The Circle of Life have never made too much of a big deal out of birthdays, a cake, a few friends out to dinner or at the house for good cheer and fellowship. As you read this edition of The Reporter, I will be turning the “big seven o.” Yes 70. Yeah, I know 70 is the new 60. My dear Lady Susan is trying to sell that one to me but the mirror does not lie. This is not a 60 year old mug staring back at me. Yes, I am fortunate to have a luxurious head of now silver hair and for that I am grateful. But what is that stiffness in both of my little fingers and that slight pain in the left knee? Just signs of a few too many miles on the body; that suit my soul wears to navigate its time on this 3rd Planet from the Sun. I only take half of a pill a day for a tad bit of high blood pressure so I count myself lucky. I was sitting with one noble a few Thursdays ago who told me he must take 42 pills a day. Wow, that is a lot of chemicals sloshing around in there. Isn’t modern medicine and big pharma wonderful? There is a circle of life, one that every human on this planet must experience and obey. It is beautifully told in Ecclesiastes verses 1-8: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted: A time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up: A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance: A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing: A time to get and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to cast away: A time to rend and a time to sew, a time to keep silence and a

I

time to speak: A time to love and a time to hate, a time of war and a time of peace.” This time of life I am entering is the time of the “bucket list”; of the undone things getting done. It is a time of being more loving and tender to those who have put up with us for so many years. It is a time of reflection on things of quality, of the fine things in our life. It is a time for keeping fit and keeping strong for although the body is merely the house our soul and spirit lives in for this short earthly journey, it is not good to let the house get run down. It is well that human life is lived in chapters for we learn so much from each one. This one I am entering is perhaps the most instructive of all. It is where true wisdom comes; if we are ever to achieve it. It is where great gratitude for our blessings, our loves, our successes and most of all the times we missed the mark, failed or just did not get it done; for those times were our best teachers. This is the truly the richest time of our life for we have the time to reflect, to love without holding back, to cherish each sunrise and each rainfall. This is the pinnacle of life, not the end. We are preparing for our transition from the Lodge Militant here on Earth to the Lodge Triumphant where we will rest for a while, greet those who came before and prepare for the next journey. On my 70th birthday (September 7) I bless and thank each and every one of you for the rich and wonderful 69th year I have had as a member of Sahib Shriners Divan. My brothers this is the best of life, right here and right now. Cherish every moment. 

Potentate’s notes Nobles and ladies, Our thanks to the Motor Corps for doing a great job in the kitchen for July and August while the Hillbillys took a well-deserved break. If you missed one of those great hamburgers you will have to wait until next year. We have a beautiful Main Hall (Ballroom) with the new paint, carpet and soon the new chairs and with the great staff doing the magic, we should be renting this hall out all next year. So make your plans early so that you can get the time you need for your Sahib Unit/ Club parties. Not too late to plan your Christmas Party this year. Take a moment and stop by the bar and check out the new decor. In the May edition of The Reporter I wrote in my article about anyone who may be interested in running for the Divan line for 2016:

“Nobles who want to get in line for an office in Sahib Shriners (Divan) you may

talk with any Divan member and also, there is a committee - Leadership Search

Committee. They will talk with you and help you with any and all questions. The

committee consists of Ill. Sir PP Curt Toale, Nobles Fred Ellis and Ed Jordon.”

We as a Team may be able to answer any and all questions, but if you are interested, speaking with a committee member is another option. I know this may be early, but we need to get dedicated people for the coming years. So if you know of anyone, please advise him of this message. Hope you have gotten your Candidate for the Fall Ceremonial. There is a Candidate’s Petition in this edition of The Reporter. It is not too late. Working together we can get our membership back and beat the Black Camel. I am proud to serve the nobility. Stay healthy and remember those who are not. (Yours in the Faith) Respectfully, Connie Jacobi, Potentate NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING TO AMEND TEMPLE BYLAWS I, Connie Jacobi, Potentate of Sahib Shriners 2015 do call for a Special Meeting for September 17, 2015 at 12:00 p.m.; this declaration being given after notice to address and consider by vote a change in Sahib Shriners bylaw Article 5, (5.2) Dues. The annual dues will be determined by vote of members in goodstanding and no other item shall be discussed or voted on at this meeting. We can’t grow, if they don’t know!

all is just around the corner with cooling breezes to refresh us Floridians. Our friends from the north will soon be back with us here at Sahib, they will be greeted in the southern traditions of a smile and welcome back handshake. The new looks in the Main Hall and Sahara Lounge will be waiting for their visits. The menu will give each a great choice of fine food served by Noble Ed Shauan and his staff. The fall calendar is full of activity for nobles, their ladies and friends in Sarasota. This month finds the Hillbillys returning from their summer vacation and their country fixings can once again be enjoyed on

Thursday evenings. The Motor Corps Shrine Club did a great Bikerbilly Bash during July and August. President Dave Bell had those bikers cooking and scooting around the restaurant and lounge. Their lovely ladies, of course with a smile, took care of orders and serving the food to those enjoying the good time served up by Sahib’s great Motor Corps. The Fall Grand Ceremonial is scheduled for September 16, 18 and 19. The 16th will have the candidates and their ladies meeting the clubs and units in the Main Hall with an introduction of Shrinedom. . . .continued on page 9 

i once again, I hope your year is treating you well. Mine jumped up and bit me in the rotator cuff so I am still a little sore in places. I have to get back to work! Just got over that when I was hit with vertigo. I was out of balance for sure for a few days. Before my shoulder surgery, I was a guest speaker at Bay Palms and was well received. I am always proud to represent Sahib and the Shrine letting people know what we do for children. I represented you at the Imperial Session. I saw a lot, learned a lot, and was happy with most decisions and unhappy for a couple. Please note that Potentate Connie Jacobi, Assistant Rabban Bill Balkwill, Recorder Emeritus Bill Batten and I attended all sessions, each day, on your behalf. Thank you for your confidence in electing us to represent you. The FEZtival of Trees is fast approaching and your

committee is gearing up to get officially started on September 1. We will have our first meeting August 19 at 6:00 p.m. at Sahib to lay out changes and assignments. We learned a whole lot last year and hope to do a better job this year. If you would like to be a part of this program, give me a call. Ill. Sir Connie Jacobi is giving his full support to this effort which is a great step in the right direction. Thanks Connie. Elsewhere in this edition you will find more information on The FEZtival of Trees, a letter that is used to bring donors and participants to our program. Please read it and consider becoming a sponsor or tree donor. Also find an entry form for trees. If you decide to help your temple, please go to our website to enter. We need your support! I will see you at Sahib or at your club or unit. 

reetings once again, fellow nobles. As I write this, during our hot and rainy months, the Sahib Shriners are preparing for the rest of the year with a full-scale agenda. We have Ceremonial, Circus, Parades, FEZtival of Trees, Fall Picnic, Concerts, Friday Dinners, Queen of Hearts, Birthday/ Anniversary Dinner Dances and Bingo. So come on out and be involved in any of these events. Please stay in touch by using the website http://sahibshrine.org and/ or The Reporter. We need to thank Noble Bill Batten, Recorder Emeritus, and new Imperial Emeritus, for the great job he does in relaying the information from the Imperial Session. So give him a big “thank you” when you see him. We would also like to thank Ill. Sir Connie

Jacobi and Lady Deanie for organizing the social events surrounding Imperial in Houston. How can we forget Morton’s Restaurant and our waitress singing to us. We want to thank Aleppo Shriners for inviting us to their Shrine gathering. They made us feel at home. Thank you Potentate Ill. Sir David Raymond! Future Imperial Sessions: 2016 Tampa, 2017 Daytona, 2018 Daytona, 2019 Nashville, 2020 Kansas City. Last but not least, your Divan, under the leadership of Ill. Sir Connie Jacobi, has developed a 5-year Strategic Plan for Sahib. Goal No. 9 is very important and I would like to bring you up to date with it:

ad luck comes in threes.” “Bad things happen in threes.” “Trouble Comes in Threes.” These superstitions, folklores, or wives tales seem to have fallen upon the Motor Corps in recent times. First, Lady Peggy Sue Mitchell was injured in an accident at her home. Then Ken Shipley (Doc) went down on his bike en route to Sturgis, South Dakota on Interstate 75. Finally, Bob Hammer (Hammertime) was riding his bicycle and was cut off by a car when he damaged his ribs and dislocated his shoulder. By the time you are reading this article, all should be recovering, albeit slower than they might have liked. In any event, we will be glad to eventually have them all back at 100 percent and hopefully, no more threes for the Motor Corps. One bit of belated news. At the FSA meetings back in May, the Florida Association of Shrine Motor Corps (FASMC) held their competition at the Dog Track and at the parking lot adjacent to the Holiday Inn Express near the airport. One of our members, John Hubbard (Hotrod) competed. This was Hotrod’s first competition on his Harley trike and he did pretty well. We even have some photos to prove it. Several of our members and their ladies did make it to Sturgis, South Dakota for the big motorcycle rally in August. 2015 is the 75th anniversary of this most famous of motorcycle rallies. Over the course of six days from August 3 - 9th, more than 400,000 bikers descended upon this little community in the Black Hills. The Bikerbilly dinners are now history. We sure hope you had a chance to visit with us on the Thursday nights in July and August when the Motor Corps filled in for the Hillbilly Shrine Club. This year things seem to have gotten off to a slow start in July, but by August we did see some increased traffic. Many of your fellow Shriners and their friends did dine with us each Thursday evening during our seven-week run. We appreciate everyone’s support and say thanks to

Certificate received from the Florida Grand Master for support of the Masonic Home.

the Motor Corps members and their ladies for helping out. We could not have done it without the help of our ladies. At the risk of leaving out any of our ladies, we say special thanks to Jill, Carol, Muriel and Cathy. The August Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance was hosted by the Motor Corps. If you were not there, you missed out on a delightful evening. Musical entertainment was provided by the “Mellotones.” We also enjoyed the Roast Pork Loin with Apple Stuffing or Stuffed Flounder entree selections. Dress for that event was Hawaiian/Guayabera shirts for men and summertime dressy casual for women. A number of the Motor Corps members wore their black Guayabera shirts. Several weeks back, the Motor Corps received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Grand Master of Florida for our contributions to the Masonic Home. We were advised that our name had been inscribed on the Permanent Roll of the Masonic Home 100 Club. The annual Englewood Pioneer Day Parade is scheduled for Labor Day, September 7 at 9:00 a.m. The Motor Corps expects to participate in the parade along with the other units of Sahib. Hopefully the weather will not be too warm for the air cooled Harley Davidson motorcycles. Motor Corps members enjoy this parade and the afterglow which follows. We have only a few members with birthdays and anniversaries to report in September. Birthdays include Eric Bock (Ironman) on the 7th, Norm Cyphers (Stormin Norman) on the 25th and Ben Pfeiffer (Inspector) on the 29th. The two anniversaries this month are Dave Bell (Jetfoot) and Rita (Sweet Pea) on the 6th and Joe Stella (Stroker Joe) and Suzy Lucas (Cream Cheese) on the 7th. Activities at Sahib will be picking up as we move further into fall. We should have a lot more news in the October Reporter. Safe travels until then. Hydrate (your body) and inflate (your tires). 

our Scribe has joined the ranks of the walking wounded upon receiving the unwelcome news that after all the procedures on my eye, things are not going to change and the eye for all intents and purposes is useless. If it is any consolation I am reminded that many a pirate continued operating with one eye and it sure did not harm Israel’s Moshe Dayan’s achievements any. Just be wary of a red Ford hatchback driven by a one-eyed Shriner. C’est la vie! A reminder: Those folks that have correctly identified a “QN” in past articles are invited to a breakfast for two as guests of the North Port Shrine Club at the Olde World Restaurant in North Port on Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. Just let me know when you can attend. It was interesting to note in the latest Shriner magazine that two of my former Shrine temples were mentioned, Nur in Wilmington, Delaware for affiliations and Salaam in Livingston, New Jersey with a “Shriner of the Month”. Salaam was astute enough to realize that Newark, New Jersey was undergoing urban deterioration and wisely sold their building and built a marvelous new one in the suburbs. Ft. Myers’ Araba might consider a likewise move. Our Nobles Don Gatrell and PP Tom Millaway still not out of the woods with their medical problems. Our thoughts are with them always. Since this is the slow season and many nobles have fled northward and I have missed a few gatherings, there is not a lot to report. A Picnic is coming up September 21, always a good time and great food but

room for improvement in the beer department. Give me a break from the “lite” stuff guys. I am sure I will hear about that comment. Caught up on some news I was not aware of. Our member Noble Chris Depass, PWM, Punta Gorda Lodge was married a time back. NPSC wishes the newlyweds all the best. Also received a communication from Dr. Leigh Treco who provides talks on nutrition, exercise and health to various area clubs and organizations asking if any Shrine group would be interested in her presentation. Might be of interest to other Sahib Units and the ladies of Nyla Temple and Sar-I Court. She may be contacted at <Dr.LeighTreco@gmail.com>. Is there any information about how many Master Masons there are in this area that are not members of the Shrine? It behooves us to reach out to these brothers and educate them on the benefits of Shrine membership. (Bits and Pieces) Funky architecture, after the curved glass facade of a new London skyscraper acted like a giant magnifying glass, melting the side of a businessman’s luxury car. “Imagine if the sun reflected on the wrong part of the body,” said the car’s stunned owner. Sir Connie Jacobi, Potentate; Carroll Scribner, Chief Rabban; Bill Balkwill, Assistant Rabban; Del Hyland, Oriental Guide; Bill Batten, Recorder Emeritus; Past Potentates, Ill. Sirs Lou Ortt and Don Vos. Two of our Associate Past Potentates, Ill. Sirs Paul Shillington and Chris Hansen, were also in attendance. The Schedule of Events for this Imperial Session left very little time for your representatives to enjoy the many tours or other events in Houston. For many, every day started with meetings scheduled for 7:00 a.m., with the regular sessions starting at 8:00 or 8:30 a.m. All session meetings were held in the GRB Convention Center. This is the largest convention center I have ever seen. The walk from our hotel, via an elevated, air condition walkway connecting to the convention center and to our meeting location could have been a half mile. Many of us made that journey two or three times a day. Our schedule started on Sunday with the annual Church Service at 1:00 p.m., followed by the Grand Public Opening at 3:00 p.m. At this Public Opening there were 41 Masons created Shrine Nobles. The huge Market Place also opened for business. There were over 100 vendors who displayed and sold a huge assortment of Masonic and Shrine jewelry and clothing, as well as a vast amount of other items that were available for sale. Other booths included the Shrine information area, travel consultants, circus promoters, Shrine and Masonic insurance providers as well as fundraising displays. At this Imperial Session, there were 21 items on the call to be reviewed, discussed where needed and voted on by the representatives. In addition, elections were held for all current Imperial Officers, Shriners Hospitals Trustees, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shriners Hospitals and other board members. There were two candidates nominated for the office of Imperial Outer Guard. A ballot was called for, and the results indicated that Ill. Sir James Stolze, Jr. was declared the winner. The other candidate for this office was Ill. Sir Richard Burke. He thanked all for their support and made a motion that the Recorder cast a unanimous ballot for Ill.

Sir James Stolze, Jr. The motion carried. He then announced that he would be a candidate for the position of Imperial Outer Guard next year. The “Time and Place” Committee reported that the Imperial Session for 2016 would be held in Tampa, Florida. There was a short video shown about the many events available to see in Tampa. The Director General was introduced, Ill. Sir John Massey, PP of Egypt Shriners. John also served as the Director General of the last Imperial Session held in Tampa. Imperial Sessions have previously been announced for years 2017, 2018 and 2019. The location of the 2020 Imperial Session will be held in Kansas City, Missouri. Dates are July 6 to July 9. On Monday the session adjourned at 12:30 p.m. so that all could attend competition events in this convention center. This facility was so large, that even the Horse Patrols, as well as all motorized units (except the Motorcycle Unit) were able to compete in the convention center. Since so many of the items on the call were “house cleaning” items such as temple relocations, temple jurisdictional lines, changes in Associations and Demit regulations, I will make no comment as these would be of little, if any, interest to Sahib Shriners. Item 1 on the call was for an increase of $15 annually in the per capita tax to Shriners International. An excellent presentation of the need for this increase in the annual per capita tax was given. Shriners International has been operating with a large deficit for several years. They have no other source of income to operate Shrine Headquarters, its employees and to provide all the services needed to operate our own Shrine temples. A motion to increase the per capita tax to $30 per year for each member was made and seconded. A call for any discussion was made, and several of the representatives spoke for the amendment, and several against. Those opposed felt that a loss of membership would result if the amendment passed. The ballot was finally called for and the amendment passed. An excellent report on Shriners Hospitals for Children was presented by Imperial Sir Douglas Maxwell, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The video presentation shown to those present indicated that our hospitals continue to be Change is inevitable, Growth is optional!

number one in the nation in the treatment of our patients. We even had live action during the presentation with several of our hospitals, showing our doctors and staff in operation. The live shots from the Mexico Hospital showed the waiting room for treatments and it looked like there were over 100 waiting. The overall video and hospital report was outstanding. At the conclusion of the report, two patients from the Houston Hospital were presented on stage. This “added” feature enhanced the presentation and report. I wish you all could have been present for Imperial Sir Doug Maxwell’s excellent report. Other committee reports were given at various times at the sessions. All were approved. It was necessary to elect two members to the Board of Trustees of the Colorado Corporation. There were five candidates nominated for this position. A ballot was called for and the results indicated that Ill. Sir Rick Williams and Dr. Brant Bede, M.D. were elected. It was also necessary to elect a Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Two members were nominated for this position. They were Imperial Sir Douglas Maxwell, current chairman and Imperial Sir Dale Stauss, the current Imperial Potentate. The ballot was called for, and after a very close contest, Imp. Sir Dale Stauss was declared the winner. The annual Shriners Parade was held on Tuesday evening. As usual, it was a huge event. Texas has 13 Shrine temples and they were very evident in the parade. Many outstanding units performed, marched or rode in this mile-long parade. It was very hot and humid, but it did not stop the participants or the Shrine attendees and the public from watching this great parade. On Wednesday, the Imperial Pageant and Public Installation took place. Imperial Potentate-Elect Jerry G. Gantt was honored. His family was introduced and he received many gifts from his family, Shrine temples and others. As usual, it was a very impressive pageant. At an earlier business session we welcomed a new Shrine temple, Hikmat Shriners located in Cuiaba, Mato Grosso, Brazil. There were a large number of nobles from this new temple in attendance. Only one spoke English, and with an interpreter present, we received the thanks for creating this new temple . . .continued on page 21 

his is just a reminder that the Sahib Kentucky Colonels are coming out of darkness and entering light starting on Tuesday evening, September 22, 2015 and then for the following several months. The Colonels look forward to all those that have been coming to continue to do so and all others, whether a current member who has not been with us for a while to return and those that are not members will come and check us out. Remember, your ladies are encouraged to come and join in the fun with you. We will still be getting together at the Tara Golf & Country Club which is at 6602 Drewry’s Bluff in Bradenton. Kindly put the date in your calendar now. If you have questions please contact me Colonel Robert L. (Bob) Rodd, President; Colonel Jim Fleming, V.P.; Colonel Bud Glidden, Secretary; or Colonel David Rowe, Treasurer for information and an application. The summer has been good to Kathy and me. We spent 43 days and 6,600 miles driving to Colorado for one of our grand-daughter’s wedding. While there, we drove up the Rocky Mountains up to 12,000 feet at

which point my chest felt like it was about to burst so we decided it was time to go back down. The snow was white and the plows piled the snow way above a person. We then headed to Albuquerque, New Mexico for Kathy’s The Daughters of the Nile Convention which was great for both of us. After the convention, we went with several on a day’s trip that took us to a Pueblo village that is 200 or so feet up on a plateau. All I can say is wow. Then several days across Texas to Biloxi and then home. A couple of weeks, after arriving home, we had two friends from Massachusetts come and visit for ten days. Another fantastic time. We hope to see you at our Kentucky Colonel September get together and find out what has been going on in your lives these past months as well as to enjoy some great food, etc. The invitation for same will be coming out shortly. Make sure we have your email address so you will receive an invitation. 

Legion of Honor by Malcolm H. VanDyke II, sahibloh@comcast.net

T

he month of September brings several important events for Legion of Honor nobles. The magical season of fall begins and the return of our snowbird nobles; cooler weather and the holidays. Lots of parades, but more importantly, the return of our monthly LOH meetings, nominations and electing our 2016 LOH Officers. The Color Captain is seeking a “few good LOH men” to train for membership in the LOH Color Guard. The only requirement is that you have a complete LOH Parade uniform. But not to worry because if you do not, the QM Officer can fit you for a complete LOH uniform at no cost to you. Contact the Color Captain 24/7/365 on his cell phone at (941) 356-4614 if you are interested. Training is easy and painless! The LOH is again this year involved in the Veterans Day Program in November at Sahib Shriners. Like last year, which was a solid winner, this year again the Dining Out with wives will take place along with military tributes, programs and toasts. As has been LOH history for many years now, the LOH again sponsors the November Sahib Birthday/ Anniversary Dinner Dance on November 10, 2015. The LOH will have our own tables so be sure to see Marylou

and get your tickets. Meal choices are Roast Fresh Ham or Coconut Fried Shrimp. Plans are underway to have a 15-minute military program between dinner and dessert (as is usual for the Sahib Legion of Honor). Where were you on March 25, 2015? Were you wearing a Sahib Shriners’ shirt and your LOH medallion and Fez when you went into your local Sarasota or Manatee Counties Jersey Mike’s Subs, ordered your favorite sandwich, and all, like 100% of your paid bill, went to our Shriners Hospital for Children - Tampa? I did just that at my local Tuttle and Bee Ridge Jersey Mike’s Sub store and got lots of stares, but when I explained why I was dressed that way I received many thanks for the great work that we Shriners do for our kids. Many in the store knew of the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. By the way: My tuna sub that night seemed to taste just a bit better! I wonder why? Plans are underway for some exciting new ideas for 2016 LOH meetings. Daytime meetings; daytime meetings with wives and lunch; speakers at some meetings? Stay tuned. How good and pleasant it is for noble soldiers to dwell together in unity. Keep in touch. 

all is just around the corner and the Mariners have some great plans for September. Our regular meeting will be Wednesday, September 9, with dinner from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Bridge will meet at 6:30 p.m., followed by the monthly meeting at 7:00 p.m. Do not forget the Birthday/Anniversary Dinner Dance on Tuesday, September 8. This is always a fun evening. Our Mariners’ weekend of “Levity” will be at the Waterfront Hotel in Punta Gorda, September 18, 19 and 20. Please call 941-639-1165 as soon as possible for reservations. We have planned two nice dinners for Friday and Saturday and we always have a good hospitality room. (BYOB)

The Fall Ceremonial is September 18 and 19 at Sahib Shriners. Our Potentate Ill. Sir Connie Jacobi is urging those not able to go to Punta Gorda to please support the Ceremonial and march in the parade. You can attend the Saturday events at Sahib and still join us for dinner at the Waterfront Hotel that evening. All Sahib Nobles and guests are cordially invited to attend our Commodore’s Ball on Saturday, October 17, beginning at 6:00 p.m. This is the Mariners’ big event for the year. The Mariners have lots of fun and if you are interested in becoming a part of this special group, call me at 941-377-9491. 

 . . .continued from page 14 Report on Imperial Session from their new Potentate. One of the highlights of this business session for me was when Past Potentate Lou Ortt and I were called to the stage and presented with our Emeritus Representative Certificates. Lou received his from the Colorado Corporation, Shriners Hospitals, and I received mine from the Iowa Corporation, Shriners International. On Wednesday the Imperial Public Relations Report was presented. It showcased many of the outstanding PR events during the past year. This included the annual East-West Shrine Bowl Game,

Rose Bowl Parade, Golf Tournament, various TV commercials and events where our Shrine Patient Ambassadors appeared. It was a very impressive report. A video was shown telling the story of two young hospital patients, one a female burn victim, and one had a loss of his leg. After the video, the two patients, along with their family members, were introduced to those in attendance. They received a very warm reception. These two patients will be the new Shriners Hospitals Ambassadors for the coming year. The Imperial Potentate’s evening, Wednesday night, in my opinion, was the

best that I have attended in many years. Featured was a group of three male vocal performers, known as “The Texas Tenors” who were excellent. They had a backup band of four, and the songs they sang were much diversified, from pop to classical, to old favorites. I saw no one leave early and the applause for this group was overwhelming. I appreciate once more having the opportunity of being one of the Sahib Representatives at the Imperial Session and hope to continue serving you and members of Sahib Shriners in the future.

I

t is a maxim of the corporate world that if you are not growing you are dying. That is also true of notfor-profits such as Sahib Shriners. It is also true of you and me. When we stop growing, learning and loving, we die. Yes, we hear dire predictions for our membership numbers in seven years but that will only be true if we sit on our hands and do nothing. Nothing is written in the stars or a great book. We will decide whether Sahib has 2,000 members or 500 in five more years. I challenged each club and unit to bring in just two new members. I am ready to receive them nobles. Email them, fax them or drop them by my house. All it takes is to sit in Lodge, talk to your brothers and ask them to become a Shriner. Be sure to have a petition in

your pocket. Shrine movies are nice but just asking is better. When they see you in Lodge showing that you are a Mason first and a Shriner second you will get their support. Invite them to our Fall Picnic. That would be a great introduction to the family fun and fellowship that only the Shrine offers. It is October 18 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. under the big tent at the temple. You will be receiving a letter soon with tickets to the Picnic. Watch for it. Be sure to bring your kids, grandkids or great grandkids and let us watch me get a pie in the face once again. The Band, the Clowns, great food donated by the King Pins and fun and games. You do not want to miss this. 

Masonic Digest Scottish Rite by Casey A. Fletcher, KCCH, cfletcher@palletone.com

E

mpedocles of Acragas was a Greek, pre-Socratic philosopher living around 450 BC. He is one of the earliest of a very long list of philosophers and religious leaders throughout history endeavoring to explain the origin and operation of the world and define the role of the individual man in it. He lived in the Age of Pericles and was likely a contemporary of Protagoras, Diogenes and the historian Herodotus. Many fragments of his writings are extant. His full works were referenced by Aristotle often. He was the first to develop the theory of the four elements – earth, water, fire and air – to explain the macrocosm, how the world was created, what it is made of and how it works. The theory, over the centuries, has probably been applied too literally for a scientific explanation of how the world works. Empedocles, however, used the elements more esoterically as symbols for other characteristics, attributes or phenomenon. Developing his theory, he suggested there were two basic laws of Nature. The Law of Love was the first. It unifies and stabilizes. The other law was the Law of Strife. It impedes development. It destroys and harms. Empedocles uses the symbolism of the four elements to explain the functioning of the two laws. To the extent the four elements are balanced and in proportion, the world moves toward a state of Love. To the extent one or more of elements either dominates or is suppressed, the world moves toward Strife. He saw the world in a constant cycle of four stages “the rule of love, the period of increasing strife, the rule of strife, and the period of increasing love.”

Not to be satisfied with only applying these ideas to the universe, Empedocles asserted they also explained the microcosm, the individual. As the four elements, symbolically, become well-balanced and well-proportioned in our lives, we grow toward love, unity, knowledge, understanding and wisdom. Further he suggests, “an equal proportion of the elements is responsible for clear thinking.” To the extent a man acts wisely, controls his passion, “judiciously uses his senses,” thinks solidly and balanced, he can learn “the truth about the world” and about his role in it. Empedocles’ ideas appear frequently in Masonic ritual. The principle of the Law of Love is the crux of the 18th Degree, Knight of Rose Croix. And the four elements? References to them are scattered throughout our degrees, to good effect. The idea of balance and proportion of the (symbolic) elements in our lives might just be the focus in one of the higher numbered degrees. The Scottish Rite’s degrees will next be conferred on October 17 and 24. Petitions are available at http:// tampascottishrite.org. The Valley of Tampa regularly meets at its Center in Tampa on the 2nd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m., preceded by a 5:45 p.m. dinner. Our September 14 meeting is Worshipful Master and Masonic Youth organization recognition night. An open meeting, visitors are welcome. Casey Fletcher is Past Master of Tuscan Lodge No. 6 in Bartow, Florida. On more than one occasion, it has been suggested he is unbalanced. 

his summer even though Sar-I Court No. 79 was dark, we were still busy doing work for Shriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa. I was interviewed on WSSB TV Channel 7 by ABC News Anchor Don Brenan at noon promoting our special summer project, “Christmas in July.” We held the toy collection at Sahib Shriners on July 21 and collected over $1,000 in cash and gift cards and another $3,000 in toys for children, from infants to teens. We surpassed last year’s numbers in excess of $1,000. Thanks to everyone who donated or helped with the collection to make the day a great success. We delivered the toys to Tampa Hospital on July 24 and they were quickly put to use. We had eight ladies go to deliver the toys and had a wonderful VIP tour and lunch. If you have not been lately to the Tampa Hospital, they are doing amazing new things, making great progress in the field of orthopaedics and expanding their horizons into new areas. I am a retired pediatric nurse and also had an orthopaedic implant company and I was impressed. Go check them out.

We continued our sewing this summer for the hospitals making quilts, pajamas and clothing. If you like to sew, paint quilt squares or just want to help the children and meet some great women, come join us on the 4th Thursday of the month in the Educational Building at the First United Church of Christ on Euclid Avenue, Sarasota behind the YMCA. We have great fun and fellowship while doing good things for the children. After moving this summer to a new condo, Jim and I did take a few weeks break in August and cooled off in the mountains of North Georgia. It was perfect rest after a hectic time. September starts up with a bang with our Stated Meeting, voting on petitions we got in the summer for new members and a fundraiser for the Grand High Priestess’s Special Project. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Ladies Oriental Shrine please contact me at the email above or phone (941) 807-4011 or anyone of our ladies at the Shrine should have a petition in her purse. We would love for you to join us. 

H

ope all of you have had a wonderful summer. Time has flown by these past few months. Supreme Session in Albuquerque, New Mexico went very well. Even the weather was superb. They have had some rain which made for some beautiful green scenery and comfortable temperatures. We sure enjoyed photographing the area and have so many great memories. Even though we talked about taking a hot air balloon ride, we did not do it, maybe another time. Yes, the legislation went well and we remain a Masonic/Shrine related organization. There will be more detailed information in our newsletter for our members as far as what has been voted on and what items did not pass. It was so nice to see the enthusiasm of the ladies, the men of the Gentlemen of the Creek and the representatives of our three youth groups. When the roll call was done, of the temples in attendance, I marveled at how many of these ladies are traveling from great distances. All the provinces of Canada were represented. Then there is a large group who has been coming faithfully every year from Hawaii. Their modes of travel reminded me of the first ladies of Daughters of the Nile who for each session would first travel by ferry,

then on to a trolley and the last portion of their trip was walking until they arrived at their destination. In talking to some of these ladies, they all said traveling together using the various modes of transportation was their time to socialize and get to know each other better. The Gentlemen of the Creek presented our Supreme Queen with a check in the amount of $7,000. Every year they amaze us with a sizeable check that will go to the Shriners Hospitals for Children along with all that has been raised throughout the year by the members of Daughters of the Nile. Yes all three youth groups, (Job’s Daughters, Rainbow for Girls and DeMolay) were represented at the opening of Supreme Session. Listening to these young men and women speak brought goose bumps to all of us. Their enthusiasm and speaking on their individual projects and accomplishments was so refreshing to hear. Yes, these men and women are our future Masons/Shriners and Daughters of the Nile. We need to support them locally and encourage them and welcome them into our organizations. Here is just one way to bring in new members. 

2014’s First Lady Wendy Kearney’s Project by Past Potentate Rocky Kearney, divehog@comcast.net

I

want to thank those who helped Lady Wendy in finally getting the time to finish her 2014 First Lady’s project. Due to schedule problems, Lady Wendy had to wait until this year’s temple closing to have the Ladies Room remodeled. Lady Wendy and I burnt the candles many nights to beat the deadline and have it ready for reopening and Bingo. The 10-day project was completed in 5 days, working

three 18-hour days. It was a good thing the soft wall was opened up as I found a slowly leaking pipe. Plumbing fixed in the floor, the wall, toilets replaced, new vanity, mirrors, lights, paint, tile and colorful dividers. The Main Hall and bar got a fresh coat of paint from last year’s project money also. Enjoy your Shrine! Pictured below is Lady Wendy sanding at my shop at 4:00 a.m. and before and after photos. 

Pull Tabs for Shriners Hospitals

The Ladies of Sar-I Court started in 1992 collecting and donating aluminum pull-tabs to the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund.” As of March 31, 2015, they have collected 104,007 lbs., for a total of $54,753.66 for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on PULL TABS 1. Why not collect the whole can? Collecting complete cans would require a great deal more storage space. You should go ahead and recycle the rest of the can in the normal way, in the dumpster behind Sahib. 2. How many tabs in a pound? 1,267. 3. How many tabs will a gallon milk jug hold? About 5 pounds worth. 4. How does it work and where does the money go? The tabs are delivered to the Sahib office (or almost any Sahib club/unit location) and then taken to the recycling center. The money netted from recycling goes directly into the “Wheel Chair Repair Fund” at the Tampa Shriners Hospital for Children. Call:
