Potentate’s Message

Hello again, yesterday it seems, I accepted your vote to serve as your Potentate for 2016. Today it is November and the faster the days flow as I complete my term. It continues to be frustrating, gratifying and complicated. We have had a busy late summer/fall season beginning with the Potentate’s Cruise, Ceremonial, Oktoberfest, Car & Truck Show, Gun Raffle, Commodore’s Ball, Sahib Shrine Circus and all the other usual temple activities. If you could not take part in these activities, you missed a good time. The events at Sahib are presented for your enjoyment and entertainment, how about joining your fellow nobles and their ladies for a great time while at the same time supporting your temple. We experienced a period of cash flow problems because of the time of year and the reduction in membership; we were able to place it in abeyance as we reviewed avenues for keeping Sahib financially sound. PP Dale LaBell, our Treasurer, does a great job as we continue looking into alternate means for generating income; as I have said, we need your support at Sahib’s events. Our November program has been changed due to several circumstances so please change your calendar: Salute to Veterans our annual “thank you” to those who served had to be cancelled due to the loss of our Sahib Band as a unit. This is truly distressing to all. We hope that future Potentates will find a solution to bring it back. Our annual Memorial Service has been moved to December 11 at 3:00 p.m. to allow for a very lucrative rental which is sorely needed! A great big tip of the Fez to Oriental Guide Gene Marinelli and his Lady Jeanne. They took on a very changed Ceremonial and in the face of the loss of several major events of the ceremony they, ably assisted by 1st Ceremonial Master Chevy Lawrence, were able to pull it all together! Our FEZtival of Trees will be turned on November 25, 26 and 27. Please make a special effort to come by and enjoy the beauty of the Christmas season and support your temple. That’s about it for this month. Only one more to go! Be safe and support your Sahib.

Yours in the Faith, Carroll G. Scribner Sahib Potentate 2016

s we head into the holiday season it is a time to remember what this season is all about. Giving to those in need and being thankful for what we have should be a daily focus. We thank God for what he provides to us. Lady Gail and I would like to wish all of you “Happy Holidays” and good health in the coming year. December and January will be a time of transition; this change is an inevitable part of our daily lives as Sahib Shrine changes over. In response to transition, we adapt, we adjust, as we move forward with our 5- year strategic plan and new goals and policies for 2017. In December we will nominate and elect officers for the next year. The foundation of leadership, established at our Shrine level, will rise throughout our organization for the future. So, if you ever considered being an officer or a unit/ club leader, aide, I encourage you to step forward now and transform your thoughts into action. It is an opportunity of a lifetime to help Sahib make a difference for you and the Shrine. It will provide you with many new friends and experiences that you will never forget. So, go for it! We at the Shrine need to thank Recorder Ed Firquin and Lady Wanda for producing “The Reporter.” The Sahib “Reporter” is the best

magazine in all of Shrinedom. So make sure you thank them for their hard work and dedication! I will be running for Potentate in December and hope that you will support me and continue to get involved in the many activities at the Shrine. Both Lady Gail and I want to thank everyone for his or her support for this past year with all the activities we had. Thank you! We went on the Potentate’s Cruise through the New England States and Canada. It was a great trip with some good laughs and some serious moments. The good news is we didn’t start any wars in Baltimore or Boston. Acadia National Park was my favorite place with all the scenery of rock formations, lakes, lighthouses and ocean shoreline. The serious moment was on Cadillac Mountain when our bus was getting ready to leave and we couldn’t find Lady Beatty Shipley. After going out and looking for her with Del Rawlinson, we found out that a lady had twisted her ankle down the side of Blue Trail on the mountain side. After finding the Blue Trail, I walked down about a quarter of a mile and found Lady Beatty with two young park rangers --- suspicious? They were trying to get her to hobble up the path. So, I told Beatty this may be a little uncomfortable but I’m going to pick . . .continued on page 14 

reetings, well we are almost at the end of another year and it’s been a busy one, with last month’s Ceremonial behind us and welcoming ten new candidates. Thank you nobles for your support in bringing in new members. Keep membership as one of your first priorities. They were also given the opportunity to see our clubs and units during the parade. Please encourage them to become members. The fall Oktoberfest/Chili Cook-Off was a great success and a good time was had by all that attended. We also had our Circus in October with lots of kids who had a wonderful time. Remember to support our FEZtival of Trees that is taking

place over Thanksgiving weekend. Ask your club or unit to sponsor a tree or volunteer to help with the event. It takes a village! Oh and don’t forget our Thanksgiving Dinner on November 24. Bring your appetite because there will be a full turkeyday dinner with all the fixings, and the best news is you don’t have to do the dishes. Elections of Sahib Officers will take place on December 7th at 7:30 p.m. This is an important meeting as members will be elected to lead and govern Sahib for 2017. Mark your calendar and make arrangements to attend. As always, be kind to one another. 

e are six weeks into the fall season and activities have picked up both at the Shrine and within the Motor Corps. But, before we get into those activities, we have a final report on our Bikerbilly Dinners back in July through August. Treasurer Dale LaBell’s report to President John Hubbard (Hotrod) showed that for the six weeks of Bikerbilly Dinners we had $5,316 in revenue. As previously reported, our biggest evening was July 28th when we received about 20 percent of our total revenue for the six weeks run. Sahib Shrine is the beneficiary of our efforts and we thank all those who supported us. The Motor Corps participated in the Fall Ceremonial Parade on October 1st. We had seven bikes and one trike participate in the parade. Great job by our members who performed. We’re hoping at least one of the new nobles will become a member of the Motor Corps. Because of conflicts, our annual fall “Ride to the Mountains” trip to Murphy, North Carolina was not held this year. We plan to put this trip back on our calendar next spring. Motor Corps members brought their Harley Davidson motorcycles for a static display at the Shrine Circus performance for school kids on Friday, October 29th. We enjoy this event every year and so do the kids as evidenced by a lot of high-fives to our members.

The fall Motor Corps Spaghetti Dinner is Sunday, November 20. We hope to see a lot of our fellow Shriners, families and friends on the 20th between 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. It’s all the spaghetti you can eat, our famous salad, Italian dinner rolls and wine. All this for only $10 in advance, $11 at the door. Children 12 and under eat free! We are happy to report that the Motor Corps will have a Christmas tree in the FEZtival of Trees later this month. You should have no problem spotting it because of the little motorcycle ornaments on it. We sure would appreciate your votes for our tree. We still have a few tickets left for the $500 Gift Certificate to Cooks Sportland in Venice. Tickets are available from any Motor Corps member. Only 100 tickets are being sold at $20 per ticket. The Motor Corps has a few birthdays and two anniversaries to report in November. Birthdays this month are: Lady Kitty Machanska on the 3rd, Lady Andrea Piper Hart on the 18th, Temp Hamilton (Snoozy) on the 20th and Lady Connie Lacey (Cooter) on the 27th. We have two anniversaries in November, Rich Robbins (Big Dawg) and Tessa on the 11th, Barry Hart (Policyman) and Barbara (B-ball) on the 15th. 

ur sno-nobles have yet to make an appearance, but we are hopeful this will change quickly when the temperature starts plunging “up north”. North Port Shrine Club magazine program is still on-going thanks to Nobles J. D. Copher and Art Stika. The delivery of the magazines was taken over by Noble Al Sawdai when yours truly could no longer deliver them. The job was then picked up by Noble Copher and Noble Stika and is currently very much alive so bring ‘em on in. This program was begun by your Scribe when, on visiting the Sarasota Medical Clinic on Toledo Blade and hearing a patient complain about the lack of reading material in the waiting room, the germ of the program was born. A sticker was designed to be applied to the magazines (see below) for Shrine information and exposure for NPSC. Strangely, none of our magazines are apparent in that waiting room, for some unknown reason they are placed in the adjoining rehab section. Go figure. September 19th saw a club Picnic at Dallas White Park. Your Scribe and lady did not attend and I cannot remember why. Another of many recurring memory lapses. Another reason I do not like snap questions like “what’s your name?” I’m sure it was another great Picnic as usual. October birthday greetings to Nobles Jim

MacDonald, Bill Shipley, Potentate Carroll Scribner, Bob Somerville and Don Gatrell. Another year older and if you’re like me more acquainted with Arthur Itis, c’est la vie! Did you know that God invented Bourbon because he wanted us to be happy? My Lady Kitty says I must be the happiest guy alive. Now why would she say that and why is she still making my cocktails for over 20 years? An excellent and perfect Bourbon Manhattan by the way. I always give her the business by saying “have barmaid, will travel”. (Bits and Pieces) So you think no good deed goes unpunished? A Connecticut man who tried to alert bank staff to a possible robbery ended up being arrested after he was mistaken for a robber himself. The customer spotted a man with a handgun and whispered to the teller “gun”. Thinking the customer was making a threat, the teller pressed the panic alarm. Police arrived and charged him with breech of peace for freaking out the bank staff. The man with the gun was a law enforcement officer. (Quotable Notable) Who said: “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I am not sure about the universe.” Usual comp breakfast for two for correct answer. QN for October: Colin Powell. 

If you’re a noble of the Shrine searching for brotherhood and camaraderie, remember that Sahib Shrine is yours. Find your way and enjoy your membership. Sahib is always in need of assistance with duties, there are many activities to become involved with for your pleasure. Don’t travel alone, bring someone with you to travel the journey crossing the hot sands to the welcoming shade of our goodly temple.

It may seem a little strange dressing in Chinese costumes and beating on drums and gongs, but you soon get used to the drill. I am really proud of our ladies who support us and accompany us all around this country and Canada. In the past we have performed in (no particular order) Tampa, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Vancouver, Toronto, Seattle, New Orleans, Birmingham, Denver, Miami, Minneapolis, etc. Without our ladies, I’m afraid we wouldn’t be four-timewinners of the Best of Show trophies. The gals double the fun of our little excursions. We have even had a little fun at parties after each victory, hard as this is to believe. Until next month, take care of each other and come join us if you can. 

Masonic Digest Scottish Rite by Casey A. Fletcher, KCCH, cfletcher@palletone.com

T

he Symbolic Lodge sometimes presents lessons in the form of dualities: darkness and light, good and evil, the checked pavement, ignorance versus enlightenment, death and life, east and west, two brazen pillars, etc. In the Fellow Craft lecture, we consider the contrasts detected by the sense of feeling: heat and cold; roughness and smoothness and hardness and softness. Such dualities call our attention to alternatives in our lives, choices we must make or conflicts we must reconcile. Modern times likewise present us with many “dual” or “opposite” alternatives. Examples are: red versus blue, faith versus reason, science versus religion, justice versus mercy, public versus private, security versus liberty. Reconciling the dualities is challenging. Sometimes we may suspect such dualities to be false choices or perhaps incomplete choices. One of the many arenas in which the instruction of Freemasonry excels is in its use of triads – groups of three. Reflect upon how many times the number three appears in the first three degrees; three principal officers, three metaphorical pillars, three Great Lights, three steps on the Master’s carpet, etc. Why? What is the purpose so many groups of three? What are we to discern from their presence? Perhaps Freemasonry’s liberal use of triads is designed to teach us to deal with the dualities of life. Consider Freemasonry’s claim to have three, original Grand Masters representing Wisdom, Strength and Beauty. The Thirteenth Degree, the Royal Arch of Solomon, uses different words to represent the three Masters. It suggests the Masters represent Divine Intellect and Divine Power – attributes of Deity – and the Harmony between the two. Harmony allows us to recognize beauty – to have the ability to adore the undertakings of the intellect and power of Deity.

Where harmony exists, beauty may be observed. The word harmony also provides a bridge between the dualities enumerated in Freemasonry and its triads. For example, if we think dualistically, Justice and Mercy are opposites and seemingly mutually exclusive. However, if we mentally picture a triangle, one can place, say Justice, on the vertical side, the other, Mercy, on the horizontal. What is the hypotenuse? Harmony. Thinking about triangles helps us to identify and locate an equilibrium or balance between constructs that appear irreconcilable. The 27th Degree, Knight of the Sun, also makes the point that thinking in threes helps reconcile the dualities and opposites in life. The third side of the triangle that reconciles security with liberty, faith with reason, the physical with the spiritual, science with religion is harmony. Harmony, balance, equilibrium – they render the dualities of life manageable or at least addressable. Life is full of dualities, seemingly “either or” dilemmas. Freemasonry teaches us to think in threes. The presence of triads entreats us to think about things differently. Our three ancient Grand Masters, representing Wisdom, Strength and Harmony, suggest a mental picture of a triangle. When the triangle was broken, which side went missing? The Scottish Rite Degrees will next be conferred on April 22nd and April 29th. Petitions are available at http://tampascottishrite.org. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month. Dinner is served at 5:45 p.m. and the regular meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. Right Worshipful William Sundquist 32nd Degree will present an educational program on November 14. Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. He has detected about thirty triads within the first three degrees. 

ctober brings LOS to the beginning time. We all enjoyed the Ladies’ Luncheon at the Fall Ceremonial at Sahib and meeting all the new wives of the new candidates. Our Lady Kay is busy planning for our Grand Lady Diana Schmitz’s visit on November 18 and 19. Remember, all you men are welcome to come to her special Luncheon on the 19th at Sahib Shriners, please contact Lady Kay Neary at (941) 780- 3135 for details. Lady Diana will be visiting several of our sister courts in the middle of the state during her fall visit to Florida. We would very much like to see some of our very own Divan come and greet our Lady Grand. Men are welcome. Lady Carol is busy heading up our decorating team for the FEZtival of Trees. We have supported the Shrine for all three years of its existence and are looking forward to this year. In December, we will be having a toy walk for our older Shrine children, we find sometimes we all forget there are older children and their

needs. This will take place instead of the Annual Candy Cane Walk at our Stated Meeting. I have a feeling Mrs. and or Mr. Clause will be there to accept the gifts. Lady Brenda (will be hosting our annual Christmas Party and Lunch). Please contact her at (941) 993-3453 for details and again, men may also attend. Lady Barbarann has the Fashion Show (February) well underway and I know she has lots of entertainment and merriment for all to enjoy. Ladies invite your family and friends to join us, we have a great time. Contact Lady Barbarann at (941) 704 9747. My special program, “luggage for our foster kids,” is going great. I have had responses from Manatee all the way to North Port. Please help these children with any size or color of luggage you no longer use. erhaps we will be getting cooler weather now that we are in November. Our October Session was a good one with voting on new petitions and a reinstatement. Nyla is on the way to becoming the temple it was a few years ago. If you haven’t attended or demitted, come back. You will be glad you did. No other ladies’ organization supports our Shriners Hospitals for Children like Daughters of the Nile. Our next Session is November 3rd. Ladies, see

one of the Daughters of the Nile, sign a petition and you will be proud of belonging to this great ladies’ organization. Be sure to put January 22, 2017 on your calendar for the visit of our Supreme Queen Cathy. The banquet will be held at Sahib Shriners and it is open to everyone, so come meet Supreme Queen Cathy. You may make your reservation by calling me at (941) 727-0150. More to follow. Have a great fall and winter. 

You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children.
