North Port Poinsettia Parade on December 10. We participated in the FEZtival of Trees during the last week in November. Did you notice our motorcycle themed tree? Illustrious Sir Carroll Scribner reports our tree was very popular. One of our members, Mick Vorbeck, received a special honor on December 13th. On that night, he was presented his 55-year pin as a Master Mason from R.W. Barry Hart at Sarasota Lodge No. 147. We congratulate Mick on achieving this recognition. On Saturday, December 17, the Motor Corps and the Widows Sons joined veterans and family members to lay out Christmas wreaths at the Sarasota National Cemetery. It was an impressive sight to see all the motorcycles enroute to the cemetery. The Motor Corps Christmas Party was held at Sahib Shriners on Saturday, December 17. We had a great choice of food entrees and musical entertainment was provided by Taylor & Taylor. Hospitality was great and we all could participate in the spirit of the holiday season. A special recognition to Motor Corps member Scott Steelman (Gray Fox). He will be installed as Worshipful Master of Venice Lodge No. 301 on Saturday, January 7. We only have two birthdays and no anniversaries to report in January. Gary Nickols (Stumpy) will celebrate a birthday on the 18th and Lady Peggy Sue Mitchell on the 31st. 

f you saw either of the parades the end of November down in Venice or the parade the first of December, you will no doubt have seen our new figurehead, namely Karen, who stood right on the front of the float in a beautiful kimono with a genuine geisha hairpiece on. We got a bunch of comments as most people had no clue that the Shrine has this new rule that says we can now welcome new members that are not from the Shrine nor do they have to be male any more. This will make our recruiting easier and everyone can join us if they want. Gender nor race will not make any difference in the future.

Our parading is now finished for several months, so we will now concentrate on the conventions we will be doing in this coming year. My upcoming articles will have some information on members of this group and their work history so you may see how diverse this group really is. We once again invite you to come down to Sahib Shriners any Wednesday night and see and hear this group. We meet at 7:00 p.m. and you are very welcome to join us or just watch. Until the next time, we hope this finds your year starting out well for you. 

Masonic Digest Scottish Rite by Casey A. Fletcher, KCCH, cfletcher@palletone.com

T

he ritual of the Scottish Rite Degrees originated in France during the 1700s, perhaps earlier. During the 1850s, Albert Pike translated and transcribed copies of the French ritual then in the possession of the Supreme Council in Charleston, South Carolina. Pike’s transcriptions can be found in the book “Masonic Rituals and Formulas.” This book is an excellent source for investigating the origins of our modern ritual. Although fascinated with the French ritual, Pike sensed that “their teachings were purposely concealed and obfuscated by their creators.” After much study of comparative religion, history and philosophy he began to revise, expand and develop ritual for use in the United States. Pike’s initial rewrite of the French Ritual is contained in a book “The Magnum Opus or the Great Work.” Freemasonry degrees and symbolism is not quite as static and uniform as commonly asserted; we need only attend the Tri-State Degree to observe differences among Florida, Georgia and Alabama to realize this. Scottish Rite ritual has undergone multiple revisions since the Supreme Council’s founding in 1801. Some changes were simply practical – some degrees were two to four hours long, excluding the lecture! Thankfully, perhaps, any catechisms required of candidates were eliminated. The original French degrees, if we think them to be the original, and revisions by the Scottish Rite over the years, provide much to think about and learn. Masonic Lodges and Temples are types of schools and our rituals are our means of instruction. Each degree contains some “history of ideas.” It is that which we seek. It therefore can be illuminating to return to historical documents to trace such ideas and to discern and consider what has been removed or modified. Equally enlightening may be what has been retained substantially unchanged. Here is an example from the 15th Degree “Knight of the Sword, of the East, or of the Eagle” from Masonic Rituals and Formulas (page 347):

Q: What art do you profess? A: Masonry. Q: What edifices do you erect? A: Temple and tabernacles. Q: Where do you construct them? A: For want of land to build on, we build them in our hearts. Although this language does not appear in the modern Scottish Rite ritual, it does appear, almost verbatim, in the work of an appendant body. Its message – that we are builders, “not of a material edifice, but of a Temple more glorious than Solomon’s” – appears throughout Masonic ritual. It is a foundational idea of Freemasonry --we are here to improve our own character, virtue, morality and conduct. This lesson survives, as we say, from time immemorial. Other important themes in this old French degree, e.g. the liberty of a people and freedom of conscience, are also retained in the modern Scottish Rite ritual, as well as in degrees of the Knights Masons and York Rite systems. Such continuity in the “history of ideas” should capture our attention. The words Masons speak may have changed over the years; their meanings may remain as elusive and obfuscated as ever, but the “history of ideas” remains for our examination. Our search for Light continues. The Scottish Rite Degrees will be conferred on April 22 and April 29. The 15th Degree is scheduled for April 22. Petitions are available at http://tampascottishrite.org. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. and the regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. 2017 officers will be installed on January 9; this meeting is open to family and visitors. Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He visited France once, but did not understand their language; they seemed to have a different word for everything. 

SAHIB SHRINERS

For several years, Sahib Shriners had what was referred to as an “Angel Fund’ to assist nobles who were unable to pay their dues because of health, financial or age related issues. The “Angel Fund” remitted the necessary funds to keep them as current members, and to avoid suspension due to non-payment of Shrine dues. This fund has been fully exhausted and there is no place in our budget to replenish the fund. This is where you can lend a helping hand to a fellow Shrine Mason, if he is in good standing within his Blue Lodge. For your contribution of $35, you can keep one delinquent member from being removed from our membership rolls for another year pending his status as a Master Mason. You can personally select a member from the current delinquent list, or we will do it for you. Please remember these nobles in need of a helping hand. Stop by the office and be responsible for keeping a fellow Shriner on the active list. 

Sar-I Court No. 79 - LOSNA by Peggy Sue Mitchell, High Priestess, peggyspegg@gmail.com

N

ovember was a very busy month for LOSNA. Our Grand had, shall I say, a grand visit and had great compliments on our Stated Meeting. Ladies this took team work, many thanks to all of you. It was good to not only have our Grand Diana with us but also Lady Carol Sue PHP and our dual member Lady Annette, Grand Treasurer and Past GHP, and let’s give our very own Jennie PGHP a hand, she was there working along with us. It was good to have visitors from other Courts. I enjoyed every moment. The FEZtival of Trees was fun and exciting, and I hope it put us all in the spirit for the remaining season. Remember those in need, our children who need our continued support, and those who are homebound. We thank all our veterans for their dedication in giving us our freedom. I hope we continue to not only be thankful at this time of year, but carry the love

and joy throughout each day of our lives. December looks to be just as busy and fun. January will also be a very busy month. Please let Lady Kay know if you can participate in the parades. Our Clowns stay busy with one project after another. What energy they have. We are going to try to hold a few classes that hopefully will be informative on our ritual and auditioning. I encourage each to become involved. I fully believe we have a lot of ladies who have the talent but may hesitate because they aren’t sure what is expected of each office or committee. We have Past High Priestesses that will help you and guide you. This Court is a great Court and will stand by you. Please think about it, if you have any questions just ask, if I can’t answer them or know where to find it in writing, I surely know who to go to for help. Please enjoy the holidays, travel safe and good health to all.

C

hristmas is over and a New Year is beginning. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. A Happy New Year to all and may 2017 be a great year for Daughters of the Nile. The fundraiser of a Taste of Soup and Desserts in December was a successful event. If you missed it, you missed some good soup, desserts and fellowship. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed the evening. A special thanks to the committee who planned this event and to all the Ladies of the Household who brought the soup and desserts. Our Supreme Queen Cathy Carol Rose will

be with us on January 22 for a Ceremonial and then for the Supreme Queen’s banquet which will be held at Sahib Shriners that evening after the Ceremonial. This is the event of the year for Nyla Temple and we are looking for all Ladies of the Household to attend the Ceremonial and then bring your guests to the banquet. Let’s show our Supreme Queen Cathy that Nyla Temple No. 152 is alive and growing strong. Remember it takes a team of everyone to get things done. Please be sure to make your reservations for the banquet by calling either Elaine Ortt or Laverne Mims. 
